I am getting around to listing older books I read some time ago, usually at the time of publication, so in this case 1987. I had amassed a large theology section in my home library. A few years ago I sent box loads to a friend's father who was a hospice chaplain, now senile, so who knows what his son will do with all of those books. I held onto this one for a long time as it's such a wonderful history of the Catholic faith and it's Apostolic Creed. I'm finally passing it on. Entering it on GoodReads will remind me of it's existence, and that intense period of study I undertook for eight years, supported and encouraged by those dear religious.

Marthaler's 1 volume history of the Creed used in the Catholic church is rich in detail, with excellent, easy to read writing. The best 1 volume book on the subject. Buy a copy for your library - dog-ear it, highlight passages - you will want to refer to the book over and over. An indispensable reference.

A bishop in Alaska put me on to this. I, a Roman Catholic priest, had never put together the Creed in my priestly, let alone Christian, life.

A great study, and popularized in the best sense of the word. I have used it as a teaching mechanism for those who have questions and have delighted in taking a friend through it a chapter at a time, every two weeks.

It helps me to solidify my faith as well.
