Hi, I'm Liz Fielding, and I'm a best selling contemporary romance author with more than 15 million books in print and Katie Fforde wrote, when honouring me with the Romantic Novelists' Association's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019 said - "Liz Fielding's books, with their warmth, humour and emotion, have charmed millions of readers. She is a true star of the romantic fiction genre..."

And now I've turned to a life of crime with my first cozy mystery. Murder Among the Roses, published on 18 April 2023 - of which Katie Fforde also said, "I was gripped from beginning to end..."

Reading is a big part of my life. I love witty, contemporary romances, not too much sex,, Women's fiction by the likes of Fiona Harper, Julie Cohen, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie and Barbara O'Neal. And I love crime fiction that isn't too gory, or focussed on clue hunting, but is big on character.

My best loved series at the moment are the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths, The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the Libby Sarjeant Mysteries by Lesley Cookman. I've just read the first in the Georgina Drake crime series from Kate Hardy and looking forward to the next.

This was an enjoyable enough story with a kind-hearted hero but the plot hinges on a deception cooked up by the heroine. Bron, the heroine, spends the majority of the story pretending to be her self-centered sister Brooke in order to make a little girl happy. During the course of the story Bron falls in love with the little girl's daddy but is reluctant to spill the beans about her identity fearing that she'll lose her hunk forever. This is the major source of conflict between the two and it really dragged on too long for my tastes.

Sorry this one of LF’s earlier books and whilst entertaining and well written - it is incredibly dates. I found the premise altogether bizarre and lacking in credibility - but I still enjoyed it - mostly.

The weak link in this book is the threat by the professor to have Brooke thrown out of college if she breathed a word about his involvement in her pregnancy.

Even in 1999, he had far more to fear than she did. He didn’t have the power to throw her out of university without due cause and a very protracted procedure. On the other hand, the first word of a professor violating academic guidelines and having an affair with one of his students would result in an instant suspension pending an investigation and at worse - loss of his position at the university. The idea that he’d jeapordise her first and risk his career just doesn’t hold water.

I’m still giving it 4 stars because Alf is a master of her genre and is worth reading regardless of the plot flaws.
