Two short stories set at Christmastime from the Love Inspired Suspense "Texas K-9 Unit" series--Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy and Rescuing Christmas by Terri Reed. I enjoyed both of the stories. The leads were likable and I loved all the dogs. It was also nice to catch up with familiar characters--both human and canine--from the previous K-9 Unit books. Although this book is part of a series, it can stand on its own without reading the previous books.

I'm ready for Christmas and not in the mood to write up a full review. XD I usually push through and do it but I don't want too...lol...I've got Christmas baking to do and errands to run.

Anyway...both stories were moderately good, there were unrealistic moments in both but, overall, both were pretty good. I loved the dogs in both! I'll read just about anything if there's a dog in it...lol...so the fact that these connect to a whole series about a K-9 unit...yeah, not gonna say I won't be reading some of those. XD Because I probably will...

Will I complain about them? Maybe...but I'll still read them. XD

Recommend age 16+ because one character has a back story of sexual assualt.

Texas K-9 Unit Christmas is 2 short stories that take place in Sagebrush, Texas. It's part of the Texas K-9 Unit series for Love Inspired Suspense. All of these books are stand alone so you don't need to read them in order to enjoy this one.

The first story is Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy. I really enjoyed this one. It had more of a family feel to it. Emma and Lucas were childhood friends, so it made for an easy transition to a romance.

I also loved Emma's Aunt Bea. She was so sweet.

When Emma is attacked while working on her new diner, she meets her childhood friend and his K-9 partner. There is wonderful chemistry between these two.

I only wish that it wouldn't have been so easy to know who the criminal was, or at least the motives of the criminal. I found myself wanting to scream at Lucas to look to the past to find out who was after Emma.

Overall, this was a nice read, more on the romance side then the suspense.

Rescuing Christmas is just the opposite. This story is more suspenseful. Dog trainer Lily is being stalked. She escapes a kidnapper and runs straight for offer Jarrod Evans, whose dog she's supposed to be training.

For the most part of the story, you think you know who is after her...but Terri Reed throws you a curve ball at the end.

I liked that both Jarrod and Lily had things in their past that made them a little weary of getting close to people.

There was a lot of romantic tension between these two, but you didn't get the feel that this was a romance. This story was definitely darker and at times a lot more scary, complete with building blowing up and other assorted bomb threats!

Both were good reads and the K-9s from both stories were wonderful characters, though I have to admit Ranger and Max were my favorite police pooches.

Holiday Hero\Rescuing Christmas

4 stars
Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy

Is a short novella that starts off strong and keeps up the action. The characters are likable. The plot is someone breaks into Emma's restraint and demands the money. She fights back and is hurt. Emma's old best friend is their with his K-9 dog.
Emma has moved back to her home town to take care of her Aunt Bea who has memory problems.

The only real problem with the story is that it is too short. Would have liked a little more of everything.

Rescuing Christmas by Terri Reed

I enjoyed Rescuing Christmas. Too see some old friends from previous books and meet new ones.
This is a short novella. Clean Christian for both stories.
This story starts off with Lily running away from her kidnapper in the woods. She has no idea who or why she was kidnapped. She runs across a road and almost gets hit.
Jarrod was coming to Sagebrush to get his dog some training from Lily when he almost hits her. He sees she is injured and calls for help.
Jarrod is asked if he will help guard Lily and she can still help work his dog.
Lots of action, Drama and faith in God. I like Lily and Jarrod. Liked also the glimpse of how different K-9 dogs are trained.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review in exchange by Netgalley and Harlequin.

I haven't read any of Shirlee McCoy's previous books in the Texas K-9 Unit series, but I was still able to enjoy this book -- even without know any of the backstory to the minor characters.

I liked both novellas and I can't really pick a favorite of the two. Both had suspense and romance...I did like how in the first story the MCs knew each other growing up, so it kind of avoided the insta-love romance.

All in all, a good read. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

*I received a complimentary e-book copy of this book for my honest review. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

I totally loved these continuations of the K-9 series. Each story was heartwarming. Shirlee McCoy always hits the spot. The only thing that was missing from the second story was an epilogue. It left so many questions to what happened next. Otherwise, I totally love the main two characters and their growth.

2.5 for Holiday Hero
2ish for Rescuing Christmas

Thoughts and Plot for Holiday Hero

Emma Fairchild has come to Sagebrush Texas to help out her ailing aunt Bea, open a restaurant in her honor, and take a break from the big city where she left her ex. She wasn't anticipating someone attacking her as she left her restaurant for the day, or being rescued by her old childhood friend Lucas. Lucas is now a member of the city;s K-9 unit and has appeared to grown up well. Some things haven't changed though, like his love of old trucks, or the knowledge of what Emma enjoys most, or the fondness he has always had for Emma.

Emma doesn't plan to put down permanent roots in Sagebrush. Her plan is to stick around and help her auntie until she passes, get the restaurant up and running successfully, and then leave once her last personal tie to the city is gone. Only she forgot about Lucas who knows her so well. And after confirming that the prep is still after her, he's not going anywhere until she's safe.

This book is a bit more subtle about the christian fiction aspect of this book. While it has numerous christian romance cliches going on, it was a nice enough fluff read.

In Conclusion

A more subtle christian fiction that doesn't rub it in your face. Short and to the point. Feels like a bit of a insta-love despite the childhood friend background. I'll probably forget I've read it in a few short months because it's a pure fluff read to me. But all in all wasn't terrible.

Thoughts and Plot for Rescuing Christmas

Someone is trying to kill Lilly Anderson. Despite her using her mother's maiden name to disguise the fact her father is a judge in Dallas, someone has found her. Could it be her college love turned attacker?

Jarrod Evans is a Dallas policeman training with a new partner to become a k-9 unit cop. On the way to Sagebrush to meet up with dog trainer Lilly Anderson when he almost runs her over when she appears out of nowhere in the night he finds himself feeling overly protective of this pretty little woman.

This book...It's more interesting than the Holiday Hero story but is blaringly Christian fiction with God getting credit for just about everything, mother's attending prayer groups and therefore leaking information about the whereabouts of her daughter (which she wasn't supposed to do). Most of that can be made up for for various kidnapping attempts and bombings. lol Almost.

This one is an insta-love. No doubt about it. Aqua-eyes Jarrod and petite dirty blonde with gold highlights Lilly are into each other the moment they lay eyes on each other. Lilly makes the bold first move and then freaks out and tries to make Jarrod forget about it because heaven forbid a woman be a bit forward!

In Conclusion

God is constantly brought to the forefront. It's an Insta-love, but at least things explode.

Christmas time cases. This book had two short stories by Shirlee McCoy and Terri Reed.

Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy
After a few months of catching the main mastermind of a big case in Sagebrush, Emma bought the diner to achieve her dreams of owning a diner to cook her best dishes. She wanted to do some place else but she loved her aunt Bea so much so she decided to stay at Sagebrush to take care of her because her aunt have Dementia. However, the diner was previously own by a lady who was involved in the case and now someone that knew the previous owner is out to get her saying there is money hidden in the diner which she don't know of. She almost left to die but thank God her childhood friend Lucas was nearby at that time. He looked out for her and protect her and also her aunt Bea until the culprit is caught. Aunt Bea is just the sweetest hehe...can't really spoil the case you will have to read it to find out.

Rescuing Christmas by Terri Reed
K-9 trainer Lily met Jarrod in a scary way which is on the road. She was running away from her kidnapper and happen to come across Jarrod who was driving and he almost hit her. Because of that , he appointed himself to be her bodyguard because she is in danger. And worst she got to know from her father that the guy that tries to force on her is out from jail which make her really scared but she still go on working. Jarrod is her bodyguard and she is Jarrod's K9's trainer. As they get to know each other, they opened up to each other too and the feelings for each other grow. He protects her and she helps him with his secret. And there is a twist to the case but I can't spoil too much. hehe... you will just have to read to find out.

Love that all the characters depend on God to protect them and to give them the strength to go through these scary situation.

If you haven't read this Texas K-9 Unit series please do. It is be a lot of fun to get into investigation mode, guessing who is the true culprit and also enjoy a little romance. hehe..

I loved being able to revisit Slade McNeal's small town police force. The twin novellas had call backs to the earlier series (dogs and human partners alike) without being overly distracting. The reunion story had a stronger storyline. My biggest problem was it was unclear to me if the two stories were happening simultaneously. All in all, a nice escapist read.

Abigails father was killed by a Political group. He was a diplomat. At the funeral someone tries to kill Abigail. She has the Capital K-9 unit to protect. Her Dylan and his dog are in charge of the team and sparks are flying between him and Abigail.

Another really good book. I love the K-9 books. They are great and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Not enough emphasis on dogs and too much emphasis on romance. The other series on dogs and people are much much better.

Really enjoyed this story. It was fast paced and the characters were multidimensional. These two stories were a good ending for the Texas K-9 Unit series. Each of the stories in this series was unique in its own way and the characters were fun to meet. Definitely read all the books in this series.

Texas K-9 Unit Christmas is a pair of christian romance novellas; Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy and Rescuing Christmas by Terri Reed. A new edition of this pairing is scheduled to be released on November 5th 2013.

In Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy readers meet Emma Fairchild, who has returned to her childhood home in order to care for an ailing Aunt Bea. One night Emma is trying to paint and prep her new restaurant for its upcoming opening when she is attacked and left for dead. Emma's childhood friend, and current K-9 officer, Lucas Harwood finds her and starts on a search for justice. Can he get to the bottom of the attack, and perhaps find love along the way?

Holiday Hero was a cute story with some suspense. I enjoyed the reuniting of childhood friends, and first loves, becoming more. However the story did not stand out as fantastic for me. I liked Aunt Bea's character and the care that Emma has for her. I also liked Lucas for the most part. Emma was a decent character and I loved the danger and suspense that she faces, but for some reason I just could not connect to her. I think that it might have been because of my frame of mind while reading rather than any fault in the writing.

In Rescuing Christmas by Terri Reed, Lily Anderson is a K-9 dog trainer that has managed to escape a kidnapping but has a killer hot on her heels. Jarrod Evans was supposed to be her student, but after a fateful meeting he has declared himself her bodyguard until the threat has been dealt with. Now, more that just her life is at risk.

Rescuing Christmas was a novella that just struck me as a little too short. I wanted a little more about Lily and Jarrod. I know novellas are supposed to be short, and this is part of a longer series, but I felt like I wanted to know the characters better. I am fairly sure that these two characters, and several of the side characters, have significant background stories in the series, but since I have only read one or two books, I feel like I was missing some of the most interesting background and future details. My other annoyance is stemmed from the mystery, because there was no way for me to know who the big bad was. Every suspense or mystery should include a chance for the reader to actually solve the mystery, that is half the fun!

I did enjoy reading Texas K-9 Unit Christmas, and for the most part felt satisfied when it was over. I would recommend it to readers that have enjoyed the other books in the series or the other writing from either of the authors. For readers (like myself) that typically avoid christian romance, I will say that the religious moments were very well done and very in character for the most part. There were a couple moments that I felt like I was being reminded that I had to add the term "Christian" to any discussion to the book, but for the most part it was natural. The mystery and suspense portion was very well done, aside from the moment of frustration I mentioned above, and there were some very high action moments that worked very well.

A nice Christmas collection, and a lovely addition to the Texas K-9 Unit miniseries.

Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy ~ this one was my favourite. 5*

Emma Fairchild left Sagebrush leaving the bitter memories of her childhood with her parents behind. She never expected to come back, but her Great Aunt Bea has had a fall, and is also suffering with the onset of Alzheimers. Aunt Bea was a constant in Emma's life, and so she returns to take care of her. She buys Arianna's Diner (you read about Arianna & the diner in the series below) and starts to remodel and build a new life. But someone else has other plans. Someone knows a secret of Arianna's, and is going to get it...even if it means hurting Emma. Enter handsome K-9 Unit Police Lieutenant & childhood friend Lucas Harwood and his dog Henry ~ 2 heroes who will do anything to keep Emma safe.

Loved this reunion story, and I loved the link back to the mystery in the continuity with something Arianna had hidden.

Rescuing Christmas by Terri Reed. 3*

Officer Jarrod Evans drives through the Lost Woods on his arrival to Sagebrush with his new dog Max. He has an appointment with K-9 dog trainer Lily Anderson, who will train Max this week. He didn't expect to almost run her over!

Lily Anderson has just escaped her kidnapper. She has no idea who wants her dead. She only know her lifeis at risk...and so is her heart, when the very handsome Jarrod Evans becomes her bodyguard.

Texas K-9 Unit Christmas
Texas K-9 Unit Series Book 7
Holiday Hero by Shirlee McCoy
Emma Fairchild has returned to Sagebrush, Texas. Aunt Bea needs her help, the woman who was more to her than her own parents. As she gets ready to open a diner, one that has some bad history behind it, she's attacked. And her help and protector comes in her old childhood friend. Reminding her of some of the good memories from her past in this town.

Police Lt. Lucas Harwood returned to his small town after grieving for his wife. Lucas and his K-9 Henry has an important case. Catching and putting away the man who has attacked his friend. And just maybe after the case she'll reconsider taking a chance on men again. On him.

Rescuing Christmas by Terri Reed
Lily Anderson is a dog trainer for the K-9 Unit in Sagebrush and someone is out to hurt her. She's escaped a kidnapping but someone wants her dead. Her rescuer seems to be sent from God to watch over her. She feels safe with him, but can she trust him with her heart?

Jarrod Evans and his canine Maxine drove from Dallas to have Max trained. Imagine his surprise when the woman he almost runs over is the very one he came to see. When asked to be her bodyguard while she's in danger he gladly agrees to stay close to her.

These two stories are from the previous Texas K-9 Unit series that was released earlier in the year. There are six books in that series and you'll meet most of the characters and their dogs in those books. Murder, mayhem, romance and uniquely trained dogs are contained in the pages of these books.

Holiday Hero:

Lucas and Emma started out as rivals but soon became best friends while in school. Eventually the both left Sagebrush and did other things in life. Now Emma is back to stay with her aunt and open a restaurant to support her aunt who has Alzheimer's. several weeks before she's to open the restaurant she is attacked by someone looking for money.

Lucas has returned to Sagebrush and works with the K-9 unit with his shepherd mix dog, Henry. As he helps Emma and her aunt, and works on the case, he realizes that he still loves Emma and wants her to be a part of his life.

Rescuing Christmas:

Lily has taken over as K-9 trainer and at the same time getting away from her controlling father, a judge. When she's kidnapped, they can't be sure if it's her enemy or one of her high profile father.

Jarrod has come to Sagebrush to spend a week with Lily to train his dog. He meets her much earlier than planned and their relationship takes an unexpected turn. This was a good story that will keep you guessing til the end. Action packed.

Both stories reunite us with the officers and their dogs that we met at the beginning of the year in the Texas K-9 Unit series.
