The author asserts that for us and our predecessors a landscape has always been a constructed version of nature; she notes that the ancient Greeks had neither a word or a concept to express what we understand a "landscape" to be. She explores her claim that the notion of "landscape" has been invented, and discusses how it functions to situate the viewer's perception of time and space in nature.

Belo presente da minha querida amiga Amanda. Lindo, lírico e sólido teoricamente. A história do sonho da mãe é linda (aliás, segunda vez que uma mãe é lembrada num livro sobre paisagem, sinto um tema); a contextualização histórica agradável e esclarecedora (passa pela experiência cultural do azul, a controvérsia iconoclasta, até a invenção da paisagem pela perspectiva); a gramática da paisagem funcional e bem fundamentada (só queria mais). Como um jardim feito por um paisagista talentoso.
