Nick Geller is America’s premier intelligence agent. He is at the White House to receive an intelligence service medal for killing the head of al Qaeda. Instead of receiving the medal, he shoots the president and while making his escape, blows up the West Wing. And that’s just the first few pages of Murray McDonald’s latest thriller.

It gets worse. Geller visited Fort Detrick, the U.S. bio warfare lab, and several vials of Ebola Zaire virus have gone missing. Geller has gone rogue in a big way. He is spirited out of the country by one of al Qaeda’s finance sources and is the mastermind behind a plot to destroy America using the Ebola virus via al Qaeda jihadists. Geller then uses internet live streaming to ratchet up the concerns of the U.S. as to just what he has in mind.

McDonald seamlessly switches between the pursuers and the pursued with Geller staying one step ahead of the agents chasing him. To make the chase just a little more interesting, McDonald has included Geller’s former lover Frankie, a disgraced secret service agent, as one of the lead agents in the chase. Also McDonald includes a lot of the inter agency politics and jealousy which are all so real in our alphabet agencies.

While I really don’t like to compare authors, as each reader has a different take on quality and readability, I found this novel to be every bit as entertaining as the works of Alex Berenson or the late Vince Flynn.

I was able to read a pre-release issue of this. As such, there were several minor errors in the novel that should be remedied via the final edit. My five star rating takes into account the errors will be corrected.

"A chilling blockbuster of a novel"

This is a thriller that just had to be written. All of the elements are known to us; a Middle Eastern theatre boiling over with hatred for the West in general, and the US in particular. Al Qaeda primed ready to attack using whatever weaponry is available. The US embroiled in political in-fighting in DC and their allies across the seas battling an economic downturn. Africa had its own problem with the Ebola virus which was well covered in the media. No-one who reads this book will wonder what these elements mean; we've lived with them for several years. Murray McDonald has imagined a scenario that is horrifying, yet totally plausible. To reveal much more will spoil future readers enjoyment. Safe to say, they will be absorbed and gathered up in the urgent pace of the action as it unfolds around the globe. A cleverly crafted story-line which keeps you guessing until the final pages.

Good story; bad ending

It is a very intriguing story about an American secret service agent, Nick, that turns traitor by joining so Qaeda, attempting to assassinate the president, blowing up the West Wing, and plotting to spread Ebola across the United States. Nick manages to our maneuver the entire U.S. intelligence, law enforcement, and anti-terrorism community for most of the book. There is also a subplot involving Nick's half Arab girlfriend. The story is fairly decent until it becomes apparent what is really going on. I do not want to give the ending away, but beginning with the "18 months ago" chapter, I found the book to be disappointing and too predictable.

It starts with a bang, and you wonder it can’t be, as she does, her lover is a traitor. The other happening, the jihadists, she has a different job, a baby now. Then a call from the President, the words he told her was a healing balm for her. A fast paced action, that goes to the end. Well done.
Loved the character of Frankie. Her emotions and the fear was well portrayed.

It's yet another terrorist story which you have might have watched in many movies. Contains usual elements of terrorism such as biological war (Ebola Virus) and Islamic groups.

Resonates very close to corona virus biological war (COVID-19) of 2020.

Nothing new or refreshing in the book. I would skip it

Terribly unbelievable plot.

Usually I have to make myself put a book down. This was the opposite. The plot was immediately evident and just too fairy tale like. I hate to not finish a book but this was hard to keep picking up.

The author did a wonderful job of keeping the reader guessing if the traitor was a spy or traitor and to whom. high energy, lots of questions about right and wrong

A truly great read. I found this book almost unputdownable. So well written that an almost unbelivable plot-line becomes totally believable. Highly recommended. I will be following this author.

Traitor hooked me!!

What I liked: If I told you before I was 10% into this book, I knew what was going on and yet I still kept reading, you might wonder why. Well, the truth is, I KNEW some of the plot very early and I was intrigued enough to see how Mr McDonald was going to make a whole book as of the story line. He more than surprised me; he kept me reading until I was finished.

The characters were pretty well defined and didn't need to grow so much as to react to what was going on around them and how they would handle each clue or try to catch the traitor. Mr McDonald was also talented and smart enough to show how even after all this time since 911, the intelligence departments still are not working together or sharing all the info they have with each other. (That's a bit scary but with politics and governments, totally believable).

Frankie (Aisha Franks) thought she knew her lover, Nick Geller. Boy, was she ever surprised when he tries to kill the President of the United States especially with her on duty as part of the President's Secret Service detail. And there it starts and expands to America under attack on two different fronts.

Part of Traitor is told from the traitor's point of view which worked the plot very well. Nick has been trained by the best and he's sharing that training with the radical Muslim community to bring America to its knees. The mystery is, can Frankie put together enough clues about the man she thought she knew to help capture and/or kill him before his plan is put into motion.

While Frankie and Nick are two of the main characters, I especially enjoyed how the President was portrayed and the mystery surrounding Harry Carson. He seems to have a lot of intelligence and assets at his finger tips and yet, has no "official" government title.

What I didn't like: Some parts of Traitor seemed to me to just be "fluff" to fill the pages but it was interesting fluff. A few of Mr McDonald's metaphors or word usage felt too glib. It was a bit over the top in a few places but put it all together and it worked to keep me reading.

An enjoyable read with a plot I wish the real world could use.

Definitely a Page Turner.

This was one of those books which leave you with a feeling of relief. Why relief - read to book to find out. Anything else would be a give away.

An extremely fast paced thriller which showcases the good and the bad about various American intelligence agencies/departments; the politics involved in a situation of a possible terrorist attack; and above all - human perseverance.

Nick Geller is a highly trained (probably the best ever) agent produced by the American system and he has turned out to be a traitor of the biggest proportions when he tries to assassinate the POTUS. Now he is the centre of the biggest Manhunt in the world where he always manages to stay 2 steps ahead of his chasers. He has mobilized the Jihadist all over the world and is preparing for the biggest possible attack on the USA.

The rest of the book follows the manhunt - following the breadcrumbs and combing the haystack for the needle.
In all of this you actually feel sorry for Frankie. And what bloody schemer Harry Carson is.

This is one of those books which you want to finish at the earliest as the mystery and suspense keeps you on the edge.

Thanks for the entertaining book. This would be a very good candidate to be turned into a movie ;)

WARNING: This review contains spoilers.

This book had its entertaining segments, especially in the beginning, but its credibility waned precipitously as I approached the denouement. I did predict fairly early in the narrative that Nick would turn out to be a hero vs. the "traitor." There were several unmistakable clues, most notably Frankie's pregnancy, that it wasn't difficult to anticipate the outcome even if it wasn't perfectly clear exactly how it would be orchestrated logistically. In unraveling that puzzle, I thought the story became convoluted, confusing, and unbelievable. My bottom line is that I had to suspend so much disbelief that it diminished the novel's enjoyment and impact. Overall, it was an OK read which, for me, merits a 3 star rating.

One of the best books I have read in years. I rarely give a book 5 stars so that alone should tell you something. There is plenty of violence, so this book may not be appropriate for more sensitive readers. There were enough twists, turns, and surprises to keep me riveted and reading. This was a book that I could not put down. With all of the terrorist attacks the last few years, I wish we could come up with a solution like the author did in this story.

Not my genre

This seemed to be written very well but I couldn't finish it. It's not my type of book but I thought since it was free that I'd try it. I got bored a couple chapters in but for people who like this type it seems likely that it would be good

Holy Cow! This was one of those books that you might as well get your coffee ready because you'll be on a roller coaster ride as soon as you start and you'll want to keep riding all night long. I figured it out but it didn't matter, I was hooked.

From the very first page, this book grabs hold and refuses to let go. A fantastic combination of political and medical mystery, one that you invest yourself in and you hate to see it end.

Traitor is a good spy ride based in the post-9/11 terrorist genre. Similar to a movie by the same name featuring Don Cheadle. Fast-paced with lots of action and some fun characters.
