This trilogy is one that Ms Clover has been rolling around in her mind for sometime (according to the epilogue.)
As it result, it is extremely complicated, it depends heavily upon a near immediate memory of the first two volumes, and the average reader (such as the very average one typing this review) may find it helpful to keep a crib sheet to get through this final volume.
It’s worth it, or was for me, but in time, I may wish to pull apart some of the narrative threads the author seemingly left dangling. I have this feeling that some things just aren’t fully explained in the final drawing room scene.
But for tonight, I’ll assign the volume four stars (minus one for those troublesome dangling threads) and I will highly recommend this for your consideration.
I found this book gripped hold of me quite quickly & I just had to keep on reading it. Once again someone has been murdered & Bess & Vicky have been asked to try and solve the crime. They are also intent on finding out just what did happen to Philip, the previous Earl who had died in a hunting “accident”. Philip’s widow & her sister, Bubbles, live at Buxton Hall, even though Ridley Hall is where a bubbles should live. Sir Dorian Ridley begs Bess & Vicky to find who killed his visitor from Africa. First time he’d been back to England in 20 years & mentioned he’d been at the hunt the day that Philip died. A very interesting book indeed.
This series reminds me, in a small way, of the Downtown Abbey saga, only with twin daughters and a lot more murders. The plot is meandering and one of the twins a bit more flighty than she truly needed to be. The characters all have their needed places in the story and are quite vivid. Finally the premise started out with the twins trying to prove their father, Nigel was in no way complicit in the death of his brother. The answers were hard won and more people had to die to stop the original murderer, who came out of left field for me. I most definitely recommend this book and the rest of the series.
In this last installment of the trilogy, everything finally comes together when Lady Bess and Lady Vicky figure out that the murders that have been taking place have a long history. The supporting cast of characters is wonderful, the backdrop is great, the mysteries are all wrapped up quite nicely. Lovely period piece with fabulous descriptions - reader feels immersed into the story.
I read the three books of course, treating like one book. I loved them all. The only thing that wasn’t explained is why the twins were separated. But the rest exceptional. The ending was unexpected and beautifully explained. Loved it. I wish for more books about the twins.
The characters were well written, the locations were described beautifully or eerily as appropriate Satisfying ending leaving intriguing dangling threads…
