Meet Ashley — a coastal Floridian who can’t go for a beach walk without plotting her next story. The ocean? Her muse. Random strangers’ conversations? Probably dialogue in her next book.

By day, she keeps marketing campaigns afloat (and on deadline). By night, she trades spreadsheets for storyboards, typing away like her coffee depends on it.

A proud rescue dog mom, Ashley’s life has taken her from the chaos of New York City to the calm of the South—though “calm” is relative when you’ve got two dogs and a husband who always finds sand in the car.

When she’s not writing, she’s collecting seashells, sipping something iced, and pretending her email inbox doesn’t exist.

Thank you to the indie author and publisher Ashley McConnell for inviting me to be part of the ARC tour and an advance digital copy of ᴄʟɪᴍʙ ᴛʜᴇ ʟᴀᴅᴅᴇʀ. This author actually had me review an arc of her first book a year ago, and didn't like the review I wrote for her then.  But she still invited me to write this review. I was not aware of this when I accepted, as I read and review hundreds of books a year. Nor do I really understand why she wanted me to do this.

I removed this review when I first posted it, at the author's strident request. But after giving it some thought, I've decided to repost the review. I put a great deal of time and work into reviews, and a "free book" is woefully insubstantial compensation for that. It comes out to roughly $.50 per hour. *edit But her fans are coming here in droves to assure me how nice she is! So naturally, it must be my problem right? Because all authors are such nice people! (I'm reading a book right now by Machiavelli, so I know this isn't true.)

Considering this, I've reaffirmed my long held belief that I don't review books for the good of authors, but for that of readers. I don't owe authors anything when I've agreed to review their books, except an honest review.

So here we go. All views are mine.

Gosh he's handsome...and reading nonfiction. Swoon. Loc 3449 ch 41

Three (or more) things I loved:

1. It is really hard to break the fourth wall, in my opinion. Using this technique is so so tricky, I believe it should only be used if it is necessary to deliver a piece of information to the reader that they could otherwise not receive within the formal logic of the story world. Or, if the delivery is really funny, like it is here. Don't you judge me!  loc. 212, ch2

2. I love the realistic, beautiful, sexy sex, especially the first time, between Blythe and James. I love that they talk about pregnancy prevention *before* the initial penetration. This was a really great first time sex scene. It's so refreshing! And sexy!

3. I am so grateful that Wren reads as a realistic child. I often find fictional children to be unbelievable. Children don't act like tiny adults. They are strange, absurd, adorable pseudo-humans. Wren is a wonderfully executed character. I fell in love with her from the beginning, when she nicknames Blythe "Birdie," a variation of Wren's own nickname, "Little Bird." And I mean, Wren's reasoning is impeccable!

Three (or less) things I didn't love:

This section isn't only for criticisms. It's merely for items that I felt something for other than "love" or some interpretation thereof.

1. There's not enough conflict in the first half of the book and it affects the pacing. At 34%, there are no stakes really, or at least very low stakes. Blythe’s got the guy, the promotion, and the bestie, and there's no trouble on the horizon. Unfortunately at the 50% mark, Blythe’s world blows up and she suddenly has stakes, a goal, desire (that isn't sexual). Writers sometimes call this moment the story catalyst or the inciting incident, and it often comes at the beginning of the book, or rather, at about the 15 to 25% mark. What we have here is half the book telling the backstory up to the catalyst, and then the rest of the book telling the main character's response to the catalyst. It's not bad, just a little odd to read a story built this way.

2. Sometimes, she throws in romance tropes like she's ringing Pavlov's bell. I see this with the main character size difference, which comes up with both love interests in the book. That itself may not have been that remarkable, but the wording of these two narrative points is similar enough to notice.

3. This book is a bit optimistic about jobs/careers and wealth. I feel like these are common romance genre tropes. The "everyone has enough money in savings" trope and "the everyone can be wildly successful" trope.

Recommend? Maybe– how much do you like absurd romcoms?

*spoiler free* Ashley wrote a beautiful story not only about love but also a story about hurt, healing, and finding yourself at a point in life that you thought you already knew.

Climb the Ladder follows our female main character, Blythe (with a few male characters pov’s as well) Blythe is a character that is witty and brilliant that I found myself spending so much time relating to and understanding her, heart to heart. And I believe so many others will feel the same way as they read this book. She’s just a woman who spent so much time being right where she thought she needed to be, working her corporate job, living in the city, spending time with her best friend and learning to date again. Just to realize she deserves and needs so much more out of life and love!

The town of Wippowa will have you falling in love with its charm (and handsome, grumpy coffee shop owners). Because while this is a beautiful story of healing and growth, it’s also an incredible, heart grabbing testament to love. <3 The romance in this book is so real and lovely, that had me giggling, kicking my feet, and texting about all the time!

I cannot wait for you all to read this book. It’s so clear that Ashley’s heart and soul have been poured into her first, and for sure not her last, romance novel. Enjoy the beauty in finding yourself, enjoy the stunning town of Wippowa, enjoy Blythe finding love and a life she so clearly deserves in every possible way. Cheers to Ashley McConnell and Climb the Ladder!

My first read of #IndieBookSummer and it couldn’t have been a more perfect kickoff! Climb the Ladder by Ashley McConnell is a sweet, fast-paced summer romance that had me smiling from start to finish.

It’s got everything you want in a fun, feel-good read - sunny vibes, charming characters, flirty banter, and just enough emotional depth to keep you hooked. The romance is light, breezy, and full of heart, making it the perfect poolside or weekend read.

Ashley McConnell writes with such warmth and ease, it felt like sinking into a comfort read with a fresh twist. If you're looking for something cute, quick, and romantic to launch your summer reading stack, this one's a great pick!

first of i want to thank to the author for letting me read ‘climb the ladder’ arc !!

my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

i absolutely enjoyed this so much. the writing style, the lovable characters (minus james and miles of course lol), the friendships, the setting, everything.

this story follows blythe struggling with her life between work and relationships until she goes to wippowa and meets claire and charlie. blythe is a bookstagramer and dreams of owning her own bookshop one day and there so happens to be an empty one for sale next to charlie’s coffee shop 😉 also chapter 28 tho 👀

keeping spoiler free but you should definitely read this especially if you enjoy dual pov, grumpy x sunshine, and a single father this is for you! 🩵🐚🐬

Tropes:
Grumpy sunshine
Single father
Spice 1.5/5

One word: Birdie

“ we’re both broken, but between the two of us, we make up a whole person”

Blythe has always strived for more when it came to her job and life. She put everything on hold in order to put her job first and get the promotion she deserved. Things take a turn for the worst (so she believes) but turns out to be the push she’s needed. She pacs up her life and sets on a trip that puts herself first. Charlie has only ever put Wren first and has pushed everyone away, only to find himself giving away free coffee to the one women who calls him out. He finds himself fascinated watching her find herself and embracing Wren as if she’s known her all her life. Will Blythe be the one to thaw his icy heart??

I want to thank Ashley for selecting me to be an ARC reader. I enjoyed her writing style and couldn’t put the book down! I can’t wait to read more of her books.

Thank you Ashley McConnell for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. This book will be published on 9/5/23.

What sets this book apart from your usual romance tropes is that there are 2 male romance partners. Normally when the female MC finds her man they end up together, but not in this book. And I liked that because it made it more realistic.

Grumpy guy gave me Luke Danes vibes from Gilmore Girls and I love me some Luke Danes! His soft spot for Blythe is adorable and shows the crack in his grumpy facade. She can see right through him and they push each other in all the right ways.

I really liked the multiple tropes and found myself relating to Blythe (MC) and jealous of her courage to go after a new story for herself.

I highly recommend this book if you like HEA, grumpy shop owner, finding new beginnings, and of course Gilmore Girls.

I have put off writing this review because I wanted to find words to do this book justice.

Climb the Ladder is an amazing story with such an important message of healing, perseverance, following your dreams and your heart and trusting yourself.

The dual point of view between Blythe, James and Charlie adds so much depth to the story and allows us to become closer to each character and feel like we've known them forever.

Ashley has such a way with words that makes you feel like her characters are people you actually know in real life. The story draws you in from the first page and you can actually feel the emotions of each character radiating off the pages.

If you enjoy summer romances with some angst, spice, and healing, this book is for you.

Bravo, Ashley. This one is phenomenal.

I finished this in one sitting. I connected with the main female character, Blythe, right from the start.

This books tells an amazing story of a woman living her life for her career in the city and everything comes crashing at once regarding her career and love life.

Blythe decides with help from friends to travel and take time for herself, where she finds a community along with the grumpy, single Dad coffee/book shop owner.

I fell in love with the story and it was amazing seeing the character growth!

I’m so honored to be given the chance of reading this as an ARC reader. Where do I start? The story was captivating from the beginning, Blythe is one of those characters you can relate to from beginning to the end.

While struggling while some adult life problems she’s decided to take a chance on something she never imagined she could do. Her character development was beautiful and inspiring, she’s that character you want to be. She’s brave and focused and have the most beautiful soul.

I can’t even express in words how beautiful this story was, everyone should read this at least once and maybe take a chance on something different in your own life.

I hope this books inspires others just the way it inspired me, Blythe gave me strength and clarity on how to move on with my life and make all my dreams come true.

Thank you Ashley for this masterpiece 🖤

Thank you to the author for giving me a chance to read this in exchange for an honest review!

This book started strong & I was enjoying myself… however, the further I read, the more glaring issues it had. I typically rate books solely based on vibe - how they make me feel & if I had fun. Rarely do I rate based on writing or structure, unless it takes me out of the story.

There are numerous instances where the timeline was off. It would mention it had been two weeks since an event, but then in the next sentence, reference that event happening yesterday. The pacing was off as well. I think too much of the book was spent on Blythe’s life in Seattle. I would’ve liked more pages of her in Wippowa.

This had so much potential & I’m so sad I ultimately didn’t enjoy it because of structural & writing issues.

How to give this book the review it deserves? I'm not sure how I can put it into words.

The main character development and storyline are chef's kiss! You don't get terribly far into the story before you start to wonder when the other shoe will drop which others may struggle with while reading, finding it predictable. However, Ashley's writing had me there for all of it. I had to see how Blythe would develop throughout the story.

This novel will have you feeling all sorts of emotions: anger, sad, love, and happy.

If you are wanting that next read that you'll have a hard time putting down until you've finished, Climb the Ladder is for you.

What an amazing story! Blythe thought she was in the right place with her job, life and just seemed stable but she did not realize what she was missing out on. Through this story getting to see Blythe truly find herself and grow to the person she was just was just hiding. Getting to read James and Charlie point of views were also a great insight. In the beginning I had hope for James because he was a book lover too but I just felt like something was going to happen and he was not going to be the one. We even got to Charlie grow and them grow as a family.

This is such an incredible book. You can literally feel the emotions that main character (and all around bad ass woman), Blythe, is experiencing.

It starts off strong with a whirlwind romance and many moments of joy. However, that’s not where the story ends.

When her whole life gets turned upside down, she moves to small Wippowa and gets a chance to start over and chase her dreams! Backed by many strong women, amazing friendships, and so many bookish references.

I highly recommend this book. Thank you, Ashley for the ARC 🫶🏻

I got so excited when I learned this was going to be a “beach romance” novel! Anything beach themed, I love.
I love how this story took place in Seattle and then moved to the small beach town. The flow of this book was nothing like anything I have read before. I love all the characters (well except 2… - iykyk) and their personalities. This book offered such a great story that kept me tied in. I can’t wait for more books my Ashley! Honestly, I would love to see a 2nd book, maybe 👀

My brain during the first part of this story was seriously 🚩 🚩🤦🏼‍♀️🚩🚩 and could not believe this character was about to be her main love interest. Thank God Bee finally woke up. That was a stressful 35%.
Then enter a mid life crisis for Bee and the whole dynamic changes and I am literally obsessed.
Blythe lived out my dream and I am so happy for her.

The best summer story:
-grumpy/sunshine
-midlife changes
-single dad
-trauma bonding
-small town
-sea town

Thank you to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review! I loved this book! I wish we had more of the second half vs. first half bc I loved Blythe and Charlie. I love seeing Blythe’s character growth and how she changed and found herself and passion. Also, same for Charlie. Blythe thawed his icy heart. This was such a feel good book with the small town vibe. It’s easily a new fav!

This is a breath of fresh air to your typical beach romance. It is jam packed full of real issues such as work life balance, trust issues, overcoming abandonment, finding yourself, healing and becoming whole. Blythe is such a relatable character who actually does what so many of us dream of- gives up restless stability to go after the dream.

I’m not typically a romance reader, but I absolutely adored this book. Read it in a weekend and the whole time I kept picturing it as a Netflix series. Really well-done, relatable characters. Great flow. It has a Gilmore Girls / Virgin River vibe with some less traumatic Nicholas Sparks thrown in. Can’t wait for the next book to come out!

5 Stars!! I loved this!!! A Romance novel from one of my favorite Thriller authors? No reason to doubt! I definitely found myself staying up way too late to read this! (This is becoming a habit with Ashley's books!)
Choosing to climb the corporate ladder has Blythe Whitlock making the sacrifices needed to get ahead. When a promotion and a dream of a guy come into her life, she is really hitting her stride. When things don't exactly go the way she thought they would, Blythe heads to a small beach town in Georgia to re-think her next steps.
And there in that town, is where I fell in love with everything about this book! The characters are so well written, real and lovable, especially Wren! There's a best friend we could all only hope for, locals that you'll want to know in real life and two guys that I need you to decide for yourself how you feel about them. There is definitely grumpy vs sunshine and tenderness that'll melt your heart.
A story of growth, perseverance, hurt and healing and being open to the life journey's that may come your way.
And you know how some books make you start planning vacations on Nantucket, this will have you looking up rentals in the fictional town of Wippowa Island, Georgia! And Ashley, Chapter 28 will remain my favorite of all time...I really did laugh out loud!
Congratulations Ashley!! Thank you once again for entrusting me with an arc of this special book! You've done it once again!!!

I was given this book as an ARC review in exchange for my honest review. My very first so I’m super pumped!

From the start of this book I felt seen. Blythe and myself have so much in common, especially are slow realization that the corporate America world sucks! I’m lucky to have a job much better than hers that doesn’t make my life miserable, but I would love to uproot and move somewhere to start fresh.

Ashley’s writing is very easy to follow along. I loved the little whims here and there that I either caught on to and wondered what was going to happen, or I missed and she brought it back around later to make me realize. Like with stupid James, I was as blind as Blythe by his charm but later on when Blythe was thinking things over to herself and realized the red flags she missed, so did I.

This story takes you through Blythe’s worst moments yet she is able to come out on the other side and find herself and what she really wants in life. She’s never left her home to explore the world and what it has to offer. It is a wonderful journey about taking risks to find your ultimate happiness.

I enjoyed how well this story flowed and felt like so much time had happened yet it wasn’t rushed. If you want a super cute beachy, relaxing(ish), because I did almost cry a couple times, rom com type feel then this book is for you! It was the perfect end of summer time read and definitely one I will go back to when I need some good feels in my day.

ARC review- I wholeheartedly LOVED this book, it was a true romance book that dove deep into the life of the main character, Blythe. You get to really know her and her experiences for about half the book, then her life takes turn and you get to see her develop and find herself in the most beautiful way. It is about her taking chances, healing, putting herself first and discovering her true self. So many aspects of Blythe are relatable, and I think she will really resonate with readers in all stages of life.

Then there is Charlie- he gives off hotter/younger Luke from Gilmore Girls vibes- and I am here for it! His character is equally as deep and broken as Blythe, and their stories just truly complement each-other. I love that they get to know each other on a deeper level before jumping into anything, and really being able see them both through their perspective healing journeys.

This book does have moments of spice in the first 1/2, but not the second. So if your looking for a *spicy* romance this wouldn’t be the ghost pepper if you know that I mean- but if your looking for a relatable romance with great characters and story line, this is totally it!

Ashley did wonderful with this, and I am so honored I was able to review it before it’s out! Add it to your TBR for September 5th!

Climb the Ladder is the perfect story of heartbreak, love and healing. Beyond that it’s the story of finding your self worth. We see our main character Blythe go through the struggles of corporate America and dedicating herself too much to people and things that just take from her. We see a main character who for so long devoted herself to toxic cycles in the hopes of finding something good. Only when her world gets turned upside down does she change.

This book was such a breath of fresh air. We have a relatable main character just trying to find her place in the world while healing. We see the unexpected turmoils of life in your late twenties. This book goes even beyond that and explores how you can find healing and love in the most unlikeliest of places and people.

This story was absolutely beautiful and had me hooked from page one. It will make you laugh, cry, and smile throughout the entire novel. Sometimes all three at once. This is the perfect book if you are looking for something super easy to read and will hold your attention throughout the entirety. This is the book you sit on your front porch with or by the pool with when you want a light summer read. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for this one as soon as it hits the shelves!

I absolutely loved this! This book was super cute!
Not only was it about love, it was about Blythe finding herself and putting herself first. After dealing with the struggles of her current job, dating, and life in general, Blythe decides to take the advice of her friends and pack up her things for a much needed vacation. However, after losing her promotion, quitting her job, and breaking things off with her current boyfriend- she finds herself needing more than just a week away from Seattle. After just a few hours in Wippowa, Georgia, Blythe begins to think that this little town would be perfect for her.

I loved the characters so much! Blythe was so relatable. I loved that she was a bookstagrammer and that her personality was so relatable. Charlie comes off as super withdrawn and grumpy, but at the first mention of him I knew I would be rooting for Blythe to break through the walls he had put up! Seeing him be a dad to Wren was ADORABLE. I loved loved loved Wren herself- she’s so cute and smart! I loved the nickname little bird for her and thought it was the cutest that she nicknamed Blythe Birdie 🥹 everything was just perfect! It was like a breath of fresh air reading this and I’m so happy I was able to!

Ashley has done it again! This is my first romance novel, and she has somehow opened up my cold, thriller heart to something so warm and “gushy.” 😂

The characters within these pages aren’t just characters; they’re like friends that you’ve known for years. I found myself rooting for Blythe while celebrating her success and empathizing with her challenges. Blythe, Rose, and Charlie, to name a few, are a testament to Ashley’s storytelling ability that she can make fictional people feel so real and relatable.

It’s impossible to not lose yourself in this story. From the charming scenery of Wippowa to the steamy romance between the lovers, her descriptions conjure up vivid imagery. It’s so vivid that I could practically feel all the emotion leaping off the pages.

This book is for anyone who loves a beachy romance. It’s a touching and passionate journey of love and self-discovery that is sure to leave you with a smile.

Thank you Ashley McConnell for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This book is everything you could ever want in a romance and more. It was so hard to put down! Was it a little predictable? Yes BUT it was written so well and sucks you in so fast you just keep reading.
The characters are so easy to relate to and very lovable (well aside from a few… you know who you are 👀 ).

I love dual perspectives - nothing beats experiencing things from multiple views and then seeing it come together at the end. It really added to this story because you are witnessing first hand the journey both people are going through simultaneously which you rarely get. You always get one side and it can be hard to imagine the other person’s journey.

Thank you Ashley for writing this book. I wish it never had to end and we could experience their entire life!

I’ve been trying to come up with the words to describe this book and honestly everything I think of just falls short. This book was absolute perfection and I wish Wippowa was somewhere I could go to visit and never leave. Ashley’s writing and character development are beautiful and it truly feels like you have known these characters your entire life.
If you love books that have
Grumpy Sunshine
Finding yourself
Beach Vibes
Plus Luke Danes vibes with a splash of Sweet Magnolia’s (and some spice 😉), then this is the book for you! I will definitely be on a book hangover after reading this masterpiece! (I may be praying Ashley turns this book into a series because I definitely need more of everyone in this book)

I had the privilege to beta read this for Ashley, and it is PERFECTION. You get to fall in love with Blythe from the very beginning, she is hands down one of my favorite FMC’s. She is strong, resilient, driven. We love. You get to fall in love with small coastal town, Wippowa, and all of its residents. I could not have asked for anything more (besides MORE ;) i wasn’t ready to leave wippowa and Blythe and her love for life and the amazing family she gained), I can’t wait for this to be released for you all.

Thank you Ashley for trusting your book baby with me

This is one of my favorite books that I've read this year! It's a love story, but it's so much more than that!

This story is about leaving things that are holding you back from loving life and being able to create a life you do love. It's about persevering and being courageous even when you think there's absolutely no way that things are going to work out.
The characters are lovable and relatable. I definitely need a Claire and Rose in my life!

If you like Grumpy x Sunshine, found family, beach settings, Luke Danes Vibes, then this book is worth the read!
