John Griffith Chaney, better known as Jack London, was an American novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.

London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of animal rights, workers’ rights and socialism. London wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam.

His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen".

Still winter mood on. And strangely enough, all the books I am choosing this year are set in the 19th century and are about Alaska adventures.

I know Jack London's books are considered one of the best adventure books, especially for young adults, but for me those books are the best leadership books, better than any non-fiction.

This is a setting book, and it's what Jack writes best. The Son of the Wolf is a group of short stories illustrating life on the Klondike in the late 1800s. He uses tales of death, madness, survival, revenge, lust and love to give the reader a thrilling glimpse into the lives of his characters. The stories flow from one to another, with references to one event appearing in later tales. Jack uses a few prominent characters to tie the whole together and give the reader an anchor. Throughout the book, however, the main character is the wilderness itself. He gives the land personality, treacherous and vindictive, or giving and resplendent with beauty. If you want something you can read a little here, a little there, without getting lost, this is that book.

"The Wisdom of the Trail"
At times their eyes took on the patient stoicism of dumb suffering;

Had there been a softness and appeal to mercy in the eyes, a tremble to the voice, a taking advantage of sex, he would have stiffened to steel; instead her clear-searching eyes and clear-ringing voice, her utter frankness and tacit assumption of equality, had robbed him of his reason. He felt, then, that this was a new breed of woman; and ere they had been trail mates for many days he knew why the sons of such women mastered the land and the sea, and why the sons of his own womankind could not prevail against them.

"The Wife of a King"
It was a unique situation, the undertaking of these three men with the woman.

The most pathetic part, perhaps, was the businesslike way in which they went about it.

They had indulged in sharp repartee and she had defended herself brilliantly; and then, yielding to the intoxication of the moment, and of her own power, she had bullied, and mastered, and wheedled, and patronized them with most astonishing success. And instinctively, involuntarily, they had bowed, not to her beauty, her wisdom, her wit, but to that indefinable something in woman to which man yields yet cannot name.

"An Odyssey of the North"
It put the chill to my soul, sitting there in the White Silence, alone with death and this woman who laughed.

Note: This isn't the edition I read. I read a bind up of a bunch of Jack London's stories with The Son of the Wolf as its cover title, but it didn't have an ISBN numbers and I couldn't find it here on Goodreads.

This is a collection of short stories, but with the same setting and reappearing characters. A soap opera set in the harsh, unforgiving north of America. Jack London has a way of never sugar coating his characters. He lays them bare for the reader - flaws, misgivings, and all. Some characters I really adored, others I didn't care much for. Same with the stories themselves, but I mostly did enjoy them.

Very good collection of early London stories set in the Arctic of humankind and its battles against nature and each other. Most memorable stories were the ones about the two men trapped together all winter in a cabin and the last one about a man who pursues someone who abducts his wife whom he purchased.

I’ve rated each short story below individually. The scores average out to about 3.3 stars but I’m rating the overall collection as a 2 because I felt the majority of the time I was not really enjoying what I was reading. The only two stories worth reading are the first and last in the collection - White Silence and The Wife of a King.

- White Silence (4.5 stars): Bleak. Moody. Dark. Real.

- The Son of the Wolf (1.5 stars): Pretty much crap. Sexist, racist, toxic masculinity, white savior. Putting all that aside, the story was still pulpy junk.

- The Men of Forty Mile (3.25 stars): A slyly clever solution is proposed to avoid an impending problem where simply the suggestion of the threat may be enough to avert the problem. I would’ve liked to see how the story would’ve evolved based purely on that premise but the problem is resolved by a fortuitous coincidence. It had the potential to be good but was let down by an ending that took the easy way out.

- In a Far Country (3.75 stars): Reminded me a bit of the movie The Hateful 8.

- To the Man on Trail (3.75 stars): Interesting story that plays into a different kind of ethics in the north when there wasn’t much ability to enforce the law and right and wrong was more communally determined.

- The Priestly Prerogative (2 stars): It was a little hard for me to follow the dialogue. And then I was confused by the ending. It initially seemed that the priest was going along with the plan to allow Grace to escape her unhappy marriage to be with Clyde by hiding her in Clyde’s house. But later when the priest is speaking with Malamute Kid, he states “I knew, and made her go back” implying he made her go back to her husband. So I don’t know how the story actually ended.

- The Wisdom of the Trail (3.75 stars): It has a certain vibe/aesthetic. Kinda seems unrealistic that a guy can just kill two others over a few cups of stolen flour and also that they would willingly accept death as a punishment. There is also a conflicting standard of equality displayed, that I’ve noticed in a few of Jack London’s short stories. He quite clearly seems to assert that women should be seen and treated as equal to men (because they are) which seems progressive for the time. However he also consistently portrays indigenous peoples as lesser than white men. I am certainly issuing a critique based on today’s societal standards and I recognize the sentiments towards indigenous people portrayed in the book are a reflection of his time. However, his stance toward equality for women seems so modern that one wishes it also extended to the natives.

- The Wife of a King (4 stars): Very good revenge story, especially in its subversion. A life dedicated to revenge is rarely worth it. At some point it becomes better to let hate melt away and find peace to be able to move on with your life.

📖"Fiul lupului", Jack London - 217 pagini📖

corsa all'oro nelle vaste terre del Grande Nord americano.

I've been meaning to read a biography about Jack London. And then I remembered that it's probably been over twenty years since I read anything by him. I remember reading the universally required "To Build a Fire" in high school, and then, on my own, reading The Call of the Wild and White Fang.
So I grabbed this collection of short stories in order to get started and they are fabulous.
Trigger warnings about animal cruelty and what extreme elements can do to the human body.
I didn't find him to be racist, in fact many of his non-white characters are fully developed and are more often the hero of the story vs the "white man", but these were written around 1900, so keep that in mind while reading.
Also, I found one story to be pretty dismissive about women. Then, the next TWO featured extremely strong female characters that were just awesome. I read somewhere this might be because London's second wife was quite awesome. There is a balance here I don't normally run into with classics.
Now onto more his "socialist" writings.

I was prepared to like this a little less than some of his other collections, given that it was his first outing, but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it thoroughly. There were spots where the youthful stylist would be buffed away for the better in later writings, but theses spots were fewer than expected. I also enjoyed the fact that characters made multiple appearances in different stories, thus making it more of a short story cycle, rather than a mere collection.

The eponymous short story in particular made an impression, in its direct statements of how the effects brought about by the white man's coming to the territory upon the natives were inevitable regardless of whether the occasional man recognizes the injustice of it all. It is not offered as a moral justification of 'manifest destiny' or any such nonsense, but simply a truthful recognition of what will always happen when a people with power bump up against a different people with less power, as has happened repeatedly throughout the history of our species (and for that matter, the pre-history of our genus).

This collection of short stories was, I think, London’s first published book. The stories mainly focus on various inhabitants of Alaska, and mainly around one village, during the Yukon Gold Rush. They are, overall, very good stories, and certainly show the promise that the young author displayed. Published in 1900, he was only a short time away from when 1903’s The Call of the Wild gave him international recognition and a big financial leg up.
