You’re holding the book that sold 15 million copies worldwide and pioneered self-help as a genre, the book that changed how businesses run and people operate in their everyday relationships, and the book that transformed salesmanship and public speaking. You’re holding How to Win Friends and Influence People.
The book in your hand distills all of Carnegie’s vast knowledge of human relations into simple bullet points and short-story summaries, capturing all of the engaging tales Carnegie tells in one or two pages per chapter.
It begins with a unit on the three principles Carnegie promises will change your professional interactions, continues into six ways to make people like you, and then progresses into the more difficult and uncomfortable realm of human thinking: confrontations. Carnegie offers twelve ways to win people over without arguing, and then nine ways to change people--improve their work ethic and treatment of others, or simply facilitate their development of a certain skill--without offending them.
In this review, each of Carnegie’s chapters boils down to one or two easy-read pages with a high-level and then a more detailed chapter summary. For those who don’t even have time for paragraphs, each chapter includes detailed “Key Takeaway” bullets with Carnegie’s main points. The book ends with brief examples of how Carnegie suggests you apply his strategies to business letters and your marriage.
If you’ve always wanted to read Carnegie’s classic but simply don’t have the time, this professional guide maintains enough original humor and style to make the enjoyment worth your time. Hear about George Washington’s fantasy nickname; the challenge that kept Roosevelt from disappearing into obscurity; and the little boy, a trespasser-turned-knight, who defended his neighbor’s front lawn with a burning-hot iron. Personalities weird and tragic rise from Carnegie’s research, and even if you already know how to win friends, you’ll meet inspiring people in these pages who will influence you for a lifetime.

Great number of historical figures have shown that the people part is the most important aspect of leadership and management. This book tries to find ample generalisations from the qualities they have exhibited. What would have helped a novice people person better are specific situations and statements that address the most common daily use cases in becoming a better peoples guy. Nevertheless, the book has been built on sound principles that get you going in the right direction.
I love the book for its writing style. The stroytelling is top-notch and it supports the argument very well. Personally I think the principles are a little dated. Some of them still hold, though.
