This is an unusul book that juxtaposes parts of the journals of the three great leders of the non-denominational revial that shook England in the eighteenth century. Many Historians credit this "Wesleyan" revival with prevention a bloody revelution in England similar to those that toppled Monarchies in other European countries. In this book one has the eyewitness accounts from John Wesley, Charles Wesley, and George Whitefield of God's mighty works and miracles during the Revival. There is no other book that parallels these three Journals so the reader can experience the Revival through the written memories of the three who its "insiders" and guides.
John Wesley is recognized as the founder of Methodism. An acclaimed preacher, Wesley travelled extensively on horseback and drew large crowds for his outdoor sermons. A contemporary of William Wilberforce, Wesley was a strong voice opposing slavery in England and the United States. His influence upon modern Christianity can be seen by the large number of Methodist organizations in the Wesleyan tradition all over the world.
“The Nature of Revival” draws from the journals of John Wesley, Charles Wesley, and George Whitefield to provide an on-the-ground perspective of the Methodist movement, which ultimately became the Great Awakening. The Wesleys and Whitefield are very different theologically and the way they share their stories is also very different. Hearing their stories not only is an encouragement of how God has worked in the past, but flames the fires of the reader’s heart to pray for God to move again in power.
This was a wonderful collection of journal entries, letters, and sermons from George Whitefield and the Wesley Brothers. There is nothing quite like reading primary sources on the Great Awakening
