Remember Me

Rate this book
My eyes, I can’t open them. I freak out and force them open and then they burn like hell. My arms hurt too. Lifting them is like lifting dead weight. My fingers feel like fat sausages glued to my knuckles, stiff when I try to bend them.

I stare up at the grey sky. I can hear waves crashing nearby, seagulls squawking over something, the patter of raindrops on sharp grey rocks I can see edges of. There is hammering in the distance, the distinct sound of a skill saw squealing as it cuts through stubborn wood, men shouting.

I try to sit up but it hurts too much. Everything hurts. Then I regret moving at all, my leg screams with white lights. I close my eyes again, squeezing them tight against the pain. A ripple of fear washes over me, did I break it?

I begin a painful check my other limbs. There is bruising on every one of them. I still have pants on but my shirt is high on my chest. I carefully pull it back down. I notice the nails on my hands are ragged, a few torn off, scabs in their place. Black and blue splotches cover my fingers. I want to cry. What happened to me?

When 12 year old Nathalie Gregory wakes up on Blake Island, a non-populated island, she has no idea how she arrived there or the events that led up to it.

As she recovers in the hospital, an attempt is made on her life. There is something everyone around her is keeping from her.

Will she be strong enough to face the truth as her memories slowly return? Will she remember what happened to her in time to prevent a third attempt on her life?

The story opens with the discovery of Nathalie being found close to death and her sister Lucy missing. Nathalie has no memory of what happened to herself or her missing sister. For all intent purposes it appears a serial killer is at large and the reason behind Nathalie, Lucy and other girls missing. I would of liked more background on the other alleged missing girls. That would of really gave more to the storyline.

I found myself confused a few times as the story jumped a bit with clarity on the story itself. Nathalie seemed to 'recover from nearly being killed very quickly with extensive injuries to leg and ribs. Nathalie's mother one time saying she was friends with the detective in the story then asking Lucy for his last name because she didn't remember did not make sense.

The killer for me was obvious from the beginning. I read a lot of mysteries and suspense so that tends to happen so it might not be that way for another reader.

Over all the story is really good but Nathalie has a leg injury that would of taken longer to walk on than a few days in the hospital and the first day home. Since I have pins and a disc in my own leg I know that standing let alone walking takes weeks even on crutches. She also would need physical therapy for a few weeks and would not be up around on crutches by herself so soon. This took away from the story for me a bit but overall it's still a good story.

I think the legal aspects of the story that took place during Nathalie being questioned by the police needs to be researched; having worked in law enforcement the process of arrest and questioning is incorrectly laid out.

I'd like to thank the author for offering her book free on Amazon. I'm looking forward to see what the author has next.

A real page-turner. Very well crafted, with great pacing and plenty of suspense. The portrayal of the emotional trauma experienced by Nathalie and her family is well done and realistic. The mystery in the story has much more to do with the events that Nathalie cannot recall than the pursuit of her attacker, who is an unknown until the end of the book. This is not a police procedural mystery.

I felt the book missed five stars for a couple of reasons. Some of Nathalie's thoughts and actions stretched credibility a bit, considering her extreme physical injuries, emotional shock, and age. I also don't think her attacker could have stood up, much less walked, after being injured the way he was near the end. Lastly, the book could benefit from another editing pass. There were not a lot of errors, just enough to be noticed. These minor issues did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. I would recommend this book for anyone that enjoys a good suspense tale.

Good book

I enjoyed the book and the story was really good I just thought that it could have been written a little better. one example is when the mother picks the daughter up from the police station and says "I can't believe you betrayed our homeschool friendship like this Devon" but the next page she couldn't remember the detectives name. it also seemed like it was no big deal that their daughter was killed, and the killer was after the other daughter.

Good book

this was a free book and it was good! The plot was well developed and didn't jump around. I enjoyed it because it didn't focus on gorey details. Good read
