Everyone knew he was deadly, even in Hassell Point, a city full of outlaws and thieves. It was obvious at a glance, from his low slung knives, to the blood dripping from his knuckles. But the stranger wasn't looking for trouble, he wanted a fresh start and Lorik was determined to give him one. Lorik is a teamster, delivering cargo throughout the kingdom of Ortis from his home deep in the marshlands where he has lived his whole life. As rumors of magic and dragons in the northern kingdom of Yelsia cause the King to march to war with his army, lawless men seize the opportunity to take what they can by force. It could be the perfect time for Lorik to partner with the newcomer named Stone, but the young warrior brings problems of his own that could place Lorik and the people he cares about in even more danger. Set in the world first introduced in the best selling Five Kingdoms series, the Lorik trilogy introduces new characters who will impact the destiny of this fabled land. Lorik is the story of a man whose world is suddenly turned upside down. His concern for a friend earns him an enemy, his actions make him a hero, but his honor could cost him his life.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I found it had to put down. It was refreshing to have characters that were normal people. No magical weapon or spells. It made them relatable. It was easy to myself in a setting like this. Starting the next book soon.
This is the first book in a trilogy that takes place in the same world as his Five Kingdoms series and the first book by this author that I have read. I do not have a lot of good things to say about this book but stick with me because I feel optimistic that the second book will be better.
This is an e-book only item published through Amazon. I'm not sure if Mr. Neighbors had an editor or not but he certainly needed one. Besides countless misspelled words, there were many instances where words were just missing. I find it hard to believe that even Microsoft Word's spelling/grammar check would have missed a lot of the silly mistakes I found.
The plot felt kind of hollow especially when compared to other events transpiring in the background just barely being touched upon. I have a feeling, however that these events are the main focus of the author's Five Kingdoms series (a series that was recommended to me by my brother but I decided to start with Lorik first).
The main character Lorik seemed to jump between being a deep and engaging character to someone whose plight I no longer cared about. In fact, I found Stone to be a more interesting and engaging character than Lorik.
On a plus side, Toby Neighbors is a really good writer. His prose is stylish yet simple and he manages to show you the actions scenes rather than write them. He might be a little more fast-paced than some people prefer but something tells me that his Five Kingdoms series is more moderately and reasonably paced.
Although it cannot always be helped, I am a firm believer that a writer can only do so much when it comes to self-editing before they need fresh eyes to make it truly publishable. I look forward to reading the next two books in this trilogy and I will probably read his Five Kingdoms series when the physical copies are published.

Lorik is the story of a man whose world is suddenly turned upside down. His concern for a friend earns him an enemy, his actions make him a hero, but his honor could cost him his life. I enjoyed The Five Kingdoms series, so I thought I'd give this a try. Lorik is an ordinary guy. he gets up in the morning, goes to work, and does his job. He doesn't have super powers, he can't tell the future, but he does have a strong sense of right and wrong and does what is required when necessary. Reading this book was easy and it is fast paced. Great reading!
I thought there were seven volumes in the Five Kingdoms story, only to learn it continued with an eight (and more?) I bought the eighth Five Kingdoms book and found its introduction mentioned it would include characters from the Lorik trilogy. So, I postponed reading the eighth in the Five Kingdoms series to read about Lorik.
But I found that Lorik starts off with undesirable language, as I had noted in my review of the Five Kingdom books, being inserted into later volumes (after the first). Because Lorik starts that way, I was not enticed to keep reading. Lorik also starts with a relationship of prostitution. And a dead church.
I admired the morals and character of Zollin through the first seven books of the Five Kindoms series. But I had noticed he was an exception, with no other person, even Brianna, having those values. Lorik certainly does not.
I am 75 and long ago I chose a narrow path I believed would be the best life I could live. A good decision. I have learned we are different each day from yesterday. We are changed by decisions we make, who we're with, what we watch, and by what we read. We each may choose. I decided Neighbor's books that I was reading are leading to a different path than that I've chosen.
I read about 50 pages of Lorik and I quit. I will not continue with the eight Five Kingdom book, either. I hope I find another author as gifted as Neighbors.
Lorik is a teamster who lives in Hassell Point. His best friend, Vera, works in an ale house as a server. In comes a stranger named Stone who finds trouble in his wake at all times.
Lorik takes Stone as a partner in his business and the friendship begins. Both men worry about Vera, who decides to leave her job to start anew somewhere else.
Though I thoroughly enjoyed The Five Kingdoms saga I find I am enjoying this one even more. Both stories have great characters with a great deal of verbal banter that makes them seem real. There are some typos/mistakes in this story as there was in The Five Kingdoms but not nearly as many. (Probably the one that bothers me the most is the wrong character named in a scene.)
I have already started the next book in this series. Hopefully it will be as good.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good western as that is what I felt I was reading. Although the story is set in a fantasy world there wasn't any magical components in the book.

I really would love a scan of this man's brain! How can he put so much depth into his stories. It's like he lived there. Loric is almost an "Everyman", given the space his environment includes. I mean he's not a worldly man, he's never been far from his home, yet his thoughts and actions speak volumes. I highly recommend this story. I just want to know where the writer his ideas.
