Malinda thinks her life is over after the death of her father and her subsequent eviction from the only home she’s ever known. She, along with her sister, answers an advertisement for mail order brides and their lives change. She agrees to marry a banker in a small town in Colorado, because she refuses to be afraid of where her next meal will come from ever again. When she arrives in Colorado, she immediately falls for the handsome gentleman who picks her up at the train station, but he’s her sister’s fiancé, not hers!
This is the first read by Kirsten Osbourne that wasn't awesome for me. The writing was good it was just that I didn't like either the hero Wesley or the heroine Malinda. I didn't hate them but they both came off childish, stubborn and closed minded. They would both jump to conclusions and then not talk about their problems. On top of that I felt Malinda came off money hunger even though it was said over and over that she was just fearful. Still even with not caring for either the h or h I didn't hate the book. I was just an okay read for me.
This is the fifth book in a fairly long series. The intimacy in this series is described but not rude or crude in my opinion. If you have read the Dalton Brothers, you will recognize Beckham, MA, as not a good place to be a young women. They all flee from there.
Harriet Long is our matchmaker. She is widowed and rich with a limp and a secret. She makes matches for brides but she always tells them that they do not have to stay in bad (hazardous) marriages. We learn a little more about Harriet in each novel.
This novel tells the mixed up story from Malinda and Wesley's point of view. If you were frustrated with Malinda in book 4, much is explained. There are some interesting details of life like church welcoming committees and the process of making new friends. The tension in this book is caused in part by Malinda's desire to make her own money by sewing for others.
Mail Order Mistake is a bit unique in this series as it is a continuation of sorts of the previous book, Mail Order Mix-Up in which two brothers, Patrick and Wesley send off to Harriet Long’s Mail Order Bride service in search of brides and two sisters, Ellen and Malinda respond. In the previous book we got the story from mainly Ellen and Patrick’s view point with Malinda and Wesley being almost secondary characters. Now we get the story from Wesley and Malinda’s view point.
Unfortunately, I didn’t like Malinda very much in her sister’s story, and that dislike continues on. I had hoped that hearing her side would change my opinion of her, and it may have softened a bit but not enough to say I enjoyed this character. Yet, the story is still good, I simply couldn’t connect with the heroine at all. Malinda allows her fear to take over her life. She’s afraid of the marriage bed so she asks for more time… yeah, the groom is going to go along with that. She is afraid of being poor and without food again so she sees her monthly allowance for household expenses and immediately thinks of ll the things she cannot buy. When the chance to make some money on the side from a skill she enjoys Malinda doesn’t tell Wesley. She hides what she is doing and then seems surprised when her husband is angry that she won’t trust him, or talk to him about the important things. I just… I wanted to see this young lady get past her fears and she simply could not. Those fears are what got her into trouble with her family, her husband time after time. I’m not convinced even now at the ending of her story that Malinda isn’t harboring fears that she just isn’t mentioning.
In all, even though I couldn’t connect with Malinda I did enjoy this story for the other characters and the chance for a bit more about Harriet Long.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
This is book two of Ellen and Malinda’s story. This time the focus is on Malinda and Wesley. I came into this disliking Malinda from her whining and dragging the situation in the first novel. But in the second book her fears are emplaned. She is a natural worrier and her emotions are all over the map. Once understanding, Wesley sits back enjoying the show.
Malinda meets three women at a tea. One becomes her best friend. Malinda is an excellent seamstress and fulfills a community need. She makes dresses and baby clothes. She also made shirts for a miner. Wesley is OK with her business as long as she leaves time for him and doesn’t work through the night.
This is a sweet novel. Fights usually end in angry kisses and making love. These two hardheaded mates are made for each other.
What happens when 2 Sisters and 2 brothers correspond and become betrothed. This is a companion book to mail order mix up... What happens can only be described as a comedy of errors..... another winner by Kirsten Osbourne.
Malinda and Wesley married the same day as Ellen and Patrick. They got off to a rough start because Malinda was so obsessed with money. Things were going fairly well for them and then Wesley got shot. Sweet romance story of how they came together.
The Brides of Beckham is a nice little short story series about Mail Order brides and the surprises they find when they arrive at their destination. There was sexual content, but otherwise, a fun little set of stories. If you read one, read them all. Simple stories. This story is about a girl who isn't quite ready to get married but is forced into it because of her father dying and having nowhere to go. Her sister is going to marry so she follows. They end up switching grooms because they each fall for the other, but for Malinda, it's hard because she is scared of what will happen to her if anything ever happens to her husband. She does a fine job of taking care of that issue though. In this last book we do learn more about the Bride Broker.
I have found I really am enjoying this series of books. The storylines are fairly predictable, but sometimes it is nice to just sit and read something that doesn't require any deep thinking! The books are short enough to be read in one or two sittings, and the personalities of all the characters all come down to good, decent people who need someone to love and care about. Can't go wrong with happy endings! I hate reading books that make me cry, avoiding them whenever possible, no matter how good the reviews may be!
This was the 2nd book about 2 sisters. The 1st part gave you one point of view and this one another. It was very confusing the way the author wrote it. Besides the characters outlook and view of things got to be very irritating after awhile.
That being said the book was different because of the same view points I listed above with getting the other view point of conversations between the sisters.
It's an ok read but it let me down and annoyed me due to the main female character.
Malinda finally makes a decision to marry Wesley. This is her story, she is so worried about having money saved that she neglects to inform her husband about the sewing jobs she has taken. It causes problems, but they get resolved, and she agrees not to take in too many jobs.
malinda doesn't come off as likeable in book 4 but this book allows you to see her reasoning, why she seems fixated on money this book felt a little repetitive but that is to be expected worth reading
-Malinda and Wesley (goes with bk4 grooms are brothers and brides are sisters) Loved this story that is well written with charismatic characters and witty dialogue. Their story has a satisfying HEA.
