The Black Robe is an 1881 epistolary novel by famed English writer, Wilkie Collins. The book relates the misadventures of Lewis Romayne, and is also noted for a perceived anti-Catholic bias. As the story begins, Romayne and his friend, Major Hynd, are in Boulogne to visit Romayne's aunt, who is dying. While there, Romayne attends a card game, where he has an argument with a corrupt card sharp, the General, who challenges him to a duel. However, the general doesn't turn up himself but nominates his son, an accurate shot, who should win the duel. Romayne absolutely does not want to fight but is goaded into doing so. Against the odds, he accidentally kills his opponent, and the screams of the man's brother after the death come to haunt Romayne for the rest of his life.

About the author

Wilkie Collins was an English novelist and playwright, best known for The Woman in White (1860), an early sensation novel, and The Moonstone (1868), a pioneering work of detective fiction. Born to landscape painter William Collins and Harriet Geddes, he spent part of his childhood in Italy and France, learning both languages. Initially working as a tea merchant, he later studied law, though he never practiced. His literary career began with Antonina (1850), and a meeting with Charles Dickens in 1851 proved pivotal. The two became close friends and collaborators, with Collins contributing to Dickens' journals and co-writing dramatic works.
Collins' success peaked in the 1860s with novels that combined suspense with social critique, including No Name (1862), Armadale (1864), and The Moonstone, which established key elements of the modern detective story. His personal life was unconventional—he openly opposed marriage and lived with Caroline Graves and her daughter for much of his life, while also maintaining a separate relationship with Martha Rudd, with whom he had three children.
Plagued by gout, Collins became addicted to laudanum, which affected both his health and later works. Despite declining quality in his writing, he remained a respected figure, mentoring younger authors and advocating for writers' rights. He died in 1889 and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. His legacy endures through his influential novels, which laid the groundwork for both sensation fiction and detective literature.

Leer Wilkie Collins siempre es bien. Y ya está.

Tiene novelas mejores que otras, hay en él cosas que no me acaban de convencer, como las situaciones que resultan demasiado forzadas, las coincidencias milagrosas, y el hecho de que siempre haya tenido la impresión de que es demasiado deudor de su buen e influyente amigo Charles Dickens. Pero todas sus obras se leen con la misma facilidad que se bebe un vaso de agua, y que enganchan mucho, con personajes muy bien construidos y un trasfondo de critica hacia la sociedad de su época que se esconde, muchas veces, tras tramas de misterio y romance enfocadas en impactar y resultar intrigantes para el lector . Es un autor que, tras su aparente liviandad, esconde mucho y al que hay tener en cuenta. Y por todo eso siento especial debilidad por él.

Publicada originalmente en 1881 , “La Sotana Negra” es, quizás, una de sus obras más desconocidas para el gran público. Está protagonizada por Lewis Romayne, un rico hacendado de personalidad retraída y nerviosa, que vive centrado en sus estudios y escritos, prefiriéndoles a la compañía de sus semejantes. En un viaje a Francia, se ve envuelto en un trágico accidente que le hará contraer una enfermedad nerviosa. En esas, aparecerán en su vida dos personajes que lucharan por su alma y su felicidad (y sus riquezas): por un lado está Stella Eyrecourt, una hermosa muchacha que se enamorara de él, y en cuyo pasado hay un sórdido secreto. Por el otro, encontramos al retorcido Padre Benwell, un cura que es, además, un destacado miembro de los Jesuitas, él cual buscara por todos los medios convertir a Romayne al catolicismo para que done a la iglesia de Roma sus tierras, las cuales fueron confiscadas en su momento por el rey Enrique VIII durante la Disolución de los Monasterios.

Dentro del reto victoriano de la cuenta @victorianspiritsblog, he puesto esta lectura dentro de la premisa de un libro de misterio. Pero debo decir que aunque lo que es misterio si que lo hay, este ingrediente no es tan prominente como, por ejemplo, en las dos obras más famosas de Collins “La Dama de Blanco” y “La Piedra Lunar”. No obstante, a lo largo de toda esta lectura hay una atmósfera de misterio y de tensión que revolotea en la misma todo el rato. Por eso, y porque tenia que meter a Collins en alguna parte del reto, es que la novela que nos ocupa tiene este puesto. De todas formas, tampoco está tan desencaminado todo esto, ya que las novelas de Collins están inscritas en el genero de las sensational novels.

Se trata de un tipo de obras que nacieron al calor del siglo XIX, cuando los cambios económicos, industriales e ideológicos que fueron los motores de la época victoriana, favorecieron que Inglaterra se convirtiera en “un país de lectores” y que la novela se revalorizada. La alfabetización y democratización de la sociedad, y las mejoras y reducción de costes en el mundo editorial hicieron que la lectura se convirtiera en el hobbie nacional. Empezaron a surgir las llamadas novelas de folletín; publicaciones por entregas a precios módicos que se llevaban acabo en revistas o seminarios. En cada numero salía un capitulo del libro que, posteriormente, saldría publicado en su totalidad, primero en ediciones en tres volúmenes, luego en una sola y, finalmente, en un tomo barato y fácil de llevar, pensado para ser guardado en un bolsillo y así poder ser leído en el tren. Como autor, Collins fue uno de los que mejor entendió los mecanismos de las publicaciones por entregas. Siempre pendiente de las reacciones del público a sus publicaciones, para saber qué es lo que podría gustarles más en la siguiente entrega, en sus trabajos encontramos historias creíbles, argumentos llenos de fuerza y vida, diálogos ágiles y misterios secundarios que lograran enganchar al lector, provocarle la necesidad de saber qué sucedería en la siguiente entrega de la publicación. Vamos, como las series o culebrones de la actualidad. Había nacido un género nuevo, el del suspense.

“La Sotana Negra” es hija de está forma de literatura que tan influyente resulta aún hoy en día. Como he dicho antes, es una novela en la que la tensión se masca desde, prácticamente, su primera página. Los giros, las sorpresas y los descubrimientos no paran de surgir a lo largo y ancho de su trama, y todo está llevado con gran maestría y eficacia por parte de su creador. Es cierto que hay momentos y situaciones que resultan muy impostados, y elementos y personajes que a veces son demasiado melodramáticos (circunstancias que suelen darse en todas las obras de Collins). Pero esto no equivale a que resulten poco creíbles. En esto tiene mucho que ver la técnica narrativa de Collins y sus grandes capacidades literarias. Como viene siendo habitual en sus trabajos, utiliza diferentes recursos narrativos, como pueden ser la voz de un narrador omnisciente, las cartas y los testimonios de algunos de los personajes y fragmentos de diarios. Esta narrativa aporta no solo gran credibilidad y solidez al argumento, también contribuye a agilizar su lectura. Permite al lector ver las diferentes perspectivas que tienen los distintos personajes que aparecen a lo largo de las páginas de esta novela, comprobándose que no hay una única visión, es el lector quien debe tomar partido por alguna de ellas.

Esto también facilita el que se puedan caracterizar de forma realista y cercana a estos personajes. Ninguno es blanco o negro, todos están inscritos en variadas tonalidades grisáceas, pues cada uno tiene sus propias metas y motivos para actuar como lo hacen. Y esto resulta refrescante especialmente en una obra con un sesgo tan profundamente anticlerical. No podemos olvidar los prejuicios existentes en la victoriana Inglaterra protestante contra los católicos y su clero, algo que, por ejemplo se ve muy bien en los trabajos de otra de las grandes autoras de la época, Charlotte Bronte. De ahí, que frente a estos prejuicios, resulte muy refrescante ver como Collins pone la religión como una mera excusa para presentarnos una historia que trata sobre temas universales como la ambición, el poder de la persuasión y las debilidades humanas, la forma en que nuestros pecados y nuestros errores acaban por marcar nuestro destino. Para él es más importante crear una trama sólida y bien hilvanada protagonizada por unos caracteres bien construidos, y que la critica social (que en este caso tampoco falta) no haga perder de vista lo meramente literario.

En este apartado hay que destacar al personaje del padre Benwell, gran antagonista de la historia. Se trata de un hombre lleno de contrastes. Es el malo oficial de la historia, sí, pero al mismo tiempo en el cierta bondad, que queda matizado cuando se nos muestra, con tanta eficacia y claridad, sus procesos mentales y la forma en que cree en que lo que hace es lo correcto. Todo ello sazonado con cierta dosis de retorcimiento, astucia y falsedad. Sin andarse mucho por las ramas, Collins crea con gran simplicidad un personaje realmente complejo, que a mí me ha recordado mucho al inolvidable y perturbador conde Fosco de su, aún hoy en día, obra más conocida, “La Dama de Blanco”.

Él es uno de los vértices de uno de los triángulos más sorprendentes e innovadores que he leído nunca. El amor y la pasión no lo es todo en la relación que se establece entre el cura y los componentes de la pareja protagonista, Romayne y Stella. Hay en este triángulo un componente más potente y drámatico, cimentado en las ambiciones monetarias y concentrado en la lucha por el alma y el destino de Romayne, el premio por el que lucharan enconadamente Benwell y Stella. Y lo harán de una forma en la que todo estará permitido. Esto da a la historia una perspectiva muy interesante, y le otorga gran originalidad. Es una novela en la que se juega con las convicciones y con las perspectivas del lector.En esto también contribuye otro elemento: el auténtico héroe de la historia, tal y como podemos pensar que es este prototipo, tarda en hacer su aparición. Frente al personaje de Winterfield, el gran pecado de Romayne es su falta de fuerza y su carácter voluble, el cual se convierte en uno de los motores de la novela. Romayne, al final, es un personaje demasiado flemático que apenas controla lo que pasa en su vida y a su alrededor, siendo por los intereses y las intrigas del resto de personajes que le rodean los que le mueven sin que se de cuenta. De aquí que, al fin del cabo no sea el auténtico héroe de su propia historia, por más que si sea el protagonista de la novela. En ese sentido, es un protagonista muy de Wilkie Collins.

A todo esto, yo no quiero olvidarme de señalar que una de las cosas que ha hecho tan especial esta lectura ha sido que haya tenido la oportunidad de poder hacerla con la edición de una de mis editoriales favoritas, Cátedra. Es una edición muy cuidada, con una traducción estupenda. El texto está plagado de notas a pie de página llenas de detalles y curiosidades sobre la historia, su contexto histórico y la vida del autor que son muy interesantes y aportan mucho a la lectura. Antes de la novela hay un prólogo que, una vez más, me ha resultado muy esclarecedor. En esta ocasión, especialmente, ya que, aunque a grandes rasgos, conocía la biografía de Wilkie Collins, hay muchas cosas de las que he leído en este prologo que no conocía, y que me han ayudado a tener una mejor perspectiva de uno de mis autores favoritos y a saber más sobre él y el oficio de escritor en su época. En serio os digo que si por mí fuera, me leería todos los libros de literatura clásica sacados por este sello editorial, ya que creo que merece la pena solo por lo que aportan a la lectura.

Para terminar, reconozco que no estoy muy segura de si “La Sotana Negra” es o no una de las mejores obras que ha salido de la pluma de Wilkie Collins. Pero tengo muy claro (desde el mismo momento en que lo cerré) que este libro está destinado a convertirse en uno de mis favoritos de este autor, junto a “Sin Nombre” y “La Dama de Blanco”. Es una novela en la que los tiempos están muy bien llevados, en la cual no paran de pasar cosas y cuya lectura se disfruta totalmente de principio a fin. Una gran muestra del estupendo escritor que era y Collins (en serio, si podéis leer el prólogo de la edición de Cátedra. Ahí se menciona como se esforzaba el hombre en su oficio y lo bien que lo manejaba).Nunca dejará de alegrarme que poco a poco se vaya dándole relevancia dentro del panorama de los escritores victorianas. Desde luego que, para mí, es uno de los narradores más destacables de este periodo , y que se le de la relevancia que se merece me pone muy contenta y me parece justo. Aunque solo sea por lo que el disfrute que supone leer alguno de sus trabajos.

Wilkie Collins’s The Black Robe (1881) is a relatively obscure work, and I wouldn’t want to make a case for it as an unknown masterpiece. Like all Collins’s work, though, it is not without interest. I liked it for its fusion of realist late-Victorian fiction with a hint of Gothic (a ruined abbey, a haunting voice, blood guilt, madness, scheming priests). In some senses, it’s rather modern and proto-Freudian, in that it plays with Gothic/supernatural motifs, while handing readers all the clues they would need to interpret them in a psychological sense.

Another feature I liked—which is almost consistent in Collins’s novels—was the exploration of a subject most Victorian novelists would consider taboo. Disability (The Law and the Lady, The Dead Secret); race (Armadale, The Moonstone); illegitimacy (No Name)—there are few terrains where Collins feared to tread. The Black Robe explores very sensitively a passionate friendship between two men, Lewis Romayne and Arthur Penrose, which in some ways transcends in its intensity the principal heterosexual relationship portrayed in the work (I’m being oblique here to avoid spoilers). Collins signals the theme pretty clearly (Penrose is a Jesuit priest, and there’s a chapter entitled “The Priest or the Woman?”), but the treatment is also delicate, recognising that there can be all kinds of psychological and emotional fascinations that it would be reductive to boil down purely to sex.

A second pleasure of the book is that it has an excellent villain: “Father Benwell,” Penrose’s handler—a supersuave Jesuit wrangler who reminded me a little of the sublime Count Fosco of The Woman in White. Benwell is less extravagantly characterized, but he shares Fosco’s antic Machiavellianism and dry wit. Scheming to reclaim Romayne’s ancestral home, owned by the Church prior to the dissolution of the monasteries, he remarks “pleasantly” to Penrose, “Compose yourself, Arthur … We don’t mean to allow Henry the Eighth to have it all his own way forever.”

The Black Robe tends to be described as “anti-Catholic” in the (very little) critical analysis that it has received. I think that’s a simplification. The pure-hearted Penrose is represented very sympathetically, and Catholicism clearly allows him a proper outlet for his energies and idealism. Benwell is, like Fosco, the villain you’re secretly cheering for, and Romayne’s spiritual leanings are sympathetically addressed. As ever, I find it very difficult to see Collins’s novels as passively “reflecting” commonly held social or cultural attitudes. If they dramatise cultural attitudes, it is inevitably to question them. There is always something questing about his works.

Non possiamo certo dire che Collins manchi di fantasia leggendo il suo La veste nera, romanzo forse fin troppo intrigato, che parte un po’ lento ma che prende decisamente ritmo verso la fine, con un epilogo davvero avvincente. Utilizzando una struttura narrativa complessa, com’è nel suo stile, in parte epistolare, in parte diaristica, con una molteplicità di narratori, costruisce una storia dai risvolti psicologici che tocca diversi temi: la critica alla Chiesa Cattolica Romana in primis.
I personaggi non sono di quelli indimenticabili, Lewis Romayne per esempio, è a dir poco irritante, però non sarebbe Collins se non trascinasse il lettore, suo malgrado, in un vortice di cospirazioni, sotterfugi, colpi di scena, accadimenti melodrammatici che convergono tutti in un finale col botto...

Storia di intrighi più che di spionaggio, La veste nera, segue l'ormai collaudato metodo Collinsiano di servirsi di più voci e più metodi narrativi. Ci sono le solite confessioni, le solite corrispondenze interminabili, i soliti diari e le solite testimonianze.
Una storia questa volta davvero avvincente anche se, per assurdo, proprio l'epilogo che doveva essere la parte più incalzante si è rivelato di una lentezza esasperante, ma per le restanti pagine ho trovato il tutto ben costruito e narrato in maniera egregia, come sempre.
Se il metodo narrativo è quasi sempre una firma dell'autore lo sono anche le tematiche.
Anche qui abbiamo il solito personaggio che rischia di essere raggirato e vive ignaro dell'intrigo che lo circonda. La novità in questo volume è data dalla presenza della chiesa cattolica rappresentata da due preti senza scrupoli che tentano di convertire Lewis Romayne al solo scopo di rientrare in possesso di una proprietà usurpata alla chiesa ai tempi di Enrico VIII.
Romayne è purtroppo la vittima ideale, un giovane ricco e debole di carattere che in seguito ad un duello subisce un crollo psicologico e, come solo una donnicciola vittoriana potrebbe fare, cede ai raggiri dei papisti e spinge la sua esistenza ai limiti estremi ignorandone le conseguenze. Da una parte la chiesa e dall'altra non poteva mancare una donna in cerca di marito con qualche scheletro nell'armadio.
La trama è, al solito, troppo complessa da spiegare, costruita ad arte per giungere ad un finale sorprendente.
Questa volta però ho notato che alcuni personaggi sono stati dimenticati lungo il tragitto, le loro azioni sono rimaste inspiegate così come i loro ruoli nella storia. Uno fra tutti è il ragazzo francese, il furto delle lettere, il contatto da "brividi" fra lui e Stella, il tutto viene liquidato in poche righe, le giuste motivazioni dimenticate. Stessa cosa per i coniugi Loring, li si sospetta di qualcosa ma poi vengono abbandonati al loro destino senza giudizio.

I really liked The Black Robe, but think it's something readers will either like or loathe. It started off a tad slowly before gaining steady momentum, but I "had" to finish the last hundred pages in one sitting and at times it was difficult to put down. I found the well-written, informative novel more interesting because of its social commentary. I’ve come to really like Collins' writing, his novels are so far three for three, and I have a few others in the queue.

Father Benwell divides a couple and conquers the impressionable husband so that the Church may reclaim land Lewis Romayne had inherited. Being the intellectual writer that he was, Collins adds depth to the straightforward plot through psychology, deceit, power struggles, and relationships.

The Black Robe is full of Victorian England’s religious views and biases and Collins’ usual commentary about domestic issues and the plight of women. Through the portrayal of the Church’s spiritual aristocracy, its priests, and characters’ comments, England’s anti-Catholicism sentiments are crystal clear. But on the other side, Protestants have "all the prejudices incident to that way of thinking".

"The Catholic system here showed to perfection its masterly knowledge of the weakness of human nature, and its inexhaustible dexterity in adapting the means to the end."

Written in 1881, the epistolary novel differs from Collins’s earlier acclaimed classics, the Woman in White and the Moonstone. If expecting suspenseful mystery, one will be disappointed. If one likes older literary fiction, then try the Black Robe on for size.

Previous to the Black Robe the only other Collins novel that I had read was The Moonstone. I really enjoyed the Moonstone, but I don’t think these two works are even comparable. I was shocked at how much more serious in tone, purpose, and prose the Black Robe was. Others more familiar with Collins may not have been so surprised.

The Black Robe is a masterpiece if you ask me. More here than in the Moonstone do you see Collins’ true insight to the workings of the human mind. The characters of this work, including the women, are so complex, and he describes their movement physically and emotionally with such vividness, that they feel quite tangible. You feel very connected to their problems, you want to help them strive against forces working against their happiness.

Each word of prose seems precisely chosen. It very deliberately drives the story along. I wanted to share the following quote because I thought it was excellent, and a very good example of the quality of writing in this work:

“ART has its trials as well as its triumphs. It is powerless to assert itself against the sordid interests of everyday life. The greatest book ever written, the finest picture ever painted, appeals in vain to minds preoccupied by selfish and secret cares.”

I look forward to reading the White Woman, for which Collin’s in most notably known.

"La túnica negra" está considerada como una de las obras menores de Wilkie Collins, y estoy de acuerdo, siempre que se tenga presente que una novela menor de Collins sigue siendo un libro buenísimo. Simplemente es que tiene auténticos novelones con los que este libro en concreto palidece en comparación.
Posiblemente aquí le falla bastante el ritmo, y unos protagonistas que, con excepción del maquiavélico villano, son bastante poco carismáticos, pero aún así seguimos teniendo las suficientes dosis de intrigas, maquinaciones, equívocos, duelos de intelecto y giros en la trama como para que siga siendo una novela muy entretenida y de lo más disfrutable

Romayne, un giovane uomo ricco e di bell'aspetto, si ritrova coinvolto in un episodio che sconvolgerà la sua stabilità emotiva. Di carattere fragile e sensibile sarà facilmente manovrato dal padre gesuita Benwell. Romayne si troverà combattuto fra la sua ricerca spirituale e l'amore per Stella. Il racconto inizia in modo avvincente per poi rallentare e si riprenderà nell'ultima parte. Mi è piaciuto sia lo stile di scrittura considerando che è un romanzo scritto nell'800 sia la trama che riesce a tenere sempre alta l'attenzione.

Al igual que La dama de blanco y La piedra lunar, esta obra reproduce la idéntica estructura narrativa y técnica (la del narrador múltiple). Cada parte del libro está escrita por narradores diferentes, quienes mantienen correspondencia con otros personajes (en su mayoría, secundarios) de la novela: la del excomandante Hynd (narrador de la primera parte), la del padre Benwell (a través de las misivas que remite al secretario de la Compañía de Jesús en Roma) y la de Bernard Winterfield, mediante la comunicación que mantiene con Mrs. Romayne en el Libro IV y V y por los extractos de su diario personal con el que se cierra la novela. Esta narración desde distintos puntos de vista favorece el suspense y la especulación, dos elementos indispensables para la construcción folletinesca y la evolución de los personajes, protagonistas de un mundo abocado a un cambio vertiginoso.

Romanzo parzialmente epistolare, La veste nera racconta il tentativo, da parte di Padre Branwell, di recuperare per la Chiesa Cattolica Vange Abbey, la casa avita di Lewis Romayne. Non è all'altezza de La pietra di luna (che richiama brevemente grazie ad un'apparizione di Mr. Murthwaite, un famoso esploratore), ma rimane un buon romanzo (a differenza de Il fiume della colpa, che ho trovato piuttosto fastidioso)

Lewis Romayne è il protagonista del nuovo romanzo edito Fazi intitolato "La veste nera" . Romayne è un uomo giovane, considerato di bell'aspetto e possessore di una splendida tenuta di campagna chiamata Vange Abbey; un uomo che a dispetto di tutte le caratteristiche iniziali si rivelerà fondamentalmente un debole, incapace di respingere l'ombra della veste nera di chi vuole restituire Vange Abbey alla Chiesa e ad infoltire le schiere di adepti. Interessante invece è il personaggio di Winterfield e, da buona fan di Wilkie Collins, ho apprezzato moltissimo il riferimento/citazione alla Pietra di Luna delle ultime pagine.

Regalo di Natale - non credo lo avrei mai acquistato - questo libro sembra non finire mai. Decisamente disattese le incoraggianti recensioni della quarta di copertina, la storia si dipana in mille prosopopee, scritte con garbo, ma prolisse. Invece l'epilogo finale di una 40ina di pagine è un veloce parkour, che si segue con piacere, tra le montagne russe di una trama che ondeggia verso una soluzione che si spera equa. Ovviamente nulla si dirà, qui, che possa rovinare una storia che si conclude davvero nell'ultima riga.

Lower-tier Wilkie Collins. I did enjoy the little Moonstone crossover and the ending.

Apparently a land was removed from the Church by Henry VIII. And Romayne inherited the same land and now the Church was trying through a Catholic priest to convince Romayne of converting to Catholicism so they can gain the land back.


“How the boy contrived to possess himself of the sealed packet we
shall probably never discover. Anyhow, we know that he must have
escaped from the rectory, with the papers in his possession, and
that he did certainly get back to his mother and sister in
London.

With such complete information as I now have at my disposal, the
prospect is as clear again as we can desire. The separation of
Romayne from his wife, and the alteration of his will in favor of
the Church, seem to be now merely questions of time.”

Like most of Wilkie Collins's books, The Black Robe is full of plots and counter-plots, and secrets both important or important-to-Victorians-but-nothing-really-by-21st-century-standards.

It definitely sucked me in, though I spent a large junk of it gnashing my teeth in frustration. The opening protagonist, Romayne, is one of the most irritating men in fiction, whose huge ego and self-obsession make him the perfect mark for con men. He starts the book whining about people expecting him to think about anyone but himself, and continues to think about no one but himself throughout the book. He gets duped into ever escalating trouble in the opening pages, then the rest of the book is taken with a plot by an even more clever and condescending con man, a Jesuit priest who has his eye on Romayne's estate.

Luckily, just when it got too hard to take Romayne he more or less disappears from the novel while the other. Other characters take center stage. Even better, they all of them openly agree that Romayne is a jerk and none of them can stand them. What a relief!

As plots go, it's not as fun as it might be. Stealing Romayne's estates is more a question of manipulating his personality at the right moments and the right ways. Early on I was sure there would be a treasure hunt into an abbey basement to find some old land deeds, but it was not to be.

Not really a mystery, not really a love story and quite anti-Catholic. there is a reason that people know about the Woman in White and The Moonstone, but not the Black Robe.

Ho affrontato La veste nera con alte aspettative dopo aver amato La donna in bianco, ma sono uscita con sentimenti contrastanti. La trama è classica e intrigante: un duello mortale, la follia di una voce che tormenta il protagonista al centro di un gioco di potere che coinvolge fede e segreti, conversioni religiose, una chiesa che trama nell’ombra. L’atmosfera gotica e il livello di intrigo mi hanno presa, in quei primi capitoli, eppure ciò che prometteva tensione si è spesso trasformato in lentezza. Le descrizioni si allungano, i dialoghi epistolari si dilatano e Lewis non mi ha convinto come protagonista: la sua vulnerabilità si è rivelata troppo prevedibile, e nessuno degli altri personaggi mi ha davvero catturata. Mi aspettavo di restare affascinata, coinvolta dalla psicologia dei personaggi, ma ho scoperto che il mio interesse vacillava. Il ritmo narrativo ne ha risentito, rendendo la lettura più pesante di quanto sperassi.
Collins certamente dimostra anche qui la sua capacità di costruzione dell’intreccio, ma non ho potuto godermi pienamente del romanzo. Spero che altri libri di Collins, come La pietra di luna possano farmi innamorare di nuovo.

Il giovane e danaroso Lewis Romayne durante un viaggio di piacere con un amico in Francia per una serie di tragiche casualità in un duello uccide un uomo. Il rimorso di questo orribile incidente ha per lui delle conseguenze terribili. Il giovane subisce continui attacchi alla sua salute, legati anche al sentire la voce del fratello del suo avversario che lo apostrofa come “ Assassino”. C’è solo una cosa che sembra dare requie alla sua mente e al suo spirito ormai fortemente provati: lo sguardo della giovane Stella Eyrecourt. In breve i due si sposano. Ma un’ombra nera grava sul loro destino: quella della tonaca di padre Benwell dell’ordine dei gesuiti, che trama contro la felicità del ricco gentiluomo e della sua famiglia per interessi patrimoniali. L’io narrante cambia più volte durante il racconto: dal compagno di viaggio, ad amici di famiglia, a lettere e telegrammi per finire al diario di un nuovo personaggio: Mr Winterfield. In un intrigo di matrimoni, morti, religione, successioni e amore viaggiamo fra Londra, Parigi e Roma. Dopo aver letto “La donna in bianco” non credo che questo sia uno dei migliori di Collins. E’ una storia piacevole e avvincente, come tutte le sue storie, ma manca quel quid che mi ha fatto divorare la precedente lettura.

A great story of suspense, with a compelling mix of mystery, romance, and religious intrigue.

The plot is cleverly constructed with plenty of twists. It follows Lewis Romayne, who finds himself targeted by a manipulative priest aiming to steal his inheritance. The constant battle for his fortune and his future creates a tense and engaging narrative from start to finish.

I'm perfectly willing to admit that Collins books are junk food, but this one wasn't even particularly tasty.

To begin with the entire plot centers around a Jesuit conspiracy to cause a rich nobleman to return an estate to the Catholic church that was seized by Henry the VIII. This ridiculous premise is unbacked by any explanation of why this estate is of any particular interest. This made the whole novel feel slack. Collins also sets up a race between the nobleman getting married and converting to Catholocism (the unlike route by which he is expected to give up the estate) but again there isn't much tension between the two as they don't really feel that mutually exclusive. So the lady wins the race with the aid of her friends but the nefarious Father Benwell doesn't give up but continues his scheming. Eventually he succeeds in driving a definitive albeit also ridiculous wedge between man and wife, getting the nobleman to renounce his marriage, sign over the property, and head to Rome to become a priest. At this point it turns out that the lady and her first husband really belong together but of course can't be. There is some handwringing over this until the nobleman conveniently dies but not before having his child throw the evil will in the fire foiling Father Benwell at the last moment. There's also a random daring rescue not described but used to kill time by the first husband while waiting for the nobleman to kick the bucket. This last item mentions a throw away connection with 'The Moonstone'. So much for the plot.

The characters are also quite weak. Father Benwell is a scheming Jesuit but not much of one. The whole plot to convert the nobleman doesn't have much deviousness to it. The weakness of the overall idea makes the Father seem sort of silly. He is supposedly quite important but doesn't really live up to the billing. The nobleman is perhaps the most interesting but still his primary characteristic as it's displayed to us is irritability. He is of course proud as well as racked by guilt over a duel he won. On the whole though he remains pretty mechanical, doing what Collins orders him too without much concern for real motivation.

Collins also seems afraid to give offense so he includes a sympathetic Jesuit without much function but a prominent place. He also tries at times to say things about how Father Benwell isn't really all bad. It just makes the story even more slack.

Lastly, there was some indecision about how to tell the story. Collins uses some of the standard tricks like diaries, letters, and written accounts. However most of the story is told by the usual omniscient narrator. There is no attempt to reconcile these two approaches.

Basically it's a failure on all scores.

Quali conseguenze può avere un tragico incidente su una mente riservata, non mondana e dedita allo studio? Quale influenza può avere un prete cattolico, privo di scrupoli, su questa mente già provata?
“La veste nera” è un altro capolavoro di Collins, un vero e proprio romanzo psicologico.
L’autore ha la straordinaria capacità di intrecciare i molti fili della storia, con una eleganza e una semplicità fuori dal comune.
Semplicità nel presentare gli intrecci al lettore ma, gli stessi, sono di una rara complessità.
Collins ti incolla alle pagine, i suoi personaggi sono maestri nel suscitare a chi legge le più contrastanti emozioni: rabbia, dolore, antipatia, amore, incredulità...
il protagonista che più mi ha destabilizzato è stato Mr Romayne dal farmi pena mi si è mostrato degno di disprezzo e biasimo e infine di compassione.
Ed è questa la magia dell’autore: i suoi personaggi sono umani in tutte le loro sfumature. Non c’è mai il completamente buono o il completamente cattivo (anche se forse il padre gesuita Benwell può essere definito subdolo e calcolatore senza se e senza ma).
L’inizio è quasi lento come in tutti i romanzi dell’autore, è solo verso la metà che il ritmo si fa serrato e gli avvenimenti si susseguono incalzanti; come un cappio intorno alla gola del colpevole che, poco a poco, si stringe.
Ho scoperto Collins per caso e ho intenzione di leggere tutti i suoi meravigliosi romanzi.

Ho letto questo romanzo tutto d'un fiato, come sempre mi accade con Wilkie Collins. Tuttavia gli ho assegnato solo tre stelle perché non lo considero un capolavoro come altri suoi romanzi, come "La donna in bianco" o "Armadale".
La storia segue le vicende di Lewis Romayne, il quale vive ossessionato dai rimorsi per avere ucciso un giovane nel corso di un duello, e cerca una via d'uscita dapprima nel matrimonio con Stella e successivamente nella fede cattolica. Padre Benwell, il villain della storia, si approfitta della debolezza di Romayne per convertirlo al cattolicesimo e far sì che il gentiluomo restituisca alla Chiesa di Roma la sua tenuta di campagna, un monastero espropriato ai tempi di Enrico VIII.
Tuttavia, per ottenere il proprio scopo, Benwell deve impedire a Stella di dare a Lewis un figlio che potrebbe ereditare il vecchio monastero e perciò farà di tutto per separarli, scavando nel passato di Stella alla ricerca di qualche segreto compromettente.
Interessante è la somiglianza della trama con quella di un racconto di Chesterton intitolato: "Il luttuoso signore di Marne", nel quale però la vicenda è ribaltata e anziché mettere in cattiva luce i preti cattolici ne esalta le virtù attraverso il personaggio di Padre Brown, completamente opposto rispetto al Padre Benwell di Collins.
Lo stile è semplicemente sublime.

Not quite as gripping as the other Wilkie Collins novels I have read, and there wasn't much of the humor or lightheartedness that tends to be woven through his other stories. But it still kept me involved to the very end. A scheming Jesuit priest, high in the hierarchy of the church, attempts to win back for the church a parcel of land that was taken from them many generations ago. He does this by converting the current landowner to his faith. He preys on the man's irritability and troubled emotions to wreak havoc in his marriage, and convince him he is called to the priesthood. A number of interesting characters surround this plot, and the subplots that inevitably evolve.

Update: I totally forgot I had read this book 5 years ago, except that the plot of the dishonest priest sounded like something I had read before! Still give it 3 stars. There are some redeeming romantic subplots, and a handful of characters who are admirable.

Non esiste definizione migliore di "romanzo psicologico" per parlare de "La veste nera" di Wilkie Collins. Un vero e proprio thriller, una spy story vittoriana nella quale le vite dei personaggi sono intrecciate tra loro. Il tutto ha inizio quando Lewis Romayne, durante un viaggio in Francia, resta coinvolto nell'uccisione di un uomo. L'episodio lo colpisce a tal punto che il bello e ricco proprietario di Vange Abbey inizia ad isolarsi dal mondo e a sentire strane voci. A sollevarlo arriva Stella Eyrecourt che, innamorata di lui, riporta il sorriso nella sua vita. Almeno fino a quando, a turbare ancora il povero Romayne, entra in scena il padre gesuita Benwell. Il prete vuole restituire Vange Abbey alla Chiesa cattolica e per farlo è disposto a tutto! Padre Benwell si insinua nelle vite dei due innamorati, scoprendo e rivelando segreti inconfessabili.

I could definitely tell this was written by someone who was close to Charles Dickens but not as good an author as Dickens (in my opinion) - there were so many words but not much was said. The plot was also pretty unrealistic - the story was set up as the male protagonist needing to choose between religion or a woman with the idea that whoever won the man's heart would gain his estate. But there wasn't much tension there and the book felt bland overall. Not to mention that the characters were not well-written. There was a scheming priest who wasn't that good at it even though it was his only focus; the male protagonist wasn't particularly charming or interesting, though he did have a little bit of back-and-forth between guilt and pride; the female protagonist was also pretty lacking and seemed to just be there as a foil to the priest.
Overall, not an interesting read.

Written in 1881, The Black Robe presents a tale choked with the likes of greed and corruption. It begins with an incident involving Romayne and continues with details on his aunt's death, his inheritance, his property, and eventual marriage and then Catholic conversion... During the course of this, there enters Father Benwell and Stella...
All in all its an interesting tale, we see how external influences can easily affect the human psyche...
