Plantation Christmas Weddings
Sweet 4-in-1 collection of contemporary love stories intertwined with amazing history. Each story was unique and touching in its own way. First one –Christmas at Dunleith- made me laugh at the silliness of two soon-to-be in-laws. Even though the ending made me feel like there was something missing in between, the rest of the story – his cowboy charm and deep relationship with God amazed me and melted Marilyn’s heart into a paddle of new found love. It was very sweet. Second one –Christmas at Longwood- about a bestselling author and her childhood hero. I loved this one- went back to it a couple of times too. This particular story enchanted me with its history about the lady of Longwood plantation and her trials and deep faith. Made me reflect on my mini-trials in life and how they shattered my faith instead of strengthening it. God is with us through thin and thick it’s our choice to acknowledge His comforting presence. The third- Christmas at Brandon Hill-might not mean much to you if you are not married, but to married woman and to me particular it was very touching and very close to reality. After we marry we start putting accent on things like job and kids and we neglect our special other without even realizing it. I know my hubby reminds me of it often and to balance life and its straggles with our deep love for each other we go on dates. Just the two of us, and it feels like we are dating again. If nothing else this story will teach you to pay attention to your spouse and fight for true love. Amazing story, very funny at some very unexpected places, and a great lesson for life. The forth-Christmas at Monmouth.
All these stories are great and sweet but it is not just the main characters it particularly a very sweet reliable wedding planner that make miracles at weddings. But she has a story of her own, a very sad one – she was having a dream wedding of her own and was jilted at the altar. A shame, I know. But a blessing as well for she didn’t know what is truly important in life- not a dream wedding but a dream marriage. It takes one very smart bride and a particular ex-boyfriend to open her eyes and give her true happily ever-after.
Dear reader, take a ride through a historical Mississippi and let yourself enjoy the bliss of each story. They are very different with different ages and tempers – you wont be bored but you will definitely be touched while each characters life is being changed in front of you.. Enjoy!! I had a blast reading these!!

Set in Natchez, Mississippi in 2010, this four in one collection from Barbour Publishing features romance, a Christmas setting and antebellum homes with a contemporary backdrop. Each story was named after a plantation, where a wedding was to take place by a friend or family member of the main character. Below is a list of things I enjoyed and the things I didn't.

What I liked:

The setting - Natchez seems like a really interesting place! I would love to learn more about the homes and the struggles the owners faced during the Civil War.

What I didn’t like:

Only one of the four stories really gave a good history of the plantations. It seems like there were some really neat settings in and around the houses that could have been pulled into the stories more.

All of the characters were shallow, except for Meredith and Gary in the second story.

In two of the stories, the hero and heroine go from “this relationship is so over” to “I really want to make this work” in a matter of seconds. (And I mean, standing in the middle of a highway screaming at each other at the top of their lungs kind of argument!) I’m not one to complain often about fictional romance being unrealistic, but I felt there was some of that in the third and fourth stories. Things moved back and forth way too fast for me...even for a short story.

The weddings themselves were not for any of the main characters. It was always someone’s friend or child getting married. It seemed cheesy that all four stories had the exact same plot.

Conclusion: It is always a challenge for me to write an objective review on novellas because they go by so fast, there is hardly any time for the author to develop depth to the plot and characters. However, I have seen it done well, which made realize that the stories in this book really lacked in one, or both, areas. But what really made me give such a low rating was that none of the stories felt “Christmas-y.” You could put every story in a regular romance collection and never notice that it was supposed to be centered around a national holiday. In fact, the first two stories were set around Thanksgiving more than Christmas. As much as I hate giving a bad review, I have to be honest and say I wouldn’t recommend this collection. On the other hand, I love to travel and though I’ve never been in Mississippi much, I will be adding the plantations of Natchez to my bucket list. The second story in the book did an excellent job of including a lot of local history, and it wet my appetite for more!

About The Authors:

Sylvia Barnes thought after retiring early as a manager for BellSouth, now AT&T, she would sit on a swing and drink coffee. However, she opened a gift shop/tea room for three years, served as a part-time court/deputy city clerk, and worked in her county's after school program before finding a yellow pad on which she formed her first novel. Sylvia teaches a Sunday School class and is active in many church activities. She and her husband, J. W., live in the country outside of Pelahatchie, Mississippi, with numerous dogs, cats, armadillos, and moles. And, of course, there was Fred, the possum, who came by his decease between the teeth of her two dogs. They have two grown daughters and three grandchildren.

Cynthia Leavelle - After a childhood of imagining herself as a writer, Cynthia thought of a story idea one day while rocking her first child. From that rough start, she has written a number of inspirational stories and devotionals and used them with her teaching and church groups. More recently, the idea for a novel about the love story of the Biblical characters of Salmon and Rahab took shape in her mind. That novel, The Cord published by Crossbooks, came out in October of 2010. Meanwhile, she has begun a sequel with the working title of Acsah and Othniel. Married for more than thirty years, her writing draws on lessons learned from raising her three sons and teaching English as a Second Language to international students.

Virginia Vaughan was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi and has never strayed far beyond those boarders. Blessed to come from a large, Southern family, her fondest memories include listening to stories recounted by family and friends around the large dinner table. She was a lover of books even from a young age, devouring gothic romance novels and stories of romance, danger, and love. She soon started writing them herself.
After marriage, two kids, and a bitter divorce, Virginia realized her characters needed the same thing she needed--the loving grace of Jesus Christ. She devoted her life and her writing to His glory and has since watched God swing open doors for her to walk through. Now a mother of two grown sons and one daughter-in-law, she writes and speaks about the healing grace and restoration power of Jesus Christ. "If Christ can restore himself from the grave then he can surely restore me from the choices I've made."

Lorraine Beatty was born and raised in Ohio but now calls Mississippi home. She started writing stories for friends in middle school and never stopped.

My Thoughts On The Book: This four-in-one set delighted my senses beginning with CHRISTMAS at DUNLEITH by Sylvia Barnes. Beau Burnham,a large, rugged, handsome, praying "redneck" farmer meets his son's soon to be mother-in-law. Marilyn McLemore is an also-widowed, swanky, Denver lawyer. Their kids are betrothed, so the two put on the family face and survive the ordeal on Christmas Eve. Sparks fly as the story unfolds. What a wonderful story of faith, prayer, love, and history. Story number two is CHRISTMAS at LONGWOOD by Cynthia Leavelle. Rejections in life can leave lasting hurt. Meredith, a KS bestselling author, and Gary, a history teacher in their old HS, both suffer from school trauma. When the two meet again the reader wonders if their adult Christian lifestyles and faiths will help them overcome their hurtful past. Can the history of Longwood be a tie that binds? This story was one of my most favorite. The history of Longwood and the mending of hurt feelings really captivated me and touched a nerve hidden deep from my own high school years. The third story was CHRISTMAS at BRANDON HALL by Virginia Vaughan.
Devon's sister's Christmas wedding at Brandon Hall appeared to be the needed opportunity for Sandra to serve Devon with divorce papers so they could end their twenty year marriage. Weddings are about love, and Sandra struggled with the feelings of LOVE for Devon and anger towards him. Devon's family and their college-age twins put on match-maker disguises and try and show the two that they belong together. This is a touching story of God's intervention in what could be the biggest mistake the two would ever make. The last story is my other favorite. CHRISTMAS at MONMOUTH by Lorraine Beatty is about a Wedding Planner with the unusual name of Wreath. Our heroine suffered from a past love wound. When Micah, a ghost from her past, reenters her world, like changes drastically for Wreath. It is a Monmouth task to put sparkle into the Christmas.

Great collection of novellas bursting with Christmas spirit! Each book was a quick read that had some depth to them. Wish a couple of them were longer since I feel that some of the characters still had much to share. Oh well, I guess that I will let my imagination wonder lol. Great read!!! Happy Reading!!!

I know I shouldn't compare--I enjoyed all of the books inside this compilation--but I loved the last one. The second chance romance really shocked when the hero made the heroine realize that she'd done to him what had been done to her. Forgiveness is a two-way street and thank the Lord for it.

I loved that each of the four stories happened at the same location the Plantation in Mississippi which was popular with couples for their wedding.

In Sylvia Barnes, Christmas at Dunleith, the story focused on a widow who came to the Plantation because of her pending marriage and found her daughter's father-in-law at first a loud mouth county man who used words like "little women" but found as she became more acquainted that they meshed.

In Cynthia Leavelle, Christmas at Longwood, the story focused on a successful writer who has returned to her home where she had been labeled or imagined that the persons at the school didn't like her because she came from the other side of the road. On her return visit she found lots of what she had imagined was incorrect including her relationship with previous classmate. The book shows how they reconnected ending in marriage.

Virginia Vaughan, Christmas at Brandon Hall focus on a couple who has separated and may be heading for a divorce. They have been brought together by their two children and the wedding of her sister-in-law. Events happened as they both looked at their selves and realized that this marriage was is saving.

Lorraine Beatty, Christmas at Monmouth features the wedding planner who was working for the previous three families and her past experience of being jilted at the altar changed her focus to just work. Into this came a previous friend who helped her in taking responsibility for forgiving and closing a chapter in her life in order to reach happiness.

This book has 4 wonderful stories that will draw any reader in and hold them until the very end. I didn't have a favorite over any of the others as I enjoyed each one. Everyone deserves a second chance mo matter what the situation. As long as people can work it out. We have a writer who falls for a nice history buff as she has known him for a few years but never did look at him other than a friend. When she finally realizes he has loved her for a while will she turn away?

Then we have a mom who doesn't want to let anyone in. She is a lawyer who goes by the book and works a lot of hours. When she meets her daughter feature father in law he tries his best to get her to look at all of them as her new family when she sees him as a hunk of a man but not sure what to do with him. Can he convince her to take a chance on love?

A divorce couple who can try again after everything they have been through. Can thy rekindle their love they let go so fast?

A wedding planner who finds love after she is jilted at the alter can she find real love this go around? She wants to help everyone else out and make them happy but what about her.

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book for an honest review.

Don’t you just love sappy love stories around Christmas! These 4 stories were such fun to read. I liked that they had real life situations for the couples to deal with. The writing on each story was excellent. There was no part in any of the stories where I was bored or not entertained. I gave this book 5/5 stars. I thought the authors did a good job of writing real to life characters. I especially liked that each story was short and ended with a plausible ending. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian romances set around Christmas time.

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Four different stories all set in historic mansions of Natchez.

My favorites were Meredith and Gary (Christmas at Longwood) and Wreath and Micah (Christmas at Monmouth). Both involved couples reunited after years apart, but it was the way the men continued to love the women and want them to be happy even if they were apart that I really liked.

My least favorites were Christmas at Dunleith (Marilyn and Beau went from antagonism to love too quickly) and Christmas at Brandon Hall (Sandra and Devon both acted immaturely and irresponsibly).

Individually, I would have rated my favorites five stars and my least favorites three stars, hence the average four star rating.

This was a nice collection of short stories. All of them had real life problems to deal with and centered around relationships and the Christmas season. They were also great Christian Romances with a deep connection to historical Mississippi.  All four were well written and had believable endings.
Completely recommended for fun, easy, reading for the holiday season.

It is important that I mention I was given this book by NetGalley for a honest review.  All opions are mine.

I especiallly enjoyed Christmas at Monmouth when the wedding planner met her okd boyfriend. the things Grace, a bride, said about inviting the Lord to her wedding, and about it bbeing about both bride AND grroom, not just the bride. very good writing by Lorraine Beatty. great books!

Excellent set of books

Each one, set in Natchez, was a story of love conquering whatever issues life threw at the characters--God's love and human love. Great romances.
