Few things I didn't care for that the "hero" did. First off I wouldn't call him much of a hero. He's very harsh and at times mean to Alexandra. She just takes it and accepts it. Look, I get that his "father" was a meanie to him but does that mean he can't say he's sorry for being an ass?? What about the fact that he not only hooked up with that bitch, Charlotte, a time or two after dismissing her. But then he had the gall to have a different courtesan each night after she fled his home cause he's a complete tool. Oh and he never even said I love you to her. WTF? That being said it was still a decent book. I'd rather accept it and move on. Hope she writes about Olivia and Jack, I'd read that.
An impoverished spinster Alexandra is seduced by hardened rake of a Duke, Stephen. Both characters have toxic parents. She gets prego after they do the deed. Alexandra is used to dealing with her surly drunkard father, so she unwittingly falls for the bad boy duke, angsty back and forth. Dream lover turns into a nightmare a22h0le at a time he should have been tender. She is physically and emotionally abandoned. I felt so bad for Alexandra. Stephen is hooking up with whores and mistresses while they are apart. During this time he is all around NASTY. I would have at least liked to see him get kicked in jimmy by a horse or maybe a broken leg . I get that his behavior was explained as severe deprivation/ abuse in childhood but given he had loving influences as well I found it hard to believe he would not even consider the loving choice until Alexi browbeats him. But he was hallucinating the old mean Duke in the corner sneering or berating him for most of the book. So maybe it was an ongoing trauma for Stephen. Overall really liked this book in the series, high drama, complex personalities and good side characters.

In this case the pride levels are at an all-time high and were major flaws in these characters. I despise spineless heroines disguised as strong woman. Brenda Joyce went to extremes to show us just how "strong" Alexandra was for her family, but failed to make her enduring when she really needed to be. Yes, she made major scarifies, but for someone with such strength she sure gave into our hero easily. She crumbled in front of him numerous times when I really wanted her to smack him in the face and move on. She refused help when it would literally save her life (there's that pride), but she jumped at the chance to bang him every time she got upset. Mixed signals much?
The biggest issue I had with this book was, there was ZERO chemistry between these two. The romance, the tension the passion was nonexistent. Very disappointed in this book.
First off I didn’t care for the H’s mother’s love story used as commercial breaks. It just made me skim about 100 pages. Write a novella instead and trim this baby of about 100 pages. Second there wasn’t enough together time for the couple in the second half. The H who is a Duke pursues the h for a mistress. He gets mad when he finally has her and discovered she’s a virgin— wth he’s definitely not a mafia man or an alpha. He is an asshole to her afterwards but it didn’t stop him from screwing her brains out first. Richey rich then causes the h to be thrown out of her house and to live In poverty. He’s supposedly a humanitarian saving orphans and building hospitals. Color me skeptical…. After all Of his friends and family browbeat him he finally comes to his senses…. But first enter the fmcs first love to Cause another split.
Another winner for me! 10* I love the whole story, ...I read the whole word, each one by one...until the last page and still requesting more* Very touching, very genuine This is a real Duke for me...high class people-haughty mogul Hero Finish it in 2 days, with an big wow* I love this book I shall choose another Brenda Joyce
First of, why the fuck is there a random rancher in a regency and why do I have to read about him and the mom??? It made me skip like 100 pages. I don’t want a farmer’s love story????
Next, every single person in this book sucked. And some, fucking stupid too. The dad, the sisters, the peerage, the fucking H. Far out. And did he have to fuck 5 randos??? That made this romance book thoroughly UNROMANTIC. Look, you could have just said he was down in the dumps & I would have believed he was sad - he didnt have to fuck 5 chicks.
The only reason this got the half star is because the writing, while not great, wasnt horrid. Nor stupidly silly and non-contextual and the scene building still adhered someone to the times. For me, 1 stars are for the style you find with Dare, Scott etc. Not what I like.
But I have no idea why this author gets grouped in with McNaught. That is insanity. She is nowhere near the caliber. Maybe its cause of her nutso plots….but the difference is, McNaught takes the time to worldbuild. And her characterisation is actually solid, unlike books like this that rely on dialogue. And McNaught’s books are romantic. They have unwavering Heroes. You feel the love papillate off the pages.
With this book all I can think off is the five chicks he fucked =)))) bet he wont be telling the missus about that.
Seriously, I couldn’t put this book down. I was hooked from the very first word. Alexandra gives up the love of her life to fulfill a vow she made to her mother. While I don’t believe her mother ever intended for her to put her life on hold, that’s exactly what she does to take care of her two younger sisters and increasingly drunk and belligerant father. Unable to afford the basic things that the ladies of her class takes for granted, Alexandra considers marrying a much older Squire in order to provide financially for her family. But when the Squire invites her family to a ball, she meets and falls head over heels for Stephen Mowbray, the Duke of Clarewood.
Alexandra is duty bound. She is a woman of her word and takes her responsibilities seriously. But she is also unfailingly kind and is unwilling to accept handouts or charity. Even when faced with viscious and untrue gossip, Alexandra holds her head up high and refuses to let anyone see her sweat. The girl is made of some strong stuff and has a will of steel.
Stephen Mowbray is your typical tall dark and handsome duke though his story is a little unusual. He is the bastard son of Sir Rex de Warrene, but was raised by Tom Mowbray the Duke of Clarewood as his own. But the Duke always resented the fact that he could never have a child of his own and treated Stephen with contempt. Mirroring his Father, Stephen is cold, calculating, and always gets what he wants without making promises in return. Forunately Stephen isn’t all hard. His close cousins and half brothers and sisters showed him kindness and love throughout his life, and his birth father always lets him know that he is proud of him. Stephen does great things for the poor and downtrodden, and always treats his family well.
The romance between these two was spellbinding. Of course riddled with problems and misunderstandings. There were a few times that Stephen really pissed me off. I didn’t like that he felt so entitled without any thought of the consequences for others. And Alexandra exasperated me when she wouldn’t take the time to explain herself. She’d just accept his fury and run off without even trying to make him understand her. But even so, the story was captivating and I just had to know what was going to happen.
Joyce did a great job with this book. I loved meeting the de Warrene clan and the love between Stephen and Alexandra could not be denied. Depsite the gossip, the lies, and the obstacles, these two finally managed to get it right. My only complaint is that Joyce really used the word dismayed A LOT! OMG everybody was dismayed all the time! Other than that, great book and I will be getting the other de Warrene titles.
I loved this and couldn't stop reading it. It shouldn't be a surprise because it borrows from the plot of The Masquerade, another story from the deWarenne Dynasty, that is one of my favourite romances of all time. Both stories operate on this turn of events: the hero is a rich dude who thinks he can make the poor gentry woman his mistress. However, he believes the heroine is playing him and the heroine cannot tell him the truth and be upfront for Reasons but there's one significant change that An Impossible Attraction takes at this critical fork in the road, and that's putting the heroine through lots of grief and humiliation before she gets her happily ever after.
Alexandra Bolton is down on her luck. She is once again about to sacrifice her personal happiness in order to put a roof over her alcoholic father and younger sisters' heads. On the brink of marrying a nice squire she has no romantic feelings for, she catches the eye of the Duke of Clarewood one night at a ball. Stephen is the offspring of Sir Rex and Julia, which is why Clarewood is part of the deWarrenne Dynasty.
Just imagine The Masquerade but Ty decided to kick out Lizzie. Alexandra should annoy the reader because she is that selfless heroine with more virtue up her backside than practical intellect. She receives countless offers when she is kicked out of home to leave the London gutter but nope. She's making a stand. Alexandra basically decided she'd rather suffer in silence like a martyr than let Stephane think she was an opportunist.
However, I found it so fascinating because Joyce did not let Alexandra go down gently. You know that scene in Disney's Cinderella when her stepsisters rip her dress? That's kind of what I felt like Alexandra went through for the last half of the story. At one point, she falls down in London's East Side right in front of a popular debutante rumoured to marry Stephen, and not only does Stephen appear on the scene but he also sees her hurl her breakfast on the street a few short minutes after. AND THEN when Owen arrives. I really could not.
An Impossible Attraction is a great addition to the deWarrenne Dynasty and is certainly how I feel about the story!
1. Yes. The hero cheated. He dumped his mistress when he saw the heroine. Then when he felt that the heroine had tried to entrap him by giving him her virginity he dumped the heroine and called old mistress back for two days.
2. At the end when he thinks the heroine’s old love is back he again cheats with prostitutes. One has to see this in context of the time it is set in.
Next point - The fact that so many people had to tell him to go and see the heroine before he went disgusted me. Till …. I understood how he was brought up. He was brought up by his mother’s husband. The man was extremely cruel and violent. Hero was totally scarred by this.
He almost appeared brainless. Unfeeling. Stupid. He took her virginity. Threw her out.
When he was told she had been thrown out of her father’s house he kept on living normally without remorse.
But after reading the whole story I realised that he was a child in a man’s body. A very mentally scarred man.
He pursued the heroine relentlessly. Sending her flowers. Gifting her a diamond bracelet and a horse. But the moment he slept with her and found she was a virgin he gave her a check. He kicked her out and forgot about her.
My understanding is that he felt guilty and responsible but he could not do the honourable thing. So rather than maturely sitting and talking it out with her he sent her away.
He heard she was thrown out of her father’s house. He heard!!! But he did nothing!!! This is one aspect I feel author should have handled so hero comes out looking human.
So basically he was extremely flawed. He flew into cold near violent rages that scared the heroine.
The story- Heroine breaks off engagement when her mother dies. Someone has to bring up her two young sisters. Father is a drunkard and a gambler. They’re surviving on money the heroine earns by mending clothes. A prosperous farmer offers for her. She indicates she’s amenable to the proposal. He takes her to a grand ball thrown by the De Warennes.
The heroine and her sisters are shunned by the women. Catty malicious whispering. That she was jilted by fiancé . Her father is a drunk. She starts feeling faint. Clutches at something. It’s the hero. He supports her to a chair. He has grown up surrounded by whispers. Is a very wealthy man. One of the wealthiest. Philanthropist. Eligible bachelor. He takes one look at heroine and falls in lust.
He starts sending her flowers and jewellery from the next day.
Heroine realises she can’t marry farmer when she goes to return hero’s jewellery and he kisses her.
She agrees to be his mistress. But when he realises she’s a virgin he decides she’s trying to trap him and kicks her out.
Her father kicks her out too.
A month later the hero finds her. She’s pregnant though she doesn’t tell him but he knows. He brings her home. Affair begins. Old lover returns. Old lover is a widower now. He still wants heroine. Hero realises he wants her as wife. The end.
Another knight in shining armor DeWarrene hero story :D
Alexandra is devoted to her family as she takes it up to herself to care for her younger sisters and drunk father. She works as a seamstress in order to support them. Stephen, the Duke of Clarewood and Rex DeWarrene's own son, unlike the ton, admires that and disapproves of the disdain and untruthful gossip from his circles.
There is another side story of the dowager duchess of Clarewood, Stephen's mother, finding her own Happy ending. In The Perfect Bride, she was Rex's fiance before she cheated on him with Tom Mowbray, the late Duke of Clarewood who raised Stephen as his own. I despised her then. I thought I wouldn't like her because of the past hostility and wrongdoing towards Rex, but she played a great part in this story in reconciling Alexandra and Stephen.
My arrangement of the wonderful books of this series by descending order from most favorite to least: 1️⃣ The Masquerade ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (A tear-jerker if you're in for an "I've loved you for years" trope with a selfless heroine and a dashing, refined hero) 2️⃣ A Lady At Last ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (CLIFF... the pirate/privateer dashing rogue.. need I say more? + The guardian/ward trope is not my typical go-to, but it was so beautifully written and felt here) 3️⃣ The Game ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (set in the Golden Age during the reign of Elizabeth I and with the presence of historical figures, a wonderful, angsty love story was born) 4️⃣ An Impossible Attraction ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Being Rex's own son, the hero was in all means a knight in shining armor) 5️⃣ Promise of the Rose ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Quite different from his father in The Conqueror, Stephen was also guarded because of his tough childhood at court ... major misunderstandings happen along the way) 6️⃣ The Prize ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Though the hero was focused on his revenge, the last scenes in the book made it stand out) 7️⃣ The Conqueror ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (loved this work. It was my first by Brenda... I remember finishing the book in two days - I wished Rolfe were a bit more understanding, but that was during the times of William the Conqueror, so that's expected) 8️⃣ The Perfect Bride ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (a sweet, slow story of a recluse, war hero and a vulnerable, refined heroine) 9️⃣ The Stolen Bride ⭐⭐⭐ (a bit on the awkward side ) 🔟 A Dangerous Love ⭐⭐ (this was the book I wanted to read most and yet, liked the least; the main characters were both mule-headed and quite snobbish)
I really enjoyed this story. It was not the typical historical romance but the two characters grabbed my interest as soon as started reading. Stephen Mowbray, the Duke of Clarewood, is not the typical hero, but is the illegitimate son of Sir Rex de Warenne (so anyone who has read any of the previous de Warenne Dynasty series or specifically A Lady at Last is probably programmed to like him because of the family connection). Stephen Mowbray was raised by the Duke of Clarewood who was cold and heartless, in fact even on his death bed he could not admit or even say that he was proud of his son, he only had Stephen promise to take care of Clarewood/duchy. His exact words were “Clarewood is everything….Clarewood is your duty.” Stephen, having never still felt like he truly was a de Warenne, still sought out the approval of his father, the Duke even fifteen years after his death. He made his life about the duchy and for years had coldly seeking out a wife but could not find any interest in a debutante. However, one night at the birthday party of his half-sister, our heroine Alexandra Bolton falls into his arms and piques his interest as she clearly not recently graduate of the schoolroom. However, his interest in Alex was far from honorable and needless to say their journey to happily ever after was extremely bumpy. Yet these two characters who had allowed promises they made to their dying parents to color their decisions and make their lives less than happy, do find happiness with each other in the end
The de Warenne legacy continue with Stephen Mowbray and Alexandra Bolton's tempestuous and passionate love in An Impossible Attraction.
As the Duke of Clarewood, Stephen Mowbray is a powerful and arrogant man who is used to getting what he wants. In sharp contrast is Alexandra Bolton, an impoverished but proud woman who once sacrificed true love to care for her family. The instant they meet there is no denying the immediate and powerful attraction between them. For Alexandra it is an impossible attraction because she is not in his league and cannot expect marriage, while for Stephen it is an attraction he intends to pursue despite dishonorable intent.
Thus, the pursuit and seduction begin, and eventually the surrender. What begins as an improper arrangement between them, awakens old passions and feelings within Alexandra and touches emotions Stephen never knew he could feel. However, misunderstandings and secrets threaten their love and it is trust that they need to find before they can find love.
The premise is quite ordinary and predictable, and the setting is restrained. The whole story only takes place in Edgemont Way, Clarewood, and briefly in London but the intensity of emotions shared between Alexandra and Stephen makes up for it. There are many passionate moments whether in love or anger that is both heart-tugging and emotionally evoking.
After one winner and one loser I decided to give Joyce another try. The blurb sounded like an emotional story which is always favourites of mine. I didn't like it as much as The Perfect Bride but it was definitely better than A Dangerous Love.
Clarewood is a hero in the tradition of Joyce's alpha heroes. He is not a bad guy but around the heroine he behaves abominably. He is decided to have Alex has his mistress despite the fact that she is a gentlewoman. She wants to marry well to help her family but between Clarewood's pressure and her attraction to him she eventually bends to his will.
Clarewood seemed to me too marked by his past, he was too arrogant, too hard, too stubborn... He wanted things to be just as he wanted them no matter how bad they might be for Alex. For a while I actually despaired that he would come to his senses... My favourite part was when Alex decided to leave him and all the heartache behind to try to make it on her own. But she eventually falls in his power again. I thought there was much potential for poignancy here but not all was fulfilled as it was such a mismatch the power they each had.
I did like the romance between Clarewood's mother and her beau and was very sorry that there wasn't much about them.
Very very beautiful romance: romantic, not rhetorical, not repetitive, very engaging, never a dull moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He (Stephen) really is a little evil. BUT he change - he evolves to reach the positive final, of course - without haste, the reader is not shocked by the change; I really appreciated the way in which Joyce has made this mutation; in other novels, it seems have changed the book ... But this novel really surprised me, I appreciated the skill of the writer in describing the mutation in the male character . Arid man who thinks he does not know the love. Besides that I also liked how the author described the personality and the suffering of the female character, who have a strong and fighting temperament but this one is undermined by the love for the man who can't correspond her, man that she loved but wrong ... she belive that they can't understand each other... But they are wrong ... of course! 4 stars and 1/5 because I don't like the story of Stephen's mother... boring me when I only whant know the story about Alexandra and Stephen!
I absolutely loved this book! ...and I am so happy because I started this de Warenne Dynsaty series with The Masquerade (and loved it) but all of the other books up until this point had been blah. This one, An Impossible Attraction, is going on my Keeper Shelf. I love Brenda Joyce's style in which her leading lady characters are such sweet, easy-to-love characters. It's not that often that I 'just can't put a book down'... but this was one of them. I felt it was a sweet, light read (no bad guys, no murdering plots, etc) just the story of how these two characters fell in love. There was a secondary romance going on with the hero's mother and a gentleman, but I skimmed over that because I just could not wait to read what would happen next with Alexandra and Stephen :)
3.5 stars, really. It was better than most of the de Warenne books, but not as good as "A Lady at Last". Clarewood(the duke) never tells Alexandra he loves her and that drives me crazy! The hero didn't grovel enough at the end for my liking. There is a sweet secondary romance b/w Clarewood's mother, Julia, and an American man.

3 1/2 stars it would have worked very well for me if every thought in her head was not “i want him i can’t resist” on repeat and then act differently. She allowed herself to be ill treated and was always crying. Even when she stood up for herself, it seemed weak.
