A reporter from the NY Herald, Cronus Bushkill, believes he has found a pattern in thousands of missing persons cases, spanning decades. Following that pattern leads him to Vanessa Greene, who has witnessed her husband's abduction only days earlier. They follow the case only to find obstacles, mysteries, and powerful conspiracies. Benjamin Reeves, husband to Vanessa, fights to escape his captors and return home to his love. A mission complicated by being lost and alone amongst strangers in a strange land.
Born in Pennsylvania, traveled the US many times, now lives in Key West, Florida. Author of fiction, poetry, journalism, and the occasional ditty. Introvert with a need for attention. Legal title: Lord Jeffrey Adler, Master of Science. (Suck on that.)
I am not sure where to begin talking about “The Disappeared” and I live in Roswell, New Mexico which is considered by many to be the UFO capital of the United States. I am not normally a fan of books involving aliens and conspiracy theories and so on (go figure given my location) and I was not sure about this story at the beginning. However, after just a couple of chapters, I was completely hooked, and I can honestly say… I LOVE THIS BOOK! I recommend it to everyone out there if they want an interesting, suspenseful, and compelling story, even one that is full of aliens and conspiracies.
This is a story with so many different characters and settings that it may seem a bit confusing at the start, but it is well worth the time it takes to sort it out. The story starts out with Cronus Bushkill, a reporter and one of the main characters, who is working on trying to find and follow a pattern that might explain the disappearances of thousands of people. Along the way, while developing his pattern, he is able to save many people who have disappeared, although not as part of the pattern, and he aids in solving many crimes. Cronus’ pattern, however, turns out to involve aliens abducting people on Earth. While following his thoughts and the pattern, Cronus meets up with Vanessa Greene, another main character in the story.
Vanessa thinks she is crazy. Her husband Ben was abducted by aliens right in front of her, the day before she meets Cronus. Absolutely unwilling to believe that her husband is gone forever, Vanessa teams up with Cronus to help him follow his pattern in the hopes that she might actually get back to the love of her life. Along the way, these two characters, and a few others, stumble over so many mysteries, complications, and secrets that it is hard to keep track at times. In the meantime, the reader also gets to watch as Ben finds a way to escape from his abductors and, with the help of some new friends of his own, he fights to get home to his wife.
“The Disappeared” is full of so many wonderful and well-developed characters that it is impossible to name them all. Vanessa is a delight because she is very strong and determined to succeed, while we are also shown a vulnerable woman who is heartbroken at not having her husband anymore and at times feels lost. Cronus is a cranky old newspaper reporter who, while delighted to finally understand what he has seen and accomplished, can still show a soft side as he tries to deal with all the new people in his life and help them, especially Vanessa, to be safe and happy. Add in Ben, his new alien friends, an FBI agent who is not sure whether he wants to believe them all or wants to prove them liars and arrest them, and a very feisty and funny restaurant owner named Sheila who builds bombs in a shed outside of her business, and you get a wonderful, at times funny and at times very emotional book that is so worth the read.
The plot of the story is so creative, and the book is very well-written. I am very impressed with what Mr. Adler has put onto paper. How he kept everything straight in his head as he was writing is a question I will probably never have the answer to, but I’m okay with that because the finished product is so organized and riveting that it simply does not matter.
“The Disappeared,” all 590 pages of it, is an exciting and mesmerizing tale and I highly recommend it for everyone’s reading list. I, for one, cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next. 5 Stars!!

I didn’t expect The Disappeared by JD Adler to develop the way it did. The blurb only hints at what the book is about but fails to mention the story’s epic scale. I was taken by surprise but in a positive way. I expected this to be nothing more than a kidnapping story, maybe with some conspiracies. Readers get much more. It’s a long book, but it needs to be to tell the interesting tale of Cronus, Nessa, Ben, and all the other fascinating characters. While reading the book each evening, I felt part of an epic adventure that could easily fill a season of a cool science fiction adventure TV series. Each character felt unique. A lot is going on as you switch between following Cronus and Ben in two very different locations. One thing’s sure—you won’t get bored with this novel. It’s pretty awesome!

🥀The book "The Disappeared" by J.D. Adler is a breathtaking thriller that delves into the chilling world of missing persons and discloses a hidden pattern that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. From the very first page, the author catapults us into a web of intrigue, led by the tenacious reporter Cronus Bushkill. His relentless quest for the truth unveils a plot that spans decades, captivating us deeper into a precarious and shady realm.
🥀What makes this book stand apart is the proficient way in which the author integrates a heart-wrenching emotional story with a grand-scale plot. The reader is taken on a roller-coaster ride, continuously doubting loyalties, deciphering hints, and uncovering enigmas. The plot is intricately layered, unveiling startling revelations at every turn, and keeping us guessing and assuming until the very last.
It's such a great a read! The characters jump off the page and I feel like I know them. It's about regular people who have these crazy things happen. Don't worry if you're not a sci-fi person. You'll really like Nessa, Ben, Shirley, etc. and go on this ride with them. The book has songs these characters have written, jokes, and an ending that is just cool!
