Superior: Adventure Romance

Rate this book
In the not-too-distant future, after the Water Wars led to Civil War II, Superior Protectorate established itself in what is now Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Two young women, Miss Kristian and Miss Rhona, will soon be of marrying age, but that means being tied to a husband instead of each other--a forbidden prospect.

Powerless to change the rules of a nation that supposedly protects them, the young lovers are thrust into a perilous journey in their quest for freedom and a life together.

Miss Kristian Browne and her lifelong friend Miss Rhona leave the Browne household to begin a two year stint at a farm camp. Here the two women, who possess unusual skills in their day and age, attain a job to fill the two years before both are of marrying age. Miss Kristian joins the boys in the mechanic's section and gains respect and adoration from a fellow worker. While Miss Rhona struggles to gain respect in the science lab and faces harsh bullying.

But behind closed doors the two friends have fallen passionately in love. After hearing horror stories of same-sex couples being exposed and sent away only never to be heard of again the two women proceed into their taboo relationship carefully. Miss Kristian thinks practically and ponders marrying a good man who will take Miss Rhona into the home as a servant, but Miss Rhona is a romantic and desires to steal away into the night and attempt to escape to Canada. However, there are a few twists and unexpected events that lead to the ultimate decision- will they be forced apart or escape together?

The world-building in this book is extremely developed and phenomenal. The Superior Protectorate (formerly Upper Michigan) is its own country after Civil War II where refugees from the lower United States ruined the wildlife and practically demolished all natural resources. Canada has closed its border and allows the Superior Protectorate to rule itself in peace. The rest of the United States is in chaos but the Superior Protectorate is surviving with a Totalitarian government. Conservative and traditionalist values have been enforced and the society resembles that of the '50s where the men work outside the home and the women attend to the children and housework. Same-sex unions are strictly forbidden and come with harsh societal consequences. As one character states "we gave up our freedoms to have comfort." Also, a "green" type of movement has replaced the damaged natural resources and it was very interesting to read about alternative fuel and a society that survives off conserving resources.

The romance between the two main characters is incredibly tender and endearing. They have been best friends from childhood and their love has blossomed with their entrance into young adult-hood. However, I didn't emotionally capture the characters' essence as much as I like to. I felt like the characters where a little too one-dimensional and I would have liked to discover more depth and background for each of them.

The premise of this novel and the futuristic evaluation of a society was extremely unique and interesting. I would consider this a classic romance and if there was a lesbian Lifetime a made-for-TV movie would derive from this novella. I highly recommend this novella to those interested in a timeless romance between two women who overcome the restraints of society to be together forever.

How much are you willing to give up for safety? This is the story of two women who love each other but it is not allowed in their society. The Protectorate decides all relationships. It is a moving story aka 1984 and A Brave New World. Well written and you are easily drawn into the story. I am straight but still was able to sympathize with these two women!

I won a paperback copy of this book and I am very glad I did!

The book was not to long. Filled with struggles of a society against homosexuality and unequal treatment towards women. A beautiful love story as well
