FROM THE BACK We've all seen and heard stories about the Vietnam War. Mostly, it's always been from an American perspective, but what about from those who lived in Vietnam during that terrible time in history? Author Dieu Bao was just a child living in the rural village of Son Tung when war came to her country. She tried desperately to live a normal life in the serene countryside, but too many times bombs rained down from the sky. Too many times the people she loved, including her own family, were killed because of the battles being fought all across Vietnam. Along with this, Dieu endured many other kinds of battles that weren't fought with guns or planes, but with lying abusive husbands. There seemed to be nowhere in Vietnam that she could escape from violence. Yet through her passion for life and her devotion to Buddha, Dieu managed to find a way out from the madness in Vietnam. Sakura Publishing is proud to publish this incredible true story about a young Vietnamese girl who becomes a woman, searches for love and seemingly impossible peace, and eventually finds it in the most unexpected of places.
I thought this was an interesting story about life during the Vietnam war. It captured what Bao went through during those turbulent times living with the threat of bombs, fighting, soldiers among you. Such tragedy she experienced from such a young age of life and having to witness the effects of a war torn country and how it affected her and her families lives. But in spite of all she went through she never gave up. This is an uplifting story of survival and overcoming whatever challenges you may have in life and keeping your faith in yourself. The ending left me feeling that she was going to get to experience a new better life and she was ready to embrace the unknowns that lie ahead. Bao is a strong person and a great example for us all. I think this is a story that is worth taking the time to read and I stayed invested in it all the way to the end.
