A Montana serial killer is targeting the law enforcement—until the hunted becomes the hunter in this thriller by the #1 New York Times bestselling author.
Sheriff Dan Grayson lies near death after a shooting, and the police department of Grizzly Falls, Montana, is in shock. Detective Selena Alvarez, torn between a new relationship and her loyalty to Grayson, works with Detective Regan Pescoli to whittle down the list of suspects. The deeper they go, the more personal and dangerous the case becomes. Then a prominent judge's body is found and the killer sends a sinister warning to the "Who's Next?" Pescoli isn't waiting to find out. Headstrong and eager for justice, she'll track the scant clues on her own if she has to. But her search leads her straight to a monster who has had her in his sights all along. And when hunter meets prey, both must be willing to kill—and ready to die.
Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.
Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.
With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.
This is book 5 in the "to die" series. This series is one of my favorites and there is only one more to go! If Lisa Jackson does not write another Selena Alvarez/Regan Pescoli book, I will be very sad.
Ready to Die by Lisa Jackson is a 2013 Kensington publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I heard Lisa Jackson was coming out with a new novel soon, I realized I had not read any of her books in quite some time. Scrolling through my TBR list I discovered I had added this book to my shelves under ‘Netgalley’ but I had never reviewed it. Sure enough, I found it on my Kindle, stored in the cloud, never read or reviewed. Geez. Better late than never? I hope so, since I usually enjoy Lisa’s work and hate that so much time has passed since I read one of her books.
This book in the fifth in this series, and starts off with a huge emotional shock, which has Alvarez and Pescoli under pressure and very much on edge. Their beloved sheriff, Dan Grayson, is now lying in a coma and the ladies are determined to take down the person who shot him.
On a personal level, Pescoli is dealing with two petulant kids, a marriage proposal, and a new boss who has made it clear he doesn’t like her.
Can the women discover who shot Dan and if the disappearance of a prominent judge has ties to this case?
This story is one part police procedural, and one part family drama. The crime is very well plotted and kept me guessing all the way to the very end where a stunning twist left me floored. The only part I hated about the investigation was that Dan was the victim.
The personal dramas and side stories were sort of puzzling to me. Jeremy needed to be taken down a notch, even though he did earn a little bit of respect from me by the end of the book.
The other side story involving Dan’s brother and former sister-in-law was pretty sudsy and after it got my blood boiling a little, this sub-plot simply faded away and we got a one sentence update on the situation in the epilogue that was very disappointing. I hope this storyline is continued in the next book and that there is more of upbeat feeling to it as well. But, as far as I’m concerned that whole setup didn’t do one thing for the investigation into Dan’s shooting, nor did it address the suspicious death of Dan’s brother several years ago, another thread that got left flapping in the wind, but there is a hint that storyline is not yet closed. Still, I was left with the feeling I wasted all that emotion on nothing and wondered why it was even in this book. I think the story would have flowed a lot more evenly if the focus had stayed on the crime and on the ladies doing the leg work.
The crime novel sections, the investigation, and the police work is the bread and butter in this book and all the other sub-plots were more or less filler, except for the inside look into Pescoli’s life and the pressures she was under on all fronts. I like Alvarez and Pescoli being paired together as partners and believe they work well together. So, overall, this book is a solid thriller and crime novel, and for the most part was an enjoyable read. 3 stars
Pescoli continued to be annoying and in regards to the plot it was easy to figure out the "bad guy". You just needed to wade through a lot of filler to get there. Dan's family should have been more developed in prior books versus while he laid in a coma in the hospital. And I really didn't need a lot of page time with his sister in law. The whole she had a relationship with 3 of the 4 brothers was icky at best. It all seemed like a distraction from the plot as if there wasn't much to write about the mystery part of the plot.
Bilenler bilir. Okuduğunuz an aklınıza gelen her şey doğru çıkıyor. Belki diğer kitaplarda da içinize doğan şeyler bu kitapta onaylanıyor. Ne demek istediğimi anlatamam çok büyük spoiler olur. Ben bu seriyi seviyorum. Mutlaka sonuna kadar okuyacağım.
Good read and not an easy case to solve! Had me guessing who the serial was until over 3 quarters through the book - lots of red herrings tossed in the way.
Personal issues abound for Regan Pescoli, but finally she starts to take charge of her personal life. Alvarez seems to be opening up more and settling into her life which is now filling up with new people.
A main character is targetted at the first, which throws the gang into a tail spin. This book picks up where "Afraid to Die" left off which was just after the U.S. Thanksgiving and leading up to Christmas - hmm, more snow and seasonal songs ;)
I like the 2 main characters and the chemistry that they have, there is a puzzler though, they've been partners for a couple of years, yet they still hold back at times from one another both about the cases they are involved in and their personal lives.
2 thumbs up and 4 stars (can't give 5 because of Pescoli's annoying kids although they start to mature a bit towards the end of this book).
This is book 5 of Lisa Jackson's 'to die' series. Although not as good as the first 2 in the series it is still a great mystery. I look forward to reading book 6 Deserves to Die next month and finishing out the series.
In this book our serial killer is targeting people closer to home for Alvarez and Pescoli, and they need to stop the culprit before he gets even closer. Pescoli has a some surprises in store for her, and some decisions to make as well.
This is a another great mystery within a mystery plot for Jackson filled with excitement, action and great imagery. The plot to the story was not a favorite but it was still pretty good imo. I found this one to be a little predictable and I have never had that happen before with a Jackson book. But overall it was a great read.
I just love Alvarez and Pescoli so much. They are probably my 2 favorite female protagonists in mystery books. They are 2 of the most flawed characters out of all that I have come across and I love that. I love Pescoli's image and her 'not gonna take this' attitude. It gets her through life. And then Alvarez keeps her leveled headed when she needs to be. They are a great team! As far as Pescoli's kids, they drive me insane and need to cut her a break and I hope I see them mature a bit more in the story, but then again it kind adds to Pescoli's struggles which contributes to her being such a likable character.
I will always recommend Lisa Jackson to people who love mystery, because I feel like Jackson writes it so well. Always sure to leave her readers guessing and always giving readers plenty to think about.
Highly enjoyable mystery - but it is book 5 of the Montana ready to die series so you'll want to read the previous 4 to understand the relationships although Jackson does a good job giving back story so if you're new, you can figure things out fairly easily.
In a nutshell - a judge has been assassinated, the sheriff has been critically injured and just weeks after the last homicidal maniac terrorized Grizzly Falls - there's another. The slimy undersherif has moved into the Sheriff Grayson's office and is taking over. He has never liked Pescolli and has hired her son who he likes even less to basically be his go-fer boy. Pescolli's life is a mess - she witnesses Grayson's shooting just as she was going to talk to him about some sensitive information, plus there's her bratty kids and the ever sexy Santana. Alverez is in love with O'Keefe and reconnecting with the son she gave up for adoption. That's a lot on the plates of our two detectives.
Who is the killer? You'll just have to read and find out.
I grabbed a book in this series a while back, I liked it so much, I decided to read the entire series. Unfortunately, I am reading the series totally out of order; grabbing a book from the series when I visit the library. Fortunately, it doesn’t matter, each book can easily be read and understood as a stand alone book!
In this book detectives Regan Pescoli and Selena Alverez are not only looking for the sniper who brought down the Sherriff, but a missing judge without realizing they are on the serial killer’s list.
Sherriff Grayson is in intensive care with two bullet wounds; although he has made it through surgery, he has yet to regain consciousness. When the judge is found shot to death a few days later the partners realize they are tracking a psychopathic serial killer, again!
While Pescoli and Alverez start whittling down the suspect list, something niggles at the back of their minds; something that could blow this case wide open! When the information finally clicks in each of them, the partners are not together and Pescoli heads alone with Alverez close (but not close enough) behind, they are both willing to do what they must to avenge the Sherriff they both love.
Pescoli and the mad man will face off both willing to die!
I have read hundreds of books in tons of different genres. One of my favorites is the mystery/suspense group. But only if a few conditions are met:
1. The hero/heroine MUST be flawed. I detest reading about some perfect person who lives in the perfect house with a perfect dog, the 2.5 perfect children, the perfect spouse who drives the perfect car with the perfect life. I want someone who has been down in the trenches, who has had bad stuff happen to them and they have dusted themselves back off, sworn to never make that same mistake again, only to make that same mistake again! I guess I could have said just a regular person. But what fun would that have been? C. I would really like it if I couldn't pick out the killer. If I can pick out the villain in the first couple chapters, I get very angry and refuse to read the book for 10-15 minutes while it's in time out and had time to think about what it's done. I'll probably finish the book ... but I will probably not read from that author again anytime soon. 4. The word of the day is: twistyturney. There have to be lots of twistyturneys in the book. Mandatory. OR ELSE (dun dun DUUUUN) <-- Imagine scary music.
Okay, if all of those conditions are met, then that makes a happy reader (me). So. The question is whether Lisa Jackson met those criteria and the answer is ABSOLUTELY!
It has been too long since I have picked up a Jackson book and I really regret that now. I feel like I have missed out on a great series and now after the mountain of books that I have to read is a bit smaller, I'm going to pick up the rest of the To Die series.
While there are quite a few characters, I felt like I knew where all of them were coming from. It was a bit much to keep up with at first but I quickly caught on. And maybe that would have been a non-issue if I had read the rest of the series.
I really felt like this could be a standalone book. I didn't feel anything was lacking in the story ... there wasn't a back story that I felt like I was missing out on or anything, so that's a gigantic thumbs up.
All in all, a great book. Definitely one I'll pick up again and of course an author that I'll stop neglecting!!
This was my least favorite book in Lisa Jackson "Ready to..." series. I've liked the characters, Alvarez and Pescoli in the past books, but didn't care for the story line and I couldn't connect with the new characters introduced, Hattie and Sheriff Grayson's family. I also had a hard time following the suspects in the case, I kept forgetting who they were. I wanted to put the book down, but stuck with it because I was acquainted with the characters from the first four books.
I have enjoyed this series in the past but this was not one of my favorites. I figured out most of the plot twists before they were revealed. Several plot lines were just left hanging and not really in a good way. Lisa Jackson has been one of my favorite female authors, but I have been a little disappointed in her last few novels. To me this book was just ho-hum.
More like 1.5 stars and basically a waste of time. The plot about a new serial killer appearing few days after a previous has been caught is like a Frankenstein's creature stitched together from bits and pieces that had been used before, so you again get a villain with obligatory military training who just has to get naked before he does his push-ups.
The characters too have gone beyond ridiculous, especially in parent-children relations. Finally, the prose feels tired, and words like "haphazardly" appear twice in the same sentence, descriptions of persons are reduced to "relentless angel of death", and online accounts are "hidden on different computer". In 2013. Right?
Regan Pescoli and her partner Selena Alvarez are detectives in Grizzly Falls Montana. When Police Chief Grayson is shot they are determined to track down the person responsible. But the Chief is not the only victim and the killer has his sights set on the detectives as well. Lisa Jackson has several more books featuring Regan and Selena and I am pleased to find at least one more on my bookshelves. So many good books so little time. What a problem to have.
This is the 5th series of Lisa Jackson's to Die Series that I have read and by far my least favorite. The reasoning of giving it 4 stars was the last 3 chapters were EXCELLENT!!!
3.5 stars rounded to 4. I'm getting kind of tired of the series. This one had a decent twist at the end though. I have to read the next one, of course, to see what happens next, lol
Omg I did not expect it to end like that. Once again I was completely thrown off from who the murderer was. Mind blown!!!! Lisa Jackson is great at throwing you off the murderer in her writing, but she is a queen with this one, give her a 👑 👸. Full of action, unpredictable, and very well written. The detectives in this one are thrown of from the murderer as well. Trying to find who would want to shoot and kill a judge and a sheriff. They go with the obvious thought it's someone they both sent to jail. The path to the murderer is a long and winding one in this book. If you love Mysteries, this book is for you. Go read it.
Well, she's done it again. A book you don't want to put down to walk the dog, to eat a meal, or to go to bed. Pescoli and Alvarez are smart, determined and dedicated women who make the sheriff's department click. Ready to Die has more twists and turns than the Montana roads they travel. And even though the temps here are in the 90s I shivered from the icy blasts of Mountain weather and the chilling scenes in the book. Don't miss it.
I give this book a 2.75 rating. It is hard to explain why, but all the time spent on the romantic interests, families, etc of the main characters got on my nerves. The soap opera format took a lot more space than the murder. I am guessing that if I had read some of the earlier books in this series first, I might have a different opinion. I just purchased an earlier book so will keep an open mind and may come back and rerate this one later.
Lisa Jackson is one of my favorite writers! This series has been great from the beginning! Lisa Jackson has managed to make Regan Pescoli and SelenaAlvarez into real people!
This is book five in the series and you definitely want to read these books from the beginning to get the back stories of everyone! A lot happened in this book with the people in Grizzly Point. This was a really good book that deserved more than 5 stars!
Pescoli and her bratty kids were better in this book, but I am not sure why I keep listening to this series. It is barely 3 stars for me. This series has so many good reviews that I keep expecting it to get better, but except for Pescoli's annoying teenagers, it hasn't really gotten better. Even the romance isn't likeable,
Likes: * Grayson brothers ~ Zed (grumpy), Sheriff Dan (steady & good guy), Cabe (wild & hot-headed) & deceased Bart (weaker or sweet)
Dislikes: * Sooo many things that annoyed me * Only one plausible killer
