3.5 To Catch a Thief, Cat and Mouse, Sexy Stars * * * ½ Spoiler Free Sometimes I will start reading and a little nudge will start in the back of my mind. It will call out to me and say… this seems familiar… hmmm…where did you read something like this… why are you thinking you may have some sense of this… and then it dawned on me… I felt like I was in the middle of the To Catch a Thief movie or television show… and this was not a negative at all.
We have beautiful, leggy, downright stunning Alexis Foley as our main character. She goes by Alex and is a co-owner with ex-military men doing security work for the well to do. Her field of expertise is Art. I am talking about the type of work that is auctioned at top art houses around the world. We are talking landmark numbers and pieces which only a handful can see unless they are hanging in a museum somewhere.
Alex is with a dear client, all dolled up for a high profile auction for works of art, such as Degas and Renoir. This is a social time with Max, a very commanding businessman she has protected from his ex-wife. She is a secret weapon in the world of security… a beautiful woman who will kick butt with the best of them as well as handle reporters and paparazzi without breaking a sweat.
As Max and Alex enter the auction, he lets her know he has referred Coleson Anderson to her; just there is one little detail he failed to tell him, Alex Foley of Body Armor is not a man…. So this meeting which will be taking place shall be interesting, per Max. Of course, as this conversation is taking place, Cole Anderson comes into the room. He is the A-type personality, billionaire, philanthropist businessman, and has the unfortunate cross to bear of being excruciatingly handsome, dark, powerful… just all man.
Max introduces her as Alexis, keeping the secret of who she is. The meeting sets of surprising sparks in her… something that hasn’t happened in a while. As they discuss the art and social connections, he is assessing her as a woman, and liking what he sees.
Alex in her way of observing everything in the room notices a big red flag. She recognizes a very proficient art thief. Now how would she know this… well, this is the hook of her ability in protecting her clients; Alex’s mother is a cat burglar. Alex grew up in this world…her first reading material was not children’s books but blueprints and security systems of mansions; her picture books were coffee table books of classic art from around the world and “Uncles and Aunts” were fences or other cats. With this indoctrination, it would be natural to follow that path. But Alex saw the big picture and decided to be on the legit side but straddling the line by working with both sides… protecting her clients by putting it out there “these are my people, leave them alone and I will leave you be”… and it has worked for her.
As she follows this cat’s vision, he is zeroing in on Cole and the Renoir, and Alex knows this is going to be an issue. Cole wins the auction, takes the painting home and Alex follows the cat to Cole’s house. She sneaks into the townhouse as this theft is going down and feels compelled to stop it. Things go sideways; Cole comes down during the theft, the cat is about to shoot him and Alex is there to throw Cole down getting grazed by the passing bullet as the cat escapes. Alex also makes a quick exit after seeing Cole is clear. Police come, statements are made and Cole wants justice for this break-in.
Alex takes care of her injury and meets with Cole in his office to discuss his security as planned. Cole, skeptical and surprised she is the Alex Max referred, take it all in. He hears of how she is an asset in protection for someone like him as the possible opponent never sees her as what she really is… an adversary which allows surprise to work in her favor. Discussion of handling PR, other distractions and the theft attempt happen all the while both Cole and Alex are drawn to each other. Alex is not afraid of this pull but there has always been a line she never crossed… getting physical with a client… and now with Cole insisting she move into the townhouse to oversee the security and him presents a huge challenge because he wants her and is used to getting whatever he sets his mind on…Always.
Over the course of this book the chemistry between Alex and Cole was really quite believable…close quarters, life and death looming power, and lust all of these elements came into play. The times together were intense, smexy, and not just for show.
There also was reasonable conflicts due to stereotypes of society and the concern for those we love… how do we let others take care of us for our own good when can we step away and let someone do what they know how to do without feeling they must protect that person. Cole had that challenge as he started to fall hard for Alex, could he let her do what he hired her to do, look out for him rather than he taking care and protecting her when things became dangerous.
This book was fun, fast, and very detailed in giving me a great back story with mystery and intrigue. Rae Rivers did an excellent job of putting the reader in the world of high stakes art and wealth. She wrote a prologue which hinted at many things, setting the tone for the book. There was also a real story with real parts to it. I mention this without giving anything away…as it would ruin the read. I will say though, I was a little disappointed there was no mention after the book’s end of the actual events which might have been the inspiration for her tale, the reader might want to learn of it. I just happen to have been aware of them due to reading an incredible non- fiction book so I felt others might have been interested as well.
If you like art, New York City, mystery and hot sexual sparing with characters who are fully formed, then this read is for you… it certainly was for me.
A gifted copy was provided by author/publisher for an honest review.
Definitely the most awesome Rae Rivers read ever ! The read tells of Alex and how she is hired to protect sexy billionaire Cole Anderson.
Someone is out to steal his latest acquired art work, the Renoir, and because Alex has experience and knowledge of both the cat burglar world and the dealings of the police she is the perfect candidate to ensure the priceless Renoir remains safe and sound in the hands of Cole.
But once she starts protecting Cole, she not only breaks the rules by falling into bed with him, but also soon realizes it's not only the Renoir they thieves are after, they are out to kill Cole and will stop at nothing to finish the job.
The real question, can she protect the man as a client and as the man she loves, or will she need to give up and walk away all together to protect the mystery of the century?
I totally loved this read. It had something for every reader , kick-ass action, blazing hot sex, tender romance and mystery. I adored that the author let the hero and heroine both be equal in being able to fight with the toughest of thieves. In most reads we find the heroine lacking in being able to stand up and fight back, they can do it verbally but when it comes to using their fists it is always the hero that steps in to safe the day.
There is of course nothing wrong with this, as I'm sure every female reader will agree with me, it is rather nice to have a man offering you his ultimate protection. But it was very refreshing to see a heroine that can use her fists just as well as any hero out there.
It let the relationship between Alex and Cole, form on a whole new level which I thoroughly enjoyed. The most fascinating part of this read was of course the mystery behind who wants Cole dead, where the stolen art works from fifth-teen years ago has disappeared to and why the Renoir is so important.
It was brilliant to have a good old fashioned mystery laced with romance and I could not stop myself from wanting to know it all, I could not put this read down even if someone had payed me a million dollars it would definitely not have let me give this read up!
The author also described the artwork with such vivid detail it was as if I could reach and out and touch them all, absolutely stunning Rae! I highly recommend this read for every reader out there, seriously SEXY!
I'm taking away a message of life has many sides but when we tend to stay between the lines instead of picking a side and sticking to it, something will eventually come around to knock us from the fence and if you're not prepared you will go down in flames.
5/5 star review "Does she protect the man or the mystery ?"
This is absolutely my favourite Rae Rivers book so far.
From the very first page I was hooked by the engaging heroine. The word 'feisty' gets bandied about so much these days that it's almost become meaningless. Alex is the true embodiment of 'feisty'. She's a strong woman, kicking butt in a man's world.
But like many women who work in 'masculine' jobs, she has a hard time finding a man who can cope with her having such balls. Enter Cole Anderson, a man who is a worthy match for such a strong heroine. I fell in love with Cole practically from the moment he appeared on the page.
This story is fast-paced, gripping, and I loved the car chases, gun fights and twists that came with it.
Our world is an increasingly complicated one, and the lines between 'good' and 'bad' are increasingly hard to distinguish. This book explores the grey areas in between, and I really enjoyed that aspect.
Even when I had to put the book down (because my plane landed) the story stuck with me, and the next free moment I had I was reading again.
That's what this book will do to you. It'll keep you turning the pages to the very end. And then even after you've put it down, you'll still be thinking of it... and smiling to yourself!
Great Story Telling. Excellent Romance with Suspense...loved it.
Clever read with romance and suspense. I was so pleasantly surprised.
Cole Anderson, a billionaire, is targeted for his priceless Renoir painting. Someone has his art in their sights. He needs security and hires Alex Foley...assuming this person is a man. He needs 24 hour, around the clock protection....and he is not sure this Alex, the woman, will be the right fit.
Alex Foley is beautiful, sexy and feisty. She's a tough cookie who works within the gray area of the law protecting her shields and their art collections. She learned at her mother's knee, a seasoned cat burglar that the law has never been able to bring down. Alex has chosen to work the right or should I say gray side of the law unlike her mother whom she deeply loves. Can she get the job done and help solve a museums art theft that happened many years ago?
An interesting little story of love, life & larceny. Ms. Rivers writes an compelling story that pulls you to follow along while you root for the good guys to find the answers to the mystery without any more people being hurt.
Really enjoyed the suspense of the characters ...recommended for any lovers... love the infection..... love the tenderness..... love the relationship between the two major characters and a great storyline
I am familiar with Rae Rivers' other books which are The Keepers Series and they are more focused on the paranormal genre, so this book was very different and unexpected.
Alex Foxley is a woman that you do not want to get into a fight with, whether you are a woman or a man! She is strong, sexy and extremely independent and knows all about the art world, having a Mother who is a cat burgler! But instead of following in her Mother's footsteps, Alex has set up her own security company that prevents these kind of burglaries and she is regularly hired by wealthy clients with incredibly expensive paintings to protect. She is a well known and recommended bodyguard and her next client to hire is Cole Anderson, a billionaire to ensure that his priceless painting, The Renoir stays out of the cat burglers hands. But can their relationship stay strictly professional or will they be heading towards dangerous territory?
I really liked the fast pace of this novel and there were some very steamy scenes. This was just like The Keepers series and I loved this aspect. Rae always makes her female characters strong, but at the same time having that vulnerable side.
I thought the sexual tension between Cole and Alex was written really well and I definitely wanted them to get together.
The prologue at the beginning had me wondering literally the whole way through the book what had happened and what it was referring to. I even questioned Alex and Cole, wondering if it had something to do with them. I did not figure out until the author revealed it to us!
I did enjoy this, but I think I prefer Rae's paranormal books. However that is not to say that this one is not a good read, just not my usual genre choice of book.
No love amongst thieves 3 stars Hotness factor: it’s hot, it’s very hot
I’m all about strong female characters and Alex Foxley started the book being just that, great strong female character. She stopped a robbery and saved billionaire Cole Anderson. He hired her for his protection, but sparks fly between them… I didn’t care much about Cole, apart from being nice looking I found him too much if an alpha male for Alex. We’re also missing a lot information about both characters, like their age and origins. The story is set in New York, but Cole speaks a lot like a Brit. It could be part of the mystery, but it threw me off a few times. The pace was a little slow for my taste, especially when it comes to a mystery, but the love scenes were hot and I like the ending, as it opened a lot of possibilities. A sequel, maybe? Overall, this was an entertaining, sexy tale about the art world and its thieves. The prologue was very enticing and pulled me in. I knew who “did it” from the beginning, but it was still nice to it unraveling. I RECEIVED AN ARC IN EXCHANGE OF THE HONEST REVIEW
4.5 stars. Rae Rivers has an amazing ability to write action and suspense. Initially, I couldn't relate to the heroine in this book as she was very tough and independent, unlike myself but as the romance progressed, Rae helped me get a glimpse into her vulnerable side. I ended up thoroughly enjoying reading about a very different heroine to the usual.
I loved the way the sizzling chemistry between her and Cole developed into love and brought out her soft, feminine side. He was absolutely perfect for her and she for him. The romance was sexy, gripping and filled with suspense yet immensely romantic at the same time. Rae has a neat, easy-to-read style in that you don't even think of the words but just the story. I loved learning about the world of stolen art and cat-thieves - an added treat in the mix.
Really enjoyed all the art references, great relationship between hero and heroine. Also nice to have an equally tough pairing, no female taking the back seat.
I could see a series with these two fighting the criminal underworld together...
This is book was way fun and so very sexy!! It has all of my favorite themes... romance, suspense, and kick ass action.. I would love to see more of Cole and Alex..crossing fingers for another book!! :)
Ok, it started of really good...but it kinda got annoying how the guys seemed to butt in all the time and didnt trust/have faith in our heroine. I stopped reading after 3/4...
Really enjoyed this book. Lots going on to keep you reading and characters you can sympathise with and adore. Heat in every way, sparking a great romantic read.
