I read this book a long time ago and it’s a book that you’ll never forget. I’ll read something else and this is the book that I can never get over. It’s a story of love, a love that is heart wrenching and tragic but ultimately will over come anything thrown at it. It’s a must read if you can find it. I have a copy but it’s a little worn out from rereading it numerous times (that’s how much I loved it but be prepared to cry a little).☺️
Read this first as a school girl and it blew me away...went back and revisited the book again as an adult and apart from a few odd details, I found it to have the same effect on me. It's been years since and i still have the same feelings for it. The H and h are teenage sweethearts, and crazy about each other. The h has a precarious situation at home and one evening she's caught alone by her stepfather who brutally assaults her and rapes her. The H is out of town that day, and the h escapes and goes for for help to a father figure friend who's a pharmacist or some sort of medical professional, I think. She's in a very bad shape. Turns out she'd just found out that she was pregnant with the H's baby when this happened. She doesn't want the H to know anything about all this, fearing that he would kill the stepfather and ruin his life, so ahe cuts off all ties without an explanation. I can't remember how the H is convinced that she's abandoned him but eventually he is, and leaves town. It's been years and he's now a successful documentary film maker (or something similar) The town is having some sort of celebrations and want the famous son to cover it. He's back and bumps into the h who is now a mom. The H discovers his son, and is livid with the h for keeping this secret from him. The son is very annoyed as well. Eventually the doctor friend lets on to the H what happened and why the h shielded him and why she had to keep him away from his son. The story after that is how they both make their way back to each other, while she's still battling severe trauma from the event.
I'm not very fond of books with this theme, but even then I couldn't help loving it. The poignancy of the h comes across beautifully, as does the feeling of bereavement and anger from the H in the first half, and then the extreme care he takes in helping her recover and learn to accept physical closeness again. It's definitely not an easy or light read. Be prepared to shed a few tears as well, but well worth it in the end. PS- Apologies for the missing details.
