Grace Mountain

Grace Mountain was inspired by a true story of an amazing young woman who rises above deceit and betrayal. Having grown up on a back-road country farm with her family, Grace, now twenty, decides to start a life on her own. She moves to a nearby town after being hired for a job and soon meets a captivating young man. Although Allen is four years her junior, they fall in love and their relationship blossoms. Grace deems this man to be her only true love and desires to make a life with him. The year is 1923. Although her father voices his disapproval of him after their very first meeting, Allen and Grace continue dating and are soon married. The first few years of their life together are ideal until the depression renders Allen unemployed and discontented. What follows are years of hardship, deception, and trials that test Grace's courage, resilience, and faith. Secrets are later revealed after Grace's children are grown and they delve into the past with a shocking discovery.

This book tells the story of an amazing woman who persevered to raise her children alone after her husband left. Written by her grandson, the story is a fictional version of family events. It was interesting to imagine how these were stories passed down orally and then novelized to make a page-turning novel. After reading about Grace and the "mountains" she had to climb in life, I am inspired by her strength and character. When the family reconnects with the absent father years later it was nice to know that despite hurt feelings, their blood-ties eased the ability to forgive and move on.

I really enjoyed this book. Bobby did a fantastic job of describing the way of life in simpler times. Also in giving a voice to Grace that felt so honest that you felt it was her speaking. Although I am not a native of Thomasville, I have lived here for years and found myself trying to figure out where some of the places were and also enjoying the recognition of the places I know.
