“I told you that I cannot die,” I said, “but that is not exactly true. There is one way that an Eternal can be killed. Only one! It is nearly impossible, but it can be done. I have seen it with my own eyes. And I believe that you, Lukas Jaeger, may be the one to do it for me.” In this, the third installment of the Oldest Living Vampire’s confessions, secret schemes are revealed at last, while the vampire Gon relates to us his first attempt at living among mortals... and his crushing defeat by the beautiful and brutal vampire Zenzele, the woman who will become his soulmate. An indie bestseller since its debut in 2010, The Oldest Living Vampire Saga has captivated readers with its unique take on the vampire mythos, its lush portrayal of the prehistoric world, and its shocking violence and sensuality.
Born in Southern Illinois, Joseph was raised in a very liberal home environment and was exposed at an early age to the classic underground comic book scene of the sixties and seventies, as well as European graphic novels by artists like Moebius, Enki Bilal and Milo Manara. At age 9, he was reading Tolkien and Stephen King. He wrote his first novella at age 10. If you want to read the same old formulaic pop lit, don't bother with Joseph's fiction. The novels of Joseph Duncan are challenging, subversive and fantastical, merging genres and pushing the boundaries of propriety and good taste. If you have an aversion to dark subject matter, gratuitous sex and extreme violence, stay far away from Joseph's books. Far. Far. Away!

Wowza!!!Loved this book and a fantastic new vampire series! if you're looking for something different in a vampire story! Cannot wait till the next installment!!
The third instalment of this six book series. It begins, where book 2 finished with Gon holding a human captive.
The then part of this story also continues where the previous story ended. As the title suggests in this book we learn about a female vampire who Gon meets and falls in love with, in the 'then' timeline.
This book examines the unending questions of loyalty and family and just how far do you go and what are you prepared to sacrifice for the ones you love and the ones most important to you. It also continues to show how the human race is every bit as selfish, greedy, vicious, and in some cases vile as supernatural blood drinkers. The most troubling realisation of this story though is in the now timeline and just how desperate Gon is to end his existence and the lengths he is prepared to go to and what evil he is prepared to unleash on the world to achieve that goal.
I enjoyed this story, especially the introduction of the new characters and exploration into the female vampires life story but for some reason, I still didn't enjoy it quite as much as the previous two. I am unsure why that is as it had all the ingredients to hit the mark as the previous ones did but for me, this one fell a little bit short and whilst I undoubtedly did enjoy it and it was unquestionably a good strong story, so the only thing I can put that down to is the fact it was more of the same. It was the same format and for the most part the same historical struggles in the 'then' timeline and the same situations in the 'now' timeline and while that was original and refreshing in the first book by the third it just all felt a bit samey.
I definitely recommend reading the The Oldest Living Vampire in the series format. And there are probably some mini spoilers in this review, so just note that. I continue to love Joseph Duncan's straight up writing style, with an emphasis on detail not only to an ancient era, but with an ancient man's viewpoint of our own era.
In this novel, Gon or (Thet) as he is known by his clan's descendants takes a son who he later transfers the strix to. Before he transferred the strix to his adopted son, his son impregnated a clan member, later marrying her and they learn to live among the Tanti clan for 3 years.
Later, the clan and his sons family are put into danger by the blood drinkers in the east. He's sharing all of this (continuing to share with the sociopath) he kidnapped in the second book in the series, for a surprising reason.
Gon tells of visiting the hellish town these blood suckers and their slaves with their "God" populate. He falls in love with another vampire, who did not wish to become one (like him), and she helps him escape. I'm eager to read the (final?) book in the series. I'm still not sure about Gon's choice, but hey I'm not the writer! I do love Duncan's writing, and I'm eager to see what he comes up with next.
I’m a reader I’ve been a reader since forever and I get into different genres and sometimes I read a book and I’m like oh it was good but this book was intense and detailed and it brought you right into it and it made you look around it made you think and it made you not want to put it down until you were done and I can’t read can’t wait to read the next one
It is a good story that would have been 4 stars, but the narrator repets himself in the beginning often. Also, nothing to do with the author good reads has the order of the series is wrong. This one was 3rd and it says 4th and the one I am reading notlw is 4th but good reads has it as the 6 the order I am finishing them is the order they are on kindle they are numbered correctly
It’s just a good read, perhaps the next book will unravel more interesting stories about Gon and his brethren, at times I find the story rather unexciting.
I am really enjoying this series! It is fast becoming one of my favourites. I particularly enjoy the author's take on prehistoric culture, very interesting. I would have liked to find out more about the vampire city. Can't wait to Starr the next book!
Reading this next book, I keep wanting more... not the blood or the others just more about this vampire. His soul can a vampire really have a soul live this long n still...feel?
Excellent writing makes this an engrossing "history lesson", more personal this time.
The descriptions of the how's and why's of vampire nature and physiology flow seamlessly, almost believably. There is a curious sympathy for Gon which allows the reader to deeply appreciate the duality of his nature.
...But then I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.
This is an easy series to recommend, and I look forward to the next instalment which I have just downloaded!
Rod Redux's Oldest Living Vampire Series has been great fun to read! In the Oldest Living Vampire In Love, Rod continues with Gon, a 30,000 year old vampire telling us how he discovered his soul mate and fell in love. I'm looking forward to more of Gon's exploits as he hunts, meets out justice, exacts revenge and lays even more pipe. A great series...
I enjoyed this book MUCH more than the second, but still not as much as the first book in the series. Will probably download the 4th book when it gets to Kindle. I don't think the author needs to be so graphic to get his points across. It seems like he realized this after the second book?
As this is told as autobiography, this Gon is very wordy. Some parts of his story is very slow but he gives you insight to his life and how he has lived so long.
Excellent book, as always. Continuation of a wonderful story, complete with all the sex, violence, gore, & suspense. I can't wait for the next installment.
Still loving the background on Gon. However, this Lukas fellow needs to go and quick!! That one should never been allowed to live with all the things he has done!
