The votes are in. The die is cast. The Water Tower's fate has been sealed. Riding the shockwave of an unforeseen betrayal, journalist Adam Chapman is forced to re-evaluate everything he thought he knew. In a world where secrets abound, and nothing is quite what it seems, exactly what will it take to bring the truth to light? As the village of Little Bassington awakes to a new reality, Adam is confronted with a message from beyond the grave, Clarissa Clements is left to face the future alone, and Hilda Stanton must grapple with another decisive turning point in her life - the consequences of which will have far-reaching implications for those she holds most dear... Meanwhile, a clandestine rendezvous on the seafront holds the key to more than one person's salvation. Though with the hero of the hour ailing, could this be one battle too many for the fractured campaigners? The moment of truth is drawing near. But where tragedy strikes, does redemption always follow? The fourth in Chris Vobe's five-volume epic, 'The Water Tower' is a raw and uncompromising tale of love, loyalty and allegiance, and offers a candid exploration of the way we deal with loss.

Another Cliffhanger Leaves Us Screaming For The Next Instalment

Like the other three novels in the series before it, The Water Tower - Book Four, Redux, is just superb. It continues the story of Adam Chapman, Victoria Kendall, and the other Little Bassington villagers caught up in the campaign to save the titular water tower from demolition, and the destruction of swathes of countryside from a corrupt development company.

Part emotional roller coaster, part oozing pure literary vibes, and part mystery, author Chris Vobe’s writing is spot on, as it seamlessly transports us back to the village immediately after the cliffhanger ending of Book Three, Revelation.

It takes us on the journeys of several main characters, giving us a valuable insight into their psyche, while exploring how they deal with betrayal and loss, and leads us to another shocking cliffhanger with the very last paragraph.

So, while readers’ hearts are thumping from those final few pages, they were almost broken right at the start with a literary-style prologue, which Vobe calls an Overture, where he analyses endings – a brilliant piece of pose which sets the scene for two more sequences, both of which are simply entitled Endings.

Revelations’ cliffhanger was an act of betrayal that has enormous consequences for everyone throughout Redux. We did see in the previous book that the betrayal was done for personal reasons – not for the betrayer’s benefit, but to protect someone they love.

There’d been hints of something in Adam’s past right from the start of Book One, and as it led to Victoria’s massive betrayal of not only Adam, but the whole village at the end of Book Three, I’d expected to learn what that was in Redux. But the plot construction tantalisingly kept that at bay, with the book ending just as we’re about to find out what it was. Vobe certainly knows how to build the tension, and leave us dangling, screaming out for more, which must surely come in the fifth and final instalment of this brilliant series.

Five stars for everything in Redux – character development, plot development and pace, and the style of writing that leads us to what promises to be a shattering climax in this epic tale of love, loss, betrayal and drama.
