December 12, 2015Goldfinching. Yet another reinforcement of the ideology of the market. Don’t you dare decline submission to the popular. The stuff sells sells sells! It must be good! People like it! don’t mess with their pleasure centers.
How about being Ms MacIntosh’d? -- much more prevalent.
Or did you see how Vanessa Place got herself Vanessa Place’d? Vanessa who? Place’d in her place.
How about how Tartt was Stephen King’d. Queen’d? Whatever. And even Dickens’d?
I remember once when The Significant was told by some putative feminists that she was oppressed by Patriarchy even if she didn’t know it. That’s fucking condescending.
You do not know what you like. Of course you don’t. But if it’s popular you’ll definitely like it. And if you don’t..... well, we’ll come up with some kind of ridiculous pseudo=category like “goldfinching”.
And if you don’t like today’s genres, and don’t think they’re just as ‘valid’ as Shakespeare (because he wrote genre too and he was popular too) ; well you’re a snob. Yes, I’m a snob.

Fine if you want to read Tartt’s book. I’m not stopping you. But you want me to think, How neat! You like Goldfinch!
