Born in 1960 and raised on an overdose of television, NASA, and science fiction, Ryk Brown has worked as a cook, rock guitarist, stage lighting technician, and paramedic. He currently resides in Northern California with his wife, daughter, and cat. By day he fixes computers, and by night he creates stories.
Having spent his entire life "thinking stuff up", the advent of digital publishing has finally given him an excuse to write it all down and share it with others. ("Others" meaning someone other than his poor wife and daughter.)
A long-time fan of all things science and space, his goal is to write and publish an on-going series of sci-fi adventures. To be set in his own version of humanity's future, his characters will explore the vast reaches of the galaxy, and perhaps even the universe. He invites you all to join him on this journey through his vivid imagination.

This is turning out to be an all-together enjoyable series of books. Each episode is a quick read and helps tell the story in a nice, relaxed manner. Brown focuses on making each book part of a larger whole, which means that he can take his time to discuss what is going on.

I like the feeling that I get to explore the universe with the new ship. I get to be naive with the (new) Captain of the vessel, and I get to relish in his growth and mistakes.

While the story line is cliched, I don't like it any less then Start Trek: Voyager. In fact, I like it for the same reasons - I have strong emotional attachments to the characters, there is an interesting universe, and there's a clear sense of right and wrong to boot.

I look forward to reading the rest of Brown's books.

It became too predictable by the third book...as soon as things got a little better, you knew something bad would happen. It was a good read towards the beginning, but by the 3rd book, I was finding myself looking for other things to do instead of reading.

Kind of boring.

The first book is three stars, the second is four stars, and the third is three stars.

Overall, my sense of the series is I give it three stars.

The author tries to keep the enemy, the Jung, in mystery at the beginning of the book, and doesn't even describe them when the main characters see them, except for one small description.

This series is about rebellion in a distant galaxy and humans vs humans. It's people in their twenties versus an entire civilization. Not interested in reading about Ensigns who got promoted recently. Some of the things written in the book magically happen through the author writing - things that are too convenient happen. This book also lacks character development.

Enjoyable sci-fi

I’m not super into sci-fi, and there was definitely a scene and some language I could’ve done without (probably at the upper end of the YA spectrum?). That said, the characters are really well developed, the action is engaging, the suspense tense…really good writing as far as all that goes. Seems like the sexuality and language generally toned down as the story went along, too, which I appreciated. Some really great twists in the story, too! And incredibly believable. So, on balance, I enjoyed it. Just would prefer not to have to read with my censor guard up…

Keeps the pages turning

I was skeptical. There are stereotypes here. There are a few repeated dialogues the author missed in editing. However, when it comes right down to it, I enjoyed the characters and rooted for them. There are resemblances to classic Star Trek - this is not a bad thing. Onward to episode 4 and crossing my fingers that the story, characters and action continue reeling me in.

Outstanding action packed series

I've read 30 books in The Frontiers Saga series, the 4 prequel books starting with Netcast: Zero, the 15 books in part 1 of the saga and the 11 books published so far in part 2. I never wanted to stop once I started reading one of the books. Believable characters that show the best and the worst of humanity, engrossing storylines and action scenes described in such detail that you almost feel as if you're there.

An amazing book!

This book begins a wonderful Sci-fi series. I've read the entire series twice already and have decided to read the whole series again! Trust me! This series has it all! New human worlds, space battles and intriguing characters who are far more than cardboard cutouts. Read this book, then the rest! You'll love them all!

Amazing start to this saga!

This is an amazingly exciting start to this saga! The writing is fun and enjoyable. The technology used by the author feels "close at hand" and is very approachable. I am thoroughly enjoying this as I return to reading sci-fi. On to the next episode!

Engaging enough

Quite enjoyable if a little bit like YA fiction at times. In the end I was very glad to find there were more books available in the series and I am looking forward to seeing how the stories develop. Has promise I think.

my 1st re-read of the series has began.

This series is awesome and quite possibly my favorite space-opera along with the Kutherian Gambit and Spinward Fringe series. It keeps you turning pages.

Pretty decent

A lot of repetition of words/phrases/points. Otherwise I liked the characters, and the humor is just right. Jessica and Josh made it much more fun.

A great series

I enjoyed reading this series of books, the first three gives you a introduce to the main characters. The battles that they have to face with a new rookie captain, minimum crew and in a totally new area of space.

Just remember, right or wrong, any decision made too late is a bad decision; the best of men are sometimes called upon to do the worst of things; better to err on the side of caution at this point. the best way to motivate someone to do what you want them to do is to make them think they have a chance of getting what they want

Summary and Review:
a great scifi, mostly about the crew of the space ship Aurora attacking and running and hiding. There was a colapse of Earths population by a cyber virus, most knowledge got wiped out besides the Arch where a lot of lost knowledgew was rediscovered. Nathan was a son of one of the most influential politicians on earth and he had a bad relationships with his dad. He tried to run away by signing up to become a space pilot, he got reassigned to an experimental ship Aurora. By accident they got far away from earth with a unique technology, understaffed ship, an experimental drive. ended up in the middle of a civil war, from a war, a dictator caius taakar terorizing the worlds in that system. interesting technology, fun, tense, fast paced, other than the inbetween parts, a bit repeating itself. a lot of good star fighting sitautions. interesting to see the personalities develop esp. in the key funcitons, leadership, taking over responsibility, confidence, but still unsure of how they should do things.

Most of the plot was going on the Aurora although they visited a few planets, where they usually got discovered by the TaKar and then there was a shoot out. There were many interesting ideas around technology esp. the jump drive, the unlimited energy source as well as shielding and guns.

The final part when they were hidden next to a planet in a big asteroid where a terrorist base was located and then the subsequent fight with a Takar Cruiser which was much larger and started to bombard the planet because they cooperated with Nathan and his crew. Jaela made Nathan part of a lost prophecy NaTan was the saviour of humanity, she spread the rumours and made sure everyone was watching the sky at a given time.

All in all a very interesting SciFi, which there arent many around that would have a great balance of technology, character development, fights that hooked you till the end. Well worth a read.

I simply liked the whole story. Pretty amazing. Each of the characters was great. I kept wishing Nathan would get his act together and show some leadership - and he did!

Starship Troopers anyone?

This book started strong then deteriorated to the most basic high school version of Deep Space 9. So Ryk, let me get this straight, these outer worlds that are a 1000 light years away from a post apocalyptic Earth (+12000 years) retain English as their primary language? The tenuous plot support is that Angla (English) is the sacred but outlawed tongue in is part of the totalitarian universe. Yet all the locals speak it complete with colonialisms like "cool." One character is even cockney. Only during the initial contact with their galactic cousins does one of the new world humans struggle with communication.

Another small irritant is that (spoiler alert) anyone with any experience in operations of their state of the art ship is dead after chapter one. Convenient if you want your cast of characters to be young beautiful 20 something's.

Frontiers is filled with what passes for witty dialog and short on any real action or cultural tension. There is very little science in this science fiction beyond techno babble. To boot, its boring. I made it to 82% and discovered I didn't care how it ended. If this space opera was made into a TV series it might make it to Netflix. Animated only.

Do yourself a favor and read some Ray Bradbury.

Entertaining space adventure serial with a strong Star Trek feel.

It’s the far future. After discovering faster-than-light space travel and establishing colonies on other worlds, a devastating plague destroys Earth’s civilisation. The story starts with Earth having recovered and rediscovered space flight. Human colonies have spread across the galaxy and some are expanding empires, threatening Earth with war.

The story follows politician’s son Nathan, who unexpectedly finds himself Captain of a brand new spaceship with an experimental faster-than-light drive. The science fiction content is reminscent of Star trek, complete with inertial dampers. Nothing ground-breaking, but a well crafted space adventure with pretty good characters.

This book suffers from a rather small font, which isn’t great for those like me who have basic old Kindles. The writing is very readable and well edited, though the point-of-view constantly wanders between characters.

Fourteen ‘episodes’ are available, all on Kindle Unlimited.

Like heroine, the first taste is free!

I compulsively chain-read the entire series to episode 14. This was actually one of the most expensive reading binges that I have gone on in several years. Over the top silly, hyperactive, frenetic and just plain crazy fun. Mr Brown does a masterful job with character development, dialogue, world-building and occasionally surprising twists. My only negative, is that the very nature of his battle scenes is repetitive, especially given the "All ahead full!" Said the Captain, All ahead full, aye!" Nautical battle language, did make me long for the cut to the chase style used in Ender's Game. It takes Ryk a very long time to share the plot and storyline with his readers.

After forcibly finishing the first three episodes, it's hard for me to comprehend the high ratings this book has received on goodreads. I guess us sci-fi fans are just so desperate for a decent book or movie that we forgive way too much.

Basically, this book reads like a script to a B movie on the Syfy channel. It steals every stereotypical character trope from Star Trek and makes them even more cheesy and predictable.

I read that the author is an amateur learning on the fly, and that the episodes do get much better... but it's hard to tell that from goodreads given the near perfect ratings across the board. If only sci-fi fans would be more discerning.

I think I'm going to like this series. I usually tire of shoot-em-up space battles rather quickly but, this series seems to have more going for it than just space battles. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of action for those who crave it but, there is also more going on. The characters are relatable; the plot(s) are constantly in motion and interesting and there is adventure. I started with the first 3 episodes to see if I was going to like it. I do. It is not a deep, thought-provoking, search for the answers to questions about the meaning of life. It is an adventure and it is fun.

It was mostly enjoyable, but had several problems. It reads a bit like fanfic, and the author doesn't seem to know (or care) how actual science and spaceflight works. That could be OK, but... The author keeps trying to provide extra detail and explanations for things that just make it worse. If you're going to use phony science, that can be OK, but just gloss over the details. If the author never uses the terms inertial dampeners again, that would be a start.
