Matt Drake #5

Brothers In Arms

Rate this book
A new agency, a new era, and Matt Drake goes head to head with the government of North Korea. Whilst en route to investigate an assassination threat, Drake and Mai Kitano are blown out of the skies and cast adrift in a storm-tossed ocean, only to be marooned on a deserted island.

Back home, the clock is ticking, but the deadly jigsaw puzzle of events refuses to fit together. Assassins stalk the streets of Washington DC. Civilians are being murdered by ordinary-seeming Americans turned expert killers, and for no apparent reason.

Hayden and her team search for the fateful link between five total strangers. Mai, almost single-handedly, tries to capture the enemy island, and Drake storms his way over land from North Korea and across China and Europe, destroying a human trafficking ring on the way.

And as the pieces finally come together the new team are thrust into a literal race against time, a deadly interstate contest of vehicular warfare. Only the hardest, fastest and most capable men and women will make it out alive.

The books seem to have ever more moving pieces as the characters no longer need to be grouped into a single large team to manage their objective. This shows the strength of the characters, as well as the plot development as both become more well defined and engaging. The series is a winner. I'm on to the next in the catalog.

Brothers In Arms (Matt Drake Book 5) - a review by Rosemary Kenny

A rather shorter novel, with a slower-starting, more considered tone,in David Leadbeater's Matt Drake series, Book 5 is Brothers In Arms.

The SPEAR team have an urgent call to arms, while on an unusual break from duty, where they've been thinking back on those they've lost in combat and the best way forward. Drake and his fighters must trace the source of the latest threat and then neutralise the people-trafficking operation at its heart, unaware of a deadlier threat behind the facade of a small-time operation, where brainwashed victims become 'sleeper assassins' for a shadowy assortment of villains.
While Drake heads back to HQ, Mai must go solo, back to the Clan, the deadly master ninja fighters who bought her from her impoverished parents as a child and now hold her parents hostage to make Mai return to save them - by acting as a lone assassin of their rivals.

Who are the Shadow Elite - and what do they plan in order to seize power? Who is Romero?
Does he work with, or against Drake and with what result? How does Mai save her loved ones?

A maelstrom of plots, counter espionage, battles against the enemy within, (as well as from abroad) and against time as it swiftly runs out, Brothers In Arms is David Leadbeater's non-stop, gritty thriller that you won't want to put down.
A warning - the Matt Drake series is ultra-addictive, so be aware that once you start reading them, you won't ever want to stop!!

Due to their success in the Oden problem, Matt and his group are formed into a new secret special forces team: S.P.E.A.R. Their first mission starts with zombie-like killers shooting targeted victims that seem random and all somehow connected to a mysterious island by North Koreans.

I always laugh when the bad guys declare that they’re going to easily wipe out the good guys. Bullies are always tough until they end up on the losing side wounded.

Fave scenes: finding Mai on the beach, Loren’s escape from the apartment room, the highway sign and Mai’s race against time.

Once again, a great romp. Once again, marred by grammatical errors. Btw grinded is not a word! Second book in the series that has used it. Really love the characters, the story, the writing, but please correct the mistakes. They are the only thing stopping a much higher rating and are incredibly irritating. Otherwise I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Another great thriller with non stop action from start to finish. Even with the action split between 3 different teams it’s easy to follow and is a truly exciting read. Can’t wait to see where this leads.

I've been waiting for this, the fifth Matt Drake book ,to see where David is going o take the team ths time - the answer near enough half way round the world and back again leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. this is a great bridging novel for the next series of books which I truly can't wait for. The action in this tart in the first few ages and never stops culminating in a brilliantly written car chase, as always there are the usual twists and turns and cliffhangers. Well done David another winner!

Having thoroughly enjoyed the action filled previous 4 Matt Drake books I dropped everything as soon as this came out. Slightly slower paced to start with, but understandably so as this is the start of a new adventure, the book builds momentum and the action gets more frantic. By the end you don't want it to stop, I can't wait for Drake and his team to continue this adventure as like this it will no doubt be an action packed page turner.

Another book in the series

This book is an easy read. It has its predictable share geeking the reader, however it doesn't distract from the storyline. The dropping of characters seems predictable by the way the individual character is set up in the writing to leave, either by being killed off or taking off for parts unknown. Overall, it is a book you can put down when you want and not lose track of the storyline.

Fun read

This is a series much like what we see on tv. It's a good light read. If you're looking for the meaning of like, flowery language, words that make you feel fine and want to coexist and think Kafkaesque thoughts, this isn't the book for you. It's a story. Nothing more or less. It's not designed to reveal the secrets of the universe. Busy it's a good read

very disappointing.

very disappointing. the first book was brilliant, but the language just got uglier and smuttier lowlife as the books progressed until I stopped completely halfway thru book 5 with a bad taste in my mouth towards this author. so unnecessary, he could have been an excellent writer.

Cool!!!

This book was as fast paced as all the other installments. Keep up the good work. I don't think I could recommend any changes except Mai and Matt
Should have more love scenes.

5th with much more to come

No mythical treasures of the past here. They come later in the series. This is pure blood, guts, stealth and the thrill of a disparate team of incorrigible agents. Really nice character development and non-stop action.

Good Matt Drake story. It helps to have read the previous books in the series, but this could be a stand-alone story.
