Going Home to Dixie

Rate this book
The small town of Gemini, Georgia is all abuzz about hometown boy Creighton Wellington’s nuptials to a highly pretentious “Pamela-not Pam” of a well-to-do Birmingham family. Buzz Central is The High Point of Beauty hair salon owned by Dixie Harper who happens to be the mother of Creighton’s ex sweetheart, Brandy. In order to forget Creighton, Brandy attended NYU, moved to Alaska, and then to Key West. Back in Gemini, Brandy’s cousin, Frangelico Reeves, and jet setter Fi Lipscomb are also faced with their own star crossed love affairs.
As fate would have it, Brandy returns home to renovate her mother’s 1950’s era kitchen the same week as her ex-boyfriend Creighton’s engagement party at his family’s estate “Allegra”. The engagement party of the year is suddenly changed to the wedding of the year. The whole town is ensnared in the twists and tangles of old flames, late-night happenings at “Fran’s Booze and Bands” bar, and salon gossip. Throw in the president of the Magnolia Garden Club – Miss Evelyn Wellington, Bobbie Lee Whitt - “Miss Plains Peanut”, and “Lucky”, a homoSEKshul according to Miss Evelyn, who happens to be Gemini’s triple-threat cosmetologist, wedding director, and pageant coach, and you’ve got comedy, romance, suspense, and a southern novel to capture your heart.
If you like the novels of Mary Kay Andrews, Jennifer Crusie, or Jill Connor Browne’s Sweet Potato Queens, you’ll love Going Home to Dixie!

Lots of potential but missed the mark. A lot of random paragraphs thrown together. A good editor could tighten it and make it stronger. Spelling errors had me shaking my head. I live in a small Southern town like Gemini, but I can assure you there aren’t many successful business owners under 40 so Gemini is Utopia for the young.

Funny book on love and life in small southern towns

Creighton and Brandy had been high school sweethearts but life intervened. He headed to medical school in Georgia and she headed to New York knowing a long distance relationship lasting through college and medical school was not likely to.last so.she broke up before the end of high school. Fast forward 7 years. Brandy hated New York and studying Engineering so she dropped out and headed to Alaska, hated the cold and moved back to Georgia. She now lives in Atlanta but is home to remodel her mother's kitchen and help style hair for an upcoming wedding. The high school bf comes back with a fiancee who turns into a bridezilla . Great story with happy ending !

This was a light-hearted, enjoyable. and humorous read! It’s always entertaining to read about all the different characters that make up a small town and of course those that want to get far away from their small town roots to the "big city" only to come home feeling bound to their roots. For any of you who grew up in the South, you will greatly appreciate this read.

One of my favorite lines from the story. “What I’ve found is that it isn’t geography which makes you happy. It isn’t the scenery, the history, the museums, and the culture. It’s the people you surround yourself with daily that make you happy.”

I loved the characters in this book and how they interacted with each other. I think the author did a great job describing the dynamics of all the various friendships. I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book, but the end is seriously lacking. The details describing the geography of the area get a little boring- like words were just being used to fill the pages towards the end the book. Then all the important parts of the story are crammed into one chapter and it ends fairly abruptly.

Cute Southern Story

I'm a sucker for southern novels and this one did not disappoint. It had the right amount of southern charm, gossip and surprise ending to make it a quick summer read.

nope

Sorry. Not my cup of tea. Way to long and the dialogue was nonsensical and went on and on. I wanted something light and funny because I read so much heavy stuff. This novel was not for me.

true Southern romance

Being from Birmingham, Alabama, like Pamela-not Pam, I enjoyed the references to places I am familiar with. The characters are caricatures of people I’ve known. Thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Not as funny as expected

This was not as funny as I expected it to be. It was long and drawn out. It had too much flip flopping between characters.

Truly a visit home!

If your a GRITS, like I proudly am, you will think this book is a "hoot" and if your from the South then you also will understand my description. I did not know this was originally a play (or was it a musical, which would be even better) because I would love to see it performed. I related to these characters. Heck, I am related to many just like them and grew up with people just like the rest of them. This book was like a visit home! If your from the South, you will get a huge laugh out of this book. If your from the North, it will probably just confirm what you have heard about people from the South! LOL

Going Home to Dixie

This was a cute story and had very lovable characters; however, it had multiple grammatical errors, ended abruptly, and the story line was all over the place. I was a little disappointed having paid for this book. If it's on Kindle Unlimited, go for it. It's worth the time for the characters and humorous Southern dialogue.

Cute,funny

I love this book. It adequately describes how most people look down on the southern way of life. The characters are realistic and adequately show that southerners are Not just a bunch of backwards hicks.

Interesting characters

This was a cute story set in Georgia. The author fully describes the characters and each situation in detail which makes it interesting and allows the reader to understand things full circle.
