USA TODAY Bestselling Author Misty Evans is celebrating her 100th published novel in 2025. She loves writing urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and mystery/suspense. Under her pen name, Nyx Halliwell, she also writes supernatural cozy mysteries.
When not reading or writing (which is most of the time), she enjoys music, movies, and hanging out with her husband, twin sons, and three spoiled rescue dogs. She’s a crafter at heart and has far too many projects to finish.
Deadly Pursuit is the first book in the SCVC Series. There are so many books with the same premise (group of alpha males working together either for the gov't or in private security) and this one was just in the middle.
The book didn't grab me in the beginning and it took me a while to really get engaged. I never really liked the heroine that much. She came off as immature at times and well stalkerish at others. (She has a picture of her boss running on the beach as her screen saver for her phone and there is no relationship at this point other than boss/subordinate). I also didn't like that she was throwing herself at her boss and let everyone know about it yet she wanted to be taken seriously as a professional.
I did really like the hero. Cooper is charming and protective but also smart and believes in what he is doing. I didn't buy his falling in love with Celina but maybe that's because I didn't really liker her.
It was a decent read but with so many series out there that are similiar I'm not sure I will continue this one.
Not sure I am as crazy about the characters as all the reviews I've read. I see that Evans really loves them, but I don't feel the same connection. Are all 24 year old female agents really that naive? Or does the Bureau/ Company/Agency recruit folks who have that many psychological blind spots? I'm also a little leery of 24 year-olds who fall for men 14 years their senior. Nice for them, but it seems to speak to some deep insecurity. All these factors made Celina a little hard for me to take.
expected more of this book. Here's a summary of my impressions. Hero is stupid. Heroine TSTL, too emotional, and utterly desperate to get into the hero's pants. And the utter stupidity of her always thinking he's her rock when he's flashing cold-hot-cold with her all the time!! Her life is in danger, but all she thinks about is how to get the hero to sleep with her.
This book has great characters and a story full of suspense. I love the way the story unfolds and the depths we see in the characters. There are fun parts and excitement and romance sprinkled in with HEA. Very entertaining!!
I tried, I really tried. I got 78% done with this book before I couldn't do it anymore. This book just dragged, the storyline was long and boring. Nothing kept my interest. I can't even remember the characters names because they made no impact on me.
Are you ready for a fast paced, action filled romantic suspense? If so, then look no further than Deadly Pursuit by Misty Evans. I really hope this book turns into a series. Cooper Harris, a seasoned DEA agent is the hero of Deadly Pursuit. The heroine, Celina Davenport is about 14 years younger than Cooper and is a rookie FBI agent who doesn't quite know when to follow protocol. Cooper is very controlled and serious. Celina is a wild card acting on her instincts and emotions. They both happen to be drawn to one another and not surprising, Celina is willing to act on that attraction, but Cooper, not so much.
Celina is an interesting character. I wasn't sure I liked her at the beginning the way she was practically throwing herself at Cooper, but the more I read the more I liked her and in the end I really admired her. I think characters like Celina make a book seem more real - when the characters don't always make the right choices, but act more as human beings than fictional superheroes (or heroines). Cooper has a wall built up around his heart and it was entertaining watching Celina chip away at that wall. At first I thought Cooper was just trying to do "the right thing" but I learned that he was also trying to protect himself from the emotions Celina was causing him to feel. He was torn and didn't like it.
The romance and intimacy in this story fit the characters well. I would have liked a little more, but I am not sure it would have changed the story and I hate when authors throw an intimate scene in when it doesn't really fit the pace of the story. This one has a great pace already.
In addition to Celina and Cooper's relationship, Misty has a boatload of action in Deadly Pursuit. When you are in need of the FBI and DEA to work together to track down an escaped convict there are going to be some messy things happening. Misty writes her stories that evoke emotions I don't always want to feel but are necessary to GET the story. I was fearful for the characters and anxious sometimes, but also had a feeling of happiness and comfort at certain parts. When all was said and done and the story came to an end I felt satisfied. Everything was tied up nicely and the ending was appropriate for the story.
I always enjoy Misty's books and this one was no different. If you are looking for a romantic suspense read that engages you from the beginning and is hard to put down because you can't wait to find out what happens, I highly recommend Deadly Pursuit.
Deadly pursuit is a fast paced, exciting, action packed adventure and I really enjoyed it. As the synopsis tells us – FBI agent Celina Davenport pulls off a feat no other could do, she found an ‘in’ with the Londano crime family, went under cover and seduced the mob boss – Emilio Londano - resulting in the collapse of his empire and his incarceration….. Only she didn’t expect him to escape, she didn’t expect he would go after the people in her life, she didn’t expect to become a target for a man with nothing to lose and a taste for revenge. It’s seems as though her only hope of surviving is through DEA agent Cooper Harris, a man she has been lusting after for a while but one who can’t &won’t give her what she needs. As they are pushed together in a game of cat and mouse, thrust into life threatening situations…. Will Coop’s walls come down, will he realise that he could have a future with Celina? If he can only help her survive. So, I’m a fan of Misty Evans - having read both her Witches Anonymous & Kali Sweet books - so when she asked for reviewers of her new book I jumped at the chance, even knowing it had zero paranormal activity :O Anyway, I’m so glad I took the chance because this was an awesome read and had a plot that is definitely worth making into a movie. We get a strong, capable lead female character in Celina, who will not give in and refuses to be the victim in both love & war, she is the type of person that should inspire teenage girls, even for her work ethic alone. Cooper was a fine leading man, a good alpha male, driven, determined and again extremely capable and would make any woman swoon. When they were together, the chemistry was electric and I thought the romance brought some lightness and happiness to an otherwise serious plot. Speaking of the plot, it was great – Mafia bosses, undercover female agents sent in to take them down, unrequited love, murder, romance… that’s without the twists and turns that came with it too and let us not forget some much appreciated sexytime. It was fast paced and exciting and it did read like a movie, I could imagine seeing it on my TV and loving it! it would appeal to both men & women alike and the best thing is… it’s only the first book in the Southern California Violent Crimes Taskforce series so there’s lots more where this comes from and I’ll definitely be reading the sequel. 4*s
Got in the Danger & Desire box set. Not my cuppa. Technically fine. I just did not like the main characters.
Sample Quotes: “You understand that last night was just…” he paused and Celina braced herself for what she knew was coming. “For fun.” “For fun,” she repeated, nodding her head as if she actually agreed. Nodded as if her heart wasn’t breaking. “There’s no Starbucks in our future.” The Terminator frowned. Celina shook her head at him. “This is the ‘last night was fun, but we’re just friends’ speech, right?” She watched his frown deepen. “But wait, we’re not really friends, either, are we Cooper? A friend would have called to check on me after I left California. A friend would have told me that Bobby was living in a wheelchair.” Drawing in a steadying breath, she plunged forward. “So what we shared last night was just sex—ungodly hot, fu&*-me-against-the-door sex—but just sex for you. A one night stand.” “No,” Cooper interrupted. “It wasn’t just sex, but…” He shook his head, tried again. “It was…” His eyes were no longer emotionless and Celina could see that he wished she could read his mind as easily as he seemed to read hers. “Last night with the storm and everything, it was like a different time, a different place.” “Not real,” Celina offered, suddenly able to read his mind quite clearly. “You were stranded in Iowa during a blizzard and I offered to keep you warm. I told you no one would know and that would have been the case if Emilio hadn’t called. You would have gone back to California this morning and last night would have just been a fantasy episode of Lost. Celina searched his face. “What if Emilio is out there, Cooper? What if he comes after you?” “Don’t worry about me.” He ushered his men, one by one, through the door. “If Emilio is out, you’re the likely target. Keep your doors locked and your gun on you.” He met her gaze, went still. “It was good to see you, Celina.” Then he was gone without a goodbye. Ronni looked at her, looked at the door, back at her. “At least he didn’t say, ‘I’ll call you’.”
“What’s wrong with you?” “Wrong with me?” “Yeah, you seem…happy. Did Londano slip on a bar of soap in prison and break his neck or something?”
First off, I’m exhausted. This book is full of action and suspense, and took my breath away many times. I honestly felt like I was watching an episode of CSI or some other crime show. It was intense.
*Phew*
Meet Celina Davenport, rookie FBI Agent who just brought down a top Mafia man, Emilio Londano, while cozying up to him undercover. It should be the peak of her career right? Um, nope. She’s rewarded by being shipped off to Iowa. This doesn’t go over well for the spunky, tough, independent, and a slightly wild Celina. She needs to be near the action, and Cooper.
Cooper is the strong, silent type. He’s the alpha male with a slightly tortured hero mixed in. Cooper was the leader of Celina’s team and the object of her affection. However, he didn’t return that affection…..or so he said.
When the supposedly jailed Emilio suddenly surfaces and threatens a slow and painful revenge against Celina, Cooper swoops in to the rescue (and her bed). Obviously playing protector suits Cooper because he finally gives in to the lustful feelings he has for Celina. But this man has a hard heart, and anything beyond that ain’t happening.
The race to find Emilio before he gets his hands on Celina is wild and keeps you on your toes. This guy is the ultimate bad guy. He’s sick, sadistic, but won’t get his hands dirty so he calls in the best killer around. What ensues is a game of cat and mouse between the ex-Mafia leader and the FBI/DEA.
The closer Celina gets to Emilio’s grip, the stronger Cooper’s feelings grow. Maybe he isn’t so hard-hearted after all.
From the first page to the last paragraph this novel is an intense thriller that will keep you guessing. No one is safe, and no one can be trusted. Emilio has allies everywhere, leaving Celina vulnerable and the perfect prey for his crazy mind games.
Misty Evans is my reigning Queen of Crime Fiction. I love her characters and the heart pounding action she brings to her novels. If you love a good thriller, you will love Deadly Pursuit.
I have read Misty's Kali Sweet series but this is the first non paranormal book I have read by her.
Celina Davenport, a rookie FBI agent, scored her first undercover bust of a crime lord. She became the darling of the FBI and her face became national famous after being featured on a national magazine. Fast forward one year later when Emilio escapes from jail and comes after her, members on her team and close friends.
Cooper Harris was the team leader that helped Celina bust Emilio the previous year. He is a veteran DEA agent and in lust with Celina, who is also attracted to Cooper.
Things get hot and deadly when Emilio goes after Celina killing everyone in the way to get to her in revenge for bringing down his empire and loosing everything he had.
Celina and Cooper dance around their feelings for each other for many reasons, Cooper because he doesn't want to get involved with a co-worker and he has also built up a wall around himself. Celina because of everyone around her getting injured or killed wants to protect him from what may happen.
I found there to be the right amount of romance and action, The writer got the balance right. I loved Celina, not only how strong she is but also her affection for her team members by not wanting them to put themselves in harms way for her. I loved how feisty she in how she confronts Emilio and his lieutenant.
This is the first in this series and I really enjoyed it. the characters are solid and believable, the story is well written and keeps you reading I am eagerly looking forward to the second book.
LOVED it! Breathtaking novel of suspense with an irresistible romance. Even though I have loved Misty Evans works since I first discovered her work, I was a little reluctant to read Deadly Pursuit because I was afraid that reading the story would be too intense. I should have trusted M.E.'s talent as a writer! While the suspense was tremendous, Evans wove such a beautifully balanced story of romance and general human interaction through this fantastic novel of intrigue, and her character were so brave but believable, that I didn't just manage to get through it, I LOVED it! I can even recommend this one to my fellow scaredy cats; it is well worth the nail biting. If you love romantic suspense and are not anxiety ridden, you have probably already read it; but if you haven't, you must! Cooper, Celina, and their story are too awesome to be missed
Since I am late coming to this party, I am not going to summarize the book; there are enough summaries available. I would rather spending the time delving into the copy of Deadly Deception that I just got today. Can't wait to read more about Ronni and Thomas!!! I love ME's characters.
First of all, thank you Misty Evans for the free ebook. It took me a while to get around to finishing the book, but here is my honest review.
The romance aspect of this book, sadly, did nothing for me. There wasn't enough explanation for what about Cooper that Celina fell so hard for. Sure, he's a hot guy. But is that it? Shallow. And I don't believe in love at first sight. Lust at first sight, sure, but there's gotta be something after that leads to love.
I couldn't relate or particularly like any of the characters either. Cooper's excuses for avoiding a relationship with her were lame, and Celina see-sawed between being a stupid victim and a kick-ass heroine.
Being a glass half empty kind of person, I tend to focus on the bad rather than the good. It's not that this book was all bad, I just only remember the negative impressions.
Even though I could have shot the main female lead sometimes and anybody who has read similar books will have no problem spotting the twists overall It's an enjoyable read.
This action packed suspense had it all. Romantic suspense fans be sure to add this one to your reading list.
From the opening scene of a undercover young FBI agent seducing and arresting the man every alphabet soup agency wanted to again having to bring him down after he escaped and caused so much death in her life you are glued to the pages.
Celina Davenport is just a rookie FBI agent but managed to get herself a potential career changing undercover job with SCVC if she can bring down the mafia leader. What got her through the undercover op was she would finally be able to act on her crush on the leader of the SCVC taskforce and join his team. What she got after the arrest was neither of those. She was turned down by him and then sent off to a small FBI office in Iowa after her face was plastered over Time magazine ruining her chances of undercover work ever again.
DEA Agent Cooper Harris was impressed with Celina’s work and did find himself attracted to her but being her senior from both a work stand point and in age he refused to give into the young FBI’s infatuation and walked away. Then 6 months later there worlds collide again in Iowa on an op that collides between the FBI and DEA. Not soon after its found out that Emilio the Mafia leader she helped put in prison has escaped and is coming for her but not before he kills the ones she cares about. The killer is ruthless in some of the ways he takes her friends down – I mean like in cringe worthy eww moments (love getting those moments). Cooper vows he will do everything to protect Celina which turns out to be harder than he thought in many ways. This book had every ingredient I look for in a romantic suspense/thriller book and I loved it.
This is the 1st book of the series. I read one of the other series first. I would start with this series if I were a new reader.
If you want to read what the book is about, read above the reviews.
This book is based upon a group of alphabet agencies working together as teammates who fall in love while working cases.
Our hero knows what he wants and it’s one of his operatives. Yet she, and all of the others that work for him, know he’s ok while at work, but personal stuff and area is a no go. However, he can’t get our heroine out of mind.
Our heroine is brave and yet stupid at the same time. Who would knowingly go a mafia headpin? And yet, she knows what she wants and what she wants is the one guy who doesn’t want her or any friends and it annoys her.
The plot is typical with working teams trying not to have a relationship. However, add the mafia side to it and when you get to know the hero’s backside about his marriage, failing at an operation, it all starts to make sense and gains perspective. However, our heroine dials right into what he needs and she decides this time she’s not going to take no for an answer. Along with help from our hero’s past and current partner, it gets very interesting. Our hero and heroine are very relatable and you develop a connection to them.
So... there are a lot of things that I don’t know about the FBI and DEA procedures but the TV had taught me that you don’t break your cover, never. Also, what’s the deal with the TIME’s cover? As far as I know, they need permission to do something like that and if they used she could have demanded their asses. If her photo was public, that’s it for her she can’t work in undercover, is she joking?! It’s not only her life that is in danger is anyone she knows.
If you can pass all of that... is still an okay book. I really don’t feel the love, she was like a kid who has been told she can't have ice cream after dinner, so she becomes obsessed with ice cream, and now that she has it? I think she likes it but that’s it, I’m not buying a love story here. Not even from him, he thinks she is sexy and he likes her but, that’s it, she is like the shinning new toy he has convinced himself he can’t have and now that he has I mean it’s nice but nahh... he totally doesn’t love her, he lusts after her, that’s it.
It seemed forced, contrived, like the story was being made to a recipe. Compared to mist books written in the 21st cent, it's average. The main characters anxiety over having a relationship when the aren't even working in the same agency was just silly. The recipe called for 1 quart of angst? The repeating of their fake dilemma was grating. And I skipped the sex scenes because they are getting old. 1/2 gallon of voyeurism us NOT necessary for good storytelling, let alone great story telling. But at least Misty doesn't butcher the English language. That's worth a star right there. The funnies part were a couple wrong words: yak instead of yack, and fichus instead of ficus.
"Deadly Pursuit" is the first book in the SCVC taskforce series, and this series is off to a fantastic start. FBI agent Celina arrested a mafia leader and is responsible for his illegal empire being gone. He has escaped prison and now has his eyes set on Celina. All of her friends and co-workers are on his radar too, even DEA Agent Cooper Harris who is assigned as her bodyguard. Celina and Cooper have to make sure that they don't let their past interfere with the task at hand, basically staying alive. I am a true lover of romantic suspense and this book is loaded with suspense, angst, action, friends and a little romance thrown in. I couldn't put it down once I started reading!!
5 stars I purchased Deadly Pursuit by Misty Evans November 17, and this review was given freely. This is a well crafted and suspenseful murder mystery romance with many twists, many murders, not overly graphic violence and an alpha male Special Agent Cooper who is struggling to maintain his strong commitment to duty while denying his attraction and love for rookie Celina. This full length novel flows easily, is full of action, and is the best/most complete piece of fiction I have read since Melissa Schroeder's books.
Initially Celina may have been a FBI rookie but she was prepared to bring down the head of the Londano Cartel. Celina has the hots for her DEA co worker Cooper aka The Beast but Cooper keeps her at arms length. All seems to end well with Emilio’s capture only to re-emerge when Emilio escapes prison and comes gunning for Celina and anyone else that gets in his way. Both Cooper and Celina are stubborn as and neither will give up to put Londano away again even if it means sacrificing any hope of the future together.

Deadly Pursuit (Southern California Violent Crimes Taskforce #1) by Misty Evans is a story full of action and suspense, thrills and revenge, murder and mystery, romance and many twists. The story is interesting but I wanted to slap our heroine, she needed to be knocked down a peg or two and our sexy alpha hero was afraid of commitment, like most of these stories. That aside I liked the premise of the story andt I did enjoy Misty’s writing style and that the story was told in multiple POV’s. Give it a go it was worth the read, with lots going on to hold your attention.
This is a full length thriller/romance with enough twists and turns to keep the reader concentrating. I've forgotten the body count, some of the deaths are particularly gruesome, so not for the sensitive reader. The heroine was a bit too much superwoman to be believable, almost bionic. Worth reading just for the sexy sexy hero. Recommended.
You ever get tired of the same old same old and some of the books you read. The same storyline over and over. WELL READERS ..... this series is different !This is the first book in the series and I'm hooked. A must-read and the series is a five-star knockout ! Buy and read , you'll not regret it !!!
Celina as a rookie undercover cop, a year on a sting operation, put a mafia leader behind bars. The glee was short lived, when threats, people dying trying to keep her safe. The safe houses are not safe, police officers are still dying. Is he the one, did he got out of jail. Will she live or only if Emilo is killed. Haunting, tense plot.
