Hilda Charlton (1906 – January 29, 1988) was a spiritual teacher, author, dancer, and healer who taught classes in meditation and prayer in New York City for twenty-three years in which she gave practical lessons to thousands for living a life of truth, courage and love.
Born in London in 1906, Hilda moved to the United States with her parents when she was four years old. She was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Los Angeles, California. At the age of eighteen, she began performing as a modern dancer. For the next 20 years, she danced and taught in the San Francisco area. She toured India as a dancer from 1947 to 1950, and stayed in India for fifteen more years, pursuing. her study of eastern mysticism and meditation. She studied under the guidance of Sri Nityananda of Ganeshpuri, Sri Mahadevananda of Bombay, and Sri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi—world renowned spiritual masters and holy men.
This is one of my all-time favorite books - maybe my favorite. Was gifted to me in India in 2002-03 and has traveled with me ever since. Even though it's well-read, there is something new to glean or deeper layers each time I re-read a section. There's a section in Chapter 5 - Holy Lady Ammal - that describes the personal spiritual journey better than anything I've read to date. I love Hilda's humor, compassion, faith, and willingness. No need to read chapters sequentially - you can read each chapter in whatever order you are drawn to.
Here's how the backcover reads: "From time to time, an extraordinary being of love and truth comes to the Earth to guide and inspire beings along the path of God-realization. Hilda Charlton was such an extraordinary being...This book is a compilation of remarkable classes she gave at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in NYC--classes in which she spoke with love, wisdom and humor of the saints and holy people who were a living part of her life."
