A ghost and an animated skeleton wander and meander about a nearly empty afterlife, proving that death can be as pointless as life if you waste it with cigs and liquor.

I just can't bring myself to care about any of this.

Een laat verjaardagscadeau van Kaat. Verrassende graphic novel (of strip) over een rokend en zuipend spook en een avontuurlijk ingesteld skelet. Beiden bevinden zich in het hiernamaals of toch een vreemde en verlaten wereld. Absurd, maar toch aangenaam om te lezen en vooral te bekijken. Originele stijl met af en toe pareltjes van prenten.

Verhaaltje van spook: "Kijk daar, hoe de maan boven de bomen rijst... Of beter gezegd... hoe ze in zicht komt terwijl wij naar haar toe wentelen en zij zelf rond ons cirkelt... bijna zoals tandwielen die rond elkaar lopen en rondom het Grote Tandwiel van de Zon! Dat zelf maar één van zoveel radertje is rond het enorme zwarte gat in het hart van de Melkweg. Maar ook dat zwart gat is op zijn beurt slechts een tandwiel in een immens raderwerk. Het Raderwerk van het Universum! Alle tijd... alle ruimte... van de grootste quasars tot de kleinste quarks... tot onze eigen levens! Als omwentelingen die elkaar nu eens kruisen en dan weer uit elkaar drijven... En ook al lijken we er op een dag niet meer te zijn, onthoud hoe eindeloos groot het universum is... en dat het altijd blijft wentelen en draaien... Dus net zoals de maan nooit echt weg is wanneer ze terug achter de horizon zakt... zo ook zijn wij slechts uit het zicht verdwenen..."

Van prima graphic novels lezen ga je gelukkig niet dood, al is het ook erg verslavend. Deze papierjunk verwacht dus snel nieuw werk van Desmet (of ik begin echt te roken, om de zenuwen onder controle te krijgen).

Gah this book is amazing. So beautifully drawn, with so many weird amazing compositions that stick in your head. Aimless in a way that feels real and right. I can't stop thinking of it.

Pisanie, że „Smoking kills” ma jakieś głębokie filozoficzne przesłanie to typowa próba podnoszenia statusu komiksu przez udowadnianie, że jest czymś więcej: „Patrzcie, komiks może poruszać tak trudne tematy jak życie i śmierć, coś dla wymagających”. Ja tego nie kupuję, czytałem opinie skupiające się na tym aspekcie dzieła Thijsa Desmeta, ale uważam, że po pierwsze wcale nie jest w wymowie jakieś szczególnie głębokie i nie wymaga kompetencji czytelniczej w tym zakresie, a po drugie nie jest świetne dlatego, że ma jakieś intelektualne ambicje, ma wystarczająco dużo innych atutów, by je cenić. Nie potrzebuje porównań z ambitną literaturą czy filmem, bo jego zalety przejawiają się w typowo komiksowych aspektach.

Dwóch bohaterów, jeden bardzo narwany, jeszcze nie rozgoryczony, drugi zgorzkniały, choć pozornie życiowo mądrzejszy. Znamy to? A jakże, jedzie na tym patencie mnóstwo książek i filmów kryminalnych i nie tylko (Shrek i osioł z jakiegoś powodu pierwszy przyszedł do głowy). W „Smoking kills” tym mądrym, ale i rozczarowanym, przez to chlejącym na umór jest duch, a nieopierzonym i naiwnym – szkielet. Oboje zawieszeni gdzieś we wszechświecie po śmierci, o czym jeden wie, a w co drugi nie do końca wierzy. Oboje w dosyć luźnych i zabawnych historiach przekonują się, że nawet w zaświatach nie wszystko jest przewidywalne, że wszystko bywa ulotne (nawet nieistnienie) i mimo że próbujemy się odizolować, bo wydaje nam się, że jesteśmy samowystarczalni, to tak naprawdę „nikt nie jest samotną wyspą”. Banały? Niby tak, ale właśnie w tym siła medium, że to co w pobieżnym streszczeniu nie zachęca, w realizacji zachwyca.

Zakochałem się w stronie formalnej tych historii. W oszczędnym słownictwie i dynamice opowieści - nie w sensie pędzącej akcji, a raczej intensywnej gestykulacji, wyrazistości postaci, umiejętności wzbudzeniu śmiechu czytelnika w krótkim czasie, przy jednoczesnym podszyciu całości bardziej refleksyjnym tłem. „Smoking kills” przy niewielkich modyfikacjach treści i bardziej konwencjonalnej kresce mógłby nawet uchodzić za komiks kierowany do młodzieży, jednak autor woli bardziej undergroundowy (momentami zbliżony do twórczości Simona Hanselmanna) rysunek, co w sumie jest świetnym w swej niejednoznaczności wyborem.

Polubiłem kolesi i mam nadzieję, na więcej, a scena na peronie, w której szkielet podchodzi do palącego papierosa ducha i mówi: „smoking kills…”, na co ten odpowiada: „we’re already dead”, automatycznie wpisuje się w mój prywatny kanon najwspanialszych w historii komiksu.

Ett spöke och ett skelett vandrar runt i någon slags dödsrike som ser väldigt mycket ut som vår egen värld, utan att riktigt veta hur de hamnat där. Spöket är cyniskt och röker och super för fullt, medan skelettet inte tror på att de är döda och plågar sin vän med att vägra inse faktum och leta efter en väg ut.

Jag köpte den här serieromanen i princip enbart baserat på omslaget men blev inte besviken. Den är en fantastiskt berättad historia som är både rörande och rolig, och som öppnar för många tolkningar.

Gillar man omslaget blir man heller inte besviken på innehållet, det är charmigt naivt där ett fåtal färger möter gråskalor. Jag gillar särskilt hur Desmet jobbar med skuggor och ljus, och hur han lyckas variera sig på ett väldigt lekfullt sätt genom hela boken.

Ska jag komma med någon invändning är det hur vissa grå fält har "färglagts" digitalt i efterhand på ett sätt som jag inte tycket riktigt lirar med det grafiska i övrigt, men där är vi verkligen nere på detaljnivå i vad som i övrigt ligger väldigt nära en fullpoängare.

Ghost, Skeleton and Dog forever <3 I was obsessed with this. This is a fully illustrated graphic novel and the art is beautiful and what drew me in initially. Skeleton just joined the afterlife and Ghost has been dead a long time and spends his time drinking and smoking to cope. These two have an adorable grumpy/sunshine dynamic. If you love Adventure Time/Over The Garden Wall (it gives me that energy) and have grown into a bit of a pessimistic and sarcastic adult (there are dark topics in here), I think this is perfect for you! Smoking Kills also had me fully crying at times, it does not shy away from talking about death and the meaning of life but I think it covers them beautifully. I will 100% read it again!

Indrukwekkend, grappig, lichtelijk puberaal, zeer eigenzinnig. Je voelt dat er achter de absurditeit iets diepers ligt, iets transcendentaals.
Op de zender Adult Swim kom je soms pareltjes tegen van deze aard (maar dan als tv-programma, natuurlijk).

This is easily one of the best comics that I have read in a long time. I love how there remains a ton of mystery to why these characters are here or what happened to them in the first place. The off-beat humor was also great, even with the overarching somber tone. This really hit the spot for me.

Van Roken ga je Dood is een humoristisch verhaal over Spook en Skelet.
Het verhaal gaat niet echt ergens heen, maar zo gaat dat nu eenmaal in het hiernamaals... en dat is ook wat het boek sterk maakt!
Er zitten enorm veel prachtige scènes in die je helemaal meeslepen tot je met je neus tegen het boek plakt.
En daar blijf ik met plezier nog even tegenplakken!

3.5; like Sam Beckett turned into an Adventure Time/Regular Show-era Cartoon Network series as written by Jim Jarmusch, this is a postmortal slacker Waiting for Godot where the search for booze and something of interest is just as if not more important than the quest for meaning, occasionally sidetracked by dogs, whales, and versions of themselves from more exciting parallel universes - deadpan and dry in the extreme, but still quietly effective and at times quite touching.

This is the first graphic novel I’ve read & I picked it up bc the illustrations were so captivating. Very cute
