An absent-minded wish and an accidental pressing of the button land Joey and Larry smack in the middle of a conflict between a Native American tribe and some English settlers. Yikes!
Are their lives in danger? Can Joey resolve the conflict? Will Larry teach them all how to line dance? Does Larry even know how to line dance?
The answers to these questions and more await you in the fun and fantastic adventure of THE BIG RED BUTTON.
70+ illustrated pages (may vary by device). Humorous illustrations by Anne Zimanski.
The Big Red Button is the first book in the Globaloonies series, written by Max Candee. Funny, with expressive drawings both colored and black and white, the book is sure to delight children of elementary school age. Boys will particularly like this book. There is educational value here as well, since there are some historical facts within the story. An added bonus is the "True Facts In This Story" section at the end.
Joey Papagopolis wants to be cool. He really wants to be in the Guinness Book of World Records. He knows a girl, Stephanie Logsdon, held a world record for making a mosaic out of jellybeans. He also knows someone else balanced 17spoons on his face; another person held 400 slugs in his mouth for 10 seconds. Then there was the guy who blew the biggest bubble etc. Joey tried all of these without success. Then he tried to break a record for holes in his socks, but that did not go over well with his mom. These attempts all very intriguing for 10 year-old Joey. (He really started fantasizing about Guinness World records at least as early as the first grade).
When Joey’s 5th grade geography teacher announces he will give 10 extra points on Friday’s test to any student who can solve a couple of questions, Joey goes for it. The task is to find the name of the longest lake in the world and how to spell it. Pronouncing it is important, also.
Joey finds a red button, the size of a yo-yo, under his bed. With the help of Larry, his pet chameleon, Joey and Larry travel back in time to the Colonial period in America. Joey and Larry find themselves at the lake and see a Native American arguing with a British man in a pilgrim’s broad-brimmed, black hat. They learn that the argument is over fishing rights. Larry saves the day by dancing a cowboy line dance with both of them. The two sides come to an agreement with sharing and trading between them. The lake was given a Nipmuc Indian name to mean a neutral fishing place for all to share.
Back home and then in his 5th grade geography class, Joey gets the extra 10 points for knowing the answers to the questions about the lake. He had learned how to pronounce and spell the name from his visit to the Colonial period. All the kids are intrigued with the long name and impressed with Joey.
Globaloonies: The Big Red Button is the first book in a children’s book series about 10-year-old Joey with an average first name and a complicated to pronounce last name, who has a chameleon named Larry and one day finds a mysterious big Red Button which transports them through time and space. This is an amazing start to a series, that manages to combine teaching kids history and an engaging, enjoyable adventure that all kids will enjoy.
They end up in the adventure of a lifetime, in the middle of the conflict between Native Americans and the English settlers. Joey acts like any typical kid, with typical bravado, the weird habits all kids have, and a great dose of humor. It’s easy to relate with Joey and his pet chameleon, and to find oneself completely drawn into their adventure.
The writing is down to earth and exactly on the level kids need. The book offers an intelligent storyline, throws in some historical facts (without making it sound like a dull history book) and manages to craft an amazing story that will inspire kids and grown ups alike. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous too. Recommended to every kid who enjoys reading, and every parent or teacher looking for a great book to read with their kids.
This is a cute story about Joey and his lizard Larry the Chameleon. Joey and Larry go on a magical adventure to find out how to say the name of a river and it's meaning. Being that I am tutoring children age 9-11 I find a lot of the words are large and that can be a problem. Otherwise the story was fine, every kid has an animal they love so I can see how they would enjoy this book.
I received this book for free in exchange for providing an honest review.
Joey and his pet iguana Larry travel across the country with a big red button that allows the pair to travel back in time. This book was beautifully illustrated and the story line was cute. Just because I'm a trivia addict, some claim that the Baby Ruth chocolate bar was not named after the famous ball player, but for Ruth Cleveland, daughter of U.S. President Grover Cleveland.
This is a good one for boys in the Elementary school age group. I also loved the Harry Potter reference when they were at the train station. I wish I had a Big Red button to travel through time!
This is a cute story that will appeal to both male and female populations. I would say from ages 5 -10 years of age. This book incorporates a silly lizard and a fun loving boy who is out to set a record with Guinness. This is an average boy, who has the messy room, stinky toes and all that jazz. He sets out to prove to his teacher that he is able to be the only kid in the class to pronounce this abhorrently long word. (which by the way, reading to my kids, I could not even spit out) So you would expect that the climax would be him actually doing that with his teacher, but no, it ends with him just going to sleep. Now, I am going to take into consideration that I am an adult reading this book to a child, and that it takes quite a bit more intricacy to make me think, but this book was pretty flat for me as a mom. I honestly wanted to be done. My 5 and 7 year old children (audience) were not phased by the lack of depth to this book. They liked the brief pictures and simplicity of it. however it is a chapter book that had to be read to them. Given all that, I would rate this three fangs.
Joey Papagopolis wanted to be cool and be recognized by the Guinness World of Records at the same time. When his mom bought him a chameleon named Larry, he took it to his school and soon, his "cool" status elevated. Then one day, Joey discovered the Big Red Button which brought him & Larry to exciting and unimaginable adventures. Adventures that transcend through time and space.
Globaloonies 1: The Big Red Button is a sure fun way to get my kids engaged in reading. My eldest volunteered to read this book last night but we all ended up laughing and grinning like monkeys. He sure had a hard time with the longest name of a lake in the world. The big red button sure got us all wishing we have it instead.
The illustrations were also on point, my middle child said, the pictures were colorful and fun to see. This was a very interesting book and we hope to read the next adventures of Joey and Larry soon!
"Globaloonies 1: The Big Red Button" by Max Candee is my first read from this author. I read this book with my 10 year old daughter and we LOVED it. What do you do when your teacher Mr. C gives you the option of earning extra credit in History class by learning about 'Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg' Joseph Jethro Papagopolis (Joey), our main character and his lizard Larry go on an adventure. They find a big red button under Joey's very messy bed while he was looking for a matching, not holey pair of socks, and it takes them on an adventure. The story is comical, but also teaches history in an enjoyable way. The photo's are cute, well done, and hilarious. We loved the first book so much that we ended up getting the series. Perfect for school aged children 12 and under.
This is a creative book geared to the middle-grade set of youngsters. The material is easy to read and understand with nothing frightening for children. The clever use of Larry, the chameleon, as a pet is a way to show children changes in feelings and emotions.
Joey, the main character, a ten-year-old boy, and Larry have an adventure in this book when they go back in time to learn about history from the Indians and British. This trip helps Joey answer important questions asked by his teacher. This book incorporates history into the storyline and at the same time makes learning fun for children.
This is the first book I have read in this series. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This book was an absolute delight. Joey is an engaging young character, who wants nothing more than to make it into to World Records books. The book is written with humor, and I love how the author has made a point to point out how several of the larger words are pronounced, which will help younger readers.
Joey, and his pet chameleon Larry, are a fun and likeable duo. It has a lot of little details that make the book just come alive and through it all, a wonderful and even whimsical sense of humor. This is a great book for both younger readers to have read to them (at least until parents need to pronounce the name of the lake when they get to it) and to read for themselves.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I chose to give this ebook five stars for such an excellent children's bookcalledGlobaloonies"The Big Red Button." I enjoyed it even though I am now officially called a senior citizen. I enjoyed the story with Joey and Larry his chameleon and their adventures and the mystery in it ,too. There were some great colorful illustrations as well as a very clean and wholesome story for say grade school kids. I received this book free and in exchange I was to give it an unbiased opinion in my reviews, which I did the best that I know how to. Great work Max! By Angela
A tender and enjoyable story about the adventures of a boy and his chameleon in search of a very important answer. A young boy who wanted to do or know something better than anyone.
I found it very interesting the additional chapter on the true facts.
I just hope that no other child remember to give bubble gum to a chameleon ...
I received an e-copy this book from the author's attachment to an LibraryThing giveaway that I won.
I won the 1st 3 eBooks of this series from the author on LibraryThing's Member Giveaways. I read the first 2 of them early this morning, and will read the 3rd one soon. I would definitely recommend this series to children who like Magic Tree House.
Joey might not be considered cool by his classmates, his book absolutely IS! Great story, beautiful illustrations and the interesting facts are a nice bonus. I think children will love it, just like I did.
Thank you very much, Max Candee, for sharing this!
I read this book with my 8 year old and 5 year old. The 8 year says "It's funny and good." The 5 year old laughed at some of the hi jinks. A fun silly read with a touch of history/geography
