The Three-Year Itch

Rate this book
Trouble always comes in threes...

And it had been three years since Abbie had married Grey Lockwood. Three blissful years. She'd had it all: a glamorous, jet-setting career, a beautiful home and, best of all, a loving husband to come home to. Her friends had always teased her that they would never leave a man as devilishly sexy as Grey on his own for a second, but she had thought their marriage was based on trust. Had she left Grey alone once too often? He no longer seemed satisfied with a part-time lover. He wanted a full-time wife--any wife!

Hi, I'm Liz Fielding, and I'm a best selling contemporary romance author with more than 15 million books in print and Katie Fforde wrote, when honouring me with the Romantic Novelists' Association's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2019 said - "Liz Fielding's books, with their warmth, humour and emotion, have charmed millions of readers. She is a true star of the romantic fiction genre..."

And now I've turned to a life of crime with my first cozy mystery. Murder Among the Roses, published on 18 April 2023 - of which Katie Fforde also said, "I was gripped from beginning to end..."

Reading is a big part of my life. I love witty, contemporary romances, not too much sex,, Women's fiction by the likes of Fiona Harper, Julie Cohen, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jennifer Crusie and Barbara O'Neal. And I love crime fiction that isn't too gory, or focussed on clue hunting, but is big on character.

My best loved series at the moment are the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths, The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the Libby Sarjeant Mysteries by Lesley Cookman. I've just read the first in the Georgina Drake crime series from Kate Hardy and looking forward to the next.

Disappointing. The underlying premise gave it the potential to be angst-y but the delivery failed to wow.

Premise: She’s a jet-setting photojournalist with a husband who’s just as busy with his law profession. They still manage to set fireworks in bed however after one encounter, she broaches topic of children and the guy outright rejects it because her demanding career wouldn’t allow her settle down with a baby any time soon. (Okay….that’s a fair observation. Women are still the ones with a uterus after all.) Shortly afterwards, she sees him in park talking familiarly to a woman with a baby and her insecurity shows. She goes home to check on credit cards and lo and behold! While she was abroad, he had been going to places when he was supposedly at work.

Now, the dumb part: instead of confronting the guy and demanding explanations, she just ups and leaves. Martyr-like. That the guy EVEN follows her and begs for her to come back should have clued her in on his emotional side but noooooo… she insists on being the wronged woman.

But what really bugged me about the book was the writing. Especially the part the H/h were caught snowbound in the cottage. Everything was so meticulously explained; all details dwelled upon; all outcomes foreshadowed – most especially the unnecessary ones. Ugh! It was just tedious. Talk about Chekov’s gun….

So, nope. Pass this book. There are other good books from this author.

I think this is one of her early books and I found the female character too stupid to live! The male character was no prize either! So I skimmed the book and read the happy ending. I will put this one up for sale or donate it.
