Cinco cuentos de Charles Perrault (con ilustraciones de Walter Crane): El gato con botas, Caperucita roja, La bella durmiente del bosque, Barba Azul, La Cenicienta.
Walter Crane was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered, along with Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, one of the strongest contributors to the child's nursery motif that the genre of English children's illustrated literature would exhibit in its developmental stages in the latter 19th century.
His work featured some of the more colorful and detailed beginnings of the child-in-the-garden motifs that would characterize many nursery rhymes and children's stories for decades to come. He was part of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. Crane is also remembered for his creation of a number of iconic images associated with the international Socialist movement.
This was a beautiful book with plenty of colored pictures to catch the eye. The only thing about the artwork is the formatting seemed to be off for the background drawing seemed to be the edge of a page so you had the dark brown line running through the words and even though it was see-through it didn't help.
I enjoyed the various collection of stories that were included from Charles Perrault and although a few of the stories had some variations that I hadn't read before it was rather entertaining and brought up new questions such as Why did the fairy spare Sleeping Beauty's parents from taking the 100-year nap unlike the other stories?
This is definitely one collection that I enjoyed and would prefer keeping around.
Almost everyone of Charles Perrault's fairy tales have made their way into common knowledge and on the screen, courtesy of Walt Disney and other children's story tellers. Unlike the Grimm's and Christian Andersen though, Perrault has a less dark feeling to his writing that makes it far more accessible. His need to conclude with an evident moral is also an indication of his underlying purpose in writing the stories.
Beautiful artwork by Walter Crain, text is edited for space and slight political correctness ('Bluebeard', though oddly the sexual subtext of Riding Hood was left intact!), but otherwise is a beautiful ebook for young and old.
Who needs the Brothers Grimm? These stories are dark enough! Charming illustrations by Walter Crane add to the effect. Surprised these have become so famous, but they were interesting enough.
