A story after me. This is so fabulous a concept, a concept which is very interesting to me... It will always remain a personal favourite, forever. If you daydream about time travel and are always nostalgic about the days gone by, this book is for you too.
Simply put....Magnificiant. This book will always have a special place in my heart. The story is very well written and I give this book shining five stars for being one of most completely engrossing and emotionally absorbing piece of literature.
Lauren Ferguson has been in love with Nicolas Kenward since she was a girl. Only problem is, he lives in the 16th century and at present, is just a painting. When she finds herself whisked back in time and suddenly a prisoner of Lord Kenward, a tool of his revenge against Lord Armstrong, the man he thinks is her father, she has to adjust her feelings. Suddenly, he's not just a dream, but a real, flesh and blood man with flaws and aggravating, stubborn behavior. But that doesn't stop her from being in love with him, nor wanting to help him overcome his anger and save his life.
This is kind of one of those simple, follows a formula but it works stories. I've read books like this dozens of times, but no matter, I still enjoy them. This follows a lot of the cliches and tropes, but not in an overly cheesy or annoying way. In one respect, that's not a great thing because it doesn't make this book stand out. However, I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. I liked how Lauren came to realize that she was in another time, rather than in a renactment and how it highlighted the reality and brutality of war. I liked how she didn't keep bringing up aspects of the present/future (like TV and plumbing) so I was able to become immersed in the time period she was in and so that this story didn't feel in the least bit dated (and it was first published in 1997). I like that Nicholas never really buys into the fact that Lauren is from the future...even at the end he doesn't completely believe her. And I found that strange that I would like it, but he was still accepting of her eccentricities and it wasn't a huge deal to her that he believe it. So I was okay with it.
I admit, I was initially discomfited by Nicholas's willingness to rape an innocent girl in the name of revenge (even if he didn't). I also wish that we could have gotten a little more closure with Elisa and Ronan. Maybe the author had originally planned a book for them, but just never got there. Finally, I kind of wish the epilogue had been clear about whether the people in the present knew that THEIR Lauren was Lady Kenward - it wasn't 100% clear that they knew that. This was a great story...I so very much wish this author had written more.

My FAVOURITE time travel story mixing romance with an amazing story line. I read this when I was 16 and re-read it at least once a year! Nicholas is a man to dream about and Lauren is a woman to look up to. 5 stars!
This book started out very slowly for me. It took me a few tries of picking it up before I could really get into it, but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I would recommend this as a good read to others though. Hopefully it won't be a slow starter for anyone else.
