140 books1,129 followersMary Josephine Dunn was born 22 September 1947 in Lancashire, England, UK. At the age of eleven she went to an all-girls boarding school, Layton Hill Convent, Blackpool. At sixteen, she wrote her first romance, with a medieval setting, completed in installments in an exercise book. From 1966 to 1970, she obtained a degree in English history from Keele University in Staffordshire, where she met her future husband, Ken Beverley. After graduation, they married on June 24, 1971. She quickly attained a position as a youth employment officer until 1976, working first in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, and then in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.
In 1976, her scientist husband was invited to do post-doctoral research at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. When her professional qualifications proved not to be usable in the Canadian labour market, she raised their two sons and started to write her first romances.

Süperdi, süperdi, süperdi :D Diyecek başka kelime bulamıyorum. Uzun zamandır hasretini çektiğim, kendimi kaptırabileceğim bir kitap bulduğuma ne kadar sevindiğimi anlatamam. Zaten orta çağ kitaplarını her zaman - ne kadar karakterler mutlaka inatçı, olaylar o çağa uygun olarak sert olsada - sevmişimdir. Karakterler yüksek dozda iletişim bozukluğundan yakınsalarda kitabın sonunda bunuda hallettik ve içimiz rahat bir şekilde kitabı kapattık :)
Konumuza gelirsek hikaye 1060 ların sonlarında İngiltere'nin Fransız Normanlar tarafından işgalinde geçiyor. Oğlumuz bu savaşta çok kritik bir yerde çünkü annesi ingiliz ve yılın bir kısmı İngilterede bir kısmında Fransada yaşamış. Hikayede bir bağlılık savaşıda var. Ülke işgal edildikten sonra isyanın başındaki kişi ise Aimery'in dayısı. O yüzden kendi babası bile oğluna şüpheyle, her an onlara ihanet edecekmiş gibi bakıyor.
Kızımız ise bir norman savaşçısının kızı ve annesinin dileğiyle manastıra kapatılmış. Ama babası ve abisi savaşta ölüpde topraklar ona kaldığında evlendirilmek üzere İngiltereye getirilmiş. Arazisini tanıması için topraklarına gönderildiğinde bir gün etrafı dolaşırken derede yüzen bir adamla karşılaşır ve anın heyecanına kapılıp gözünü başka tarafa çeviremez, çevirdiğinde ise çok geçtir adam onu kıskaçlarının arasına çoktan almıştır. Adam diğerleri gibi ona kur yapmıyor aksine onu istemediğini her fırsatta belirtiyordur. Ama kader öyle oyunlar oynamıştır ki bu ikili kendilerini evli ve tehlikenin tam ortasında bulmuşlardır. Copyright 1992, this is a very early JB. I'd have to say, not one of her best. This is a new read for me, though I've read the 2nd & 3rd in the series.
The problem with writing a medieval is women in that time period were mere property. No rights. That doesn't translate well to a woman of the 20th or 21st century.
I'll tell you now - the heroine isn't raped by the hero. There's an almost rape by another character, but the hero stops it just in time.
While well written, the story is exasperating! The heroine thinks the hero's a traitor. The hero thinks the heroine is an evil manipulator. For many chapters (too many!) they go back & forth. The heroine has her TSTL moments. There's an evil ex of the hero that causes trouble. The heroine has evil relatives that physically abuse her. Jeez!
I was able to finish the book & it did have some interesting history. However, I don't think this one's a keeper!

This is a solid Jo Beverly novel, easy to read, amusing, sexy and historically interesting. what gives it the last star for me is the quote from the Saxon poem at the beginning of the book.
Dawn often finds me grieving in solitude/for there is no one still living/with home I dare share/the truth of my heart.
(I apologize if the quote is wrong, I have to use my memory as my copy of the book is at the back of a bookshelf stacked three deep.)

March 6, 2024Omg wow... I was soooo bored with this. Between the history heavy info-dumps, and my absolute apathy towards any of the characters, I decided to DNF rather than push on and formulate actual bad things to say.
I do think this will appeal to readers looking for books with an old school feel to them. 🤔 From what I read, it didn't seem fantastical, it had it's feet planted in reality I think. But I honestly didn't get very far. 😬
I hope this finds it's way into the happy hands of many avid readers! ☺️ It just doesn't belong in mine. 🤫

Çok hoşuma gitti. Teeee ne zaman almışım öyle duruyordu, beklentimin çok üstünde bir kitap oldu. Böyle hafif Düşler Krallığı tadında. Ben sevmem aslında orta çağda geçen hikayeleri. Fazla geliyor bana o sertlik,tecavüzdü,kadını hor görmeydi,kırbaçlatma yok uzuvlarını kesme vs. Bu kitapta da bazı yerleri yadırgamadım değil hani. Gene son zamanlarda hist konusunda beni etkileyen yazar sayısı hızla azaldığından,bu kitabı ayrı bir yere koyuyorum. :D

Jo Beverly always includes a lot of hisorical insight into her books and this one delivers with what the initial conguest of England by the Normans might have been like. The hero & heroine are drawn toghether but like real people, if they would just share their concerns, problems would disappear. This is a good book once you get "into" it and it keeps the pace until the end.

I loved that Madeline stayed true to who she was no matter what obstacles came her way. Aimery what such a boor at times! Grrr! But all in all I was happy and satisfied with this book!

For reasons unknown to me, I had this listed as fourth in the series. I'm pretty sure I've read Dark Champion - now I need to find a copy of The Shattered rose before tackling Lord or Midnight which I've got on my TBR pile.
I was only medium keen to read something set around the time of the Battle of Hastings (1066, still one of the rare dates I retain), but I was nonetheless swept up into the story and enjoyed the perhaps somewhat overlong trials of Madeleine and Aimery. Ye olde misunderstanding runs rife here too - and I suppose that was what I found overlong, not the story itself. I read it while sick in bed and it transported me very nicely away from the sore throat and coughing. I remain a fan of Beverley's.

Madeleine de la Haute Vironge should marry a suitor out of the chose three by the king.But even before she could meet the three she meets Golden Hart( hero in disguise).
Finally she meets the contenders for the so called marraige.Aimery doesn't want to marry her and so made it clear to her.But there is a strong chemistry between them. Ultimately she goes for Aimery knowing the fact that he will not love her.
The chemistry betweeen Aimery and Madeline and so is the need to keep the secret as a secret !
Its an intresting book with a damsel in distress saga ,with a hero as a saviour as usual, but still different.
If you are a romantic freak then you will enjoy this book for sure:)

This book is the first in the Dark Champion series. I think the stories are related only slightly.
I did not have a good first impression of Aimery as the author introduces him returning to the castle owned by his father and straight arming someone out of his way. That came across as arrogant. This was mitigated to some extent because he was upset with his brother. They had found some outlaws on their land and his brother had ordered the immediate execution of the outlaws. Aimery thought they should go through a trial.
Aimery’s sense of justice works its way throughout the book because he is sent to England just after William the Conqueror became king. The situation between the Normans and the Anglo Saxons was tense.
Madeleine and Aimery meet by accident when he is trying to help the English by pretending to be an outlaw. Madeleine pretends to be her own companion. She immediately acts like she wants to have sex with him which is surprising since she spent a good part of her life in a convent. He pushes the situation too far. He also coincidentally stops her from being raped by someone else in an unlikely stroke of luck. His fellow outlaw says he should not have stopped it. The men through out the story consider faithfulness and respect to be unnecessary.
Sex and rape are themes of the book. Madeleine and Aimery lust after each other. The author tells of Aimery’s first time when he was allowed to have sex with anyone he wanted and he picked a married woman. He was 14 and the result was a child. A stable boy is raped by another knight while Madelience does nothing in shock. On and On.
In another scene, Aimery throws water in Madeliene’s face. In another, he asks if a 13 year old girl has filled out with the implication that question was if the girl was ready to be married and have sex. Aimery mistakenly believes that Madeliene is cruel to the people of her land and he is vicious in return. At one time, he thinks she is hysterical and gives her a hard slap. When they have sex for the first time, he says “At least I don’t have to beat you today.”
I loved the poem at the beginning of the story. The partial quote from “The Wanderer” is this:
“Dawn often finds me grieving in solitude,
for no one still lives
with whom I dare share
the truth of my heart.”
I read the book 30 years after it was published.
I did not care for the story and do not recommend it.

Oh my heavens, another wonderful novel by Jo Beverley. She sets the gold standard for medievals. Sometimes I think that I'm too tired to read, that I don't have enough time, that my eyes are strained from all the other work I do and it's just too annoying to read... and then I find a good book and I can read for hours and hours, forgetting I'm even reading, completely lost in another world. Is this book structurally perfect? No. The hero is actually a bit "too" harsh, which means that the hero and heroine don't get quite as much alone time to interact as one would like (but they can't because if they did, they'd talk through their misunderstandings). Medieval men were not in touch with their feelings, to say the least. Furthermore, the plot surrounding the hero's secret identity isn't very strong: just a bit of suspense to linger over the pages. This flimsy plot does tie up nicely, however, with real history, which the author has exhaustively researched. What would be structural fatal flaws in another book don't matter too much here, because the author is able to achieve Life in the pages.

This sounded very interesting - the hero of the peope lives a double life as a valiant and favored knight. The heroine may be on to his secret but is unusre what to do about it. Saxons and Normans and Saxon-Normans. Ultimately, this story did not deliver.
Madeleine is convent raised and talks a good game, but ultimately does very little. We are told things happen to her (but they are not really included in the story). And we are told she has strong feelings, which she half -heartedly and ineffectually defends which ends up with her actually doing and accomplishing nothing. She is clearly not in control of her own fate and comes off as a tres weak heroine.
Aimery was there. He really didnt seem to do much vigilante stuff or very much knight stuff. But apparently he looked like a faerie prince. I wasnt sold on him ir his behavior.
I didnt love the premise for the "baddie", partially because i dont like all that sordid history in my MCs.
The relationship strife here was all due to a misunderstanding that communication could have completely clarified. Did they bother communicating? No, they are winning olympic gold at ignoring each other. Was there a hot second (literally one line that was given so little importance i wonder why it was even there) where i thought they were going to resolve this and move onto something more interesting? Yes. Did they resolve it and move on? Absolutely not. AND THEN THE ACTUAL RESOLUTION WAS ALSO LIKE 3 SENTENCES!!

Quite a bit to digest, so it was more to chew through than the regular fluff I devour. 🤪
It was slow going at first, to keep things straight and try to understand how all the groups related to or worked against each other. But the pace picked up,at the end, and thankfully, Aimery’s and Madeleine’s tale wove all the political intrigue and history together nicely and enjoyably.
I may have to take a break before I continue in the series. Thanks to Ms. Beverley for the rich research.

Z knihy jsem byla celkem nadšená. "Historická romance", která ale není jako každá druhá. Měla své kouzlo a dokázala překvapit. Nejsem si však úplně jistá, jaké pocity mám z úplného konce knihy. Možná dám knize druhou šanci při druhém čtení. Třeba už mi tam sedne i ten konec. Po prvním čtení však hodnotím 3,5 z 5ti hvězd.

Good grief, this woman is so annoying! I was prepared for a 4 star, then 3 star review until she keeps on with her crazy actions. JB's formula is tedious and predictable. Skimming now to FINALLY get to the point where they kiss, make up, and live happily ever after. At least the history was interesting.

3.75⭐️ This story was so interesting to me because I don’t read much about this time period. The politics and the social norms and everything was so fun. I struggled a lot with this couple though. The main conflict was a miscommunication that didn’t get resolved until about 90% through, which was endlessly frustrating. So most of my enjoyment came from the novelty of the story.

Ach, tak to mi sedlo jako prdel na hrnec. Aimery a Madeleine jsou skvšlý pár a autorka je k sobě vedla tak skvělými, napívanými kličkami, že jejich příběh musíte milovat. Zasazení příběhu do Anglie za vlády Viléma Dobyvatele bylo dobré, až na ta jména :D

Jo scrive molto bene, ma se giunta a ¼ del romanzo tendo spesso a sbadigliare, meglio lasciar perdere. Troppi complotti e battaglie e poco, pochissimo romance. Peccato.

şöyleki olaylar şu yönde başlayıp gelişiyor:
oğlumuz Aimery baba tarafından normandiyalı..anne tarafından ingiliz....
babası Guy da küçük söz dinlemez -ama merak etmeyin efendi- oğlunu çok seviyor..
Aimery William'ı destekleyip tahtta çıkmasında yardımcı oluyor..ama William'a karşı
gelen adam da dayısı..ve dayısına bağlı..Tabi ki önceliği kral ama hem babası hemde
kral Aimery'in kimin tarafında olacağı konusunda biraz endişeli...

Kızımız Madeleine manastır hayatı yaşıyor..çünkü babası ve abisi William tahtta
çıkarkesn onun yanında savaşıyorlar..annesi o sekiz yaşındayken ölmüştür..
ve evleride savaş yüzünden yok olmuştur..Bir gün savaş bitmiş William tahtta çıkmıştır..
Medaleine tam abisinin söz verdiği üzre manastırdan kurtulacağını düşündüğü sırada
ziyaretine Matilda -William'ın eşi..kraliçe olcak- gelir ve ona..babasının savaş yarası
yüzünden..abisininse yanına gelirken boğulduğu haberini verir...
kızımız elbette bu kayba üzülür..ve Matilda ona birde babasının bir baronluk ünvanı
aldığını söyler..bazı olaylar sonucu kızı evlendirmek için yanına alır ama daha sonra
evlenene kadar -akrabalık ilişkisini hatırlamıyorum..-amcası ve yengesiyle birlikte topraklarına bakmak için kendisine verilen toprakları kontrole gider..
ama amca gaddar..yenge kötüdür..onlardan baya bi çekecektir..neyse...
okuyucunun merakını arttırmak adına nasıl tanıştıkları askıda kalsın..ama Aimery Madeleine yi önce hizmetçi sanır..Madeleine de onu köylü gibi bişi sanır ama aslında Altın geyik diye halk arasında bilinen Aimerydir..bunu daha sonra öğrenecektir.. ..neyse ki çok geçmeden gerçek açığa çıkar..
ahhh bana kalsa her detayı anlatırım..ama her romanda olduğu gibi bi şekilde tanışıklıkları devam ediyor..bazı yanllış anlaşılmalar oluyor..ve birbirlerini yanlış değerlendiriyorlar...
Daha sonra kızımız fırsatını bulup krala amcasını şikate eden bir mektup yolluyor..ve kendisinin
bir an önce evlenip nasıl yöneticilik yapılacağını bilmeyen amcasından kurtulmasını ümit ediyor...
bu bahaneyle üç kişiyi seçip kral Madeleine'nin yaşadığı yere giidiyor...
Kralın akıllıca davranması sonucu kızımız Altın geyik diye isimlendirilen ama bir çok kişinin kimliğini bilmediği Aimery ile evleniyor..burda kral çok zekice davranıyor...
neyse isteksizce evleniyorlar..bir sürü olaylar oluyor..yanlış anlaşılmalar...felan..
ama en nihayetinde sonunu sevdim...birbirlerini sevdiklerini söyleyip mutlu mesut ayrılıyorlar...
çok detay var ama onlarda kitabın içinde saklı..ben özellikle -Kralın yeğeni galiba- Judith'in hikayesini merak ediyorum...bakalım o kitap nasıl..size tavsiyem okuyun derim:)

Romanı uzun zaman önce almış ve okumamıştım...Ama keşke bu kadar geciktirmeseymişim..
Romanı başından sonuna kadar büyük bir zevk içinde okudum..

Yazarın kalemini sevdim akıcı ve etkili bir kalemi var..Roman 11.Yüzyıl İngiltere' sinde Norman ve Sakson Savaşının etkilerinin hala daha sürdüğü zamanlarda geçiyor..
Kıtlık,veba,fakirliğin hüküm sürdüğü yıllar..Tam bir orta çağ Avrupası İngilteresi..Yazar dönemi iyi anlatmış olduğu gibi..Tarihin ayrıntıları ilede kitabı boğmamış..Vermek istediğini çok güzel aktarmış bence..Kitabın konusunu kısaca değineceğim..
Madeilene kilisede rahibe olmak üzre iken Baba ve ağabeyinin savaşta ani ölümü üzere malikenesinin yönetimi kral tarafında teyze ve eniştesine verilmiştir..Ama eniştesinin zalimliği ve kötü yönetimi yüzünden malikanede işler hiç de iyi gitmemektedir....Eniştesinin zalimliğine daha fazla dayanamaz ve sonunda kararını verir .Evlenmeden malikanesine sahip çıkamamaktadır öyleyse evlenip malikanesini eniştesinin gazabından kurtaracaktır...
Krala kendisine yardım etmesi için gizlice mektup yazar ..Kralın yardımı gecikmez ona evlenmesi için 3 genç adam önerir..Odo,Stephen ve Aimery bu üç genç adam içinden Aimery'den etkilenir onu göl kenarında yüzerken gördüğü bir yakışıklı genç adamı hatırlatmaktadır kendisine...Aimery aslında Altın Geyik denilen bir kahramandır aynı karaman ise İngilizler arasında da kanun kaçağıdır..Bu yüzden Aimery ise Madeleine ile evlenmek istememektedir ve Medeleine'nin zalim olduğu ve küçük çoçukları kırbaçlattırdığı yönünde dedikodulara da inanmıştır..Aimery'nin kendisi ile evlenmek istememsei yüzünden başka bir adayı tercih etmek üzer iken hiç beklemediği bir anda tanıklık edeceği bir olay herşeyi bir anda değiştirecektir..
Birbirlerinden böylesine etkilenen çift Yanlış anlamalar,güvensizlikler yönünden birbirlerini epeyce hırpalayacaklardır..Özellikle Madeleine'nin eşini seçtiği sahne çok güzeld...Bazı sahnelerde epeyce sinirlendim..Ama yazar ikilinin arasındaki aşk ve tutkuyu güzel vermişti..Çok etkileyici bir kitaptı.. Hala daha okumadıysanız kaçırılmaması gereken bir kitap bence..Artemis Yayınlarından beklentim bu serinin arasını fazla açmamalarıdır!!..
