Seeing the Unseen: A Daily Dose of Eternal Perspective

Rate this book
Reach through the fog of this life…and see the world beyond.

From the author of the bestselling book Heaven, here are 60 meditations that will inspire you to live each day with an eternal perspective.

Spiritually speaking, we live in the Country of the Blind. Sin has blinded us to the truth about God and Heaven, both of which are real yet unseen. But just as the physically blind must accept by faith there are stars in the sky, we must remind ourselves what Scripture tells us about eternal realities.

In daily doses, author Randy Alcorn offers insights on the Christian life along with Scriptures and inspirational quotes that can transform the way you think and live today.

It’s time to open your eyes—and see the unseen.

Randy Alcorn is the founder of Eternal Perspective Ministries (EPM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching biblical truth and drawing attention to the needy and how to help them. EPM exists to meet the needs of the unreached, unfed, unborn, uneducated, unreconciled and unsupported people around the world.

"My ministry focus is communicating the strategic importance of using our earthly time, money, possessions and opportunities to invest in need-meeting ministries that count for eternity," Alcorn says. "I do that by trying to analyze, teach and apply the implications of Christian truth."

Before starting EPM in 1990, Alcorn co-pastored for thirteen years Good Shepherd Community Church outside Gresham, Oregon. He has ministered in many countries, including China, and is a popular teacher and conference speaker. Randy has taught on the part-time faculties of Western Seminary and Multnomah University, both in Portland, Oregon.

He has written numerous articles for magazines such as Discipleship Journal, Moody, Leadership, New Man, and The Christian Reader. He produces the quarterly issues-oriented magazine Eternal Perspectives, and has been a guest on more than 650 radio and television programs including Focus on the Family, Family Life Today, The Bible Answer Man, Revive Our Hearts, Truths that Transform and Faith Under Fire.

Alcorn resides in Gresham, Oregon with his wife, Nanci. The Alcorns have two married daughters, Karina and Angela.

Randy and Nanci are the proud grandparents of five grandsons. Randy enjoys hanging out with his family, biking, tennis, research and reading.

This book was a bit of a challenge to me. Normally I like Randy Alcorn, and don't get me wrong, I did here too, but it still felt off to me somehow. Maybe it's my questioning of some of the pet peeves of Western and American Christianity I don't feel is entirely biblical at times. Note: I mean cultural issues, not theological ones. I am mostly evangelical/Reformed (if I can ever understand the term "Reformed" enough to decide which I am) ;).

The other problem I had was that Alcorn in most of his books is more into theological discussions, while here he was basically giving us short little sermonettes, with very little introspection about any issues. What if someone makes a mistake? What about the nuances of non-doctrinal issues? What if one is struggling. Alcorn seems to communicate a message almost of saying "suck it up and serve God". Not as good by far as his books on Heaven and If God Is Good.

Despite the above, I did enjoy the reminders that Alcorn gives readers to serve God, and to think of the future. I think he has hit the nail on the head that we think too much entirely of the here and now, but not nearly enough of our eternal home in Heaven, if we know Christ.

So the above and other reminders are good and edified me muchly, but at the same time, the quality wasn't as good as his other books, so it isn't quite as good as said books. It was a good read with my daily devotions though.

I won this book through a GoodReads Giveaway, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it. I had mixed feelings about this book when I finished reading it. Not being a Christian myself, I enjoy reading perspectives on all religions and using them to help clarify my own world view.

I think this would be a great daily "journal entry" reminder for Christians who share the author's beliefs. The segments are short and sweet and are interspersed both with quotes from scripture and quotes from famous world leaders, movers, and shakers.

I did feel that most of the opinions were directed specifically at those people sharing this perspective. If you don't share these opinions, therefore, venture into this book with an open mind.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The book came at the perfect time! This short book offers 60 devotionals that remind us to set our affections on eternal things... the only things that will matter when we die. I love that Alcorn presents various Scriptures and also quotes from famous Christian authors, preachers, theologians, etc. I was encouraged through the reading of this book and plan to pass it along to a family member. Thanks, Randy!

Book Review: Seeing The Unseen: A Daily Dose Of Eternal Perspective
By: Randy Alcorn

Great read for all Christians and believers of Jesus Christ & the heavenly father. The scripture interpretations are easy to understand and follow. The author, Randy Alcorn makes great sense with his view points. A great eye opener for the spiritually in tune :-) This book also brings about great hope and a new perspective to those new to the light of Jesus Christ.

Keep your eyes on things above

Great book! I read this as a daily devotional. It definitely served its purpose for me: keeping my eyes on my heavenly home and not on things that will pass away. I liked the links at the end of each reading leading to Randy's blog post touching on the same subject as the book chapter.

Great devotional

Really enjoyed this devotional! Another exceptional book by Randy Alcorn. (I highly recommend Heaven and his fictional series on heaven, gives you great insights.) But back to this devotion, it truly is a daily dose of eternal perspective that includes scripture to back up what is written along with quotes from other authors and speakers.

time well spent

Pushes, gives ideas. What I needed. Helps to expand my narrow focus and refocus on what is really important. The recommended reading something end of the chapter were also very insightful, and worth the extra time.

Mom died four years ago today. I kept reading until the last page as my heart was filled with blessing and this day turned around. This was a great way to fill the day and I am grateful for mom’s faith in Christ and my own faith in Christ.

This book has some important concepts, but Alcorn tends to describe deep concepts with uninspired writing (think John Eldredge), and he always brings things back to a Christian platitude.

A must read for all

This book is a great resource for the Christian who wants to meditate on and learn more about how to live life in the here and now to better glorify God! It is also a good resource for the unbeliever who is searching for answers about how to know God and what he expects of us! Highly recommend reading and implementing what Randy writes about. Just remember to fact check what he says with the word of God, the Bible, so you know for sure what it says!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wish there was more. The topics were relevant and sometimes convicting. Although the book has ended, I plan to revisit the EPM website to read more articles.

Could not finish.

I tried to keep reading but could not.I have enjoyed Mr. Acorns fiction books. But as I am in a different place in my walk with Christ I couldn't keep reading this devotional. God is Good always,God is love Always. He wants us to have an abundant life He loves all of us unconditionally. He doesn't give us sickness for any reason. How can we believe God for healing, provision, protection, etc if we think He caused our circumstance and if He gave us poverty, sickness, accidents then why are we trying to fix it all and avoid it all. So I would not recommend this book. I read up to day 45 .
