I sat in my room at our family’s tattoo parlor, Forever Steel staring at the phone. I hadn’t stopped looking at the picture of this crazy, quirky, insanely beautiful blonde haired blue eyed siren that invaded the Jersey Shore a month ago.
Carly Smythe was not my type at all. She was a twenty year old student at Stanford University in California, smart as hell, and funny. The shit kicker was she was so awkwardly unaware of what any man with pulse could see, and that was that she was a damn heartbreaker with a body that made me hard the very first time I saw her.
She made me crazy, she snuck out to see me, and then avoided any sexual advances I made on her, until I finally kissed her, and I didn’t wait for an invitation either: I took those pouty little lips and made them mine.
Carly was also an avid reader of those books, you know “Mommy Porn.” So my game had to be stepped up. Who the hell am I kidding? She could see through my game immediately, and it didn’t have the same effect it did on every other girl I hooked up with. And she didn’t go running for the hills, either. I fell hard… and fast.
Abe (her cousin) knew all the shit that had gone down in my life for the past five and a half years and in order to make this work, which I wanted it to... I needed to set the record straight, put it all on the line, give her the 411, and let her decide if after everything, she still wanted to give it up to a guy like me. A tattooed, pierced, f-up, with a past that was sure to send any girl into a tail spin. She was not any girl, she was…different.

I was originally sold with tattoo hottie. But this was... and not in the good way. The first 20% of the book, I was thinking woohooo I got a good one! I loved Jase and how he was with Carly. Dirty talker, sweet guy. Coming off a summer romance at the Jersey Shore, he's visiting her for 4 days, Carly attends college. And quite honestly Im not sure where that even is. I wish I was joking, but the book is very back and forth and has holes that get filled in after the fact, if at all. All is good until that 20% mark. They are at a hotel, had some foreplay, talked, and went to bed happy. She wakes up, he tells her that his ex girlfriends father has died and he has to go home. Just like that, he's confused the shit out of me and is a complete dick to her. Then he says she was just a fling, its over and flies back home. From that point on things just went crazy for me. There was so much hot and cold with these two. Non communication. Assumptions. Which we all know cause unnecessary drama. Which causes the story to go off track, which can tend to be annoying. In this case, it was. One minute they are good, making this long distance thing work. Then he's taking off, and she's being immature deleting his number and getting rid of the phone so he cant reach her. Then they are back on. Then off. Then on. Then off, and at one point 9 months has gone by. I was like what the fuck! So back and forth got old. The fights and miscommunication got old. Then I noticed holes in the story/timeline. Someone dies and there's no details of what, where, how (and its a key person) and not even a proper notification. When does a friend just show up announcing someone died, but doesn't say how? No police. It was a head shaking, scratch your head moment. The story continues onto another topic, and then after a while out of nowhere its revealed how that person died. It was like pockets of information thrown here and there. Jase had this big secret he kept from Carly, which wasn't even bad. Had he been honest he likely would've gotten more brownie points with Carly. And the fucked up thing is this story had all the potential to be a badass. I liked the Jase and Carly from the first 20% of the book, with some common sense, and I would've given this a damn 4 or 5 stars. This book left me
is a total package... bad boy, tattoo artist, gorgeous, pierced and of course tattooed.
Enter pretty Carly, on holiday visiting her cousin, daddy and her brother. The attraction is undeniable.
" Turn around. I have been dying to kiss those lips, Carly"
"Good, because after I make love to you tomorrow, for the first time, I am going to fuck you hard all weekend so that when I leave.... you will not be able to walk or think about anyone else until I see you again"
And then, trouble hits paradise. There were times that I wanted to personally give Jase a kick. That boy can be frustrating.
Jase ooo Jase
But the ending was so sweet <3 This story was heartbreaking, frustrating, sad and at the same time filled with love.
I was curios about the Steele Series so I decided to pick this up. The H was very much into the h but suddenly turned on her and started insulting her. He claimed to be devoted but had no problem abandoning her. I didn't buy his feelings for the h. Plus, the h was a virgin but behaved so overtly sexual that it didn't make sense. There are scenes where the h's mom keeps looking at the H's butt. That is disgusting!! Authors make this mistake all the time. They want to prove their H or h is really hot so they go overboard at the amount and type of attention the character receives from others. Let me put it another way, what if it was the H's father looking at the h's butt? Gross, right? Furthermore, the H's brothers find the h's panties and pass them around sniffing them. That is so wrong!!!! They also act like sexual deviants. I am on the fence about reading the next book.
Book – Jase (Men of Steel #1) Author – M.J. Fields Publication Date – July 13, 2013 Type – Part of Series – No Cliffhanger Genre –Romance, New Adult Rating – 4 out of 5 Stars
Book provided by Author (part of Blog Tour) in exchange for an honest review.
Review A bit unbelievable at times and confusing when the timelines started picking up but overall it was a cute, angsty and enjoyable read. Carly’s character was a spit-fire but innocent and lovable while Jase was a tattooed “bad boy” even though his world revolved around Carly.
They had their times of getting on my nerves with how farfetched their romance panned out to be, especially toward the end where Jase tries to win back his girl. He could be so romantic at times and then at other times – such a total DICK!! I wanted to yell at Carly to get the hell out of the relationship and STAY OUT but then there were times I wanted her to give in to Jase and live HEA!
The beginning of the book and up to the part of the surprise death of a grandmother was great….but at this point of the book and on – I found myself continually rolling my eyes.
Re-Cap Carly is staying with her dad for the summer in New Jersey and meets Jase at a bonfire one night. She is attracted to him but knows that she has to leave soon to go back to college on the other side of the US. Jase on the other hand knows he wants Carly and continually puts all his moves on her until Carly finally breaks down and agrees to date.
We follow Jase and Carly through long distance relationships, heartbreak, missed opportunities to take Carly’s virginity and secrets which shouldn’t have been kept in the past.
They experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows during a few years that this book spans in the life of Jase and Carly.
Wrap-Up Enjoyable read but over the top of believable at the end.
Worst book I ever read ... DO NOT READ !!! the dialog was horrible the plot was all over the place and the writing was just poor.
I really hate criticizing someone's else's writing but this book was just not good. I felt like the author didn't even go back and read it through it was just sloppy. The main characters would just get pissed so randomly and there would be no discussion, so your sitting there thinking WTF!!!
I'm only giving this book 2 stars cuz I didn't read the first one so I'm giving it partial credit ... And that's a considerate on my part!
Wow! This is a loaded storyline, with a great story and plot. Jase Steel is a gorgeous player and he usually always gets whats he wants. He has three brothers and a loving widowed mother. I really liked how close knit and loving the family is. Carly, she is beautiful, sweet and innocent, her parents are divorced. She lives with her mother, and they have a wonderful close and loving relationship. The first time Jase and Carly met was with her cousin, Abe at a beach party. They were attracted to each, but Carly is different from all the easy girls he's met. As the story progresses they start to fake date, but it eventually leads to a real attraction with real and new feelings for Jase. This a slow-burn romance, but you dont miss the steamy love scenes MJ Fields always writes. There is alot of stuff that goes on throughout the story and it's non-stop angst, action, drama and tragedy. I really enjoyed this book and I am definitely going to continue the series!
I Liked! The reading was pleasant and engaging characters. I love tattooed heroes and heroines with attitude. Read non-stop and the story was very good! Has the end with HEA! I'm curious to read the story of the other brothers Steel!
Okay... I'm not sure how to even begin this review. I am so confused right now, but I will try to make this as coherent as possible. This book was like the ultimate emotional roller coaster, and not really in a good way. I don't think I've ever read a book where the H/h break up and get back together so many times! Seriously, it was like a never ending case of whiplash.
I couldn't decide if I liked either character. In the beginning, Carly kind of irritated me with how shy and hot and cold she was, but eventually I found it somewhat endearing. Jase was a f**king basket case in my opinion though. I couldn't figure out if he was just messing with Carly because he wanted to get in her pants, or if he actually liked her. When it became clear he was actually into her, I softened towards him. So, my thoughts were:
Their initial romance was pretty sweet, although there was a little to much of the hot/cold going on for my taste. And I thought they jumped into trusting each other, especially Jase, with a long distance relationship pretty casually. But what the hell, it's fiction. Unfortunately, things became increasingly far fetched as the book progressed, and some eye rolling ensued.
some minor spoilers coming up...
I was pretty excited when Jase showed up to visit Carly, and I was thinking, finally we are getting to some sexy times. Wrong. Things went to shit pretty abruptly, leaving me very confused and annoyed with Jase. I mean what the hell?! Who treats someone like that, especially the girl he was supposedly "falling for." And then of course there's the obligatory miscommunication involving Carly's male friend, and Jase proceeds to be an even bigger ass, which I didnt think was really possible. I actually applauded Carly's determination to try and not let Jase f**k with her even more, but I was not pleased with what happened with Brad. And then she goes home for Christmas. I mean really, how much is a woman supposed to take?! Talk about being kicked while you're down.
I thought Jase really screwed with Carly's head, and I quickly started traveling down the road of not liking him. So they're back together at this point, she know's the reason why he left and broke with her (which I thought was pretty bullshit by the way), and, surprise surprise, his asshole ways rear its ugly, annoying head again. Gah! The Valentines day disaster stole the rest of my patience with him. What is his problem with COMMUNICATION?! I didnt think it was possibly for someone to be so utterly stupid and destructive. Of course, Jase provides some half-assed excuses for his behavior, not making me feel ANY sympathy for him. I mean really? Carly is just supposed to wait around like a love sick puppy while you get your head out of your ass? And then all his little pathetic apologies and "reasons" for his actions.
Time flies pretty quickly, and like 6 months are condensed into about 1 page. Then shit gets pretty devastating for Carly. I actually found myself getting a little teary, and thinking, jesus christ, this chicks life SUCKS.
She moves back to Jersey, where, duh, she encounters Jase again. He's all nice and playing it cool (which lasts about 5 seconds), and he does some really weak groveling. And guess what? They get back together.
I cant decide if Carly is a total doormat, or just really naive and into a guy treating her like shit.
I kept waiting to really like this book, but it never happened. The beginning held so much promise, I don't know what happened. It was sweet, then a disaster for about 75% of the book, and then ended extremely abruptly.
Jase was the first book in the Men of Steel series by MJ Fields.
Jase was the second oldest Steel sibling. We learned in the prequel that Jace ran through women quickly with no commitments. He had an on again off again girlfriend but no real commitment there either. He was a total man whore.
Carly was Jases’s best friend, Abe’s, cousin. They met when she was nineteen and was visiting her father for the summer.
The storyline took place over multiple years and multiple visits. I liked the man that Jace became, but I wasn’t a real fan of Carly. There was a lot of back and forth, push and pull with the relationship in addition to some over reacting drama from Carly. Otherwise, the premise of the story was good with Fields throwing several twists in along the way. Fields also included several threads of the storyline - some of which were confusing and wasn’t fleshed out completely, but did ultimately tie in together at the end. Lastly, the Steel family was front and center demonstrating both the fun bantering and the loyalty bond, setting the stage for the series.
Jase with Carly was fire. However, after like a certain chapter... it's like their flames go out. Someone blew them out.. and I don't even understand why! So things are heating up between them and then he leaves. He left because his ex girlfriends father has just died. I don't know why he was all shook up about it.. or why he was so determined to leave.. but hey, it's not my life.
Then Jase goes from swoonworthy to a douche bag in .05 seconds flat. He tells Carly that they are over and that she was just a fling. After that moment, I wasn't shipping for them to end up together. I get that some books are like that.. the whole hot and cold kind of moments flip-flopping throughout the book. For some reason, this book just really rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it was my mood that turned me off of it. Or the characters. Or mostly Jase. Or Carly. OR BOTH BECAUSE THEY ARE SO FREAKING IMMATURE.
Yeah, this book really annoyed me. I hope that the next book is better. Please let it be.
Main characters are sickeningly immature and petty, seriously could not stand either of them. That along with the back and forth with their relationship and the random, rushed plot twists every other chapter, it was a massive eye roll for me. Will give it some points because I did read up to the end but I really should’ve DNFed.
I will say, after reading the short novella before this book, I had a really low expectation and honestly expected to DNF. I guess the fact that I finished and gave it a three star rating indicates that it wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating.
My Thoughts: - The h (19) felt just a bit too naïve. The fact that she couldn’t even say vagina and said “who – who“ was just childish. Also, pretty sure it’s not spelled that way. - I love the fact that the H (22) was not the manwhore he seemed to be in the novella. He actually stayed true to Carly even while they were apart. - I was completely surprised by Jase’s character. He wasn’t anything like the way he was portrayed in the novella. Not at all!! Thank god!!! I kept thinking I was reading about a completely different person, and I was so glad he wasn’t the same asshole. But still, if someone is expecting that character to show up here, they will be disappointed. They are 2 different people. - sometimes the writing just felt disjointed. There were times where I had to re-read a sentence a couple times in order to understand what was being said. - lots of grammar errors - lots of spelling errors. Not even the spelling error in the blurb has been corrected (tare instead of tear). Ugh! - first kiss was around 30%, but the bedroom scene didn’t happen until about 95%. Although they fooled around a little bit in between, this didn’t have as many sex scenes as I would have expected (once again, based on the novella) - The rest of the brothers did not win me over. Their constant references to sexual things was just immature. - during their break up, Carly starts to date another man. Jase is convinced she’s the only girl for him and does not get involved with anyone else. This is so opposite of the way I would’ve expected it to play out. However even though Carly technically has another boyfriend, when she comes back to visit Jase she is drawn to him again and starts kissing him, which means she’s cheating on her boyfriend. She had a bit of a double standard, it appears - Jase was a great dad, and I loved seeing that side of him. - some predictable things in the plot.
Overall, I wasn’t blown away. The lower rating is primarily due to the disjointed writing, the grammar errors, and the spelling. I was pleasantly surprised with Jase and I will probably continue the series. If you want to read this series, skip the intro novella. It left a bad taste in my mouth, I gave it a one star rating, and I almost didn’t read this book because of that intro. I did write a small review for that novella and you can read it to see why I rated it so low.
I love a rollercoaster read. Emotional, frustrating, hot, angst, drama, humour, twists, and turns, this had all of that, I loved it.
Jace frustrated me, I got impatient with the characters and the plot but in a good way.
Told in dual pov's which I like. This is a college break romance, Carly is visiting her dad and after meeting Jace their relationship becomes more than just a summer fling.
Each book I pick up from MJ Fields I begin to realise she is becoming one of my favourite Authors I know from the start I'm in for a good read.
looking forward to reading more in the series and from this author.
Jase, Jase, Jase.....Communication is key my friend!!!
This review is hard for me because I really loved the story but I still spent a lot of the time confused. Sometimes it was hard to tell who was actually speaking, but I powered through. :) This book only helped clear up some of the confusion I had from the novella that introduced the Steel family to me. I soooo wanted it to explain to me what made Jase so reckless before Carly, but it did not do that until later in the story. Both main characters are very likeable but Jase was extremely moody!!! I wish Jase hadn't pushed Carly so hard sometimes!! :( Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed Carly from the start, but it took me longer to really like Jase. He's actions seemed more like a 13 yr old boy than a 23ish yr old man. I just wish it hadn't been so hard for Carly and Jase to get their crap together!! Jase definitely kept his struggle his own and didn't learn til much later to trust Carly enough to tell her the truth. I think that things would have been much smoother with the story, if Jase had just been up front with Carly in California. I know he thought he was sparing her his "crap", but he didn't see that he was the one hurting her and that she was different and what he needed to make it through his "crap." What happens to Carly late in the book, broke my heart and was made worse by Jase not knowing!! Of course he redeams himself and Carly, being the good girl she is, forgives him very quickly and then we see Jase emerge as the man he was meant to be once he got his girl for real!! Now this Jase was something to behold!! I sure hope we get to see more of them in the future because I don't feel the ending was long enough!! Jase was finally becoming the man he should have been earlier in the book and then it ended??? (Like a movie on LMN or Hallmark!! hahahahaha)....WTH?!?! hahahaha. Overall though, it is a great start to a series I know will get better and better!! Please Ms. Fields....make Jase and Carly happy from now on!! ;)
I can't wait to read more about these crazy characters and watch Ms. Fields progression in storytelling!!
I've definitely found a new tattooed, pierced badboy to swoon over! Jase Steel was definitely a playboy, but that all changed when he met Carly, she made him want to change for the better; with her he found a reason to forget about the fuck up he used to be and consider the possibility of actually having a future again. I loved how intensely he felt for Carly, some of the things he told her were absolutely beautiful.
Jase definitely had some douchebag moments though, but I can forgive him for it especially when you consider how his world shifted on it's axis when he came to visit her. When he was forced to disappoint her again around Valentine's Day, I was heartbroken for Carly. Life kept on getting in the way & keeping Jase from Carly and she was kept in the dark during these times, which ultimately wound up being too much for Carly. All of the heartbreak that these two had to endure during their separation could have been avoided if Jase would have just communicated with Carly. Even with his communicaiton shortcomings, I loved how Jase grew & matured from his experience. This was a great hidden gem that I stumbled upon, and I'm so happy I did! Jase Steel is definitely swoon-worthy reformed playboy and I hope that we get to see more of Jase & Carly in the forthcoming of the Men of Steel novels.
Jase is possessive or protective of Carly, I mean I would be too, "well she isn't your girlfriend," Jase glared at him, "So it's none of your fu..." They love to tease each other and for Jase well that situation gets a little 'hard', "it's not funny. S*** is getting really tight down there. Buttons are going to fly." And Carly she appreciates his endowments, "he was hung, like really hung, that beautiful thing. Hung. Not just laid there - it effing hung!" Carly has a temper and well Jase is the one that gets it, "leave! Just leave!" He looked surprised which pissed me off," What am I supposed to be happy? This is effed up. I really just wish you hadn't come at all. There you have it. Is that what you are waiting for me to be pi**ed Jase? Do you want me to hit you like she did? I am not her! Just go!" Jase he's really possessive of his girl even when his brothers are concerned probably more so, "as I told them when I walked out and found them passing the panties, you're mine. They sniffed once and if they do it again I'll cut them when they are asleep." Jase is just so hot you can't help but love him, "Eff Carly," he pulled out of my mouth, and I caught his piercing between my teeth and he stopped, "you gonna let go of that?" I shook my head no, "So now you're going to drag me around by my c*** AND my heart?" I'm excited for the rest of the boys's stories.
Carly's mishaps are hysterical - it's like she loses her equilibrium when Jase is near. When they were in her car trying to move the seat, I LMBO! Carly is Jase's #littletornado Jase is Carly's #piedpiperofpootie Carly's mind can sometimes get in the way of living - she's always in her head - thinking, analyzing, contemplating. Jase's world gets rocked. Secrets are kept. Feelings are hurt. It's an uphill climb to get back to where they want to be. We all make choices.. but can we live with the consequences and repercussions of those choices? Carly's devastated. Jason begins to plan and if there's one thing that's apparent about the #MenofSteel, when they are on a mission, there's no stopping them! #OGCB #MommaJoedidntraisenofool
Jase is a sexy tattoo artist that has some enjoyable piercings and knows how to please a woman. When he meets Carly he starts with the little games of "fake dating" to spend time with her while she's visiting. Their friendship is an interesting one to say the least. More often then not I become so frustrated with Jase and his back and forth battles within himself and the things he says and does to Carly. As we get further into the story we learn more about both of them and Jase starts to grow on me and I start to adore him all over again. We're hit with a big surprise right along with Carly and totally thrown for a loop and again Jase flip flops with his actions. As annoyed I was with Jase I wanted to keep going to see what would happen next. I enjoyed this story and will continue to on with the Men of Steel Series. This is my unbiased and voluntary review
I almost skipped this one because I saw a few negative reviews, but I had already spent the money so I figures WTF. I am so glad I didn't miss this one. I really liked it. It's not perfect, but damn is it good.
I LOVED Jase, I mean I LOOVVEEDDD him and you know what, he totally deserves it which made me love him more. And Carly was young, and maybe a little impulsive, but seriously, anyone with an ounce empathy can understand her motivations. Yes, this couple has a few back-and-forth's but you know what? I believed them all. Sometimes life/timing/karma just screws with you, and it screwed with these two...but I totally bought it. The end was a little fantasitcal, but whatever, this isn't real life, and that stuff was peripheral. The romance was sweet and sad and solid. I will definitely be reading the next book.
This is Carly and Jase's story as well as an introduction to the Men of Steel. I enjoyed the twists, turns, and slow burn of this story. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the standalone series of tattoo, sexy, family of bad boys.
This book was read for #Smutathon challenge - Slow Burn.
This specific video book review is included in the December 2018 wrap-up.

Seriously liked this book. I won’t lie I had issues with it. There were quite a bit of grammar issues in it but it was easy to tell what was meant. There were surprises in here I never saw coming. But the thing I liked most about Jase was the fact that he was chasing after her for over a year and the whole time he was never with another woman. Something we don’t see often in books.
This was my first M.J. Fields book and I LOVED IT!!! Jase ended up being an even greater guy than I had imagined. I totally loved him. I laughed, cried (lots), yelled, at times I wanted to choke someone, and while I didn't always like the way things turned out, I ended up really enjoying this book. I look forward to reading another M.J. Fields book.
This is an older series, published in 2013. I think this series got such a strong following that the author continued to put out smaller size books and novellas to keep the story going and her fans happy ~ I love that!!! But also might make it confusing for readers who aren't sure where to start or how to dive in and read them in order. I do believe that this author is still currently writing other books that spinoff from this original series - which is why I am starting here! I love reading in order to really maximize all the relationships and feels!!!
This review is more of a recap, mostly for myself to keep track since I am reading these books and novellas as part of the Men Of Steel Box set and will continue on with everything that spins from here. I am assuming that regardless of how they are numbered by Goodreads that the order the author set them up in her box set would be the order they are intended to be read. I will update if that is different. The author's website has a great reading order section.
Jase, book 1 - introduces Jase and Carly and their story. I am definitely invested in the Steel's already!! Jase and Carly had quite the ride and they definitely have the chemistry. A lot happened in this smaller size book and I think(and hope) a lot of it is ground work for all the stories to come. So far we still have Jase and Carly, little Bella, Jo his Mom, all the brothers - Cyrus, Zander, Xavier, Carly's cousin Abe, her brother Cameron, her Dad and Barbie, and Thomas. All in all 4 stars and looking forward to all that is to come!
This book! OH!!!!! This book. It COULD have been sooooo good but instead it was sooooo...not.
If I had not received this book via Amazon for free, I would have returned the book for a full refund. As it stands now, I may send the author an e-mail and ask her to pay me just for reading this hot mess.
So many problems...so little time.
#1 - Grammar, spelling, punctuation, tense changes - look...I know everyone isn't an English major but, if you're going to write a book, at least have a GRASP of the English language. Changing tense in the middle of a sentence is not cool. Also, it's means it is; that's means that is, etc. There, their, they're...are not interchangeable words. They all mean something different.
#2 - The premise - This story has a good premise (which is why it's a 2-star rather than a 1-star) but half the time, the reader has zero idea of what's going on. i.e. And Jase and his family. What's with them? There is such weird dialogue going on with them, it is hard to figure out who is saying what and what they are saying when you figure it out.
Honestly, writing this review is giving me a headache.
Dear Ms. Fields - get a better editor. Heck...send the book to me and let me edit what you've already put out and I'll bet it comes out a lot better.
Do yourself a favor, don't read this book. You'll be as confused as I am and, your head may not hurt as much, but you may be tempted to throw the book across the room or in the trash.
