While the nation fights in The War of 1812, Amelia Samuels fightes her own battle. Her father is forcing her to marry Thomas Van Martin, the son of the wealthiest man in Millersport. Thomas is everything she's against in a man and the last thing she wants is for him to be her husband. When she has nobody to turn to, she befriends Patrick Buchanan, the village stranger. After falling in love, Amelia and Patrick discover the reason behind her unwanted engagement but Amelia finds herself in grave danger before she can make things right. Amelia's Story is about a village seeking the truth. It's what happens when one man's mistakes effects the entire community. Though the residents of Millersport never learn the complete truth, the readers of this story will know exactly what happened that frightful night of August 25, 1813.
Writer needs to hire an editor. Lacks ability to use proper grammar and spell. Do not recommend. Concept was very interesting but trial was very poorly written with lots of holes.
This story is a real heart strong puller. Right from the start, Amelia's character really makes you feel for her and Thomas makes you hate his character. I had no problem wanting his character to just go away.
The story was an excellent tale; it kept me enthralled. The actual writing? Not so good. Historically inaccurate jargon was reapeatedly inserted, and there were many syntax errors. As I read, running into these little anomalies would re-route my focus from the story... many, many times. I only stayed with it for the storyline.
This was the most horrible writing I have ever read. The storyline was a good one, but this person writing this book knows nothing about the English language. There were too many grammatical errors to even count. It was very difficult to even get through the book. I would never recommend this book to anyone and do not consider her to be an author.
Wow! This was a great story! I got so caught up in it like I was right there living in this village.
The story takes place in 1813. Amelia's mother has died, so she is the "mother" of the house while her father takes care of his business earning a living. Amelia takes care of the house, and the raising of her younger siblings.
Amelia doesn't realize that her father has been funding the other side in the war and has been found out by the wealthy family in town and is now being bribed to marry her to their son in an arranged marriage. She is not aware of any of this, other than the fact that she hates Thomas and will do anything to get out of marrying him.
She and her best friend, Emma, meet a new stranger in town and Amelia is drawn to him. She continually finds herself around him, and over the course of a few weeks, finds that they have fallen in love with each other, but still, her father won't let her out of this arranged marriage.
I don't want to give spoilers, but Amelia ends up missing.....
The story takes a few turns throughout, and I felt like I was constantly on the edge of my seat.
There is a major twist in the story that I NEVER saw coming......it was really good! Great job, C.P. I thoroughly enjoyed this story!
Needs an editor bout time! Verb tenses were completely skewed. I thought the author was a child with no English-language skills or perhaps English was a second language. Was a "barking iron" the term for a gun in that era? Annoying to read!
Horrible writing, awful story; don’t waste your time!
This is one of the worst books I have ever read. If I could I would give it -4 stars. There are so many reasons that this book is not worth reading. I feel badly that I wasted the time, and I do not wish for anyone else to do so.
First of all, the grammar, misused and misspelled words were so bad I thought I was reading the writing of someone for whom English was a second language. The verbs, in particular, were atrocious! I proofread and edit books for a living, and if someone gave me a manuscript like this, I would charge them three times my normal rate to fix this mess.
Second, the author clearly has not done her homework regarding historical speech, customs, and behavior. She uses contractions and other figures of speech that were not commonly used at the time the story was set. The characters’ public displays of affection would not have been tolerated. The use of a hypodermic needle to administer medications was not in general practice before the mid-1800s. And I do not believe that the autopsy or subsequent report would have been as thorough as the author implies.
Thirdly, the author’s character development was very poor. Her characters were mostly two dimensional, shallow and quite predictable. They’re almost all a bunch if ninnies. She so frequently switches the point of view that you can hardly tell who is thinking what.
Although I was given the impression from the description of the book that it is a Christian novel, that is certainly not the case. The author uses a great deal of profanity, has some very explicit sexual scenes and other details inappropriate for most morally sensitive individuals. There is no message of redemption, and very little growth evident in any of the characters.
The author justifies her writing by saying it is based on a true story, but I suspect that there is more than what she shared. What she does tell leaves you feeling very depressed and dissatisfied at the end. Do you self a favor, and pass this one by, even though it is offered for free.
I wad initially intrigued about the book being based on a true story. The author tells a story of truth and imagination that combines into a who- done- it like I've never read before. The story that's told could have truly been the actual events. The supposition is impressive. The ending twist-i NEVER would have guessed. Shocking! However, also a possibility in the time frame and war conditions. Definitely recommend this to mystery readers as well as historical readers.
That said, the phrasing wasn't typical in the time period and there were numerous grammatical errors. I felt the author could have been more descriptive in many places and at times the dialogue seemed forced or lacking.
This was the worst book i ever read! This author made way too many mistakes. She needs to do a way better job of editing before she puts out her ebooks. Bad author. Thomas should have been shot, hung or put in prison for what he did to Amelia. The major general also should have been shot for what he also did to Amelia! The author seemed to have sided with the stupid & dumb VanMartins ( because they were so rich ) just because they had the best attorneys. The author thinks Thomas can get away with anything just because he has lots of money. Well, he can't. He should have been found ' guilty '. No matter how rich or poor someone is, anyone who commits some type of crime needs to be tried & put in jail.
#1 I thought this was a Christian author. Amazon had it listed as such. It is not a Christian story. All because the author noted some bible verses, and characters prayed doesn't make it a Christian story. If the author tried to pass it off as Christian, shame on her. #2 It is not well written. The story drags on and on. There are a lot of errors in grammar as well as missing words in sentences. Makes me wonder if it was edited. #3 I do not like a story that kills off the main characters. #4 The author makes you think that there's going to be a happy ending, and there is not. I would not recommend this book.
The author states this is based on a true story, perhaps loosely based. I understand that the time period is 200 years ago, but I find it very unbelievable. Mostly, what I found irritating, was the high number of errors in writing, wrong tenses, words missing. There were stretches of mistakes on every page. I'd have to fill in the missing words. It was poorly written. Too much detail given to uninteresting areas. I barely made it to the end.
I made it through about 10% of this book and decided not to waste my time. After submitting several reports of content error in that short period due to incorrect usage of words, incomplete sentences, and sentences that just did not make sense, I decided to find something else to read. The description seemed interesting but the book is difficult to read. C.P.Murphy needs to find a good editor and proofreader before submitting another novel.
I was so distracted by the complete lack of proofreading, bad grammar, wrong tense, incorrect words and poor spelling that it was difficult to focus on the story. I don’t understand how this could have been published at all. Then I read that the author has done proofreading, and been a ghostwriter; really?!! Please proofread your own book, C.P. Murphy or pay me to do it. I could be gainfully employed for quite some time.
Historical fiction of events in new York during the war of 1812. Handed down by generations and put to paper by the author. Having lived in,western ny, which is almost in Appalachia, the war is still recent up there. From parks to road signage. The author noted it wasn't well received. There is A shocker. Read this. She did a good job
Despite the grammatical errors in the book as everyone mentions (I can’t believe it wasn’t proofread better), I enjoyed it until the ending. I was very disappointed in the ending. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but why did the bad guys win and the good guys loose? So disappointing and left a bad taste in my mind at the end!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read a few of the negative reviews and agreed with some to a point. The story was great . I wish the author had given (the employee) a name. There were some missing words and grammar errors.
Absolutely wonderful book!!! Some surprises along the way, but the ending stunned me! Wondering if there will be a second book to answer a few questions? Pick this book up, you will be glad you did.
This story keeps you guessing until the very end. It is a well to!d story about loyalty, family, friendships, and love. It shows the blindness that can come from hatred and the story in its entirety is well married.
The story was interesting, however, never have I seen as many typos and just bad grammar in a book. Even words that were used in conversation that would not be related to this time period.
I enjoyed this book. I did not expect the heroine to die but die she did. The book was a love story with several twists, it engaged my interest and I found it an easy read
Interesting story but needs to be edited by a professional
Intriguing story. With editing it could be better.needs polishing. Change the description section that says it was a waste of time and not for entertainment.that is offputting
What can I say I loved this book. It kept me hooked till the very end. No clue what was going to happen next. I love a book that makes u gasp out loud and this one definately did. Feel like I know all the characters personally and built up images of what they all looked like. Pick it up and read it you won't be disappointed!!
The crime commited here is both heinious and sad, The outcome very possible. Crimes for ages have been left not having an answer, I Now they would have proved part of it. I am glad forensics has graduated to make cruimes more sovlable Thank you for writing it.
I loved this story and didn't realize it was based on an actual event. Amelia was a free spirit and that angered some but for the most part everyone else loved her. Read for yourself what happens in this wonderful story.
Typical American Christian Romance. OK to pass the time but nothing special. I was a bit frustrated by the ending. What happened is finally explained (and was a surprise), but not the 'whys and wherefores'.
While this was an okay read it did have some good twists in it. This book could use more editing for mistakes throughout but it was an easy read. I would recommend it for adult readers due to some mature content.
This was an interesting and sad story. What happened to Amelia was terrible.
Although I dislike being critical in reviews, it was a poorly written story. Far too many grammar and spelling errors. It's almost as if the author released an unedited version of the book.
I appreciated this story however needed to persevere to get to the end with its twists and turns, because of the grammatical errors and missing words which I found very frustrating. Very badly proof-read if at all. Read it only if you can overlook this.
