Gabriel is gone.

Roseline is left with questions that refuse answers and only the memory of a man she vows to hunt and kill, but to do so, she must call a truce with her sworn enemy.

After reading Forbidden, Book #1 in this series, I was excited to dig into Reckoning. Though the story had many great moments and I will read the next book to see what happens, there were some things in this book that I considered a let-down after finding book #1 so enjoyable.

The story picks up where the battle at the end of the first book left off. During the aftermath of the battle, Gabriel is kidnapped and Roseline sets off to find him with the help of her friends, both old and new. When the mysterious Malachi enters the picture, Roseline starts to question more about her past, the past of the Immortals and the role that Gabriel plays. Throughout their journey, the battle rages between factions ending with a climactic event and a twist that I certainly didn't see coming.

What I loved:

The end of the book. And I don't mean that facetiously. *grins* I was completely thrown at the end of the book by the unexpected twist. It made me want to see what happens in Book #3.

What I liked:

I liked that the story was fast-paced and thrust you directly into the action. There was much more going on than in the first book and you got to learn more about the past of the Immortals, which I thought was pretty cool. I liked how Nicolae and Roseline formed a truce in order to overcome their common enemies. I like that we got to see a tougher side of Roseline, but...

What I didn't like:

I didn't like that I felt like Roseline's switch was stuck in permanent "I must be a bad-ass" mode. The depth and layers that I loved about her character in the first book I felt were lacking in this book. When other emotions did show, I felt like the moments were fleeting.

I think the thing that I didn't like the most about the book was the point of view in which is was written. Third-person present tense does not work well for me, and since the first book was written in third-person past tense (which is pretty standard), the book didn't flow as well for me as it could have. It felt like the book was trying to be told in a first-person POV where the character telling the story refers to them self using the third person. I noticed in the teaser chapter that this same POV is also used, which confuses me. I think it makes for a harder read because my mind is trying to reconcile how it thinks the story should read versus how the story actually reads.

Overall, the story line was good though I felt the character development throughout the book was a bit weak. The twist at the end made it worth it though, if you can get past how the story reads in the third-person present tense view.

This is the second book of The Arotas Trilogy by Amy Miles. At first, I was super excited because I liked the first book so much. Don’t get me wrong, I liked this one too, just not as much. I get this is like a transition kind of book, but it was kind of slow for my taste. I still enjoyed it though.

In this book, you get to see Roseline and Gabriel grow a little bit more as characters, the same goes with Nicolae. Here, the characters get to have a development a little more profound since it’s some kind of quest. Everyone is trying to figure out the truth, what their destiny truly is. But as they get farther and farther in this discovery, some new threats come along.

About the story:
Ok, well like I said, I really enjoyed the book. It took me a while to finish it since I haven’t had that much time to read. The thing that was kind of a disappointment was the slow pace of the book, but other than that, it was good. We have a major separation here, it was so frustrating, but Amy manages to keep the book mysterious enough to keep you reading. There are new characters, some I liked and some I was super suspicious about (and with good reasons). Like I said, Reckoning is like a transition book, here you get a few more answers about what’s going on… You get to understand a little more the Immortal world and Roseline and Gabriel’s bond.

There’s some action, which was pretty good actually. Here, Roseline is the badass I always knew she was. No body messes with her and the ones she loves. She gets and will get her revenge on everyone who has hurt her in some way or another. She’s a lot more determined in this book. There are some twists I liked, like the explanation of what the Immortals really are (I won’t say much about it) and the end. I wasn’t really expecting it, I mean, sure… I knew something was up, but I wasn’t expecting THAT, so it kind of took me by surprise.

About the characters:
Ok so, since we don’t get to see that much of Gabriel and Roseline as a couple, we get to know them separately, which is good. Even though I already knew a little bit more about Roseline from the first book, here you get to know Gabriel, his point of view, his feelings, his doubts, his strengths, which are not that specific in the first book. He’s the sort of guy who’ll do anything for the girl he loves, even if it means leaving her behind today, to save her later. I love him. He’s sweet and strong and loyal and so many good things, even knowing where he comes from, he’s still good.

Roseline is a awesome badass. I love her. No matter how sad she is, how much pain she has to face, physically and/or emotionally, she will do whatever she has to do to get to the boy she loves. I hope I get to see a lot more of Gabriel and Roseline in the next book, because there was some in the first book, none in the second… it’s time for them to be able to be together, don’t you think? :) She’s honest. If you hadn’t seen that in the first book, you’ll get to see it here. I love that she’s able to keep her feelings straight. She’s not one of those female characters that just because she’s not currently with the boy she loves, she finds “shelter” with another guy. Yes, she’s constantly being comforted by Fane, but she’s not giving him any false hope to what she wants.

Fane… well, I don’t care that much about him. I mean, yes, he’s a true friend to Rose and I appreciate that, BUT to me he’s the other guy, and you know how I think about that ;)

Nicolae… Nicolae… Nicolae! I like him. I like his stubbornness, his strength, his loyal qualities. He has become a really good friend to Roseline.

I can’t wait to continue this story <3

This story just keeps getting better! There are so many twists and turns that this story is taking, yet at the same time everything is slowing being pieced together. The fight scene in this book is epic. Although the amount of grammatical errors in these last two books is shocking!!! At times it's even irritating.

Reckoning is the second installment in the Arotas Trilogy. In the aftermath of the battle in Forbidden, Vladimir has escaped, Lucien and Sorin are dead and a desperate Rose is forced to turn a mortally wounded Gabriel into the thing she hates the most.

Before Gabriel can complete his transformation, they are attacked by a group of monks and despite Rose’s ferocious efforts to save him, Gabriel is kidnapped. Poisoned and weakened as a result of their encounter, Rose is saved when Nicholae’s offers her his blood.

Rose and Nicholae come to an understanding after he voices his desire to end the feud between hunters and immortals once and for all by taking out their true enemy, Vladimir, who has been building an immortal army. She also learns that Gabriel is part of a prophecy and is therefore wanted by many factions.

To keep Sadie and William safe, Rose asks them to return to Chicago and she and Nicholae travel to London’s underbelly in the hopes of finding Fane. They track Fane down at the infamous Torrent, where Rose runs into Davros, one of Vladimir’s right hand men. A bloody fight breaks out in which Rose kills Davros but is severely wounded in the process. Enter Malachi, who congratulates her on her victory and revives her by offering her a drink which turns out to be his blood.

Malachi offers Rose a place to stay and promises to provide some much needed answers. Despite her reservations, she agrees to accompany him as Fane needs time to heal from his injuries. Rose learns that Gabriel isn’t a pawn in the Arotas prophecy - he IS Arotas. Malachi tells her that a war is going on between the Alraes (angels) and Laerah and Gabriel has a crucial role to play. While the Guardians (monks) view Gabriel as a warrior of light, the Elders see him as a Fallen One, a harbinger of death. Only the Prophecy will shed light on who Gabriel truly is. Malachi believes that a copy of the Prophecy is contained in the walls of the caves beneath the Hellfire Club. He agrees to help her to obtain them.

Meanwhile, Gabriel has been undergoing a painful transformation which has left him weakened. The Monks help him and he becomes particularly close to Sias and Enael. When he is well enough, the Monks hand him over to Elias, an Alraes who is to aid him in his training so he can successfully complete three trials before he is ready to embrace his destiny. Gabriel comes to understand that he is a nephlim, the last of his kind. He also learns that Rose was chosen by Vladimir for a reason and it’s no coincidence that he and Rose are bound to each other. Only the Prophecy will reveal the answers.

Who will get to the Prophecy first? What is Malachi and can he be trusted? When Vladimir kidnaps Sadie and William, Rose is forced to return to Brasov to save her friends in an epic showdown. Who will triumph?

I really enjoyed the second installment as it was fast paced. Forbidden was a lot slower in comparison until the last five chapters. A lot of questions were answered in Reckoning, although there is still so much to keep us guessing until the next instalment.

I loved the developing friendship between Rose and Nicholae. Nicholae spent the better part of Forbidden being openly cold and hostile at every opportunity. His character really grows in this book and he proves to be a valuable asset.

Rose was so much more likeable in this installment and proved what a badass she really was in comparison to the victim she was in Forbidden. So much mystery still surrounds her involvement in the prophecy however and that killer twist at the end has left me with an awful sense of foreboding.

I found myself fascinated with Malachi and wished throughout that he was on the level despite my sneaking suspicion to the contrary. I sense he has feelings for Rose though so that may play an important part in the next installment which I’m pleased to say I already have in my possession!

Book Review- Reckoning by Amy Miles

Roseline turned Gabriel to save him but she was attacked and he was taken. She and Nicholae have teamed up to find him. They are searching for answers as to where he was taken. The search leads them to London while there they find Fang and meet an ally of sorts named Malachi. Malachi promises to help and provide answers. He explains that there is a prophesy that mentions her. Her main focus is Gabriel but he is also tied to this prophesy. So, she needs to search for both now.
Gabriel has a role to fulfill and he must pass three trials. He is getting guidance from the most unlikely place. He is trying to learn what he can do to fulfill his destiny. Rose is fighting to save her friends and Gabriel. She must face Vladimir in order to save her friends. When the battle ensues, she finds a betrayal that leaves her where she never believed herself to be. Her destiny has come calling and she will have to be strong.
I loved the first book in this series. So, I was excited to read this one. I was sad to see Gabriel and Rose mostly apart in this installment. However, the author took the time to advance the relationships of Rose, Nicholae, and Fang. They had to get passed their initial feelings and work together. Then Malachi entered the picture. You don’t trust him at all. He is too mysterious. Even though he is helping them, there are doubts thrown his way. I read this part of the book waiting for him to turn on them.
As you read the story, you don’t learn much about the bond between Rose and Gabriel or anything about the prophesy except that everyone is looking for it. That was frustrating. I still am in the dark completely of what is going on.
Then the ending was surprising. Gabriel is faced with his first trial and it is heartbreaking. Rose finds herself where she never thought she would be. I was pretty disgusted with how things ended. I realized it is setting things up but I don’t have to like it. I give it a 3 out of 5.

I don't think I notice typos all that much, but I noticed about 4 or so throughout the 1st book, but this book, I had noticed 4 errors in 4 chapters. Obviously not enough that I stopped reading, but enough for me to take note.

Onto the book! I know characters are multifaceted beings, and that we expect some growth from them, but the shift in the MFC from book 1 to 2 ...wow!

Gone is the unsure, holier than thou damsel in distress, who vomits her guts up at the slightest inconvenience. Now that the humans know what she is, overnight she's a self assured, full blown certified bad arse who busts into splits mid fight and bests literally all her opponents. Now, this is actually not unexpected from a MFC, what was unexpected was the MFC that lured me into this series no longer exists.

Don't even get me started with her bonded mate. For someone who literally found his mate without contact, or clues but by some psychic bond / pull in the first book, he's certainly not trying too hard to get to her in book 2, despite his apparent free will.

Rant over. I'm happy to leave this one on a cliffhanger.

This is book can not be read with out first reading Forbidden. There are so many pieces to the puzzle and a lot of unanswered questions. I feel that in order to fully appreciate Reckoning, you must read Redemption. With that being said, it does keep your attention and leaves you guessing.

This book started by breaking my heart and it ended with shattering it into tiny pieces. I hated how the monks attacked Rose to get to Gabriel and when she crawled over to him and laid her head on his chest right before they took him from her the tears were flowing so much I couldn't see the words to read any further. I don't like how Nicolae thinks she is such a monster when she has shown him over and over again that she could be around humans and not attack but then finally he begins to see her differently and even gives her his blood to rid her body of poison and then we have William, I was so hurt how he lashed out at Rose and not recognizing her as a friend anymore. Then what Rose had to do next to convince Sadie to go back to Chicago was so hard to read because you know it was one of the most difficult things she ever had to do and I was still not happy with William's reaction to her. It was great seeing Rose and Nicolae call a truce and team up to go find Gabriel. I liked how the author went back and forth between Rose and Gabriel so we could keep track of where they both were and what they both were doing. It was hard reading how much pain Gabriel was in when his body was still changing and he was missing Rose so much. I loved watching Rose use her "pull" to get them a place to stay and here Nicolae falls under this spell also, it was funny her having to fight him off and remind him of who they each were. I did get frustrated after reading about Gabriel suffering over and over again in that tiny room and then not knowing what he was doing there. I was excited that Fane was going to be joining the story and what happens at the Torrent is difficult to read because there is some disturbing bodily injury described but at the same time it was a great part of the book because of the end result. Then enters this new character to the story, Malachi and right away I don't trust him but she goes with him just because he mentions being able to help her find Gabriel. Here and there how the author writes about Rose and Malachi's interactions I was afraid she was going to have them get together which would have killed me. Over the next chapters we learn more about the past, some hidden revelations, and the prophecy. We get to meet some interesting people and Gabriel leaves with them to start on his quest which we read some details about here and there throughout the book. As the story progresses I become more and more suspicious of Malachi. Just as Rose thinks she is going to get ready to move out and start hunting for Gabriel again she gets news that tears her apart. Rose has to face Vladimir, I had a bad feeling about this, I just knew something terrible was going to happen in this battle. When they finally are in front of Vladimir it was awful how he treated people she loved but man did she kick butt lol. I don't want to spoil some of the best parts of this book so all I will say from this part forward is that my emotions ranged from being super scared, proud, happy even for just a second, angered, rage, then feeling pure devastation, and finally the last emotion I felt was despair. I can't wait to read the next book but wow this one was so good.

3.5 stars!

I’ve already confessed to being a cover whore, and like the first book…I really liked this cover too. I’m hoping the third book will match the first two, and with a release date of “2013” I’m hoping we don’t have to wait too long to find out.

So, here’s what this book reminded me a little of. Have you ever watched a tv show and been really into the main characters and plot line? And then every once and awhile they go off onto other characters and plot lines and even though you know they will all related back to each other eventually, it feels like those times drag? That’s what this book reminded me a little bit of.

It’s not that I didn’t realize what’s going on with Gabriel is important, because I did. It’s not that I don’t want to know what’s happening with him because I do. And the fact that he was not with Rose through this book meant that we would have to get separate parts of the story when we panned over to his POV, but for me those parts of the story dragged a little bit. Even though the things he’s going through are absolutely essential to the story, I found myself rushing through it to get back to Rose. But I think in part it’s because I want to get back to the two of them together, it’s not that I don’t care what happens specifically to Gabriel.

On the flip side, I really enjoyed following Rose along in this book. There was enough action to keep the storyline moving and enough drama to keep me interested. I know we are all supposed to love Gabriel but I was happy to see how her relationship (not romantic) develop with Nicolae. I also love Fane, poor guy! I felt like we got to see more of her personality and the tough, badass chick she can be in this book. I definitely felt more connected to her this time.

The action was definitely stepped up in this sequel and revealed storylines throughout the action so it felt like we were part of Rose’s adventure. We definitely got a higher dose of the paranormal in this book vs. the first book. We also got a look at life as an immortal, and you can see why she wants to be normal so badly.

The twist and cliffhanger at the end definitely left me wanting more of this series! I can’t wait to see what happens with Rose and Gabriel. I also want to see what’s going to happen with our favorite siblings, I refuse to believe the worst!

Oh my freaking immortal infested world! I want to simultaneously scream and cry at this book. Just like the first in the trilogy, Reckoning sucked me right into its pages. I did manage to take some breaks from it just to save my sanity, but those breaks weren't long. I could write a novel about what I think, but most of my sentiments are the same concerning the first book (so I will not reiterate my review for it since it will be pretty much the same).

Well we finally see what becomes of our characters and we finally know more about Gabriel and what he is. I will say that I was surprised at the new additions of creatures, but I got used to it the further I read. What I really liked about Reckoning was the increase of action. There was a lot of weapon wielding, head bashing, body slashing, and of course blood spilling. There was not a lot of romance building in this book, but I think it served well for the plot line. We do get introduced to new characters and old ones have re-emerged. There is a fragile truce that has been made, bonds that have been mended, and bonds that have been severed. Now the reader is left wondering what the hell is going to happen to Gabriel and Roseline respectively. And what the hell is going to become of the rest of the group? There have been shocking revelations, allusions to what may happen, and a lot of heartbreak to fill in all the gaps. I am looking forward to reading the final book, but am also dreading how it will end. Somehow I feel that it may be shadowed in somber, that there will be more lives lost (possibly including some characters I have come to really like). However, I hope that some ray of sunshine will fall upon them.

The ending of this book is a cliff-hanger and I was so frustrated at Malachi (though I did always find him a bit suspect). Either way, what in the world of the supernatural is going to happen now? We've got one character seemingly dead, one captured, one a possible traitor, one that's supposed to be dead, and one that still has no idea how to deal. This book, like the first, pulled me in, tugged me whichever way, and finally let me go only to taunt me with questions of "what could have been" and "what happens now." If you enjoyed Forbidden, then you must definitely read Reckoning. If you weren't thrilled with Forbidden, but still want to continue the series, then do it.

After reading forbidden (Book 1 in the series) I was blown away by the characters, love interest but most of all the gripping storyline. After reading such an amazing start to the series, as you can imagine I had great anticipation for book number two. Did it disappoint? Yes! This book shocked me so much, the fact that I was not driven every night to read page after page like I was the first instalment.
The main focus of this book is the journey that Roseline and friends (and one foe) take in search of Gabriel after he was taken from where we last saw him in first book. The story is shown through two perspectives, one is through Roseline and her group and what they encounter during their search to find Gabriel. The other is Gabriel's experiences he goes through while held by his captor and the things he learns about himself, his family and his new found abilities.
I found Roseline side of the story quite dragging at times as the search for Gabriel went on and on! there was little bits of action but nothing in comparison to the first book. This being said there was things that we learnt along the way that we did not know about Roseline and her group members, and there was also a very big twist at the end that we truly did not see coming.
If you liked the action and intensity side of the first book you probably won't get into the second book or enjoy it until you reach the end of the book.
If you're interested in getting to know more about the characters in the stories and you don't mind a slow paced read then this book will be for you, I know some points of this review sound negative but the book was okay and I do see how it helps add to the original story and I'm sure it is setting a great premise for the third book.
Judging by the ending of Reckoning, with the shocking twists that finishes the book, I believe the third book is going to be amazing! so definitely read this one as I'm sure your the same as me and cannot wait to see how Amy Miles brings this series to an end!
I hope this review has helped you, can you please rate it, as it really means a lot. Thanks for reading:)

Ok so, I feel bad for what I'm about to say because I feel like I've gotten to know this author on a more personal level through Facebook. But, I feel that constructive criticism is a good thing, even if we don't want to hear it. So, here it goes...

What I liked: The action. Very fast paced and the writing was very descriptive. I also thought the battle scenes were pretty gory, which I think is hard to do, but there were many parts where I cringed, and not in bad way either.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!

I liked how Rose and Gabriel grew in this book, but unfortunately, they were apart for the ENTIRE book, which I did NOT like at all. In the first book, the building of their relationship is the foundation of that book and it wasn't there in this book so I was disappointed. I guess that's just the hopeless romantic in me! I'm a sucker for romance. Characters in the book kept saying it was for "their own good" to be separated, so I hope that is explained better in the next book.

I loved that we saw more of Fane in this book. He's so yummy and I really hope that he will get his own novella eventually.

Nicolae surprisingly grew on me in this book. I didn't care for him in the first book but he really grew as a character and he was an excellent confidante to Rose. In short, he's adorable and loyal, like a golden retriever lol.

Then we come to the conclusion....

That was certainly a cliffhanger... but I felt it was a tad bit unrealistic. I know, I know, I'm talking about a book about vampires for goodness sake! BUT I still felt like it was a "seriously?" kind of moment. Plus, the whole reason for this "surprise" was just thrown in there, like "Oh yeah, of course that's why" but it just felt flippant to me. I hope this is better explained in the next book so I'm more reassured that this could actually be possible, even for a book about vampires.

So, Amy, I'm sorry! Please don't hate me! But I honestly think I liked Forbidden more. I mean, don't get me wrong, I did like this book but I think it could've been executed a little bit better.

Reckoning takes off right were we left off in Forbidden…Roseline has turned Gabriel into what she is to save his life but now he is gone and she has no idea were to find him or even begin to look for him. She teams up with unlikely ally Nicolae to get Fane out of the downward spiral he is descending into after knowing that he no longer has all of Roselines love. The three of them are introduced to Malichi who is also looking for Gabriel but he is very secretive, works for a mysterious man, and has much to gain by finding Gabriel… what what?
While they are all looking to find Gabriel he is in the belly of a mountain with people that will help him face his new fate…becoming Arotas. What does becoming Arotas mean? Will he ever see Roseline again?
Roseline is even more of a badass in this book than in the first. I think it has come out more since she has something and someone to fight for that she cares for deeply. Fane is back in the group. We know he still loves Roseline but is becoming more and more ok with just being her friend, seeing her happy, and doing anything in his power to help her with whatever she needs. I like Fane, he is handsome, broody, and turns out being a stand up guy. Sadi and William have gone their separate ways, their lives end up hanging in the balance. Nicolie has become someone that Roseline trusts completely and I really enjoy seeing Nicolie in a different light.

We learn more about the prophecy and what it means for each character in the story. I also enjoyed the time that Gabrielle and Roseline spend apart. You get to know them better; their emotions, and they get to travel their own paths separately for a while.

This second installment in the Arotas Trilogy takes you on a totally different path that I was so not expecting! You learn so much back-story and history of how creatures like Roseline came to be…. and they end up being nothing that I anticipated! Reckoning is full of deception, love, devotion, battles, gore and death. I am anxious to see what comes of the final book! How will it all end?!

Reckoning

Ok so this book picks up basically where book 1 left off, which I liked. It doesn't stay that way though, its actually a lot different than book 1, there is more action, enemies become friends, new character's are introduced, What I especially liked about this book was the newly made friendship between Roseline and Nicolae. It was nice to see him go from creepy to a close friend and someone she became able to depend on in her journey to try and find Gabriel. Also as you know in book 1 (if you have read it) Roseline turned Gabriel at the end, but we find out he is much more than just an Immortal, I'm not gonna say what he is because I don't wanna spoil too much. But he is basically thrust into a whole other world and he has to learn this world and how to survive it or he will die. He basically has to learn who he really is. Another pivotal point was when Roseline FINALLY gets her revenge on Vladamir, and she got it good. Fane plays a big part in Roseline's part of the book, which at first he is none too happy about, but he get's over it I guess you could say and again becomes the one who wants to protect Roseline. I feel bad for him considering his feelings for her, but not too bad because I'm team Gabriel all the way! HAHA. The book switches between Roseline's point of view and Gabriel's since they are in separate places at the moment. One thing I did miss in this book was my Roseline/Gabriel romance, but, that being said, it didn't make me like the book any less.

Overall, if you liked book 1, you will like this book, lots of twists, lots more action. I will definitely continue the series as I can't wait to find out what happens with these characters.

**This review contains spoilers for book 1 so please do not read any further if you have not read it**
Reckoning starts off right were Forbidden ended. After the battle with Vladimir, the only way to save Gabriel's life was to turn him. In my opinion, that book ended in a cliffy because you didn't know if it actually saved him or what was in store for them next. Right off the bat Gabriel is taken from her. She enlists the help of an unlikely ally in order to find Gabriel. The book alternates between Rose's and Gabriel's POV's. I can totally hang with that but it crazy around the midway mark. I'd find myself waiting on bated breaths, hoping for a bone...anything to bring them back together.

All of the action that I loved in Forbidden is back in full force times 10. It was gorey and incredibly detailed. I could feel myself in the scenes, watching it unfold right before my eyes. Just when I thought I was getting what I wanted it was snatched away from me. I feel like Amy killed my puppy....not just killed it, but ripped it to shreds. My heart is broken after yet another CLIFFY! I can't even wrap my mind around the revelations that were thrown at me. Everything I believed was somehow twisted into this magnificent mind fuckery that was utterly fantastic. NO ONE IS SAFE!!! Just remember that. I hope book three is a bit kinder to my heart.

I enjoyed this book overall and kept me on my toes with fast paced action. I loved that Roseline has a wit to her that allows for funny moments in the book that had me giggling. Especially the scene in the hotel with Nicolae. She is a badass character with soft edges to her and yess!!! One of the best YA heroines I have the pleasure to read. And poor poor Fane, my heart just goes out to him because he's still in love with her but I'm so glad he's still part of the adventure because he is one great male character.
The only thing that bothered me were the battle between Vladimir and Rose. I got irritated by them, I felt it was dragged out and repeatedly cussed because Rose had multiple chances to kill Vlad and ample time. I was like what the crap??? The first time she hits him in the balls and leaves him there instead of slashing his head off, the second time she kicks and he hits the wall but she spends her time looking at the battle down in the courtyard instead of ending him there when she had the chance. I'm like gurl. Let's GO GO GO! Don't stand there! Finish him off!!! So those were the things the really ticked me off about this book but other than that it was a fantastic read.
