I Spread My Wings and Keep My Promise - 14 Squadron RAFW ho are my favorite heroes? Those tormented men who have served their countries with honor, risking all, asking for nothing in return… those men who look death in the face, every day, for no other reason than to make the world a safer place for people they don’t know, people they’ll never meet. Show us his pain, his demons, his vulnerabilities… give me a man like that, one who never gives up, and you’ve given me a hero I’ll fall in love with, a hero like Daniel Fox.
W ho are my favorite heroines? Those strong women who have struggles of their own but refuse to quit trying. The women who do what they can to make a difference, to make the world a better place, however they can, who don’t let the difficulties that life has handed them stand in their way… that’s the kind of woman I would choose to be, a woman like Cameran Young
W hat are my favorite storylines? The ones that center around real life situations, the kinds that challenge the characters to step up and be the best people they can be. Believable, thought provoking stories that grab hold and never let go, and leave me questioning the things I’d be raised to believe… political, environmental… it doesn’t matter, as long as I finish the book asking myself what I can do to make the world a better place, that’s my kind of story… a story like Edge of Survival.
T here are just so many things to love about this book that it’s nearly impossible to list them all! I’ve already mentioned the great characters and the awesome story, but another one of my favorite things is how each chapter is introduced with a saying or motto belonging to branches of the armed services, each one somehow representing the theme of that chapter. I tried to choose only a few favorites, but I just couldn’t narrow them down, so I've decided to share them all:
Chapter 1: In Harm’s Way - USS John Paul JonesT he bottom line – If you’re addicted to great Romantic Suspense like I am, and you’re always looking for another fix, then look no further. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. Edge of Survival is without a doubt, one of the most exciting, romantic, sexy stories I’ve had the pleasure of reading this year and I will definitely be looking for more by Toni Anderson.

The one book I read by this author, didn't work for me but my friends had rated her books higher so I decided to give Edge of Survival a read and I am glad I did because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do so much like reading about damaged and human characters and the hero Daniel fits the bill.
Daniel Fox, the hero is a pilot and has been in Canada for about twenty-three months ever since his career went down the drain and the disaster of his last mission with British SAS took root in his conscious plaguing him with nightmares, causing him to cut off contact with his best friend Maggie(he's a guy) and drowning himself in booze and meaningless sex. At the start of the book he continues with his destructive ways hooking up with Vikki, the assistant of Cam, our heroine the very first day but slowly he comes to see what he is doing and vows to lay off the booze and the sex and hold on to the job he likes.
He isn't a total douche, just lost, for years he served his country and then a reporter blew his cover and maligned his entire force in the press because his team came to rescue them and her husband got shot in the process(Daniel shot him), so he got out to let his team carry on.
Dr. Cameron Young has something to prove. She was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 14 and her parents went over-board trying to deal with it but she got used to it and its limitations. She knows the dangers and isn't reckless but her new job is something her mom isn't happy about. Her start isn't that great as she sees a dead-body of a young woman, who as it turns out was murdered.
Besides the two main characters, we get view points from the one's investigating the murder, the lead officer grappling with a failed marriage and other issues. We also get to read about Vikki and her self-esteem issues that make her sleep around and how at the end of the book she has got a handle on it and the creepy miners and the murderer.
Cam and Daniel don't like each other at first because Daniel goes out of his way to scare Cam and once he learns of her diabetes irritates her constantly with his questions about her food etc What I really liked was how these two slowly become friends though Daniel doesn't want friends, he is still in his dark place.
Cam is attracted to Daniel but she knows about his womanizing ways and the only two men she slept with were with whom she was engaged, but she still jumps in(after some hesitation) and knows that it won't go anywhere. Daniel is such a flawed character, that he cares for Cam is obvious, his concern for her that makes him want to not lose his job, the way he tries to find out about diabetes, everything but he starts running scared about how close she is getting to him and acts like a jerk, breaking it off and contemplating getting back to his old ways when he finally accepts what he has been running from, the fact that he has PTSD and needs help.
To me his journey was beautifully portrayed, his struggle after he lost the life and career he had loved and finally the acceptance that came in part due to his falling in love with Cam. I also loved how strong Cam was and so dedicated to the fact that diabetes wouldn't get in the way of her doing anything.
All in all I enjoyed the book quite a bit, the mystery part wasn't bad and I loved the journey of the characters.

Could be just me, but I DNF-ed after Chapter 3. To me, the hero of a romance cannot be sleeping with other women, especially not after he's met the heroine and she's started doing something to his buried heart. Once Daniel slept with Cam's assistant, Ms. Anderson lost me. There's this bit where the assistant (can't even remember her name!) tells Daniel that he should be 'a real man' and shag her, because that's what a real man would do. I beg to differ, because to me, a 'real' man knows how to say no to temptation. That's the definition of a hero to me, and sadly, Daniel did not deliver this. A lot of reviews say he redeems himself later, but I couldn't keep reading to see how, because he had already let me down...
This is sad coz I love Toni Anderson's books usually (Sea of Suspicion was one I lterally devoured!) but this one fell through for me.
Just saying it wasn't my cup of tea, but many of you will probably love it.

Rugged hero, smart and fearless heroine, an environment meant to humble humans and a hot, hot romance. Loved this tale of a disgraced James Bond hero and a heroine who refused to let her diabetes rule her life. The baddie was well hidden right to the end.
On her first day as leader of the Environment Impact Assessment team she meets a man who is the definition of sex on a stick and finds a dead body. Cameran Young expected the job to be tough, harsh conditions in the Canadian bush and nasty miners, but she was so not prepared for the impact of Daniel Fox.
Daniel is now a helicopter pilot after leaving the British SAS. He has left that life far behind, except when he closes his eyes at night, he is right back in the middle of his last firefight. He doesn't get close to anyone, but for some reason the fisty Doc has gotten under his skin. Maybe it he her diabetes or her total innocence or the way his body responds whenever she is around. Whatever it is he is compelled to protect her from the killer who wants her and her project to fail.

I started out just liking this book and then about the 54% mark the book grabbed me. I was still waiting for the heat to hit and about 60% it started to smolder and then the flames kicked in :) Shortly after that the big action started and that's when I was wowed big time.
Loved the characters, the plot, the story line and the heat but most of all the ending.

Both dazzled and disgusted by the handsome — and promiscuous — helicopter pilot, Daniel, who comes to her rescue, she can’t help but be attracted to him. She knows his kind, however, and while he makes it more than obvious that he’s a charming rogue ready to bed-hop with anyone willing, Cameran’s own self respect requires that there be some sort of emotional connection between her and a lover.
Daniel is more than just a pretty face with a womanizing reputation, however. A strong, intelligent woman, she also recognizes that while a fling with Daniel might break her heart, it might also be worth it just to experience a single moment in her life where she’s able to just enjoy herself without really thinking too hard about the consequences.
For Daniel, no-strings sex and alcohol have been his crutch after his fall from grace in the military. Suffering from a fairly strong case of PTSD, he doesn’t dare seek out a meaningful relationship because he really has nothing to offer. When he meets Cameran, however, he can’t help but be attracted to her, and when he learns of his disorder, long-dead protective instincts rise to the surface, until he will do anything to keep her safe.
The mystery behind the grisly murder of a young woman and the unknown killer who will not let Cameran stand in their way added a great deal of intensity to the story, and the twist at the end was masterfully done.
Overall, this was a fast-paced, exciting story with both large amounts of action and drama and a strong dose of sexy romance. Recommended for fans of tortured heroes, tough yet vulnerable heroines, and exciting suspense. 4.5/5 Stars

Edge of Survival By Toni Anderson released from Carina Press on the 21st of this month. Due to certain other commitments and stuff that kept cropping up, I took my own sweet time to finish this fantastic contemporary romantic suspense that features a hot British hero who made all my James Bond fantasies come to life.
34 year old Daniel Fox is a former SAS agent whose sole focus after his spotless military career goes haywire in a split moment’s decision becomes flying, drinking and seducing anything that moves. With his indigo blue eyes and charming physical attributes, not to mention that swoon worthy accent of his, women have no complaints whatsoever on being used by Daniel to forget the nightmares that continue to plague him.
Dr. Cameran Young is the lead biologist on the Environment Impact Assessment team for a large mining project in the Canadian bush. Being one who suffers from diabetes, Cameran’s life is not for the faint of heart with her battle for survival that is waged every single second of every day. When Cameran’s work takes her to the remote and at times hostile environment in the Canadian bush, the last thing she expects is to walk in on a murdered woman to kick-start her trip.
When Cameran and Daniel’s paths cross, there is no stopping the fireworks that begins right from the very start. Though Daniel does everything in his power to turn his back on the numerous feelings that bombards the shield of steel that guards his emotions and heart, Cameran’s effect on him is not as easy to ignore as he would like.
Cameran might try telling herself that Daniel is the type of man who would love and leave without even a backward glance and she is so not the type to get tangled up with someone like him. But her heart and baser emotions have a plan of their own; that is to get as up close and personal with Daniel and his uber swoon worthy body that tends to make Cameran feel as if she is on a sugar high all the time.
Though this is my first Toni Anderson I was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which she drew me into the story and had me all tied up in knots over each and every single one of her characters. She has a style of writing that has earned her a spot on my authors to look out for in the future. I loved the way she developed all the characters in the story, and I guess will continue to wonder whether she plans to write any more stories with some of the characters that were encountered during Daniel’s tortured journey towards happinesss with Cameran.
As I said before Daniel is the type of hero to bring each of your wickedest Bond fantasies to life. Even when he is making an ass out of himself by sleeping with every woman who crosses paths with him, he has a charm about him that makes it hard to harbor any ill feelings towards him. Needless to say, I loved how Daniel’s character was brought to life, how he grew throughout the story and how his feelings progressed. I loved his tortured soul that just made me want to hug him close and was practically jumping up and down with glee during those moments that he tried so hard to stay away from Cameran and could not!
Cameran’s character is the type of heroine that I love best. With no coyness to her, she is upfront and straightforward with what she wants and how she feels which is how I like my heroines. The way she slowly chips away at the resistance that is so much a part pf Daniel was both fun and heartwarming to read about. I loved those scenes of seduction between Daniel and Cameran which were pretty hot and at the same time loved how the seducer becomes the seduced in most of the scenes.
The villain and the moment where everything clicked together was one of the best aspects of the story which I say signals the fact that this romantic suspense is a well done one. Sensual, different; romance with a bit of angst, just how I like them; Edge of Survival is a romantic suspense not to be missed.

34 year old Daniel Fox is a former SAS agent whose sole focus after his spotless military career goes haywire in a split moment’s decision becomes flying, drinking and seducing anything that moves. With his indigo blue eyes and charming physical attributes, not to mention that swoon worthy accent of his, women have no complaints whatsoever on being used by Daniel to forget the nightmares that continue to plague him.
Dr. Cameran Young is the lead biologist on the Environment Impact Assessment team for a large mining project in the Canadian bush. Being one who suffers from diabetes, Cameran’s life is not for the faint of heart with her battle for survival that is waged every single second of every day. When Cameran’s work takes her to the remote and at times hostile environment in the Canadian bush, the last thing she expects is to walk in on a murdered woman to kick-start her trip.
When Cameran and Daniel’s paths cross, there is no stopping the fireworks that begins right from the very start. Though Daniel does everything in his power to turn his back on the numerous feelings that bombards the shield of steel that guards his emotions and heart, Cameran’s effect on him is not as easy to ignore as he would like.
Cameran might try telling herself that Daniel is the type of man who would love and leave without even a backward glance and she is so not the type to get tangled up with someone like him. But her heart and baser emotions have a plan of their own; that is to get as up close and personal with Daniel and his uber swoon worthy body that tends to make Cameran feel as if she is on a sugar high all the time.
Though this is my first Toni Anderson I was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which she drew me into the story and had me all tied up in knots over each and every single one of her characters. She has a style of writing that has earned her a spot on my authors to look out for in the future. I loved the way she developed all the characters in the story, and I guess will continue to wonder whether she plans to write any more stories with some of the characters that were encountered during Daniel’s tortured journey towards happinesss with Cameran.
As I said before Daniel is the type of hero to bring each of your wickedest Bond fantasies to life. Even when he is making an ass out of himself by sleeping with every woman who crosses paths with him, he has a charm about him that makes it hard to harbor any ill feelings towards him. Needless to say, I loved how Daniel’s character was brought to life, how he grew throughout the story and how his feelings progressed. I loved his tortured soul that just made me want to hug him close and was practically jumping up and down with glee during those moments that he tried so hard to stay away from Cameran and could not!
Cameran’s character is the type of heroine that I love best. With no coyness to her, she is upfront and straightforward with what she wants and how she feels which is how I like my heroines. The way she slowly chips away at the resistance that is so much a part pf Daniel was both fun and heartwarming to read about. I loved those scenes of seduction between Daniel and Cameran which were pretty hot and at the same time loved how the seducer becomes the seduced in most of the scenes.
The villain and the moment where everything clicked together was one of the best aspects of the story which I say signals the fact that this romantic suspense is a well done one. Sensual, different; romance with a bit of angst, just how I like them; Edge of Survival is a romantic suspense not to be missed.

Wow, what a great romantic suspense story. There are so many things that made this book special and two of them are not the usual things that would stand out in a book.
First; the author created a heroine with Type 1 Diabetes. In her intro to the book she mentions that 15% of the royalties for this book will go towards fundraising for diabetes research. Toni Anderson did a stellar job of integrating the extremely challenging aspects of this disease into the heroine's life, her back story, her every waking and, unfortunately, sleeping moment. My first husband had Type I diabetes and, until you live with it, you never see how completely it shadows everything in your daily life. In Edge of Survival, the author doesn't play lip service to this devastating disease by just mentioning it in passing...she ably demonstrates the day to day reality of it without overshadowing the story of Cameran and her research work.
Second; The story takes place in Northern Canada where the land is harsh but beautiful and the people are tough as nails. This added such a feeling of intensity to the story. There were no distractions with city life or even country life. Life in the wilderness is pretty stark and unpredictable and, in this case, the setting of the story really allows the reader to focus on the characters and the mystery.
Even with those two unusual features she still had to write a romantic suspense story. Anderson succeeded 100%. Her two main characters were troubled in their own way and each carried heavy burdens. Daniel, barely surviving in the dark world of PTSD and Cameran, struggling to succeed under the weight of her disease, the worry and smothering of her family, her gender, and the hostile inhabitants of the area.
If romantic suspense is your thing and you want something a little different, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

The best parts of this book were most definitely the ones with Daniel and Cameran..those two were a great couple! They had really good chemistry! He was a very yummy, former military, tortured alpha male suffering from PTSD and she was a smart and tough biologist, no shrinking violet that's for sure and i really liked how they incorporated her having diabetes into the storyline...it's a disease i didn't know a whole lot about so it was really interesting and kind of scarey how Cameran had to live her life because of it.
What i didn't so much love were the scenes where we got the killer's point of view. They were kind of odd and uninteresting...unfortunately, i found myself skimming through his chpts. All he was doing was "stalking/hunting" an animal! There was nothing exciting or suspenseful about that. With the way the book started, with the woman's dead body, i was sort of expecting an edge of your seat story. Sadly that wasn't so much the case for me. It was just alright, again, with the exception of all the interaction between the two main characters which thankfully there were a lot of! :)

A thrilling romantic suspense. The hero, Daniel Fox, is a helicopter pilot who is trying to deal with his past. He wasn't very likable at times but I still loved him. Cameran Young is the heroine, a young biologist with diabetes, studying fish migration in Canada. This was almost a 5 star but not quite. There were minor things towards the end that I would have liked to seen done differently. I recommend to anyone who loves romantic suspense with a great balance of suspense and romance.

5 stars for the suspense and realistic scene descriptions and a very realistic look at a person living with diabetes.
Cameran Young is a biologist who along with her team has come to the northern Canadian bush to do a Environment Impact Assessment. When they arrive in town and are waiting for the helicopter pilot that is going to take them to the ship where they will be stationed for the next 3 month they realize the miners aren’t happy they are there fearing they are going to ruin their jobs. Once the pilot shows up Cam decides to head to the bathroom for a quick break and gets the shock of her life. A dead body of a young woman.
Daniel Fox used to work for the United Kingdom Special Forces known as SAS (Special Air Service). After having to leave in unfavorable circumstances due to something tragic that happened on his last mission he decides to come to Canada to be a helicopter pilot. His way of getting through life was drinking and having meaningless sex to keep his mind off of the disaster his life had become. After going to check on Cam and finding what she found in the bathroom he realizes his ingrained instincts to protect are still there and he isn’t happy about it.
Cam and Daniel aren’t your typical Hero and Heroine. We as the reader’s know that Daniel is suffering from PTSD even though he hasn’t figured it out himself. Daniel does something early in the book that would probably turn most women off but for me I understood he was in emotional pain and was just looking to numb it anyway he could. Cam has diabetes type 1. She has had it since she was 14 and has decided that she isn’t going to let it rule her life and keeps tight control over it. When Daniel first see’s her injecting herself with insulin he thinks she is a junkie but once she explains he is even more frustrated with himself because now he really feels he has to protect this woman who comes out to the bush with a disease he doesn’t really understand and he doesn’t understand his attraction to Cam either and he tries to fight it so hard at first.
We get quite a few POV’s in this book. One of the characters I liked the best was a Staff Sergeant with the Canadian Mounties. Poor guy gets called to the scene of the murder after he had taken a Viagra on the advice of his marriage counselor and his wife to try and save his marriage. They convinced him he was suffering from ED. So his first meeting with a young female officer that has been assigned to him is quite comical.
I loved the scene descriptions of where this book took place. There wasn’t only the threat from multiple bad guys but also from nature and the animals.
I also have to give the author credit for a very realistic description of a person living with diabetes. My son has type 1 and I can tell you everything Cam goes through is very realistic. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Dr Cameran Young is part of an Environmental Impact Assessment team doing a baseline study on fish migration to try and minimize the impact of the mine being built to the wildlife. On arrival in the northern Canadian bush not only did she encounter hostile miners but also a dead women in the local bar.
Daniel Fox has lost his military career, his life and his honor so numbs his pain by using women and alcohol as a coping mechanism and focuses his time on his job as a helicopter pilot. His latest assignment is transporting Cameran and her crew to their research vessel, where she will remain until she completes her findings.
The Edge of Survival plot was well written and enjoyable; Cam and Daniel were not only working together on their respective jobs but also trying to avoid suspicion for the murder of the dead woman. This book certainly took us on an exciting journey, I was absolutely clueless as to whom the murderer could be and although I took a guess, I was completely wrong; I always enjoy the element of surprise in Romantic Suspense novels and it was certainly the case in this book.
I really liked our main characters - Cameran was smart, disciplined and logical and although she did have diabetes she knew her disease didn’t define who she was as a person, it has never stopped her from doing what she has wanted to do and for this I admired her. I felt for Daniel and what he has had to endure, he was dismissed by the army for a mistake and has never truly forgiven himself or accepted that he could be suffering from PTSD.
Daniel tried on numerous occasions to push Cam away, but their attraction was undeniable. I enjoyed the way he protected and cared for her and am pleased with how their relationship progressed; I just wish Cam’s best friend Vikki Salinger had of been left out of the equation.
The secondary characters were each developed well, I liked the support provided by Officer Griff Kershaw and felt sorry for him and his family life. For some reason I especially disliked Vikki – I can’t pinpoint why but I felt distrust towards her from the get go. All of the supporting characters played an important role in this book.
Ms Anderson’s talent with words immerses you in the exciting and entertaining story she is telling. Edge of Survival is certainly a fast-paced, engrossing read that keeps you guessing right through to the last page.
I would recommend Edge of Survival to anyone who enjoys a well-written, suspense story with lots of mystery and twists and turns.

Wicked Wilderness Adventure
Stumbling upon a dead body on the first day of a new assignment doesn't exactly imbue biologist Dr. Cameran Young with a sense of calm confidence and hopeful enthusiasm. In fact, it freaks her the hell out. She's in the northern Canadian wilds to head an Environmental Impact Assessment team in part because it is both her job and her passion to ensure that the large mining operation in the area will have minimal impact on the delicate ecology. The other part is the sheer challenge of the location and a gritty determination to live her life by her own terms. Terms that don't include letting her Type 1 diabetes and the fear of its potential ravages dictate her choices and rule her life.
A brutally murdered young woman, though, is more than she bargained for.
In shock from the discovery, she hardly remembers the arrogant pilot pulling her away from the scene and rushing her off to his chopper before he calls in the body to the authorities. She isn't too clear on the flight to the research vessel, either. Once there, though, and faced with surly and sarcastic helicopter pilot Daniel Fox, she's ready to lay the blame of the murder at his feet.
Disgraced SAS Sergeant Daniel Fox is struggling with the memories and guilt born in brutal combat. He flies like the devil is chasing him, boozes it up to quiet the night terrors, and beds women indiscriminately. As far as coping mechanisms go, he knows it's self destructive. He just doesn't have anything else. One look at Dr. Cam Young and he knows she's trouble. It doesn't take him long to realize that first impressions are misleading. Dr. Young isn't trouble. She's a catastrophe waiting to happen. What stuns Daniel is that for the first time in several years, he actually feels concern for someone other than himself, and an unfamiliar desire to protect the woman.
Cam's penchant for digging up disaster throws the two of them together in ways that are uncomfortable for both of them. When the proud doc and the daredevil pilot are forced to work together, though, discomfort turns to desire...but giving into the heat rising between them might be the most devastating catastrophe of all.

There's so much to like about this latest romantic suspense by Anderson. I loved Cam and Daniel as the main characters and thoroughly enjoyed them together in the romance arc. Cam is a fiesty, intelligent heroine afflicted with a horrible disease. I respected her attitude towards her diabetes, as well as the way she managed it. I have to say, I even loved that Anderson wrote a main character with diabetes. It's a disease that deserves a heightened level of awareness and I found it refreshing to read a heroine who isn't totally perfect in mind and body, who has significant life challenges to deal with every day. It's realistic and humanizing.
Daniel is also right up my alley for male romantic leads. He's not at all a nice guy at first, too tormented by his past and riddled with his inner demons to be anything but a selfish, self-pitying, womanizing prat. What I appreciated the most about his character, though, is twofold. He is self-aware enough to recognize his problems and at least try to rein in the most reckless of his behavior, and even when his attitude starts to improve, he is still saddled with his demons and struggles with his vices. That didn't just magically disappear under the calming influences (and too oft-written mystical healing properties) of the love of a good woman. He is much less a prat...to Cam, anyway...but he's still sort of a jerk to others at times (admittedly, mostly warranted). He's also a good man with a sense of honor, protective in nature, with definite alpha male tendencies.
Plus he's British, so there's that whole accent thing. I'm a total sucker for the accent thing.
The characters and their romance were the most pleasing elements of the book for me. I also want to give a special mention for secondary character RCMP Staff Sergeant Griff Kershaw, the Mountie who leads the murder investigation. I sorta loved him a lot and enjoyed every scene that featured his presence and perspective. In fact, I kept picturing Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive, Men in Black) when I was reading, because I could totally see Jones embodying the older, wife-weary, sometimes sheepish, sometimes comedic, dedicated father and pursuer of justice.
I am slightly less enthusiastic about the external suspense plotline. I think it was an interesting concept, and I understand the motives involved, but it didn't develop and evolve throughout the book in a manner that I felt added any significant level of suspense. After starting out with the gruesome murder of a young woman, the subsequent actions of the killer were decidedly less threatening to other characters. In fact, they didn't really affect the main characters in any direct way at all until the end of the book. That created a disconnect for me between the killer's actions and motives, the murder investigation, and Cam and Daniel's characters. So much of one that when the pieces all started to come back together again for the final conflict, I felt a noticeable lack of emotional impact from the reveal of the killer and the action that followed. Then, the big-picture end results disclosed in the epilogue-esque conclusion were so unsatisfactory to me that it lent an air of pointlessness to the entire thread.
The risks, the precautions, and the dangers surrounding Cam's diabetes, as well as the threats of Mother Nature inherent in the wilds of northern Canada, served as more gripping sources of suspense for Cam and Daniel than anything to do with murder. That crime ended up seeming, no pun intended, overkill.
I also had one or two lesser concerns surrounding secondary character Vikki Salinger, Cam's gorgeous former-model friend and lab assistant. She never seemed all that stable, and for all that Cam considered her a good friend, I didn't see any evidence of it in Vikki's behavior. She instead struck me as a boozing floozy; a vicious shrew whose presence neither helped Cam professionally, nor provided any source of friendship personally. In fact, the tart did little for the story beyond giving Daniel a place to dip his wick pre-Cam, then stir up discord by demonizing him all over the place after their hookup. And any redemption she could have had by finding a sponsor and altering her behavior was negated by her flapping her mouth to stir up trouble for Daniel with the Mounties. I found her character unlikable.
As a romance with suspenseful elements, set in a wide wilderness of sweeping vistas and dangerous flora and fauna, with two completely believable, realistic characters who effortlessly stir the sizzling chemistry between them, this book was a roaring success for me. Factoring in the external suspense plotline took a bit of the bloom off the rose. Just a bit, though. I was completely satisfied with the overall reading experience and enjoyed the book very much. I feel even more strongly for the romance story arc and the main characters. Like I said, there's much to like in this latest by Anderson. So much, in fact, that I'll happily wait for whatever she's got coming next.

I am slightly less enthusiastic about the external suspense plotline. I think it was an interesting concept, and I understand the motives involved, but it didn't develop and evolve throughout the book in a manner that I felt added any significant level of suspense. After starting out with the gruesome murder of a young woman, the subsequent actions of the killer were decidedly less threatening to other characters. In fact, they didn't really affect the main characters in any direct way at all until the end of the book. That created a disconnect for me between the killer's actions and motives, the murder investigation, and Cam and Daniel's characters. So much of one that when the pieces all started to come back together again for the final conflict, I felt a noticeable lack of emotional impact from the reveal of the killer and the action that followed. Then, the big-picture end results disclosed in the epilogue-esque conclusion were so unsatisfactory to me that it lent an air of pointlessness to the entire thread.
The risks, the precautions, and the dangers surrounding Cam's diabetes, as well as the threats of Mother Nature inherent in the wilds of northern Canada, served as more gripping sources of suspense for Cam and Daniel than anything to do with murder. That crime ended up seeming, no pun intended, overkill.
I also had one or two lesser concerns surrounding secondary character Vikki Salinger, Cam's gorgeous former-model friend and lab assistant. She never seemed all that stable, and for all that Cam considered her a good friend, I didn't see any evidence of it in Vikki's behavior. She instead struck me as a boozing floozy; a vicious shrew whose presence neither helped Cam professionally, nor provided any source of friendship personally. In fact, the tart did little for the story beyond giving Daniel a place to dip his wick pre-Cam, then stir up discord by demonizing him all over the place after their hookup. And any redemption she could have had by finding a sponsor and altering her behavior was negated by her flapping her mouth to stir up trouble for Daniel with the Mounties. I found her character unlikable.
As a romance with suspenseful elements, set in a wide wilderness of sweeping vistas and dangerous flora and fauna, with two completely believable, realistic characters who effortlessly stir the sizzling chemistry between them, this book was a roaring success for me. Factoring in the external suspense plotline took a bit of the bloom off the rose. Just a bit, though. I was completely satisfied with the overall reading experience and enjoyed the book very much. I feel even more strongly for the romance story arc and the main characters. Like I said, there's much to like in this latest by Anderson. So much, in fact, that I'll happily wait for whatever she's got coming next.

Oh wow this book was a total surprise, even though I guessed who the killer was the plot was still fantastic and thrilling with enough twists and turns to keep me reading. I really hope I get to learn more about Griff and McCoy I think there is another book there, well I can hope.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, mainly because of the oh-so-fine hero, Daniel Fox. I know right, even the name is yummy. He's an ex-SAS agent, and has a killer British accent. Daniel has a brutal history, as well as a pretty terrible case of PTSD. Watching him try to become a better man was interesting. The heroine in this novel was really unique...she had a very bad case of Diabetes, which made the protective feelings come out for Daniel. There were a few things that happened at the beginning that were on the edge for me, but I forgave Daniel after hearing more about his history, and understanding his need for oblivion.
The suspense portion of this novel was interesting and involved environmental issues. The killer was someone I suspected, but didn't want to believe had it in him. My one complaint about this book was that there were many different points of view written, which is something I'm sure I wouldn't have minded so much if I hadn't been listening to it on audio. Normally, I can skim the killer POV and still get the gist of evilness, but you can't really do that with an audiobook. I really didn't understand why the cops had their POV's written, and I found it kind of annoying.
The ending was highly satisfying, and though I wish there would've been an epilogue (I'm a sucker for an epilogue), I was okay with it. I enjoyed this one much more than my first Toni Anderson book!

This is the second book in a row I’ve read where the heroine has a real life disability/handicap. In Edge of Survival marine biologist Dr. Cameron Young has diabetes and her condition actually plays a major role throughout the novel. The author does a really good job (at least I think she does) of portraying the day to day trials and tribulations someone living with diabetes must endure. Always aware of what and when they’ve eaten and the very real life threat if they are not diligent about looking after themselves. I learned a lot about what one living with diabetes goes through on a daily basis.
The romance was hot and sexy between Cam and Daniel Fox, former SAS agent turned Canadian Bush helicopter pilot. Of course the fact that this story takes place in the Canadian wilderness automatically earns it an extra ½ point rating in my book.
The suspense plot was well crafted and kept me guessing and when the killer was finally revealed - I was shocked! The ending kept me on pins and needles.
Edge of Survival provides a great blend of romance and suspense. I will be reading more from this author in the future.

I had never heard of this author before, and was pleasantly surprised with this book. Very good mix of mystery, suspense, action and romance! I didn't guess the bad guy at all! Totally thought it was someone else. The characters were well developed. I liked the heroine--smart, strong, fiesty, etc. The hero is your typical tortured alpha type (ie, military man with PTSD), but I have to admit I had a problem with his womanizing ways. He ended up not being as likable to me for this reason. The romance portion is angsty at times--I actually wondered if it was going to have an HEA (which it does). I'll definitely check out other books by this author.

Edge of Survival is a thrilling, fast-paced story that keeps the reader guessing throughout. I enjoyed author Toni Anderson’s willingness to write about such a difficult disease ~ diabetes. Her character, Dr. Cameron Young, faces many obstacles in her desire to do her job despite her diabetes; but her biggest obstacle comes in the form of ex-military Sergeant Daniel Fox.
I loved the plot setting, and the wonderful scene setting in Northern Canada. The characters were believable in their character flaws and realistic “issues.” The romance was unique and kept my interest. The danger and drama kept my interest from beginning to end with many twists throughout. Enjoyed the opportunity to read this book and definitely recommend it for readers of romance, suspense, intrigue and more.

I was lucky enough to get an advance reading copy of Edge of Survival. I’m a huge Toni Anderson fan and I believe this is her best yet. I can’t tell you how much I loved this book.
Doctor Cameran Young, our heroine, is a biologist leading an environment impact assessment team in the northern Canadian bush. She’s prepared for everything the area can throw at her, but finding a dead body wasn't the greatest start.
Helicopter pilot and former SAS Sergeant Daniel Fox, despite his best intentions, gets involved in the murder investigation and with Cameran.
Everything about this book, from the wonderful setting to the most minor character, is perfect. It’s a fast-paced romantic suspense, exceptionally well-written, that will keep you hooked from first page to last.
I only wish I could give it more stars!

I really enjoyed reading Edge of Survival by Toni Anderson. I especially loved the strength and character of Dr. Cameran Young who was strong willed, likeable, and an all around nice person. I wasn't especially fond of the male lead, Sergeant Daniel Fox, who was brash, self centered, and emotionally challenged. I had a hard time believing the budding romance between them, but even with my doubts about the chemistry between the two, I still really enjoyed the story and would recommend it to friends.
I found the plot to be original and well written. The suspense was extraordinary and many times I was nervously reading because I was a bit scared about what would happen next. It is by no means a horror book... simply an outstanding suspenseful read. Ms. Anderson is a talent to keep an eye on. I know I will be!

A fabulous, tension-filled read. The author is a marine biologist and her knowledge of the subject shows in this story, without slowing it down. Her heroine is diabetic. I have a niece with type 1 diabetes and could relate to the fears that Cam lived with on a daily basis.
The hero is ex-UK special forces, haunted by a mission that ended in him shooting a civilian.
Cam and Daniel are thrown together when they discover a murdered woman in a small Canadian town. Daniel is suspected of committing the murder. Cam knows he couldn't have. Tension mounts as Cam carries out her survey of migrating fish in an area where a mining company wish to dam the river. She can relate to the locals, who want things left the way they are. Or do they...
A great climax and I didn't guess the ending. More of the same, please.

'Edge of Survival' is a romantic suspense based in the wilds of Canada. The heroine of the story is living with diabetes and the book explains the condition making the reader aware of the trials a sufferer has to go through just living day to day. It also shows how difficult and worrying it is for their loved ones. Toni Anderson is generously donating 15% of her book royalties to help find a cure for diabetes; so as well as enjoying a brilliant story you can feel good about helping a worthy cause.
The hero also has problems that he needs to address and I think the author does well to point out what our servicemen and women endure.
The book has a number of well-written and strong secondary characters with background stories all intertwined. If you love romantic suspense I am sure you will love this one!

My rating isn't doesn't jive with some others I've read - but I didn't connect with this one. I'm not exactly sure why, but it didn't pull me in. I liked the premise, and I appreciated some of the reviews I've read, so popped this to the top of my pile to read.
I am glad for the experience, but this just didn't hit the right cylinders for me.
I wouldn't recommend it highly, but others do, so don't mind me ... this may suit you just fine.

I continue to love Toni Anderson, but admittedly this was not one of my favorite books . I left the mystery and the suspense , but I didn't love the romance in the relationship .

Edge of Survival by Toni Anderson is a compelling story of love, murder and survival in a remote and hostile wilderness.
Dr. Cameran Young comes to Frenchmans Bight for her post-doctoral research on fish migration. It should be routine, but...Frenchmans Bight is in the Canadian Wilderness with a capital W. The research is a before-and-after investigation on the building of a mine, and all the miners in the area are just sure her research is all about shutting down the mine. And last but definitely not least in the problem department, Cam is a diabetic, and the Canadian Bush is way far away from civilization if she has a crisis. But that's the whole point as far as Cam is concerned: she needs to prove that she has her disease under control, that she can handle anything that any other researcher can do.
Waiting in the bar for the helicopter pilot to take them to base camp, Cam and her friend Vikki nearly start a barroom brawl. Not just because they are the only women in the place, or possibly even in town, but because the miners are sure they are part of the "tree-hugger" contingent. Just when things start to get ugly, in walks Daniel Fox, their pilot. His British accent, not to mention the rest of him, fuels Cam's James Bond fantasies. Fox doesn't notice Cam, except as an assignment, but then, he's basically detached from people as a species.
Until Cam makes a bathroom run before they board the helicopter, and finds a dead body inside one of the completely disgusting stalls. Not that the body isn't gruesome, but the bathroom hasn't been cleaned since the last ice age. Cam's subsequent panicked flight into Daniel Fox's arms begins to break down his detachment from the human race. He sees Cam as a person who matters to him, the first person in a long time who does, whether he wants to or not.
What about the dead body? He recognizes her. She was one of the local "bikes". Everybody rode Sylvie Watson. But why did someone slit her throat?
The RCMP are called in to investigate the murder while Cam starts her fish research and Daniel's secrets begin to unravel him. The Mounties are famous for always getting their man. Someone will have to pay for murdering Sylvie Watson. The case is very tangled, and the RCMP Staff Sergeant from St. John's Major Crime Unit is faced with the choice of solving the convoluted puzzle in Frenchmans Bight or saving his marriage back home. More futures than his depend on that choice.
Escape Rating B: This was a good, solid romantic suspense story. I didn't figure out who the actual murderer was. I knew the red herring was a red herring, I just didn't see the actual murderer. So very good job on that front!
I found it fascinating, that all the characters in Edge of Survival are damaged in one way or another. Not everyone carries their scars on the outside. Cam has diabetes, Daniel has PTSD. Vikki has self-esteem issues. Even the RCMP officer is a mess. The murderer is probably one of the "paths", as in psychopath or sociopath. Or he's just plain crazy, and he hides it really, really well.
My willing suspension of disbelief slipped a little at the end of the story. One of my pet peeves is the noble hero going off without a word, and when he comes back, all is forgiven with one kiss, or something similar. I want to see some serious groveling. And arguing first. That stunt is always a major piece of macho idiocy, and there should be some major consequences. Instant forgiveness is not a consequence. It's very romantic, but not bloody likely in outside of fiction!

Before she can even get started, Cameran stumbles on to the dead body of a local girl and realises she might have gotten a little over her head.
Daniel is looking to escape his past, one helicopter ride at a time. But there is something about Cameran that pulls at him, makes him want to live and feel once again. The two get closer together, despite their many obstacles. But when Daniel gets framed for the murder and Cameran finds herself in the killer’s path, will he be able to save her in time before she becomes the next victim?
I’m a big fan of romantic suspense, but for some reason I had a difficult time getting into this book. For me, the pace was very slow in the beginning. There were parts that moved quickly and were able to hold my attention well – for example Cameran finding the dead body – but then the plot would go back into a lull and I would fall back into the rut of things moving at a slower pace than I like in my romantic suspense books.
I have to applaud Anderson on her ability to write such a wonderful heroine. Despite Cameran’s struggles with diabetes, she is an engaging and fun heroine to read. All of Cameran’s hardships with the disease were put across the page in a beautiful way, showcasing just how devastating it can be to live with diabetes, and yet how full your life can be with proper care and management. In that aspect, I thought the story was done so incredibly well. I really enjoyed Cameran and her strength.
Daniel on the other hand, was not the kind of romance hero I normally like to read about. Sure he was a sexy alpha man who was wounded and obviously needed a woman to swoop down and save him. But at the same time he was a total ass to Cameran and everyone else he came into contact with. He went so far as to sleep with Cameran’s best friend in the beginning of the book while having lusty thoughts of Cameran in the back of his mind. While normally I don’t mind the alpha-hole heroes, Daniel just came across to me as a first class jerk.
The suspense portion of the book wasn’t as scary suspenseful as others I’ve read. Despite the murder at the beginning of the book, it is fairly obvious that the killer is really only after an animal, although the reasons why are shrouded in mystery to the end. It is really only by chance that Cameran gets messed up in the killer’s web. For me, the whole suspense plot was a little less than stellar, and while it took me awhile to figure out who the bad guy was, it also wasn’t a huge surprise.
All in all I felt this book was great in some areas, and really lack-luster in others. I enjoyed the heroine but never really liked the hero. The suspense and plot and action were at times enjoyable, but overall fell somewhat short for me.

Daniel is looking to escape his past, one helicopter ride at a time. But there is something about Cameran that pulls at him, makes him want to live and feel once again. The two get closer together, despite their many obstacles. But when Daniel gets framed for the murder and Cameran finds herself in the killer’s path, will he be able to save her in time before she becomes the next victim?
I’m a big fan of romantic suspense, but for some reason I had a difficult time getting into this book. For me, the pace was very slow in the beginning. There were parts that moved quickly and were able to hold my attention well – for example Cameran finding the dead body – but then the plot would go back into a lull and I would fall back into the rut of things moving at a slower pace than I like in my romantic suspense books.
I have to applaud Anderson on her ability to write such a wonderful heroine. Despite Cameran’s struggles with diabetes, she is an engaging and fun heroine to read. All of Cameran’s hardships with the disease were put across the page in a beautiful way, showcasing just how devastating it can be to live with diabetes, and yet how full your life can be with proper care and management. In that aspect, I thought the story was done so incredibly well. I really enjoyed Cameran and her strength.
Daniel on the other hand, was not the kind of romance hero I normally like to read about. Sure he was a sexy alpha man who was wounded and obviously needed a woman to swoop down and save him. But at the same time he was a total ass to Cameran and everyone else he came into contact with. He went so far as to sleep with Cameran’s best friend in the beginning of the book while having lusty thoughts of Cameran in the back of his mind. While normally I don’t mind the alpha-hole heroes, Daniel just came across to me as a first class jerk.
The suspense portion of the book wasn’t as scary suspenseful as others I’ve read. Despite the murder at the beginning of the book, it is fairly obvious that the killer is really only after an animal, although the reasons why are shrouded in mystery to the end. It is really only by chance that Cameran gets messed up in the killer’s web. For me, the whole suspense plot was a little less than stellar, and while it took me awhile to figure out who the bad guy was, it also wasn’t a huge surprise.
All in all I felt this book was great in some areas, and really lack-luster in others. I enjoyed the heroine but never really liked the hero. The suspense and plot and action were at times enjoyable, but overall fell somewhat short for me.
