Angeline Fortin explores the world of the MacKintosh clan in this much-requested prequel to her Questions for a Highlander series.

Captain Richard MacKintosh returned from Egypt wounded, not only in body but also in spirit, after making a daring getaway from the rebel band that held him and his military unit captive for months. However, though he had escaped, his brother, Vincent; friend, Jason; and the rest of his unit had been retaken. Forced back to England to recover, Richard is determined to use that time to force the government to garner their forces to search all of Egypt if necessary for his brothers-at arms still lost in the desert.

He wanted – no, needed! – to spend each waking moment finding the help he needed and nothing was going to make him lose focus on that goal. That was until he ran into an angelic face from his past. One Lady Abygail Merrill. Abby had once been a brash, bossy tomboy who trailed along after him as a child. He had treated her as a friend, as yet another younger brother, but the lovely sophisticated woman he found in her place stirred anything but brotherly feelings.

Richard finds in Abby a welcome haven against the storm of disappointment raging around him. A sympathetic ear and a comforting embrace. It becomes too easy to lose himself in her welcoming arms.

But like him, Abby has her own demons to overcome before she can be free to love him. An accident years before had left her scarred, her natural self-confidence lost to the scornful eyes and words of the ton. She is but a shadow of the impetuous lass she’d been.

However, Richard’s return has roused in Abby possibilities she thought long dead. All the hopes and fantasies that she’d held for most of her life are suddenly alive once more with promise. Richard genuine admiration recalls Abby to the girl she was once was and guides her back to the woman she was meant to be. Abby would do anything for the man she has long loved and knows that if she wants a life of her dreams with Richard, she must first help free him from the past.

But once he is free to love her, will there be a future left for them to share?

Finally, the story of Abby and Richard whom I have met in the books I have read before this, happy to say that reading these books out of order isn’t an issue at all.

Captain Richard MacKintosh has returned to England after escaping from the rebel band that held him and his military unit captive for months. Whilst Richard escaped, his brother – Vincent; friend - Jason and the rest of his unit had been retaken. Forced back to England to recover, he is determined to force the government to support a rescue mission. What he doesn’t expect is his attention to be grasped by Lady Abygail (Abby) Merrill, a woman from his past who in the present stirs feelings in him that he cannot ignore.

Due to her wicked and contemptuous stepmother and the vanity of ‘Polite society’ (the irony of the label), after a horrible accident, one which left her scarred Abbey lost her natural self-confidence, her exuberance for life and will pushed down, but all Richard sees is a beautiful and kind-hearted Lady and in him she finds welcoming arms of affection and safety. The bond that develops between them is clear.

Abby’s father in this was a horrid and bitter man, he’s desire for wealth one Abby is willing to use, in order to help the man she loves, but in doing so she may end up sacrificing her own future/happiness.

I have to say I wanted Abby’s stepmother to suffer more than she does in this book – urgh she’s horrid.

Whilst this book isn’t my favourite in the series, I did enjoy the read. I’m really liking this author and am looking forward to reading more.

Good story but the book really NEEDS proofreading!! It's difficult to go through all the typos, repeated or missed words and grammar mistakes to get to the story.

I read the first three books in the Questions for a Highlander series last year and enjoyed the stories a lot. (You can read my review of them here: http://lifeand100books.com/2011/12/11...) Fortin created a really fascinating cast of characters that I couldn't help but get attached too. During my reading of the first three books I always wondered how Abby and Richard got together. My question was answered with this book! I'm really glad that Fortin decided to write this prequel. Abby's story is definitely one worth telling. My only complaint, and this has been my consistent complaint with all the books, is there doesn't appear to be any editing to the books. They're riddled with spelling and punctuation errors which took away from my ability to enjoy the book as much as I wanted. There is so much potential in Fortin's writing which is why the lack of editing upsets me.

Loved reading about Abby and Robert!! I actually read books 3 & 4 first not realizing that there were 2 more before. So I had to read book 0 & 1 and then re-read the last 2 again. This series is so good, I can't wait for the next one!!!

somehow I think the fact that it's shorter made it better. less time for angsty build-up!
