They married for money neither of them wanted. From the moment Frank Corey stepped into her dilapidated Cape Cod house, Penny Harris was confused. Was he devil or hero, gangster or lawyer?
But after months of hiding out to evade her money hungry family, the five-foot-ten heiress was ready for some help. Over bowls of canned soup, Penny gradually fell in love with the homely (or was he handsome?) demanding lawyer.
Frank offered advice, protection--even marriage--to his "little love." But forty million dollars threatened to keep them apart.

“Hidden Treasures” is the story of Penny and Frank.
Heroine is a young heiress on the run from her money grabbing family- living in poverty. She meets the hero and his daughter by chance, when a fire makes them her neighbor. She instantly bonds with the daughter, but the hero remains skeptical, despite them sharing kisses. Anyways, the plot proceeds to the heroine and hero getting pretend married when her family tries to take over her heritage. The heros family is great but he is.. very very suspicious. The heroine runs away twice in the book to suffer in poverty because he’s really mean to her. I’d have been fine with it if the duration wasn’t months and she didn’t leave his daughter alone. I honestly found the thing a bit absurd- along with everyone calling the hero ugly as he was injured in war.
Good one time read with some very stupid elements.
RE Hidden Treasures - EG brings us another campy romance full of banter and snark, but the undertone is bit more serious in this one. The h (who is close to 6ft tall and built like a Valkyrie) is a wealthy heiress hiding out in a Massachusetts cranberry bog until her 21st birthday.
She has an unscrupulous "Uncle" ( a distant cousin from her dead mum's side,) who wants control of the 40 million dollar inheritance her grandfather left her in the form of a charitable foundation - the h found out the uncle has been embezzling from it for three years while hacking into the foundations computers. He plans to force her to marry his bully of an oldest son and force the h to sign control over to him, while she is suitably abused and eventually murdered of course.
The h isn't in agreement with that plan, so in a manner reminiscent of Amanda Carpenter's Great Escape, the h takes her self off to various locations in MA doing a variety of jobs to hide out until she can take control in her own right. She winds up in the Great Salt Marsh area of Cape Cod and it there she meets the H and his small plot moppet daughter who decides the h will make an excellent new mother. The H is rather surly and a bit rude, he is a Vietnam Vet whose wife abandoned him and his child for another man when he came back severely facially disfigured from the war.
They manage to insinuate themselves into the h's life, (the H is a lawyer,) while hiding out from drug dealers after they burnt down his house. That situation is quickly resolved but then the H finds out who the h is and shows her an article where the "uncle" is planning to dissolve the charitable foundation and steal all the money.
The H's father is also a very high powered lawyer and the whole family decides to save the h. The H proposes to the h because if she marries she gets control of her inheritance right away and can kick the 'uncle' out. But the H hates the fact that she has all that money and the h is in love but thinks the H doesn't like her, even tho there are lots of passionate kisses.
They marry and the H plans on avoiding the h until the big shareholder meeting where the h will put herself in charge and the h gets in a snit and goes camping until the meeting. The H gets a little nuts searching for the h and they have a big argument when she returns.
The meeting goes as planned with the h taking over and giving all the money to a cancer research foundation. The man the uncle wanted the h to marry winds up hitting her and the H gets into a big brawl with the skeevy relatives and then tells the h to get an annulment.
The h takes off again and when we next hear of her, she has been hit by a car while saving a child in another small town. She had to pawn her big diamond engagement ring because she couldn't find a job and had no money.
The H has been missing her by this point and his daughter misses her "mum", so they rescue the h from poverty and the hospital. Then the H's mother decides that the marriage is cursed until they marry in a proper church. They still haven't managed to consummate the marriage yet, so they do the church wedding and finally make it to bed.
The H isn't so wary of other people's startes at him anymore since the h doesn't care how he looks and actually thinks he is handsome. The H is happy the h gave away all the money and that they love each other and the h is happy she has the H and a potential tribe of children for the HEA.
This one is the usual EG romp, the story was fast and the H's remorse for trying to dump the h was genuine - she made him feel normal again and he fell in love with her, but thought she only married him for the money- until she gave it all away.
If you like EG, you will like this one and the various slap stick comedy scenes are amusing. This isn't the funniest EG ever wrote, but it was nice and a good way to spend a few hours.

In this story, Penny (Penelope) is an escapee from what many would feel was an ideal existence. She was raised as a wealthy heiress, set to be the sole heir to her grandfather's millions.
When our story opens, she is living in a backwater area harvesting cranberries for a living. She is the inadvertent hostess to a precocious child, who asks her to be a pretend mommy.
Meeting the father is an experience in conflict, as he is aggravating and irritating, but obviously loves his daughter.
This is a romance which deals with real human issues, in a realistic way. Worth reading.
The hardest part to accept is how anyone could have 40 million dollars and give it all away when they themselves are wearing ragged clothes and malnutritioned.
Noteworthy expressions:
Penny agreed with her husband Frank regarding her father-in-law legally representing her: Look at that…He’s a monster shark, getting ready to bite somebody. Lord, I’m glad he’s on my side!
Penny’s father-in-law was encouraging her to keep going at the board meeting: You can and you will. You swallowed the lion, why gag on the mouse?
