Rate this book
From Amazon Bestselling Author Coreene Callahan comes a spellbinding novel about a woman born to stand in the breech between parallel worlds where revolution is imminent, honor means little, and the stakes are life and death.

Truly Langford-Bardot has spent her life pretending to be normal. No one knows about the monsters that stalk her sleep, or that she was left inside a cardboard box on the steps of a church as a newborn. Raised in foster care on the tough streets of Philadelphia, she learned to take care of herself and trust no one.

After being forced out of her dream job, she’s working a dead-end one when a mysterious stranger arrives with proof she’s heiress to a Victorian mansion in a ramshackle neighborhood. But upon entering her new home, Truly accidentally unlocks a door to a magical realm, releasing an ancient evil from its prison—along with a dark family secret.

Hunted by those who rule the mirror kingdom, Truly comes face-to-face with Westvane, the queen’s slayer, and is given an ultimatum—help him recapture the monster she set free and kill the queen, or be executed for opening a portal to another world.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for letting me read and review this book!

Reading the synopsis, I was very intrigued in the idea of this book - doors that can be opened to another world and monsters that can go back and forth? Yes please! However, throughout the book, I feel like I was constantly being left wanting more, but unfortunately not in a good way.

I found myself pointing out many world building flaws, information that characters shouldn’t know considering it was their first time in the human world (Westvane knew how traffic lights worked but not that you couldn’t walk down the middle of the street?). The ideas behind the magic lore and mechanics seemed good, but I don’t think they were executed well. Truly seemed to figure out her magic without any help, and somehow knew what she was capable of doing without any exploration or explanation - or at least any that was included in the book. I was also disappointed with the seemingly immediate change in Westvanes personality once he met Truly, I do wish he had kept some of that fear-mongering-“I mean business” persona instead of seeming so easy to breakdown and grinning at everything Truly said.
I didn’t DNF this story, but I might have if I wasn’t reading for the purpose of writing this review.

First, thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for approving me to read this arc and write this review! Now to the book.. At some points I was leaning towards a 4 star, then something would knock it down for me.. spoilers ahead. First off, I loved how the start of the book was. Her kind of dead end job, then coming into inheriting this mansion and all this money (all of our dreams, right?) her power to open doors to other realms is awesome! Westvane… I absolutely LOVED the raven that turns into a tattoo. How freaking cool. I was really looking forward to Westvanes powers and personality. Side note, I was not a fan of either of the main characters names. As soon as he came to earth he was not what I was expecting which sucked a little. I was still leaning to a four, then mantipede… I had to put the book down. I almost wish the tone of the book didn’t jump from serious to the attempt at what I assume would be humor? I think it could have completely done away with mantipede and been better for it. Then, the queen only gave him less than a day to get her and the Wendigo who burrows at night? Should have been at least a week and in that time he could have helped her learn her magic like he said he would. Instead she pretty much figures it out on her own (which common) and spent their first night together drinking scotch. The boss being a gargoyle was good, I liked that character but again, do away with the mantipede and keep the gargoyle. I loved the part where they were running from the rock creatures and then going into the forest. I LOVED that he called her “princess”, totally swoon worthy. My overall rating is going to be a 3.5 star. Some fine tuning would really make this book a 4 for me. It had some really strong areas, as well as some really weak areas.. At one point there was like three or four pages where it was just talking about the ‘Couda. I did have to skim because I didn’t want to read more about a car. Also, wish there was more Wendigo as that is one of the main “bad scary” creatures of the book and I feel like we spent more time with the rock creatures (even though I loved that). That being said, thank you for this opportunity to read and review your work!

ARC Review: 3.25 ⭐️ This book was good! There’s magic, found family, powerful FMC coming into her powers, protective MMC, adventure…

I’m excited to see Truly and Westvane’s friendship develop. They make a great team and once they get on the same track then they’ll be even more formidable opponents. Love Eastbrook and want to see more of him. Pretty much hate everyone’s name in this book though haha.

I wish that there were labels on chapters to indicate a POV change.

I do feel like the Queen having falsies and other human makeup 27 years after the bridge to the human realm was closed is a bit unrealistic. If it is originally from the human realm, then it would probably be bad by now. If those things were made in Azlandia, then that was not explained. Some things were just not explained very well throughout.

Review:
⚠️MAY HAVE SPOILERS! ⚠️
Sad to say I DNF around 50% 😬 I hate not finishing a book. I just couldn't do it. I was bored. There are a lot of world-building flaws. There weren't many character descriptions at the beginning of the book. You had no idea what half the characters looked like. The magic and lore weren't executed well. The MFC seemed to figure out her magic without much help even though she didn't know how to use it. There wasn't much explanation in the book on how she figured it out herself. At least from what I read. Regarding the MMC's personality, I liked him at first, but his change in personality as the book went on after meeting the MFC was disappointing. He always called her Princess which got annoying quickly. I also don't know how he would know what some things are in the human world if he had never been there. I wish there were labels on the chapters when the POV changed. I got confused sometimes. This book has so much potential. It was lacking that spark for me. I wanted to like it from reading the book's description. 🥺

Phenomenal book!

This book is amazing!! My review won't include spoilers. I tend to review based on my feelings after reading a book. I've read the Dragon Fury series by this author so I thought I would try this book out. I am so glad that I did! The characters are extremely well written, the world building is incredible, and I cannot wait for the next book to come out! I also cannot wait for the book to come out on Audible because I tend to listen to books more than read on my Kindle. I loved the interactions between Truly and Westvane. The plot of the story flowed so well. I was instantly drawn into the story and didn't want to put the book down! I was lucky enough to be introduced to this author, Coreene Callahan, in one of my book clubs and I am very thankful for this! Her books are very well written and no matter what one you pick up to read you will not be disappointed! I highly recommend this author, and honestly any of her books! I cannot wait for the next book in this series to come out and see what will happen next! Excellent first book in a new series!

4.25 Stars ⭐️

I have read and enjoyed the Dragon Fury Series by Ms. Callahan, so when I saw this new book that was the beginning of a new series, I thought, "why not?"

This new series introduces us to two new characters - Truly - who is a woman, raised in foster care, living as a private investigator. And Westvane or West, who we learn little by little, has been kept captive by a Queen and who holds another title....that of Slayer.

We get to meet the two of them when Truly comes of age and learns that for a mortal who had never ever known any different - she is NOT human. She is, in fact, a Door Master - and that means she is a threat to the current queen of another realm. The queen has exterminated Truly's entire family line, yet somehow Truly was sheltered and therefore allowed to live and grow up.

When West is sent after Truly, they both realise that they have reasons to work together. There are also things going on in the world that are being shown to the reader, but there is still more that we do not yet understand.

This was a fun and easy read. It was east to like both Truly and West, while at the same time rooting against the Queen.

I am definitley interested in the storyline and will be eager to continue to book 2.

ARC review

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

I really love the idea of this Fantasy world, opening doors from one reality to another. I loved the dynamics of the FMC & MMC. “Princess”. What made me lower the rating was I found maybe there wasn’t enough world building at times and then at other times I had a hard time following, like with the various monsters introduced. Overall it felt a little disjointed, but I do love the main idea of the book. Also wasn’t a big fan of the names of the main characters.

I want to first off thank the author and netgalley for giving me the privilege of reviewing this book, I really appreciate it.
Diving straight in I loved the idea that literal monsters could walk through an open door.
Unfortunately due to the style of writting I had to DNF at 16%. For me it was very messy and I had to constantly reread certain parts or geuss whos perspective I was reading from which took the enjoyment away.
I did love the concept and idea of the book but the overall writing is what made me DNF

This is one of my favorite books of the year!! I love Coreene's Dragon Books but this one is AMAZING. I'm not even getting into details....just read this book you won't be sorry. I loved this book and if I didn't need to sleep in order to make a better life for my cats by working I would have stayed up all night and day to read this book. Absolutely one of the best books Coreene has written , in my opinion.

First, thank you to the author, Oliver Heber Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.

Second, I want to say that this ARC was VERY messy. This was the messiest ARC I've ever received and it made it very hard to stay in the story. That being said I'm going to try my hardest to separate the technical errors of the writing from the story. However, the general style of writing was not the best for me. There is an odd truncated-like run-on description that happens again and again that really pulled me out. Example:

"Angry.
Frustrated.
Murderous. Priestly wanted to..."

"His reaction was maddening. Confusing. Annoying."

It happens dozens of times. Also an exuberant amount of ellipses are used. It felt lazy and didn't paint the world like it deserved

The story concept is insanely interesting but not enough to hold the attention of the reader for me. The multiple POVs didn't add anything. The action sequences were confusing. There is zero flirting/tension/romance. I am well versed in ignoring plot holes but a fair amount of situations made me scratch my head. We also don't get enough bread crumbs to be invested in the future of these characters.

Overall, I think this concept needed more time and some solid Beta readers.

What a great start to an interesting new series. I was afraid that I would miss the dragons, but this is a riveting story. Truly is a young woman learning who she is and what she is capable of. Westvane is working to elevate his life. I’m looking forward to the next book.

dnf at 82%. A self-indulgent very YA adventure story with lots wish-fulfillment fantasy.

There are lots of problems I expect from rookies like characters understanding words/phrases or concepts they should not have any way of understanding. If you don't recognize a smartphone and call it a "rectangle" it makes no sense that you understand and appreciate a powerful car engine.
These things happen all the time with various characters and different scenarios.
The MMC has not been in the human world for many decades if ever but his understanding of modern urban environments fluctuates wildly depending on how the author wanted to write a scene. Sagely nodding about a sexy car motor sound is more important than consistency. This might sound like I am harping on this one example but there are dozens.
To give another example, the FMC has no idea anything supernatural existed whatsoever but later on she just understands cultural nuances of gargoyle society in a different world somehow and comments on it. This happens all throughout the book and no care has been taken for any sort of consistency about what characters know and understand from their perspectives. If the author knows it, then there is a good chance all characters just magically know it as well.

The FMC character development is also very lazy. She doesn't really develop at all. Her inherited magical powers just keep gifting her awesome powers and abilities like expert dual-wield staff fighting out of nowhere and random magic to save the day. Nothing is deserved, nothing has been worked for. None of it is consistent or later considered as a coherent set of skills that make any sort of sense.

The MMC is your typical flat sexy uber powerful hunk of menflesh that goes all growly over the FMC but doesn't realize how important she is to him yadda yadda. You have read it all before. There isn't a strong emphasis on sexual tension but I wouldn't be surprised if this might get at least a little smutty later on either at the end of this book or the next one.

The bad guy (or rather girl) is the typical ruthless evil tyrant type. Very shallow and merciless and enjoys hurting and torturing, you know the type. Point is, a bad guy as shallow as can be.

There is a whole bunch of stupidity going on that had me physically rolling my eyes especially in relation to this tyrant but I wasn't even that badly annoyed by it because it doesn't make a big dent after all the other lazy crap I was already wading through.

It's all around very lack-luster like very little effort and skill went into this. If this was a first book, this would actually not be that bad. It reads like a book written by someone without much experience trying their hand seriously at the craft for the first time. But this author has been writing since at least 2012. So this is just throwaway garbage to pay rent. Not a serious attempt at writing a good book.

*Thank you to NetGalley and Oliver Heber Books for an ARC of The House of Starlight & Shadow*

Breakdown of rating:

Plot 4/5
Characters 3/5
Writing 2.5/5
Pacing 3.5/5
Spice 0/5 peppers (does not impact my overall rating)

Overall I'd give the book 3/5 stars, given its strong plot foundation and decent world-building setup for an urban fantasy series. However, the point of view was a very confusing writing choice and the character themselves, while interesting enough, were kind of one dimensional and had inconsistent character development.

The Plot: The concept itself was really strong for an urban fantasy, and I have high hopes that Callahan can refine it a bit in the future installments. It had the classic foundation of "I woke up and have a magic now", so the author should have a lot of successful resource material to look to for the sequel. Earth realm existing alongside a sort-of fairytale-esque realm is a bit Once Upon a Time, so if done right the series could be fun.

The Characters: I struggled to decide on a rating for the characters, because on one hand I like the basis created for them, but on the other hand they were so one dimensional that I'm not all that attached. I'm more attached to Westvane's raven tattoo-turned-flier than anyone else, so I hope Callahan gives the characters the dimension they deserve moving forward. They all had a lot of potential that I feel was a bit squandered, even though at the heart of it I do like them.

The Writing: The writing was where this book fell flat for me and could have caused a DNF a few different times if I wasn't determined to give a well-rounded review. It's written in 3rd person with multiple points of view, and it gets extremely confusing at times because you'll forget whose POV the chapter is in. It's not a writing decision I would have recommended for this series. I actually found it easier to understand when I speed read/skimmed at points. Also, Truly was not a great name choice in my opinion for the same reason. It got confusing because I'd find myself reading a sentence and reading "Truly" as the word and not the name, which happened a lot since it was in 3rd person POV.

The Pacing: The pacing was decent, but sometimes the author got caught up over explaining the meaning or importance of something that was already pretty obvious to the reader, which would make it last longer. For example, we don't need to be explicitly told that this going to be about a political revolution in Azlandia, that's pretty clear, so spending extra time explaining it to Westvane (us) just felt silly.

Overall I'd say the book is worth giving a try, and if I hit a lull in my TBR when the sequel comes out I will probably pick it up to see if the author surprises me with any of the directions she takes it!

Happy reading everyone!

This is a fine tribute to the beginning of the Mirror Kingdom Chronicles. If I were to judge the series by just this novel alone, I would say that its execution is far superior to Callahan’s Dragonfury Series and can compete with works by Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer Armentrout. The author takes world building to a whole new level with numerous wondrous realms, the fauna and flora that exist within them, and the intelligent creatures that reside and govern there.
The story begins with a financially strapped young woman, Truly Langford-Bardot, who is working in a sleazy job in Philadelphia, when she is presented with a windfall - a sizable inheritance accompanied by a Victorian mansion. Simultaneously in the realm of Azlandia, the queen is informed that a dangerous creature has escaped prison and left the realm through a doorway to Earth, where Truly has just entered through the door to her new home. In order to recapture this creature, Queen Lyonesse must enlist the aid of the “Slayer” Westvane to retrieve it. She offers his freedom in exchange for this favor, and “by the way, could you also kill the Turnbolt while you’re on Earth”. Truly has numerous surprises before her first day ends in her new home. The dangerous creature scrambles through her home, then transforms into a human and bolts out the front door. Shortly thereafter Westvane comes charging in interrogating her, assessing the home and making himself comfortable, while not really answering any of her questions. What really baffles her is that her boss and a friendly homeless man are not who or what they appear to be. And that’s where the adventure begins…truly! 😬
This is not a romance between Truly and Westvane…yet, but one can only hope. It is however, an extraordinary journey for Truly and an inner discovery for Westvane. It’s deflating to find out that the next in the series is a year away. But I’m sure it will be well worth the wait, if this book is any indication. Enjoy this well written fantasy. It’s deserving of more than any 5 stars 🌟!

Thank you Xpress Book Tours, NetGalley and Coreene Callahan for the ARC! I couldn’t complete the book with the ARC alone and was beyond thrilled to purchase a Kindle copy to complete my read. I’m sure that shows how much I enjoyed this work! Now, on to the review:

Truly is an independent, strong-willed woman, who appears to have the worst cards dealt to her when it comes to her circumstances. Abandoned at birth, grasping to survive in a world that is filled with untrustworthy individuals, and a financially downtrodden lifestyle. She goes about her mundane life, until a stranger turns her life upside down, by means of granting her a house that apparently belongs to her, by birthright! This begins a journey of discovery and self-realization in our main character, who is magical even prior to her awareness of her actual magical powers as the only surviving Door Master.

Westvane, a lethal Slayer, who is imprisoned by the queen of Azlandia. His chance at freedom comes at the price of hunting out the last Door Master. What he discovers is a compelling, magical witch, whose true magic lies in her character. Her sheer willpower, strength and complete lack of fear upon encountering him, leaves him perplexed. Is she someone who he should hunt, or is she an ally from an unlikely source? As he assists the Door Master discover her powers, he discovers more about his own truths, and this is no easy reality to process.

This unlikely pair traverses through the Mirror Kingdom, in efforts to protect both realms and undo the existing prejudices and injustice which plagues the magical kingdom. WIll they succeed? Will Westvane succumb to his instincts as a Slayer?

As a first time reader of Coreene’s work, I appreciated the ease with which she weaves her story and characters for her readers. It is not easy to fully immerse oneself in a world that the author builds, but she eases us into two worlds! The emotions, politics, the appetite for justice were all emotions and thoughts, that as a reader I was easily able to get behind. What an amazing start to the Mirror Kingdom Chronicles!

Brief Summary: “After being forced out of her dream job, [Truly is] working a dead-end one when a mysterious stranger arrives with proof she's heiress to a Victorian mansion in a ramshackle neighborhood. But upon entering her new home, Truly accidentally unlocks a door to a magical realm, releasing an ancient evil from its prison-along with a dark family secret.”

If you enjoy fast-paced books set in both modern and fantasy worlds, with some humor and unique characters then this book is for you!

This was a fast, fun read. I loved the characters of Truly, Westvane, and Montrose and the banter between them. There are lots of magical creatures that make an appearance, including Wendigos, rock badgers, yetis, evil octopuses, and a “Man”-tipede. There is no romance in this book, but could occur in the next book. I also appreciated how the book began to explore current issues such as the impact of climate change and how a caste system is unjust and oppressive.

The reason for my rating comes from the lack of world-building and several plot holes. This book felt like a teenager who really wants to be an adult, but isn’t quite there yet. Several points in the book just don’t make sense, such as how Truly just allows a homeless man to live in her new home and doesn’t question why he is a magical creature that has been watching over her. Or, why Westvane knows how so many things in the Earth Realm work despite never having been there. I’d love more backstory on how Truly’s house was made and how it can speak to her.

While overall I enjoyed this book, it was hard to let some of the glaring issues go. With more fleshed out world-building and character development, the next book in this series has potential to gain a higher rating from me!

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book. All reviews and opinions expressed are honest and my own.

Review: 3-star
This was a tough one for me to give a 3-star, but with all the sentences with missed words, I just can’t give it anything higher. It drives me crazy that editors aren’t picking this up. I love how Coreene can spin a story and get you so involved you hate when the story ends and you are dying for the next book in the series to come out. This one like all her others has sucked me in. I really feel a beta reader who reads word for word is needed as this seems to be an ongoing problem with all her books and I put this on the editors, not her, they should be catching it. I keep telling myself that I need to write all these missed words down so I can put them in a review, but I get reading and can’t stop and then forget which chapter and paragraphs the missed words were in. I am a word-for-word reader and would love to come on board to help make her stories even better.

This is the start of a fabulous fantasy-paranormal series. I suspect it's a long burn romance over the series of two individuals that start out as enemies and by the end of the book are friends and teammates. Truly Langford-Bardot's life is totally upended when she discovers she had a long lost great-aunt who willed her an old Victorian house and a small fortune in the bank. This is her story of discovering who she really is and what her roll is in a world that's so much bigger than she ever imagined.

When we meet Truly she's working for a sleaze-bag private investigator firm Montrose & Brim Investigations. She lost her dream job as a photographer of celebrities when she turned in a sexual harassment complaint. She lost her job, apartment, reputation, everything. Now she's photographing cheating husbands and personal injury frauds. Her boss Montrose is a major grump. She made friends with Earl, a homeless guy that hangs out outside of the office. When a troll like man, Minador, comes into the office to meet with Truly, her life changes radically. She's discovers she's really Truly Isabeth Trunbolt. Her name was changed when she was found on the doorstep of St. Redeemers Church as an infant. The house she's inherited is run down on the outside but spotless on the inside. We later find out it's invisible to ordinary humans. Then strange things begin to happen. She meets a monster who appears out of nowhere. Another a monster of a man who has murder in his eyes shows up next. The first monster is the Wendigo, "chaos maker and destroyer of worlds" who escaped from Eckizbad prison. The second is the slayer Westvane, sent to capture him as well as bring Truly back to Queen Lyonesse in the other realm of Azlandia. The queen wants to permanently close the doors to the earth. She was the one who killed Truly's parents thinking she ended the Turnbolt legacy. She learns from Westvane she's "The Doormaster", the only human who can open doors between Earth and Azlandia, who are twin worlds dependent on each other. Then her boss Montrose shows at her door. When he crosses the threshold he becomes a gargoyle. Earl shows up and becomes a manipede, half man with his lower body resembling a centipede. And so starts the adventure of a lifetime for Truly.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

While Truly has lived somewhat of an unusual life-being left at the doors of a Catholic church as an infant will do that to a girl-being informed of her real identity and receiving the key to her ancestral home at age 27 REALLY kick-starts her destiny in a way she never could have imagined.
Magic is in her blood. She is a Turnbolt. A Door Master between realms. As her powers spark, she accidentally releases a Wendigo from his imprisonment in Azlandia. He has stepped through the door she created into her home on Earth and his sole purpose is to find ways to cause mayhem and misery. She must learn to control her newly released magic before she harms more lives than she can fathom. Her unlikely teacher/protector comes in the form of the Slayer. Westvane is considered a dangerous abomination in his world. A hybrid of two powerful beings, a hunter & a magic wielder. He was released from his solitary, eternal prison by the ruthless, fanatical queen in order to recapture the Wendigo and to deliver the newly discovered Turnbolt to his realm. Queen Lyonesse has vowed his freedom will be awarded upon the completion of these tasks. The queen has spent years eradicating Truly’s family to ensure there were no others who could open doors between her pristine Azlandia and the vile pollution of Earth.
Will Westvane, who is desperate to escape his own prison and remove Queen Lyonesse from power, see Truly as an opportunity for change for Azlandia or will he deliver her to the queen to complete his task and earn his own personal freedom?.

Thank you to Netgalley the Publisher, of Oliver Heber Books, and the author Coreene Callahan for providing and allowing me to review this book. Which, I'm giving my honest and sincere review.

As I delved into "The House of Starlight & Shadow" by Coreene Callahan, I found myself immersed in a world teeming with magic and mystery. While the story held plenty of intrigue and kept me engaged throughout, there were a few aspects that left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed.
One of the drawbacks was the pacing of the plot. At times, the story felt rushed, with important events and character developments occurring too quickly. This made it challenging to fully invest in the narrative and connect with the characters on a deeper level.

Additionally, while the concept of parallel worlds and ancient evils was intriguing, I couldn't help but notice similarities to other works, such as "The Starling House" series. While these elements weren't inherently negative, they did detract from the originality of the story and made it feel less innovative than I had hoped.
Furthermore, some of the character motivations and interactions felt slightly contrived, particularly in the latter half of the book. Certain plot twists and revelations seemed to come out of left field, detracting from the overall cohesiveness of the story.

Despite these drawbacks, "The House of Starlight & Shadow" still offered an entertaining read filled with adventure and suspense. While it may not have been perfect, it held enough intrigue to keep me turning pages, eager to uncover the secrets hidden within its pages.

Truly, an orphan who has learned to take care of herself and not trust anyone others. She is working a dead-end job as a private investigator when a stranger finds her to tell her she is an heiress to a mansion. In her new house Truly accidentally opens a door to a realm of magic unleashing a evil creature and her families secrets. She begins to be hunted when she meets Westvane who gives her a deal. The deal is to help capture the monster she let out and kill the queen of the magic realm. If not, then they both will be killed for what they are.

“The House of Starlight and Shadow” by Coreene Callahan has so many things I liked. Some aspects of the story I didn’t like was how into cars Truly is. I’m not a car person and for me it didn’t add to her character or anything. Plus driving a car as a private investigator doesn’t make sense to her trying to be incognito. I did like so many other things though. I like the bird tattoo that is an actual bird. And most of all, I loved Westvane and wish there was even more of him. His backstory is so tragic that I wished for an entire book to his pre-existing life before the events of this story. I wholeheartedly give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

Truly is a woman who does not know who she comes from, and learns, in an instant, that she has some serious magical ability in her bloodline. Now, how to overcome all that she does not know and survive in her new reality? Westvane is a man who knows exactly who he comes from is given an opportunity to rise above is own bloodline. Now, how to overcome the obstacles thrown in front of him and the distrust in the people around him?

The House of Starlight and Shadow is the unremarkable title to a remarkable first installment in a new series. Fantasy that brings together our own mundane earth and a parallel world has all the magic, emotions, action, intrigue and friendships one can ask for in a great fantasy novel. The main characters guide the reader through two realms, separate, but linked, in an adventure that is sure to change the two worlds forever.

This books recalls Callahan’s Circle of Seven series in its fantasy content but the style of the book is reminiscent of the fast-paced, snarky dialog Dagonfury series. Except for the semi-cliffhanger ending, I loved this book. Equally strong female and male lead characters, imaginative dangerous worlds, and an a lot of fun await!

The premise of this book had me hooked right from the start! For me, it felt like nothing I'd ever read before and I was excited to dive into it.

The book's pacing was done really well and for the most part all the characters and storyline itself were done really well! Where I found I struggled reading was getting around the world-building and some obvious plot holes in the world itself. I think for me, as long as I didn't focus too hard on them it worked well for me and I was able to enjoy the book for what it was, a book about monsters walking through doors, and a whole other world that humans have no idea existed.

The dynamic between the two main characters were fun, but sometimes the characters knew more than they should have, how can someone from a fantasy realm know about traffic lights but crosses the street in the middle of the road? There was a slight lack of consistencies when it came to plot holes like that but overall, it was still a really fun read! Definitely not a book to take too seriously when reading!

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I loved the world building here - the idea that a different, magical world is connected to our world. And the only way through is via the Ecotone, which is controlled by the Door Masters. And the main character, Truly, just happens to be the last one alive. The twist, she didn’t know magic even existed until everything started going slightly haywire.
Beyond the world building, I enjoyed the characters. The chemistry between Truly and Westvane kept me coming back to read “just one more chapter”. Then you add in the side characters, Montrose, Earl, and Eastbrook, and dynamics just get that much better.
The only issue I had, was that at the end of the book, nothing felt resolved. This isn’t a stand alone, so not having all the answers was expected. But now I have more questions than answers and have to (impatiently) wait for the next installment to see how things play out and what some of the characters’ real motivations are.
I received this book from the publisher/author at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.

Thank you to Coreene Callahan and NetGalley for the opportunity to review The House of Starlight & Shadow.

This book is a whirlwind of action and adventure. I honestly felt a little disoriented at times when I was trying to figure out what was going on. The POV of the story frequently shifts, sometimes in the middle of chapters. I would have like to see subheadings with the POV characters' names to help streamline the reading.

While this book was categorized as having romance, I didn't really get that at all. It feels more like "unlikely friends," than any romantic trope. There's also found family, which I really enjoyed experiencing with several of the side characters.

I had a hard time picturing some of the characters and would have liked to see more physical descriptions, or even be reminded of physical characteristics. It was a little difficult to picture them because of this.

The world-building is fascinating! I definitely wanted to know more about the world, but the pace of the story didn't allow much for it. I think this book is probably the start of a series, as the ending leaves a lot of loose ends to be tied up at a later point.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I am going to try to write a review of Coreene Callahan’s newest book without any spoilers. I have read and enjoyed all of Callahan’s books, but “The House of Starlight and Shadow” is by far her best book yet. Callahan always writes strong female characters —strong-willed, self-reliant, and self-confidant— along with male characters who respect women, which is one of the reasons I really like her books. Truly and Westvane are no exceptions as they each seem to respect each other. In the book, Truly is just coming into her own, finding out who she is, and she handles it with confidence. From beginning to end, “The House of Starlight and Shadow” is non-stop action and story. In fact, it is so good that I have read it twice already.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The synopsis of the book sounded amazingly intriguing but unfortunately, I felt like it was missing something.

We follow Truly into her life altering journey. We have other worlds, legacies, and I difficult background for our main character. Truly and Westvane chemistry and bickering was a highlight for me. I adored their interactions through the story, and it was a fast-paced book until half of it. However, it kept me hooked until the very end.

I felt like the story was missing a little more world-building and character development that I hope will happen in the sequel. I’ll definitely read the sequel because overall it was a pleasant read and I enjoyed the story and I’m curious to know what it is to come.

Thank you, NetGalley & the publisher, for approving me to read this arc and write this review

Truly is a P.I that inherits a house from her parents. When stepping into her home she manages to unlock more than just one door in the process. This leads to the Wendigo escaping and Truly finding out she is the new "Door Master". Lyonesse the queen of another world sends Westvane to capture the Wendigo and kill/bring back Truly. Now Westvane is of mixed race and that is frowned upon. Living his whole life in isolation and caged he takes the queens task in hopes of freedom.

Loved the characters introduced in the first book. Minus Lyonesse she annoyed the piss out of me. The banter between Truly, Westvane, and Montrose kept me giggling. Then you get introduced to Earl and that's a whole different little giggle fest. I would love to see more of him. There is like the major confidence growth throughout the book and I loved that Truly always stood for what she

First of all, I would like to say thank you to the author and Net Galley for the ARC.

While I managed to finish the book, I feel it will be unlikely that I will be reaching for the next installment. The plot idea was excellent, but I feel like the execution was not carried out well. I also struggled with the changing perspectives throughout the novel, especially when the characters lacked descriptions. I really enjoyed the MC and FMC's chemistry, but it was not enough for me to want to find out how their story continues in the next instalment.
I am sure other reviewers found it much more up their alley and I know they will be ready to pick up the next one, but I won't be.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
