Matt Drake #6

The Swords of Babylon

Rate this book
A last stand is coming - a battle of battles.

Matt Drake and the SPEAR team return in a brand new action-packed adventure!

When Drake is captured and sent to a remote Russian prison, little does he know that the last remaining member of the Shadow Elite has already set in motion a reckless, uncompromising plan to control or destroy all life on Earth.

The battle for the survival of the human race begins in ancient Babylon, where Alexander the Great discovered and warned of a second way to activate Odin's doomsday device. His solution was to forge seven swords of Babylon and connect them to the Tower of Babel. Drake's team enter a deadly race to find and discover how to use these swords to combat the catastrophically powerful weapon of the gods before it's too late. If they fail and the doomsday device is activated, the world will burn.

Through high camaraderie, betrayal, and endless twists and turns, the team launch a rescue attempt for Drake, then face skirmishes in Russia's Red Square, and fights among the ruins of Babylon until they come to a final desperate battle where all three tombs and the darkest black hole in existence - the ancient Pit of Babylon - have to be assaulted simultaneously.

The fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Fast paced read.

Fast paced read. Enjoy the history and archaeological references. I've read the series in order and I would recommend reading this way as it is an ongoing story and character development.

The Swords of Babylon (Matt Drake Book 6) - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Many centuries ago Alexander the Great ordered the creation of a set of 6 matching swords and 1 master sword, all etched with syllabary, that together detail how and where to find - and stop - the Armageddon-type mechanism that would destroy the entire world. Now a maniacal organisation plans to activate the said machine, supposedly hidden in three different tombs of the gods, that Matt Drake and the SPEAR team uncovered in an earlier book, in the outstanding thriller Matt Drake series by the brilliantly creative David Leadbeater.

As #6, The Swords of Babylon progresses, the action moves from the US to Russia and even Iran, as traitors from their own country, acting with a covertly-acting North Korean official, dog their every move and try to violently thwart their vital mission.

Who are Zanko and Zoya? What happens at the pit of the Tower of Babylon?
What do its 7 levels represent? Who has the Master Sword - and how do SPEAR recapture it?

If you want fast, exciting, action packed stories with a great cast of characters and lots of banter, this series is for you!
At the time of writing this review there have been 28 Matt Drake books and 16 related spin-offs! More than enough to keep you entertained for some time!
The team members may come and go but the missions are no less outrageous. These books are 'unputdownable' if that's even a word. They are not long reads but fast paced, action packed and easily digestible. Although the books have a reading order, you could drop into the series at any point and not have an issue. Enjoy!

Drake is kidnapped by the head of the Russian mafia in revenge for killing his men and shutting down an operation. When he is thrown into a mafia run prison in Russia, the team sets out to rescue him before he is interrogated for info about the Odin’s Device, then killed. During his time in prison, Drake discovers that the head of the Shadow Elite, Zak Block has found another way to turn on the Device requiring the nine swords of Alexander the Great. Now the chase is on to find them.

This is basically the coming together of events in the previous books with no new archeological discoveries. Except for engraving translations, the swords are already ‘discovered’.

Footnote: 1) I looked up ‘Taz’ as a video game character and only came up with the Loony tunes guy. No sprite.

Fave scenes: Drake rescuing Yorgi, Dahl chasing the merc, Austria’s Autobahn & Tesla and Dahl exiting the cable car.

SIMPLE MAN'S REVIEW

We read these books for the same reason we watch movies like Die Hard: fast-paced action and unbelievable story lines. This book does both, continuing the story about the gods' tombs and Shadow Elite. But this book was a bit underwhelming. There was plenty of action but the story connecting it all felt weak. There is also plenty of sulking by two of the SPEAR team members as they revisit old demons. I'm assuming this is intended to set up some of the plot points the next book, but it was a bit annoying. All together though, it is a quick, fun read and concludes the saga of the gods' tombs.

Well David certainly delivers again. This book sees Matt Drake and his team stretched to their limits once again trying to save the world from the Doomsday device of the Gods as well as throwing in new twists and turns for other characters. The action is non stop and is delivered at breakneck speed. I really can't wait to see how this all plays out .... Roll on January for part 7.

Keeps getting better!

As a fan of the genre, I happily accept the impossibility of the situations Drake and company find themselves in. Since the first book, Leadbetter has steadily developed wonderfully complex characters and relationships. The interesting twists on historical and mythical figures keeps getting ever wilder. Love it!

Awesome read

Book 6 is fast paced. There is not much down time between the action and the last 100 pages are intense
