(The Legend of the Gate Keeper #4)

Eric pulled a dagger from inside his shirt and sat down on the platform with his feet hanging off the edge. Holding the point to his neck, he said, “Since you seem to be so sure I’m the cause of all your pain, I will give you one chance to seek the revenge you lust for.” He smiled at the man. “I give you my word, I will not move. Come now, do your people a service and obtain the blood you seek.” The man just lowered his head, unable to say a word through his trembling lips.
Eric looked to the old woman holding the baby. He raised his head, still holding the dagger point to his throat, then pushed it in deeper as a trickle of blood ran from the small cut. “You say you lost your family, that your grandchild will never be able lead a normal life. I’m truly sorry for your loss, and I humbly offer my life in return. Someday you will be able to tell him you singlehandedly smote the evil that took his parents from this world.” Eric made a clicking noise with his tongue. “Come now, I promise you it will be easy. All you have to do is push, and justice will be done.” He jiggled the handle a couple of times, making the line of blood flow a bit faster. The old woman began to sob, nuzzling her cheek against the infant’s stomach.

Reborn, Gate Keeper #4

This episode flows much more smoothly. But I wish there were more episodes available or a final book for closure. I'm going to keep following this story, but I don't know for how much longer. I feel I am not getting enough story for the $ expended thus far. The quality of this story is all I could wish for however, so I think I will hang with it.

Jeff Gunzel has a lot of potential as a very enjoyable writer. However, I believe he may have fallen victim to the trap of publishing to soon. I have read Books 1 - 4 of the series. This review is for the first 4 books. I have posted this review on all four of these books pages. When I finish book 5 I will write a separate review on the whole series.

The story line is good and the plot arc moves quickly and keeps the reader engaged. The characters, at times, are complex and dynamic. You identify with them quickly and come to care about them. This has all of the basic ingredients for a good story.

The weakness is found in the writing technique, which can only be corrected by extensive red line sessions. The grammar is often poor. Some of the phrases are repetitive. The writer spends a lot of his words "Telling" about a scene rather then "showing" me the scene. Often a scene seems to be thrown in because the writer felt like writing it, even if it doesn't really help move the story line along. While I am one who loves a descriptive scene that helps me see, smell and hear the nature around the character, starting the book with several pages of it is a rookie mistake.

In summary, I read books 1-4 because I enjoyed the plot line and characters. But I was frustrated by the poor technique, the "telling" writing style and the over use of basic ideas that where repetitive in nature. Regardless, I will read the rest of the series because I find the characters engaging enough to over look the writing flaws.

3 STARS!!! Just too much! I really enjoyed the first 3 books, this one, not so much...

This just felt like it tried to be a great, monumental work like Shannara Tales or Eragon. A want a book to just flow, to become engrossed in the story, to feel like I'm actually there watching it unfold. Maybe it was so many main characters undergoing major changes, difficult magic to understand and having characters just changing to be magical somehow mastering skills instantly. Maybe it was the various enemies they fight, or the confusing local clan they engage with. Or maybe that so many of the characters were just plain confusing. I had looked forward to reading the rest of the series, but I will forego them to find my next favorite book. Happy Reading!!!

excellent! The storyline is amazing and getting more and more complex! The dialogue is a little cheesy at times but I love the characters so much I don't care!

This epic fantasy series gets better and better. More action, more battles and more twists and turns, as Eric and his friends delve deeper into the journey of the Gate Keeper.

Well-written and thoroughly enjoyable.

Highly recommended.
