Los Republicanos: Why Hispanics and Republicans Need Each Other

Rate this book
Hispanics comprise one of America's largest business-minded, faith-based, culturally-conservative entities―and their numbers continue to grow. Long assumed to be aligned with the Democrats, Hispanics have been ignored by many Republicans. Noted Hispanic marketing expert and political commentator Leslie Sanchez passionately argues that Hispanics, after years of watching Democrats fail them, need to shift their bets to Los Republicanos or risk gambling away their political future. In her book, Sanchez debunks the cultural and political myths about Hispanics and Republicans alike. She also offers a look at today's changing Hispanic mindset and the new dynamic force that is rising.

Overall, the book was OK, but it's worth reading for the chapter 'credit card debt' alone. This chapter blew me away. This book was written in 2007 and everything it said Republicans shouldn't do is what Trump did along with the Right-wing media. She emphasized it was not a winning strategy. I searched to see what she said today. I found one clip in which she said it was the economy that mattered more. Immigration wasn't as important. She also insinuated it wasn't just Trump but the GOP in general. She they disregarded the rhetoric. Now in 2025, all the gains made by Trump among the Hispanic population, was wiped out in the NJ governor election. They definitely seem to be the swing vote.
But it almost seems her point about Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric was a losing message was completely wrong when Trump improved among Hispanics in 2016 by 2-3 points. People seem to always forget the messenger plays a bigger role. Trump's message was mainly about crime in which immigrants wanted it to be solved as well and didn't think they would get caught up in the mass deportation. Also, the WALL message didn't really turn them off.

I was able to relate to much of what Leslie Sanchez said. Although I thought some of her arguments were a bit flimsy, overall I came away with a better appreciation of the Republican Party. Every Latino should read this book.
