100th Run #1

100th Run: A Regressor's LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
He's got 99 problems, and an extra time loop ain't one...
The world is devolving into chaos as a game-like system has reduced the population to a series of statistics and screens.

Confusion reigns as everyone struggles to survive in this new reality. Everyone but one man. Anthony Franklin has a secret. One that gives him an edge. He has lived through this exact series of events... 99 times in a row.

Anthony needs to take advantage of all he accomplished over his past runs—every play, shortcut, and strategy—to save as many lives as possible by the end. He must contend with vicious boss monsters, elude the oppressive surveillance eyes of the system administrators, and watch his back when dealing with the scheming players that want the game to go their way no matter the cost.

In a world where every individual has their own goals, dreams, and fears, shepherding them won't be easy. Anthony must use all of his considerable experience to gain a powerful class, put the frightened populace on the right track, and take out threats before they become too big. There will be no more chances; win or lose, his 100th run shall be his last.

pretty solid Regressor story

If you like Regressor stories you should enjoy this. All the typical stuff, OP MC, cheats, and hacks. Now I know this is technically a time loop story, but it has more of a Regressor vibe because this is the last loop and he isn’t doing them over and over anymore.

Really enjoying the world building on this one. Can’t wait to see how he fights the Seraphim and where his relationship with “Sara” goes.

This is the first book I've read by this author.

I like the premise. Anthony, the MC, goes through an apocalypse 99 times and reaches the end. Then he starts over. This is his 100th run and while every run is different, there more than just the usual differences this time around.

I liked this. Apocalypse LitRPG has been a long-standing favorite of mine. The characters are well drawn and the editing while not great is decent. I did pick out a few errors but those are the responsibility of the publisher.

It's never really explained why Anthony has run through the apocalypse 99 times. There don't seem to be any special benefits besides the knowledge of what's coming next, which sort of begs the question of why do it? Maybe we'll find out in book two.

I enjoyed this. It's a relatively quick read and easy to like. 5/5*

Love an apocalypse

I'm a big fan of books that join the concept of a magical system gamifying life and the apocalypse resulting as an extension of that change. This book did not disappoint. I'm excited to read book 2

amazing book 1!

I found this author in Royal road and loved it then. I love the fully published book even more. It has everything you want in a regression LITRPG story. I can’t wait for book 2

I started listening to this feeling like it was book 2 or 3. After quite a few chapters it all came together.
Anthony is a cool character and continually fights only bosses.
It is well worth the read or listen.

Great read

A good litrpg, much more mental in the thought process. I love that we actually get to know the system instead of not knowing how thing will activate or react. Ground hogs day on a universal scale.

I'm a fan of regression stories and have read many. This one takes an interesting approach, bypassing the prior 99 cycles and just telling the story of the last. We do get to see some of the earlier lessons, in flashbacks, but it feels like something is missing... something major.

There's rarely any sense of risk and it's not clear why the protagonist is so dedicated to maximising the survival rate of other humans. You'd think after seeing the same people die time after time, the subjective value of their lives would depreciate. Regardless, his motivation is not shown and is thus not visceral.

This is an entertaining book, but not a remarkable book.

This book sits right on that borderline between 3 stars and 4. It's enjoyable enough as a story that I was happy to keep reading to the end, but it has at least one major pitfall that I would usually mark a story down for quite harshly: a lack of character work.

The protagonist is the main culprit here. We know that he has somehow lived through this scenario 99 times before, and we know that he is interested in saving as many people as possible on his final run. But other than that, we learn next to nothing about him. We don't know his past, how he has ended up in this situation, what his driving motivations are, whether he has any family and friends he wants to save, what it is at his core that drives him to keep trying over and over. We don't even really know what success or failure looks like for him. I am a firm believer that this is all character work that needs to be done pretty early to get us attached to the main character and give us a reason to care about the story.

This book gets a bit of a pass because the character starts to come to life through his actions throughout the book. It is extremely slow going, and we aren't anywhere near where I would like to be by the end of the story to keep me invested in this series, but he is not some bland one-dimensional character, at least. He is just lacking the kind of depth I usually ask for in a main character in order to get invested in their story.

Without that depth, we are left with the story to keep us intrigued, and here it is a case of the story doing just enough as well. It's a LitRPG/System Apocalypse story, so there's not much new there, and there's the character at the end of a time-loop aspect that we are familiar with from other stories, so it's not massively new there either. I do like the fact that we don't have to see all of the previous time-loops and we trust that the main character has been through this all 99 times before. I also like how many of the scenarios are playing out, especially in how the main character is manipulating and developing the supporting cast.

It's not unique enough to get me hooked on this story for the long run, though. It has earned just enough intrigue that I will pick up the next book to see where this story goes, but I am not locked in.

Overall, I would say this is a story that has hints of potential, but it's a coin toss about whether the next story heads in the right direction or not. I am specifically going to be looking for a reason to get invested in this series in the next book. I would also like to see a little more information and foreshadowing about what's happening, because while the super-knowledgeable time-loop protagonist had some fun moments in this book, it has already worn out the catch-all excuse of the main character doing something nonsensical because he has previous knowledge that only he knows (including hiding it from the reader). At some point, this becomes a bit like a deus ex machina, drastically diminishing the story's impact.

So this is a 3-star book that I'll give the benefit of the doubt and bump up to 4 despite the above mentioned flaws.

I really loved this regression LitRPG adventure first book in a new series by a new author. It is a different take on the usual LitRPG as we join Anthony Franklin on his 100th run through the game imposed on his world which has been turned into a monster apocalypse. He is the only person who has any knowledge of what is going on, he is a glitch in the system, where he is kept hidden from the system especially from Seraphim, the angel of the beginning and his followers the faithful led by Father Alexander, who are making attempts on his life. He does have the angel of the end, Esaraphilscion on his side though, as he does his best to turn the knowledge he has gained from his previous runs of the game to save as many people as he possibly can before all of Etson, Stanley and Florida are totally wiped out. He had this run all planned out, but as even the best of plans have a habit of doing, he started to see changes and in the process this time round he has acquired allies, namely Kayla, Jeff and Corwin who'd be helping him prepare for the upcoming war. So onward to book 2 of this very intriguing and exciting new series.

I found that I generally enjoy reading time loop storylines. And 100th Run is no exception. This is the story of Anthony and his 100th attempt at saving as many humans as possible when earth is taken over by a system. A system that is run by chaos and placed there solely to entertain the watcher's that thrive on seeing people struggle and die! Anthony struggle is real and good. He doesn't want power or wealth, he just wants the human race to live while giving the system his middle finger in the process. Hopefully he can do it without getting caught. Otherwise everything he's done up till now, is for naught.
I've never heard Daniel Thomas May before, take it from me, he's great.

Here's a quote that amused me:

"None of 'em matched. So you half'a look like a box of crayons barfed on you."

The entire premise of the book is that we've got this ultra badass warrior who's spent an entire century building up this absolute perfect plan to save as many people as possible in this "final run". But despite having a literal century to prepare himself, our grizzled veteran warrior melts down into a self-flagellating puddle the first time he does anything that makes anyone feel even slightly bad, and decides to completely abandon his time-tested schemes to do something he's never done before. So nearly right away, the author begins to abandon the premise of the book which to me is an unforgivable sin, especially in oversaturated genres like progression fantasy and litRPG.

just reread this, worth it.

I read the entirety of book one on Royal Road a year ago maybe more. I don’t know what the differences are in the editing of the final rendition, but I really enjoyed this book. I’m currently re-picking up this series after I originally dropped it because I read this when it was first coming out and at the time I stopped reading since I wanted book 2 to get finished and I ended up reading a bunch of other books and not coming back to this.

Well, I’m finally back and there are seven books out. I’m so excited to binge all of this and I can’t wait to read the rest.

100th Run is a solid LITRPG Regression story. For context I don't give a lot of 5 star reviews and will probably read book 2. It could have used another pass on grammar to catch a few sentences that seemed to have an extra word. It was a little darker than I prefer lacking some of the humor I enjoy pulling the mood back up.
So, after all that complaining why does it still get 3 stars? Because everything else was good. I liked the pacing, characters, world building, and generally some new twists on LITRPG apocalypses and regression.

A light read, fast paced, fun, worth the read.

I enjoyed this first book of the series, read it all the way through without skimming pages. I enjoyed the MC very likable. Enjoy the side characters who are written very well. The RPG elements are a bit light, very little stats no real level ups, but besides that the story is OK. Fun fast paced, and well worth the couple of hours. It would take to read it. We’re going to read the next book in the series.

100th time's the charm

I think this is a good addition to the other similar tales. I like that here there's an outer story or narrative device to help orient these 100 runs. The MC doesn't come off as an omniscient evolved murder hobo and displays feelings about what's going on and has come before. Definitely impressed enough to continue reading the series. Choo choo!

What a nice surprise!

I enjoyed the heck out of this book! It is light hearted enough that I LOL'd a few times. It's enough of a different take on the genre that it felt new. Hardly any glaring editing or proofreading oversights, which is great for me.
By the way, no explicit sex, this is safe for work or kids.
Now I'm off to start the next book!

I’ve read a lot of reincarnation tales and this is one of the best

Nothing is new but most of them have been reimagined or shaped to be more likeable, believable or engaging.

Plus there’s a dog, anything is better with a dog to keep you company.

Great Read

This is just a very good read. Nothing that breaks the mold but very well done in all aspects. The premise is fun and the story is interesting. The characters are unique and their interactions well written. Will read the next one for sure.

Great book that sucked me right in. Didn't want it to end. The editing was clean, no silly errors interrupting the flow of the story.
Definitely getting the next book in this series.

Pretty decent. The only problem I foresee is that the speediest run is supposed to take three years and take MC all over the world. By the end of book two it's two to three weeks, and MC has yet to leave town his starting area. So is this going to be a 15 book series?

This book made me hesitant to go in. 100 runs over and over again. I was afraid the character would be OP and cocky. But it was a lot of fun. A lot of depth to the character and I love his story. Can’t wait to keep going with it!

The story takes a different approach than most, and I liked it. It contains a good amount of humor, which is important to me in stories like this. There are twists and turns and surprises. The writing style flows smoothly. I will definitely read more volumes.

Ups and downs

Parts of the book were barely a 3-star, parts were a solid 5-star. I'll definitely read the next in the series.

I loved this book! It had a lot of the elements that I enjoy out of a regression novel. There was an OP MC, a cool magic system and a fast moving, high intensity plot. Can’t wait for the next book!

Fun Read

Very enjoyable well written LitRPG. Not over done with stats and not too complicated of a system that makes your eyes glaze over.
