"His civilization was at best but an outward veneer which he gladly peeled off with his uncomfortable European clothes. ... That the fine things in life—art, music, and literature—had thriven upon such enervating ideals he strenuously denied, insisting, rather, that they had endured in spite of civilization."
I guess I've read too many of these. Some are better than others, but this is the first one that actually bored me. Almost none of the book was spent in the lost city itself, and rather than a sense of exploration, it just seemed like a perpetual chase through the jungle (just like book 4).
